The Canon fight back begins - with a box
QMedia and 6 others reacted to Andrew Reid for a topic
The real irony seems to be a bit lost on you. But let's address your made up irony first... I have not "sacrificed" raw, 10bit, 422, colour science and other aspects merely for resolution. I still treat the image as a visual whole and not a mere number. I have shot with the Digital Bolex - lovely raw and tip top colour... I have shot with Blackmagic for 10bit ProRes and of course 5D Mark III raw, and could go back to any one of them any time I please... in fact it would make my life a lot easier not having to cover all these cutting edge new cameras that just so happen to be 4K, for ungrateful bastards like you.... But I don't and that is because the current 4K cameras look lovely. 14bit Raw or 10bit 422 and the best colour science is a spec like any other... and it is rather overrated itself. For example the highlight roll off is smoother in 8bit SLOG on the A7S compared to 14bit raw on the 5D3 - go and figure. Indeed I prefer the 8bit 422 LOG image from the 1D C to Blackmagic's 12bit raw for colour. Again, go figure... Hands down my favourite image at the moment is the Canon 1D C so I am not a brainless 'Canon basher'. Those you will have followed EOSHD for a while or those in the know will get the satire... others won't... If you don't get it, then hopefully it will tweak your interest in the current state of play enough to research into the subject a bit more.7 points -

Canon is repackaging a selection of their DSLRs to appeal more to video producers. Writ large with the phrases "FULL HD" and "SELFIE" the bundles come with one of Rode's cheapest mics and a 32GB SD card. The standard kit zoom (18-55mm) is provided as normal. Prices are anything but low end though with the bundles ranging from a hefty $899 for the T5i to a GH4/NX1 busting $1649 for the 70D. Read the full article4 points -
NX1 won't manual focus - arghhhh...
sandro and 2 others reacted to Andrew Reid for a topic
Yes very annoying. And very stupid. The solution is not to use Samsung's lenses until they fix it. There's no excuse for having to enter the focus menu to enable MF every time you want to shoot a take... and at the worst possible moment as well - i.e. seconds before the take starts. Worse still, in order to have the magnified focus assist work, you have to be outside of movie standby mode. So you can't just stay in standby mode with MF enabled if you want to check focus that way. The auto-focus is very poor... hunts around and does not do what you want it to do.3 points -

I have just received my SLR Magic Rangefinder which is a groundbreaking concept. It transfers focus away from the main lens focus ring onto a dedicated buttery smooth geared 240 degree cinema lens focus ring and attached to the main lens like a screw on filter. With the main lens set to infinity, focus is done purely through the SLR Magic Rangefinder. This means that the awkward to focus Kowa 2x anamorphic lenses are now as usable as an Iscorama. It means Nikon glass can finally focus the 'right' way! It also gives closer focussing abilities for lenses that have a long minimum focus distance (like the 2m of an Iscorama anamorphic) and prevents the focus breathing inherit in all non-cinema photographic lenses. I wonder how many people suffer from Obsessive Compulsive Canon Dissaproval Disorder (OCCDD)? Symptoms include: not getting over the fact Canon DSLR video is a bag of crap and being unable to get over it. Medication includes: Using a Sony mirrorless that isn't as good at color than Canon but has more fabulous features, or becoming bankrupt after purchasing a C line camera and wishing you got an FS7 with lenses instead.2 points -
Umm Yeah...Taken them long enough, better late than never tho...or is it too little too late maybe. One thing tho Jordan from the Cam store says he now mainly uses it as his B Cam to his Sony FS7 He prefers it over the A7S now (his older B cam), judging by some of his posts he seems to really love it. So it may hold up against the A7R 11...maybe, obviously the A7R will kill it in a lot of areas, but maybe ease of use, price, gradability etc..will give it some air.2 points

Well obviously they aren't- because they have been through that stage at the beginning of their careers and have access to cameras like ARRI's, RED, etc. But many future Hollywood cinematographers are comparing specs between the GH4 and A7s. That demographic of "people who think it would be cool to shoot some video" are getting pretty badly ripped off. This package wouldn't be so bash-worthy if it was priced, say, 30 to 40% lower. Some here are saying "let Canon charge and market their products themselves however they want". Sure, they will- let us also laugh and bash their marketing however we want, too! What would be far better is if they would buy this exact kit but separately- as already mentioned by Andrew. That way they could save a few hundred dollars for lighting, no? This is the only thing that I agree with you on. I am trying recently to shoot more and read/ post less. Same goes for music recording. It is plain old laziness combined with actually being busy with other work. But fair point as I believe if people spent half of their forum time shooting and editing there would be a lot more interesting content out there indeed...2 points -

Oh please. Canon deserve to be bashed for their laziness towards the pro-sumer/ indie pro video demographic. Get over it. Even if I could afford a C300 Mark II, I don't think I would buy it. Out of principle, the price/ performance ratio does not even come close to what I think is acceptable in 2015, especially without HFR. And that's not just me. It's a lot of other people too.2 points -

Oh lighten up. Canon deserve all the bashing in the world for selling such a POS package for that much money. As for the consumers... you can forgive some teenagers tugging at their dad's sleeve to buy this package based on the marketing. As for anybody else who isn't put off by the cheesy-ass box... 5 minutes of research on a smartphone will tell them to save their money and get a camera three times as good, a mic twice as good and still have money left over for a decent 64GB SD card...2 points -
There isn't any AF switch on this lens. How do you stay in standby mode? Since the op, I had a chat with Samsung. They said this: "Okay. As per the information I see that the camera while recording the videos will switch to autofocus to manual and vice-versa depends upon the brightness and lighting around the camera to make sure that it records with quality." Then later: "The focus mode switches between manual and auto depends upon the lightning on the captured objects. This is the integrated feature to make sure with the quality of the video recording are upto the mark. In the manual focus mode it’s nearly impossible for the camera to focus on a moving subject if any other objects are in the frame. hence it switches between the modes." Then they made it clear this is a fw issue and cannot be changed through any settings. Why on earth would anybody make a camera that is forceably taken from MF regardless of the shooter's intentions? Maybe I'll need to buy a MF lens....2 points

There is a good dose of irony here. EOSHD is happy to sacrifice things like raw, 10 bit, 4:2:2, colour science and various other aspects that make an image, just to be able to shoot 4k (no doubt in big letters on the box). Marketing works!2 points

Hi all. First post over here. Having a really aggravating problem with my Samsung NX1 and 16mm Samsung NX 2.4 lens. Everything is on manual focus. But whenever I press video record, it reverts to continuous auto focus no matter what I do. While it is recording I can switch back to manual focus, but at that point I've already lost my manual focus point. Just want to record manual - arghhhhh!!! Anybody have any advice? I've been through the entire manual and have the latest fw - 1.32. Thanks, Tom1 point

Been shooting again and I have to say: the RX10M2 handles motion much better than the NX1, it just doesn't look as fragile and rolling-shutterish. This must be the integrated DRAM (possibly the stabilization, too). Really impressed. You can just film a bird on-the-fly (haha) on 200 mm and it never looks crappy. I'm probably keeping the Sony, even though it's possibly going to be 1-300 Euros less in a few months. If they manage to build larger sensors with that architecture, we're probably in for an even bigger treat than the A7RM2.1 point

Drones = boring. That video looks like a bunch of stock footage. There's no connection to the subject when you're zooming around hundreds of feet in the air. There's no detail, anything more than a couple of shots and its monotonous. I'm a big fan of closeups, I like detail. I watch lots of travel videos because I'm planning an extended trip and will be shooting all the countries I visit. Good videos are always a mix of people, scenery, food, landmarks, culture and those things you won't see anywhere else - whatever makes destination X unique. Sound is so important, it really adds texture, sets the mood and pulls the viewer in - nat sound gives travel videos so much life. You get no sound from a drone outside of buzzzzzzz. I find videos from exotic locations with no sound to be very disappointing. Just my opinion.1 point

This deserves an article. I've been staying at my parents for the summer and they have german television over satellite. I haven't watched TV for years and I was shocked by the fact that every documental is now a shallow dof hell shot wih the 24 1.4 full open all the time. Also watching the "tatort" after many years and it looks awful. Not because of DOF but because the new generation of camera operators and editors don't seem to know what they are doing. You will say, german television, but if you see older stuff shot on film it's much more professional.1 point

Why Canon is Still Top Dog
Amro Othman reacted to jax_rox for a topic
I know the C300 found its market, but it's not quite correct to state that most cinematographers use the C300... I often wonder if Canon and Arri (and RED to some extent - at least in creating hype) are the only companies who really know how to market a camera. Sony tried their darndest with the F5/55 and it ended up with little short films that had clipped highlights, an average grade and squashed dynamic range - not at all reflective of how either camera actually handles. Panasonic's Varicam reel was nice looking, but I haven't seen or heard anything since. The latest demo shoots from Sony (for FS7, A7rII etc) are average, and do little to really show off the cameras abilities. Even the official A7s demo footage I saw was so-so. Why weren't Sony the first ones to go 'let's shoot a short film at 2am using moonlight as our only light source to show this camera off'? Why not send out some pre-production models to some big productions and see how they put them to use? Sure, the Canon 5DmkII revolution kinda grew organically, but times have changed!1 point -

Canon EOS 1d C Sample .mov footage?
Liam reacted to Andrew Reid for a topic
C'mon dude...12 out of your 13 points refer to stills!! Let's narrow it down to video, because it is obvious which is the better stills camera if you want build quality and AF! 1D C is Canon's stills flagship 1D X in all but the badge. So video... A7S has better internal full frame 1080p resolution, as it isn't binned, comes from a full sensor readout. The APS-C modes (Super 35mm) on both the 1D C and A7S are quite equally matched for resolution BUT I much prefer the colour out of the 1D C in rec.709 and in Canon LOG it is far easier to grade than A7S in Sony LOG. You say battery life is an advantage of the 1D C.... Only for stills. In 4K video mode it chews through batteries like a hungry dog in a sausage factory. And these are massive batteries, 5x larger in physical size than the ones the A7S takes!! It is not an economical cool running camera at all for video. The native EF mount does have its advantages for Canon users. But the metabones errors are mostly fixed now and the A7RII will even sort AF out. I don't class the A7S's size as an advantage for video... prefer the weight of the 1D C... it is tiny compared to an FS7 or C300 and lighter, but it is not too light like the A7S, so you can use it handheld without as much jitter and it just feels more stable in general. Shame no articulated screen though. The ergonomics are very basic for video... but also, I like the simplicity. Stick a loupe on it. Hit record. Very fast and direct access to ISO, shutter, aperture, IS on/off switch, etc. FS7 is much more complex and slower. For low light shooting, the video output of the 1D C in 4K mode is actually slightly better than the A7S in 4K over HDMI. But the A7S's internal 1080p is a bit better once you get past ISO 12.800. It can hold on for a couple of stops longer before falling apart. How much you will need those crazy high ISOs in every day situations though, there is some question. Where the 1D C mainly excels over the A7S for video is purely that organic image. It is less electronic looking, better colour, internal 422 and of course the lovely resolution of 4K without the need to bolt a bulky recorder on. That was my main reason for buying it for video. Other reasons were stills-camera related (I wanted to sell my 5D3 but needed to keep a full frame Canon body for stills & AF). Where the A7S excels over the 1D C for video... quite a few areas really, but not the BIG one of the internal image quality. 4k 422 Canon LOG at 500Mbit/s thrashes 1080p 420 SLOG at 50Mbit/s. But if 1080p is your bag and you can expertly grade, the A7S image can be lovely. The A7S has the advantage of more video suited ergonomics - built in EVF, articulated screen, focus zoom while recording, focus peaking, etc. It has advantage of price. It has advantages of mirrorless lens mount, it's more adaptable. Works with PL lenses with simple adapter. Works with Leica M stuff. We are talking really high end lenses here that 1D C isn't privy to at all. Also the media is cheaper and it needs less of it. Files much more efficiently compressed. It doesn't really have a dynamic range advantage for video though despite the sensor specs showing a 2 stop advantage at DXOMark for raw stills and without SLOG the rec.709 colour is horrible looking compared to the 1D C's 4K shot on Standard or Faithful for example... Canon's colour science for both LOG and Rec.709 is hands-down superior looking, but I have no idea WHY! Don't forget the A7S has that creatively interesting 120fps in 720p so that is another notch for the A7S. Will be VERY interesting to see how the A7R II internal 4K compares to 1D C. It isn't likely to beat it. It is likely to get close. But now with the used price of the 1D C and price of a new A7R II kinda meeting in the middle, Sony can't exactly claim the price advantage any more like they could with an $2000 A7S vs $12,000 1D C. Going to be an interesting few months.1 point -
Yeah I know it's pretty annoying and I hate it. It should definitely be addressed via FW upgrade.1 point

Why Canon is Still Top Dog
sanveer reacted to Amro Othman for a topic
The main reason Canon is still popular is because: - Riding on their strong name and reputation. - EF lens system is very popular and widespread. - Colour science makes photos and videos look good straight out of camera, like skin tones etc. Apart from that, for the money, their camera tech is old and boring as f***1 point -

Eh - I mean, who really cares? There are people who own RED cameras who have no clue how to expose an image, let alone light an interesting scene. There are people who started shooting on Super 8mm, or Hi-8 video who are now making quite good movies (even Hollywood ones!) Whether or not someone is taken in by the marketing ploy or not - does it really matter? Sure none of the Canon cameras can really compete on a price vs spec level. But does that mean you can't get a great image out of them? I've seen 7D and 5D stuff blown up onto the big screen and intercut with Alexa footage. Does that mean my A7s couldn't give a better image than both of those cameras? Of course it can. So what? I like the way the A7s works, and I like the image I can get out of it. I love that I can use it as a B-cam for an F5, or Alexa or whatever. I prefer the ergonomics, the usability and the image to the Blackmagic pocket (and honestly, even the Blackmagic Cinema Cam). Many would think me stupid for having such an opinion ('haven't you seen the colours from the A7s?!!) and yet there are plenty professional filmmakers (even Hollywood filmmakers) using the camera day-to-day and producing beautiful images. Yep - the lines of cameras they are trying to push are outdated, and outspecced by any of the current DSLMs. Doesn't mean one can't get a decent image out of it - and it doesn't mean you can't tell a good story with it. Look at Tangerine. While everyone here was busy arguing over which camera had the better dynamic range, or colour rendition, a bunch of filmmakers went out and shot a film on an iPhone, told a great story and got into Sundance, and is now opening in cinemas across the world. And you laugh at someone who buys a 70D... Maybe Canon are having their Kodak moment - though Kodak never had cinema cameras to bolster their line up... Pretty much every camera company uses this kind of marketing to push their cameras. You can laugh at the fact that their cameras are overpriced, but can you blame them for trying to push their product (which may or may not be declining in sales) as much as they possibly can?1 point

It is an 8.3x zoom (24mm x 8.3 = 200mm). 25-250mm would be 10x zoom for example. 25-400mm well that is 16x. If you just want the zoom range and 4K on 1" sensor and not the fancy constant F2.8 aperture or slow-mo then the FZ1000 is seriously worth considering over the RX10 M2, it is also considerably cheaper.... especially in Europe where it is 750 euros vs 1599 for the Sony! No SLOG or built in ND though!1 point
-
Just installed Capture One (which is pretty nice btw, might replace Lightroom for me) so I could give the RX10M2's RAWs a spin and I wouldn't be surprised if it's the 14 bit uncompressed people are talking about (http://blog.esgi.co.uk/2015/06/sony-7r-ii-rx10-ii-rx100-iv-still-lossy.html). The images grade extremely well (you can recover ridiculous amounts of detail via Capture One's High Dynamic Range feature (especially in the highlights) and except the poor high ISO performance (usable up to about 2500 ISO, I'd say), which is to be expected from such a small sensor, the quality is unlike anything I've seen from a camera this size. I'd even go as far as saying that it trumps the a7s (which I didn't like too much stills-wise) except regarding DoF and low light of course. Can't even say the Nikon D800 is much better all of the time (except high ISO again, the RX10M2 pretty much sucks here with color noise and whathaveyou), this little Sony sensor really seems to have some magic going on. If only it wasn't Sony with their idiotic policies, abysmal support and retarded software limitations. First still as shot, second with stupendous amounts of whatnot. :p1 point

"If you buy this bundle you are not an artist and never will be, because you do not care." Ha! Pushing the boundaries of rhetoric, but you gotta do what you gotta do. Suffice to say, there's a perfectly legitimate possibility that an arrogant affluent rich kid with a hell of a lot of superior story ideas than industry professionals might end up with one of these cameras, simply because they just want something to shoot with, don't really know better because they're concentrating on story, and they'll then proceed to create something incredible...since, you know, filmmaking is kind of about effective storytelling, not sensor resolution. I seriously don't know if this is your true sentiment, tongue-in-cheek satire, click-bait, or just slamming Canon because of some internal-debate-feud you have going in your mind. You mean like DMX...? I'd like to know what their light output is/some photometrics. I don't mind the idea of 'modular' lighting, but I can't see myself using these. Potentially not enough output, too small (so inherently hard) - I could see myself ganging a few together and putting diffusion over them, but then it defeats the purpose. There'll be some obscure cases, but I don't think it's the second coming of lighting equipment.1 point
