ARRI Alexa 65 in new trailer!
TheRenaissanceMan and 2 others reacted to Sekhar for a topic
I think Jonesy was being tongue in cheek about the DOF because it's actually quite large in almost all the shots. And yes, the visuals are great, but how exactly is that because of Alexa 65 and its super large sensor? I don't honestly see how you can tell the difference from a YouTube clip. There are a lot of other amazing things going on in the trailer.3 points -
That GX7 EVF hump and rectangular corner just looks so ugly in my opinion... I prefer the symmetry and sleek aethetic to the GX7. All I wanted was just a 4K update on the GX7, and maybe a 3.5mm jack and a tiltable uppy screen and maybe weatherproofing. This total re-design and 2.5 times price tag is bizarre!2 points

Wth. It's terrible in 2015 that they still have issues with heat. Hmmm ... Ebrahim Saadawi writes some of the best posts in these forums. And no arrogance or rude behavior. It's always a pleasure to read his posts.2 points

Richard's photos are pretty nice. In general, the lowlight performance for stills looks pretty good. I still hope Panny improves the final video specs. Likelihood is low, yes. But I, and I'm sure many people would jump on this camera if they gave it higher bitrates and 1080p slow mo. It seems like most people would buy the Sony RX10ii or Samsung NX1 instead considering the price/performance ratio. Only benefits I see with this right now over the other 2 are Tilting EVF, Fully articulating screen.1 point

I'm not sure anyone can give you the perfect advice for you. I own the LX100, but not the GX7 (though I have a GH3). Since getting the LX100, I find that the GH3 is left home a lot more, whether I want to shoot video or take pictures. There are obviously limitations in zoom range, but I find it sufficient most of the time, especially since if you only plan on outputting 1080p, by recording in 4K, you can crop in and get more zoom that way. The LX100 is the best camera purchase I ever made (but that's me and my preference in terms of quality, usability and portability) just my 2 cents.1 point

Jail time for drone violations
Cinegain reacted to Xavier Plagaro Mussard for a topic
Drones are like any other tool, useful when used right, dangerous when used bad. Of course there must be laws and rules to keep the use on the good side and punish people who use them bad. It's so basic that it feels ridiculous to have to write it. When I first searched a drone pilot four years ago, here in Italy, there was already a regulation in UK. Here in Italy they are still changing the rules everyday.......1 point -
Love this detailed explanation. These do a real service for all of us, so thanks. I had the angle of view concept, but have always been a bit confused about how to multiply to find the DOF equivalent, so that's very helpful. It makes you realize that a big part of the equation is how well these cameras perform wide open or in that vicinity, since most lenses generally have a sharpness sweet spot in the middle of their range, but to get an decently shallow DOF on these 1" sensors you need to be shooting pretty open, so need a good performance from the lens wide open. This all exacerbates my main complaint about the weak ND the RX100 IV comes with. I'd love to shoot these pretty well open, but .3 ND does not allow for that at all in bright daylight. You can maybe get away with F/11. It's a shame they didn't make it .6 or .9 or even 1.2. Very confused about the choice by Sony the first go round, but that they kept it for the RX100 IV is baffling. Am I crazy here? What is the point of that weak ass ND?1 point

Jail time for drone violations
agolex reacted to fuzzynormal for a topic
Well, all I'm saying is regulation exists or not because of political clout. Lots of things influence that clout. Money, words, symbols, media metaphors, whatever. FWIW, I personally don't mind if drones get regulated. Let's also consider this: someone's going to die today because alcohol is a legal drug. Another person is going to die today because of a legally permissive gun culture. I'm not saying the way American govermnment works is right or wrong, just how I think it is. If you believe that you can organize a group of drone operators to influence, positively, future legislation then go for it. That is how it's supposed to work, but I'm certainly more cynical and believe that would, realistically, be a lost cause for the reason stated above.1 point -
gx7...still good?
Volker Schmidt reacted to Kangaroo for a topic
I know that the camera is just a tool but that doesn't mean that is not important, I just want to buy something that suits my needs, I'll be fine also with an old 550d but now that I can decide what to buy I want to take the right decision because I can't afford to change gear every week1 point -
Ebrahim, you clearly like the camera. I can't argue with your opinion that the difference in quality shows even on this YouTube clip, because it's an opinion. But I don't think you supported it with anything factual other than saying that the large sensor makes it possible to shoot wide shoots with less distortion. I don't believe that's accurate. As I understand, differences in distortion come from lens design. With the same design, whether you use a small frame with a wide lens or a large frame with longer lens, as long as you get the same field of view you're going to have the same level of distortion. So, frame size plays no part other than letting you go wider with the same lens. I may be wrong though, please point to a credible source if I am.1 point

http://www.dvinfo.net/article/production/camgear/what-alexa-and-watercolors-have-in-common.html http://www.dvinfo.net/article/acquisition/sonyxdcam/sony_sgamut_vs_sgamut3.html#prettyPhoto Worth reading. Color negative film (not slides, which is why serious landscape photographers use Velvia or digital to get "insane" colors) grows less saturated as exposure increases, very unlike video. This is why tricks with the lum vs sat curve (in Resolve or Color) can give you a killer "film look" unless highlights blow out under mixed light. SLOG2 is awful. It can't handle mixed lighting, it doesn't clamp saturation, and the color rendering is... weird. But sony cameras don't HAVE to look bad. Let's look at the F55: SLOG3: SLOG3 with Alexa/Dragon style highlight roll-off (color desaturates as brightness increases): Shocking that Sony hasn't made the latter the default. So caught up in tech but so hopelessly out of touch with aesthetics. Fwiw, the C300 Mk II will get this right. Canon has slowly been improving Canon Log and WideDR modes and their color is already dramatically better than SLOG2, not as good as Arri... yet. Word is Canon Log 2 will be on par with Arri. Red started awful but is getting really good, too. But if you have an F5, do yourself a favor and download this: http://community.sony.com/t5/F5-F55/Release-version-3DLUT-s-for-S-Gamut3-Cine-S-Log3/td-p/287847 A7S owners: Can something like this be done with the A7S? A "look" file that clamps saturation at 30IRE. If so I would be much less interested in an A7S2, which NEEDS to be able to do this or it will still have weird color. Internal 4k and 240fps at 1080p would be great, of course. I feel like I'm the only person here whose clients don't request 4k delivery but for me it's not that important, it's just that the internal 1080p in the A7S is really poor relative to the GH4/C300/etc. and 4k gives you room for scaling/stabilization for drone shots.1 point

GX8 Images and specs
IronFilm reacted to Andrew Reid for a topic
But it doesn't beat a £470 Sony A6000 for stills and therein lies the problem, if it's clearly aimed at photographers. Anyway the £599 Samsung NX500 arguably performs better in 4K mode than the GX8. 2.2x crop on the Samsung, looks like a 2.5x crop on the GX8 from a noisier sensor with suspect colour.1 point -
GX8 Images and specs
IronFilm reacted to Marcio Kabke Pinheiro for a topic
But Olympus must break on of their "barriers": supply good video. They had the time to do it with the E-M5 II and failed VERY badly. And since both Oly (cumbersome menus, subpar video, same idiossincrasies generation after generation - like underexpose in TTL flash) and Panasonic looks like have some points that they never address, I'm not much positive about a future IBIS in GH5. Two years after the GX7, and they can't produce a working IBIS for video. More worried about the new sensor - Sony could be taken both Pany and Oly hostages by sensors. This unit is not BSI, no improvements in high ISO (same perfeormance as the 16mp sensor, which is a relative gain, but relative to the resolution, not in the final image), and no fast readout enough to eliminate crops in 4k; if this will be the base sensor for the GH5 and E-M1 mkII, then Sony left both almost one and a half generation behind. The incredible 1" sensors from the RX100 IV and the RX10 II have a 6 month exclusivity clause for Sony - they probably will sell them in boatloads in this period. For bigger sensors, could be even worse - BSI could remain an exclusivity to Sony, if the GX8 sensor is an example. And Sony will have a generation gap to control. My suggestion: Olympus, Panasonic and probably Fuji (and maybe even Nikon and Canon) must have urgent talks with Samsung about sensor supplying. The NX1 sensor is BSI and very good as we know; a Samsung m4/3 BSI sensor, with higher sensitivity and very fast readout (remember: the NX1 have an APS-C 28mp sensor in full readout at 240fps) would be killer, and stops the hold that Sony could put on the sensor market.1 point -
