  1. This is the first thing I shot with the Rangefinder. Just a simple rack focus followed by a look at the effect it has on the flares (adds more blue basically). The focus mechanism is very, very smooth. This is paired with the Kowa B&H. I'll try it out on the SLR Magic Anamorphot tomorrow. https://vimeo.com/134275447

  2. So Gawker melted down - I followed it - the biggest thing that was really behind it wasn't what was on the surface - that poor story about the conde nast exec - it was corporate management taking over editorial - and well it was secretly really about this article - http://gawker.com/brands-are-not-your-friend-1684232182 - why brands aren't your friends. In their meeting they talked about firing the author -Sam Briddle - as Gawker starts to care more about making money. Some say growing up - but there is nothing wrong with this article - it's not offensive to a person, it doesn't destroy someone - it's purely truth to power. And they wanted to fire the writer - and that's not good to admit publically. But why should we care - we are filmmakers? Because all film is politcal. We are a wing of journalism even if you are a VFX artist on Michael Bay films -that's political - it's your choice to support this modern blockbuster world - and you are making something seen by many. You can't escape the politics. And part of why I got banned from 2 other forums is because I started to show the truth behind the corporate control of those sites - almost the same reason they wanted to fire Sam - and I thought that corporate control of a forum to advance the discussion and science of filmmaking was harmful to the online principle. It was so nice of the admin to create this site. But see this is the thing - I work for advertising and I love them and the people I work for - they are all great people - we all are good people - we just know that corporations exist except for b corporations to solely make money. Everything else is secondary. So I have no ethical quandry being a counter to some of these measures especially since I believe in environmental and economic sustainability, just like the Pope, and that puts us in conflict. This doesn't mean I don't like working on commercials - I actually love it because it gives me the free time to do my own work to try to help the world out - I couldn't do that if I was working for little to no pay on a doc that would take 70 hours of my week away. I love advertisers - but there has to be boundaries. Or soceity will continue to fade more and more into environmental and social decay. There is a reason the press exists - it's a fundemental part of freedom and democracy. When the press starts to cowtow to corporate interests anymore than it already has, it gets weak. And then the bad will continue, more and more. And this isn't fun to watch.

  5. Interesting topic/subject, but why only highlight the 'bad' example? I agree a travel video is usually better when it consists of more than a collection of beautiful land/cityscapes. Usually I like road trip videos better, even if their production value might not be as awesome as some of the travel videos. Some examples I like: This is just a guy travelling with some friends, a GH4 + 12-35mm 2.8 and a DJI Phantom 2. Simple, but great atmosphere: Simple action cam footage, but nothing gets me more into the travel mood than a video like this. And for some reason it makes me want to buy a Nikon

  6. I have just received my SLR Magic Rangefinder which is a groundbreaking concept. It transfers focus away from the main lens focus ring onto a dedicated buttery smooth geared 240 degree cinema lens focus ring and attached to the main lens like a screw on filter. With the main lens set to infinity, focus is done purely through the SLR Magic Rangefinder. This means that the awkward to focus Kowa 2x anamorphic lenses are now as usable as an Iscorama. It means Nikon glass can finally focus the 'right' way! It also gives closer focussing abilities for lenses that have a long minimum focus distance (like the 2m of an Iscorama anamorphic) and prevents the focus breathing inherit in all non-cinema photographic lenses. 7. Canon is repackaging a selection of their DSLRs to appeal more to video producers. Writ large with the phrases "FULL HD" and "SELFIE" the bundles come with one of Rode's cheapest mics and a 32GB SD card. The standard kit zoom (18-55mm) is provided as normal. Prices are anything but low end though with the bundles ranging from a hefty $899 for the T5i to a GH4/NX1 busting $1649 for the 70D. Read the full article

  8. If the lens is able to hold infiinity focus while zoom then it probably would. Another interesting possibility with this is close focus on dual focus setups. This acts roughly like a variable 0 - 1.1 power diopter. So when focus is set to infinity for both it focuses from infinity down to about 3 feet. But for something like the Kowa if you set the lens and anamorphic to focus at 4.5 feet it will now go from 4.5 feet to 1.8 feet. These numbers are approximate and based off the 3' min focus reported for this thing but the concept should be correct. It would be nice if someone who has one can test that.

I'm shooting as we speak No need for a changing bag on the K3, daylight spools only.

  11. Well for a start a Kowa is $300-400, and the Iscorama is 10x that at $3000+ That is a reason. Also the Kowa is sharper at fast apertures than the Iscorama and vignettes a bit less so you can go slightly wider. Flare on the Kowa is better than on the multicoated (MC) Iscoramas. Quite evenly matched vs single coated Iscoramas. The only thing holding it back was the shit focus. Unusable. Iscorama acted like a normal manual focus prime lens. But still the Iscorama isn't as easy to focus as a normal lens. Usually the ring is a bit too stiff and travel is way too long for quick focus changes and run & gun. No gearing for follow focus either. A Kowa with Rangefinder should beat the Iscorama for focus AND match it for image quality... I am about to shoot with it so will find out as despite Van Diemen taking away one of my Iscoramas for what seems like a million years now, I still have my other Iscorama 36 MC to play with.

  12. My camera arrived today Cant say how thrilled I am to try it (still waiting for the adapters to arrive though), but first impressions are, the camera is really small...I was expecting it to be near the size of the 7D, but its slightly slimmer than my 600D. Construction wise looks sturdy and that screen looks amazing. Cant wait to test my Samyang lenses on this beauty !

yes. If its a "real" conversion they recenter the lens as well. But most K3 shooters are happy with just the filed gate. The included zoom covers from 27mm and up. On the m42 one can use a Zenitar 16mm or Peleng 8mm with full coverage. On http://www.k3camera.com/ there are instructions on how to do it. Also one can buy the gate only on eBay.

  14. Rolling shutter isn't non existent in 4K but it's definitely less than on other cameras. Puts in a very respectable performance there. Best to explain with images so please wait for final review. HDMI is uncompressed 8bit 4:2:2 4K on both the RX10 II and RX100 IV... Yes 4K HDMI on a pocket camera

  15. The f number is the relation between the size of the aperture and focal length, it measures light density so to speak. A 2.8 will always have the same brightness because it doesn't care about the sensor that's behind it, but when the sensor is bigger it recollects more light because density*area=amount of light. The amount of light is the signal, the information. A bigger sensor area recieves more light so the signal is stronger. The sensor is the measuring device, a perfect measuring device doesn't have noise, but these devices don't exist. The bigger the signal is the less you will have problems with these imperfections, because the information is much bigger than the noise (the imperfections in measuring). If we take a whole picture as measuring unit, we take the same picture on one full frame camera and on a 1" camera it will have the same exposure parameters (same speed, same iso, same aperture) so it will have the same exposure, but the small sensor will have to be better, more efficient, to have the same amount of noise. The DOF will be different. I don't know how efficient the sony sensor is, but I can imagine it will be ok up to iso 1600. And shallow DOF is not the thing you are looking for when buying a RX10ii.

  16. These types of wonderful technological shots are great and impressive. Now. To us in 2015 they're pretty, full of DR, sharp high resolution images. Looks cool, right? Well, here's where I project into the future a bit and make a prediction that might seem weird and off base, but here it goes: None of that tech stuff is going to matter in a handful of years. Your 14 year old nephew, who was born yesterday, is going to have at his fingertips the exact same capabilities you just witnessed in that video...and millions of other kids and motion picture enthusiasts will have that same capability. That jaw dropping IQ and DR and color science just won't matter because it'll be readily available at Wal-Mart for $200. The drone to fly it will cost $145, $110 after manufacture's rebate. Let's not overlook the reality that this younger generation armed with this technology from the time they leave the womb is going use the narcissistic-social-media-shit out of it. They'll probably spend less time OFF camera than on it. So, we can all go ga-ga over how nice the video looks, and it does, (It's a nice video. I'd be proud of it if I did it) but without a good story behind it, all we're witnessing a glorified contemporary slideshow. Which is fine, for the moment. I firmly believe that those of us that hang their hat on the fact that they can attain technically superior images are going to be in trouble when that capability is so commonplace it's irrelevant. But, that's my opinion. Really really great IQ is reaching a democratization. 16K? 50 stops of DR? That'll rival human eyesight, so where do you go then? 3D? I dunno. Maybe; not sure. Regardless, what story you decide to actually tell with that capability is going to be the only thing that is important because the tech stuff just won't have the same value. Hey, I could be totally wrong. But I just feel it's going to be how you use the tool rather than the fact you have it. Also, editing. People that are good and inventive at editing. Man, they're going to have an incredibly in-demand skill set. View "Watchtower of Turkey" to see how that ability harmonizes with inventive visuals.

  17. Anything with some semblance of a story, really. Combine that with good cinematography and it should be a winner.

  18. These are like new, barely touched. These pair nicely with either of SLR Magic's Anamorphots (2x or 1.33x) to allow closer focus. The set sells for $300 new and I'd like to knock fifty bucks off that and sell it for $250 shipped to anywhere in the USA. Comes with original case. Payment via PayPal preferred.

  19. At a glance, this looks similar to what the FM lens and the Rectilux are doing, but far simpler, lighter, and less complex. And the price is a steal. Hopefully SLR Magic combines this and the Anamorphot 2x in a single housing. No one in their right mind would use the 2x without this. I'm excited. And even more so for the upcoming anamorphic prime lens. In my mind, I dream of having cheap second-hand Alexa 4:3s and inexpensive anamorphic lens sets. Here's hoping that five years from now, this becomes a reality.

  21. Yes correct. Yep and gives them hard stops as well. Canon L lenses stand to benefit a lot from that! Correct. This is use I am most excited about on a personal level. Yes basically gives a proper cine focussing ring to any lens, even if they have no focus ring at all like the Nikon 1 series stuff. This one is right up there with Speed Booster as a game changer. Absolutely love the concept. Let's hope it delivers enough performance to make good on the promise. I wouldn't expect an entirely free lunch, i.e. as pin sharp at F1.4 as the prime by itself, but when you take into how much it could change, a staggering amount, I'm willing to accept some trade offs to get it, especially if it means turning this into an Iscorama beater with butter smooth cine focus & 3ft close focus for a mere $600...

    ND Filter buying advice

Another vote for Schott Glass Variable ND filters... I purchased one by Zomei which was 18 layer multi-coated ultra slim etc. Works will with little color shift of the NX1. They also make a 82mm version in case you need something larger. I've also had a Schott glass UV filter by the same company and that made the image slightly harder / more intense looking but it may have been the coatings etc and not the Schott glass, but for Variable ND Schott glass is plus as far as I can see.

  24. Included two in the opening post but didnt embed, here they are: I really like both, especially Watchtower of Turkey and it's use of...that technique where you float and zoom into thing...I have NO idea how to do that and it's an incredible use of the technique. I'll throw my Tasmania roadtrip video in here just for good measure, had a lot of fun filming it although in hindsight I'd scrap the music and put together a soundscape. At the time I was all about the visuals though.

  26. It is tongue in cheek satire making a point that Canon have released merely a new box as a whole new filmmaker package and charged top whack for it at that. It is making fun of the kind of idiot who would fall for this kind of cynical marketing ploy... and yes there are plenty of them. Hopefully not too many on here but sometimes I have my doubts
