  2. It would be so much easier to be a painter or a writer. You don't have to have equipment. You don't have to do all the things. You're not at the mercy of gear. You're not here and you're not there. It's a terrible pain to be a filmmaker, because you not only have the creative problems, but you have financial problems that they don't have. You have technical problems that they don't have. You have machines that are breaking down in a way that paintbrushes don't break down. It's just a terrible thing to be a filmmaker. And if you are a filmmaker, it's because there is something in the sheer medium that seems to be able to make some sort of statement that you particularly want to make, and which no other medium to you seems capable of making in the same way. Not my words, but I do like them. As much as I go on about it's only about what you do with the equipment, not what equipment you have, filmmakers are tethered to the technology. It's the blessing/curse. If you're curious about from where and whom the above sentiment comes from: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sH8FvTjESvU

  3. Someone crashed the DJI Inspire 1 on yesterdays shoot. My response wasn't "Is it broken?", it was "Did you get the shot?" Honestly, my gear gets bashed to bits, literally. My gear is secondary to my vision, and I'll brutalise the gear to accomplish the best vision possible.

  4. Your're correct: the Speed Booster XL is really a dedicated GH4 focal reducer. The design is very similar to the BMCC version, but I squeezed out a bit more than a millimeter of extra space to clear the GH4 shutter, and, as you surmised, optimized for the thicker filter stack. In addition, the coverage was enlarged to encompass the entire m43 image area compared to the smaller BMCC sensor. However, I tuned the performance to be really good over the reduced area Cinema-4k mode of the GH4. High optical performance at extreme apertures are what this new Speed Booster is all about. Metabones seems to be having technical difficulties getting the full press release up on their website, so I'll show the data here. As you can see from the MTF curves, even at f/0.8 the contrast and resolution are extremely high out to an image height of 8,7mm, which corresponds to the Cinema-4k mode image circle diameter of 17.4mm. Beyond that point the performance drops gradually to the corners of fullframe m4/3, but is still pretty good.

  5. I got a bit inspired by Ed and decided to make a test in order to answer a few questions and was hoping for some help. What I'm trying to answer is what type of images appeal to what type of people online. Therefor I'm posting this on various forums and ask my friends and such in order to get everything from fellow producers, to enthusiasts, pro shooters and all the way to people that couldn't care less about cameras. As a bonus I'm looking to see what type of people notice artifacts, what people think about different grades, lights, movement and so on. So in Part 1 I'm simply recording a selfie while I'm chewing gum (yes its boring like nothing else). If you feel like helping out I would appreciate it. To clarify, I rather know which you liked best in each scene/look than which one you liked best over all. I will post the result from the votes here in a few days or so. Thanks, Mattias

  8. That's not what I mean. I like it regardless of how it was made. I would love just the same if it was a billion dollar production by Michael Bay. What I mean is that it doesn't matter what critics say, and it doesn't matter if people like it or not. It would matter if the people who backed it on Kickstarter disliked it, but I don't think that's the case. I'm pretty sure 99,99% of the backers got what they asked for. I don't necessarily agree or disagree with Ed's statement about "bringing down the movie business" and "turning it into art". To me, Kung Fury absolutely is art. And it is a good example of what can be achieved by an individual without the movie industry as we know it. So maybe Ed has a point. But then again, I don't think it matters, because it doesn't pretend to be anything.

  9. Lens flare in these adapters is the biggest problem, especially as you go wide. I'd look for that first. There are some DIY solutions to dealing with it out there.

  10. Kung Fury does connect with me. I get the comparison people make with something like Danger 5, but that doesn't connect to me at all. Can't even stand watching the trailer. Humor is difficult and very subjected to taste, Kung Fury nails it 9/10 for me. Anyway, imo the whole discussion about this movie is pointless. The dude had an idea, wanted to make it. Went to Kickstarter, found a lot of people who wanted to see it. Those people paid for it, dude made the movie. People that wanted to see it loved it, so did million others. It's completely unpretentious. That's what I like about it.

  11. Didn't have much to say about it. Its a good camera with great bang for the buck so I just peppered it with footage instead. Didn't have much to say about it, its a good camera with lots of bang for the buck. So I mostly peppered it with footage.

  12. yes I used it on this piece I shot - all flares are fake.

  13. The only native glass I used was the 30/2.0. Most of the footage is vintage. I recommend looking for m42 and C/Y mounted lenses. They are future proof since they even work on Canon full frame. You can see the 35mm, 24mm and two 50mm that all works great on the NX1 in this.

  14. I absolutely feel you on this one. I grew up as a fruit-booter, and that is (and has always been) a bastard sport in the US. Still love it though. =]

  17. Rangefinder will work on any lens, anamorphic or spherical. Looks like it's all aboard the morphic single focus bandwagon express! Price sounds good providing the optic quality is there (have doubts, yet would love to be proved wrong)...after all, all that these single focus adapters are - are variable diopters focused by a helicoid, not the Manhattan project like some would want you to believe.

  19. Dear Ed David, Domestic Abuse (accused domestic abuse) is not on the same level as rape. Not even close. Also bringing this thread back to the top does not bring down the forum, it brings to light your horrific comments, accusations, and topics. They show that you are not here primarily as a filmmaker but as a grandstanding attention seeker, that would rather attack others for their opinions than discuss them. What do I think of the tape? That Emma is using her rape for personal, political, and financial gain. In that way I suppose she is the voice of her generation. Is rape horrific and terrible, yes it is. Should it be penalized more severely? YES. Should accused parties still be innocent until proven guilty and have the right to their livelihood not being ruined purely on a accusation? YES. Will I watch the video. NO.

  20. Personally I like different crop sensor cameras, shooting FF, S35 or even S16. The most important thing I consider in an image is dynamic range and colors, resolution not so much as long as it's 720p. Blackmagic Ursa Mini will be my next personal camera, I really don't see myself buying any new non 4k camera, 4K camera simply gives you a greta advantage when downscaling to 1080p which is something I wouldn't want to lose.

  21. 'Saying something' doesn't mean talking down to the audience to impart a message. 'Saying something' means having something new and original to share, that the creator(s) really needed to get out. Star Wars said something new. Kung Fury didn't. A lot of the defence of the film around here seems to revolve around 'you want all movies to be high art/you think every movie needs to have a big message/you're just a pretentious snob who only approves of what the critics think is great'. To that I would say that the best movie I saw in the past two weeks was Last Action Hero, a movie that's certainly not profound, but is extremely fun, and in my mind definitely 'said something'.

  24. This has to be the biggest bullshit so far this year,,, No-one will want to view material in 1080. Come on! As for Blu-Ray 4K...... I've bought Aliens on VHS, Laserdisc, DVD and Blu-Ray. I'll be damned if I'll let the greedy bastards trick me into buying it one more time.

  25. The downsides on the NX1 are related to the new codec, those "problems" will soon go away, leaving me with a superior camera on the long run.
