  1. Problem solved. Got a new cable to day and now the Aputure/GH4 combo works. Very easy setup, - connected the two, switched both on and bingo. Thanks to everyone for your comments and inputs. About the quality of the Aputere: Well, for the money it is okay. The screen has too much contrast - maybe wrong contrast is the right word - to my liking. The dark areas are too dark and the bright areas too bright. I've tried different settings for brightness and contrast, but can´t get what I would like. Also I would not trust the Aputure for colors - not terrible colors but not trustworthy. The GH4 LCD has far better balance between dark and light areas and better colors. For framing and most focus work though I guess the Aputure is okay. I have put an Anti Glare Film on top of the glossy screen, this and a DIY-modification on the sunshade made it quite useful for outdoor use. Anyways, in 4-5 months time I think I´ll get the SmallHD 501 Sidefinder, - if feedback from real world users is good.

  2. Your're correct: the Speed Booster XL is really a dedicated GH4 focal reducer. The design is very similar to the BMCC version, but I squeezed out a bit more than a millimeter of extra space to clear the GH4 shutter, and, as you surmised, optimized for the thicker filter stack. In addition, the coverage was enlarged to encompass the entire m43 image area compared to the smaller BMCC sensor. However, I tuned the performance to be really good over the reduced area Cinema-4k mode of the GH4. High optical performance at extreme apertures are what this new Speed Booster is all about. Metabones seems to be having technical difficulties getting the full press release up on their website, so I'll show the data here. As you can see from the MTF curves, even at f/0.8 the contrast and resolution are extremely high out to an image height of 8,7mm, which corresponds to the Cinema-4k mode image circle diameter of 17.4mm. Beyond that point the performance drops gradually to the corners of fullframe m4/3, but is still pretty good.

  3. I don't think you guys have heard of this sport named "Freestyle Scootering" which i participate in. I make alot of videos of myself including editing, filming and of course riding. Here are my top videos. 4. All the (ungraded) shots looked good. Just gave different feelings. Which goes with my theory that you pick cameras like you would pick film stock.

  5. @JazzBox Yes, the Aputure VS2 replicates the GH4 LCD in every way, - peaking, zebra, zoom, all the menus etc.. So you can use all the GH4 features you are used to. If you don't really need a monitor right now I suggest you wait and save the money for the 501. As I said in the previous post the Aputure is ok, - bigger of course but not as good as the GH4 LCD, - and sure it is nowhere near the 501. The VS1 display has less resolution and contrast than the VS2 - lesser viewing angle too, - and as the VS2 does not deliver too impressive picture quality personally I would think twice about the VS1.

  6. I'm always flabbergasted at the amount of cameras he buys, is it for his own use or just for reviews on this site? Must be difficult to keep up and stay focused, all these cameras/reviews/books/news reports etc. This applies to everybody - full-on camera nerdy-ness completely drains the life out of you and any creativity you have left in you. For the past 2 months I've almost completely ignored camera/gadgety nerdy stuff and focused on creativity entirely. Videos have much improved, and because of this, better opportunities have cropped up. Every filmmaker gets burnt out. I get burnt out twice a year. You just have to stay focused to keep well and not to overwhelm yourself with unnecessary clutter. Maybe Mr. Reid is decluttering, who knows. Rest is a good sign of gaining some sanity

  7. The pace Andrew kept up the past two years has always amazed me. I've been expecting him to break down for a long time. Whether he got sick, exploded or quietly walked away doesn't matter. What's important is he has stepped back and taken some time for himself. There is no end to camera testing. There is no end to forum conversations. There are no end of people looking to get something from you. When I first came upon this site I bought the Canon 50D RAW video manual. Andrew seemed to be a young film-maker who discovered how one could shoot film quality stuff on a consumer camera. He was a film-maker first, blog-host second. Then he started to get access to expensive, professional cameras (not the focus of this site). Then he got into a "thing" with Canon. Next came 4K cameras which, though they have their place, distracted him from gimbals, lighting, lenses, audio, and other parts of film-making. I hope he is returning to film-making and can find some balance between it, and what he has time to share. I think he's done enough camera tests for one life-time. I believe the success of this site, which is considerable, came at a personal cost to him.

  8. Stumbled across this. Nice video here from an URSA: Given it is done in low light it is looking good. Additionally is great seeing a video with flashing lights not suffering from the strobing you get from a rolling shutter.

  9. hahaha A friend of mine, save an owl that had fallen from its nest. It feels very comfortable with humans. It s true that Kinecolor is very classic, I wanted to keep it quite basic, if ever want to play with some colorization and see what it can give. When I have more time I would suggest another further test. I would put REC-709 LUTs and more contemporary grades. I will do something more substantial. For the moment I am trying to do the editing of my first documentary feature film it s labor intensive, especially when you don t have the budget to hire an editor and you have to do it yourself but I hope to have time to propose a new test soon.

  10. It angles away from the door. Do you have a cage for the GH4? I found a rock solid solution for keeping the micro HDMI in place. I use this cage: http://www.ebay.com/itm/FHUGEN-HONU-V2-0-VIDEO-CAGE-Kit-with-Top-Handle-HDMI-Clamp-for-GH3-GH4-A7-A7R-/231330143830?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item35dc59de56 I use this HDMI clamp on the side.http://www.ebay.com/itm/SMALLRIG-HDMI-Cable-Clamp-1521-/251981734964?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3aab482434 I simply place a small round metal cylinder (find at a hardware store) inside the clamp and push it against the micro HDMI input. Lock the Clamp. It's super secure. You can basically throw the cage around and it won't come loose. Here is a picture:
