Quick but Long Samsung NX1 Review
Endfallow Media and 2 others reacted to Mattias Burling for a topic
Didn't have much to say about it. Its a good camera with great bang for the buck so I just peppered it with footage instead. Didn't have much to say about it, its a good camera with lots of bang for the buck. So I mostly peppered it with footage.3 points -
Freestyle Scootering
Cinegain and one other reacted to BrorSvensson for a topic
I don't think you guys have heard of this sport named "Freestyle Scootering" which i participate in. I make alot of videos of myself including editing, filming and of course riding. Here are my top videos. This video is my most recent which i did for my sponsor to promote a new board If you are interested in the gear i use, its a NEX 7 with a Lens turbo II, Nikkor 85 f1.8 ai, 50 f1.4 ai and 35 f2 ai.2 points -
Nice shots and montage. Keep it up. Not sure about the music used. The riding and tricks themselves are perhaps already hard to give a bit of an epic touch, selecting a bit mellow music might dull things down a little. Different tracks might've worked better there, but perhaps you've wanted to do a different approach to skating/scootering videos by not picking your typical upbeat song. But then again, must be a reason it's typical. Matter of taste perhaps. Also, be careful with black cuts like in the first video at around 0:35 there's two of 'em, if you were actually pushing smooth transitions before. It's a bit disruptive imho.2 points

The Disappearance of Andrew Reid
iamoui and one other reacted to Oliver Daniel for a topic
I'm always flabbergasted at the amount of cameras he buys, is it for his own use or just for reviews on this site? Must be difficult to keep up and stay focused, all these cameras/reviews/books/news reports etc. This applies to everybody - full-on camera nerdy-ness completely drains the life out of you and any creativity you have left in you. For the past 2 months I've almost completely ignored camera/gadgety nerdy stuff and focused on creativity entirely. Videos have much improved, and because of this, better opportunities have cropped up. Every filmmaker gets burnt out. I get burnt out twice a year. You just have to stay focused to keep well and not to overwhelm yourself with unnecessary clutter. Maybe Mr. Reid is decluttering, who knows. Rest is a good sign of gaining some sanity2 points -
4 Camera Shootout and Blind Test
Cinegain reacted to Mattias Burling for a topic
I got a bit inspired by Ed and decided to make a test in order to answer a few questions and was hoping for some help. What I'm trying to answer is what type of images appeal to what type of people online. Therefor I'm posting this on various forums and ask my friends and such in order to get everything from fellow producers, to enthusiasts, pro shooters and all the way to people that couldn't care less about cameras. As a bonus I'm looking to see what type of people notice artifacts, what people think about different grades, lights, movement and so on. So in Part 1 I'm simply recording a selfie while I'm chewing gum (yes its boring like nothing else). If you feel like helping out I would appreciate it. To clarify, I rather know which you liked best in each scene/look than which one you liked best over all. I will post the result from the votes here in a few days or so. Thanks, Mattias1 point -
This is a inexpensive LED flare light option - super super powerful and $140 quid on amazon US - creates very nice flares and good color - I use this a lot now on a bunch of jobs. If this really works as advertised, and has a reasonable optical quality, FM will be dud. Not to mention rectilux out of business before even starting out. At least FM guys made it into the market early.1 point

Quick but Long Samsung NX1 Review
Mattias Burling reacted to ricardo_sousa11 for a topic
One of the best reviews of the NX1 around, very good footage with good lenses (apart from the kit lens that most reviews use). This camera is a Pro level camera, and should be treated as such (Like you did), and yet most reviews seem to show it as a low-tier camera which is disapointing. Eitherway, Im buying mine next week (I've been saying this for about a month -..- ), I absolutely agree with you, this camera surpasses the GH4 by a long shot, and I dont think the rolling shutter is that bad, even for hand-held (unless its really fast paced action). I am very secure about my purchase, and I know, its the best camera for the price (even against expencifier cameras).1 point -

SLR magic single focus anamorphic attachment
Julian reacted to Zak Forsman for a topic
I played with the Rangefinder at Cine Gear. Works as advertised. has a 77mm rear thread. Eddie from Vid-Atlantic was there too and it worked on his Isco Ultra-star.1 point -
Rangefinder will work on any lens, anamorphic or spherical. Looks like it's all aboard the morphic single focus bandwagon express! Price sounds good providing the optic quality is there (have doubts, yet would love to be proved wrong)...after all, all that these single focus adapters are - are variable diopters focused by a helicoid, not the Manhattan project like some would want you to believe.1 point
-
The fact that they cut corners and gave it a cheap and easy to make helicoid with a rotating front element goes a long way in advising what to expect with their selection of glass.1 point
-
Curious to see this in action... I'm also interested to see if it works on a Kowa B&H. I'm still looking for the perfect (affordable and suitable for hand-held shooting) single focus solution. This might be a step in the right direction.1 point

I agree the difference of 0.07 is not such a big deal, but imo the 'normal' EF - MFT Speed Booster is already a great product. This just makes it better. The difference is more relevant for wide lenses. Because you now get the same crop factor as any aps-c camera, you can use all lenses 'as intended'. The Sigma 18-35mm for example. With the 0,71x Speed Booster, you get a 31-60mm equivalent (4K UHD), with the 0,64x you get the 28-55mm equivalent. 28mm vs 31mm is noticeable. It's not only about subject distance, but about a certain look and perspective. On top of that, you'll get an extra 1/3 stop of light. It's not much more expensive than the 0,71x SB either. So, that's what makes me - as a GH4 owner - excited. Thanks Brian!1 point

Thanks man and btw im wearing a helmet thru the enitre both videos1 point -
It's been good. There is an exposure meter in LiveView which I had not expected. The screen is big and high-res enough to flip it out and use the camera ENG style on your shoulder. Bright enough to use on an overcast day too I think. I hope you mean the newer 35mm lens because the older DX one sucks. Also you should check to make sure that you can control video with Wifi. I think I read somewhere that you can't. The image is very nice but when you focus to infinity you really notice how soft it is (compared to a Panasonic camera or the A7S). However it will be very similar to the D750. Here's a clip I took last Monday, shot on Flat. The second half of the clip is graded to how Id visualise it if it were a film.1 point

Nice shots Matt, what made you decide to go NX1, I mean you must have looked at the GH4 also but went NX1? I've been looking at GH4?1 point -

It looks good to me, too, but macro photography hardly needs as much edge sharpness as a wide shot or something. It's probably decent software. The price is right. You don't need anyone's permission to buy what you want, but Neat Video is absurdly good for the price and you'll consistently hear people raving about it. It's also kinda slow to render and occasionally finicky, but not bad. Worst case scenario you're out $30.1 point

My loyalty to EOSHD started with his RX1 video http://www.eoshd.com/2013/10/full-frame-kaleidoscopic-video-sony-rx1/ Because it showed he had resourcefulness and a talent for creative filmmaking. As far as I know he's the only big blogger on the internet to do so. Philip Bloom is good but his test videos are usually boring B-roll type stuff. Over the last year I've noticed a decline in creativity in the videos Andrew has posted and an increase in his aggressive forum posts. It's good that he's taking some personal time1 point

I cant agree with your analysis, Ed. There weren't many landscape shots in Ex Machina but the ones that were there did advance the story. Usually with the character going to or from places. And usually creating a contrasting edge to the clean, highly technological interiors. Ex Machina is about the tipping point between being a robot and human, and how other humans would interact with them. The fact that they are sexualised humanoids works well with the story because we humans are more inclined to build a rapport with attractive members of the opposite sex. The inventor in the movie is also a needlessly buff, handsome guy but I don't see any complaints about that?1 point

Dear Ed David, Domestic Abuse (accused domestic abuse) is not on the same level as rape. Not even close. Also bringing this thread back to the top does not bring down the forum, it brings to light your horrific comments, accusations, and topics. They show that you are not here primarily as a filmmaker but as a grandstanding attention seeker, that would rather attack others for their opinions than discuss them. What do I think of the tape? That Emma is using her rape for personal, political, and financial gain. In that way I suppose she is the voice of her generation. Is rape horrific and terrible, yes it is. Should it be penalized more severely? YES. Should accused parties still be innocent until proven guilty and have the right to their livelihood not being ruined purely on a accusation? YES. Will I watch the video. NO.1 point

It's the same for me, that's what I thought. I think Brian Luce and The Chris can switch Display/EVF only in still mode and not during video recording.1 point

I have a question, what the hell are you guys all shooting that's so significant that you'll sit here and split hairs over DR, gamma, this, that, and the other thing? Are you producing a multi-million dollar blockbuster, or, rather is it something like some shots of a trash can, may be the sky and a few trees posted on Vimeo? You take one persons findings and opinion of a camera and suddenly you're all high ranking DP's of the world, trash talking this and that because it isn't 10 bit, it doesn't have enough DR, it doesn't compare to this camera or that camera. Who cares? Show me something you've done that's so significant that I should care. I'll be waiting!1 point
