  1. Hey guys, I've written a really simple command line app for Mac that will resample GH4 footage from 4K 4:2:0 to 2K 4:4:4 using pixel summing. This will give you real 10 bit data in the luminance channel, so it's not just doing a brute-force bump from 8 bits to 10 bits. There actually is some interesting pixel finagling going on here: http://www.mediafire.com/download/f7h950spj5hrn9f/gh444.dmg There's no GUI, so you'll need to run it from the terminal. Do this by copying the app into the directory that contains the GH4 MOV files and using the following command in a terminal: ./gh444 INPUTFILE.MOV Make sure you cd to the current directory first if necessary. You can do this by typing "cd" into the terminal, add a space, and then drag the folder containing the MOV files into the terminal window. It will automatically add the path to the cd command. It'll look like this: cd /path/to/gh4/files The app will spit numbered DPX frames out in a folder named "dpx_out." I'd love for you guys to give it a try and see if you find it useful!

  3. Depends on what you want to do. I wouldn't recommend necessarily making a wildly dynamic food video "just because." If it fits what you want to do or are hired to do, sure... but there's something to be said in making a video that's a bit more timeless and classic too. I don't do extreme food cooking like I'm base jumping of El Capitan, so that commercial looks a bit silly to me personally.

  4. Agreed. And a bit more dynamic shots in there couldn't hurt either. Recently on another forum we discussed some food videos we liked. Maybe it's good inspiration for you: Make a cocktail with Absolut Vodka! Notice the sound effects! https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCmUQ2vJjiGtR4FLhpUqjUyQ/videos Very visual ad for friggin' sandwich spread pulled off in a great way! Great shots. Love the snappy edit.

  5. Would be cool to have something like the Atomos Ninja 2 that would do 4K. The Blackmagic Video Assist seems pretty decent, but something even more basic/smaller with less focus on monitoring, just something simple that offers sweet 4K recording at competitive prices without having to go Atomos Shogun/Convergent Design Odyssey7Q+/Video Devices PIX-E5(H) you know.

    Lenses

Nikon Ai, Ai-s, F and G lenses are all actually the same mount. Just work in different ways. G lenses don't have an aperture ring and so your adapter will have to have an aperture lever built in. I don't think the Zhyongi has it but the Camdiox and Metabones does.

    nex 7 vs a6000

I use the a5100 files (Xavc-s) directly into FCPX, on a MBPro 2014 Retina with a SSD. No issue at all. It's the first Sony camera I own, but a gigantic step ahead the Canon 7D or 550D on dynamic range and moiré

    nex 7 vs a6000

I just picked up an a5100, I bought it because of the 50mbps XAVS-C codec. I usually transcode everything to prores before bringing it into FCPX, but MPEGStreamclip doesn't handle it. Does anyone know of another program that will transcode it... EditReady?

There is less moire and now almost no edge-weirdness (not really sure how to describe it) in XAVCS vs the old codec. Moire is still present though, the usual suspects like distant brickwork. I would say, less moire now than the 5N, but more than the Panny G6. The XAVCS is a whole lot nicer overall though. It doesn't break up when you have lots of detailed movement (trees blowing etc).

    gx7...still good?

Like I said, I got mine in the mail the other day and I have filmed about 5 minutes of tests with it and so far I am really happy with it. My other camera is an eos-m, and I have duplicates of a Minolta MD 50mm f2, nice underrated lens btw, and I think I may do a side by side test between the two. I was always happy with the eos-m but now I am curious to see how the a5100 stacks up.

  12. Not very realistic to expect a major firmware update every month. At least they are solving some bugs quickly.

  14. It won't be the usual full review I'm afraid. Limited resources means I returned the camera, can't justify keeping it. I found it boring as a GH4 owner. It doesn't need a fancy review. It just needs a few lines of explanation really... The battery is smaller, and 4K video eats it up quite quickly which is a shame because the GH4's strong point was run time for 4K on a single battery. Good points - image almost same as GH4, as near as makes no difference and the price is excellent. No LOG mode is coming though and there's no 10bit HDMI output so the decision is pretty simple, if you need to save money and don't care about long battery life, LOG or HDMI get the G7.

  15. Some 1:1 bits of 1080p clips made from a GH4 4K. test clip dowscaled to 1080p on export. The original clip comes from the other thread, and was heavily banded on purpose. We can safely say working at 4K but exporting at 1080 is good! Transcoding to 1080p at the start is just shooting yourself in the balls, but less sensible.
