Quick RX100 iv 4k test + Ongoing thoughts
elkanah77 and 4 others reacted to Zach Ashcraft for a topic
Just received the RX100IV today and I'm dang excited to create some things with it. I had the mark 1 and despite its limitations, had lots of fun shooting with it. I created a 15 second instagram video at work today just as a means to try out the 4K mode. I was in a hot warehouse in Texas right next to an open door. After 1 take, it began to display the overheat symbol. After two takes, it told me to let the camera cool and shut off. Switching to 1080p mode and I was just fine. This is by no means an A Camera, but I do think it is an absolutely incredible creative tool. Its so versatile! The 4K is sharp and clean, and the image grades well. This particular short was shot in Picture Profile 4 and graded with film convert to add a lot of punch. I'll continue to share my thoughts and include more video after I've had more of a chance to shoot with it. General light coming from a nearby open door. A bit of spot from below added by a pair of Lumos Trip Pro LED's. Cinevate Duzi V3 slider.5 points -

We need more Zach's in here! I mostly gravitate toward crime fiction. Started a production company with my childhood buddy called The Sabi Company nearly a decade ago. We've made 7 or 8 features in that time. As well as a handful of shorts. Our latest, Down and Dangerous, was our first genre picture and the first to not lose money. We've also created Artis Entertainment to distribute our titles directly and through partnerships with other distributors. Most recently, we signed with Paramount to distribute Down and Dangerous internationally. To a filmmaker like me, that is an unforgettable milestone that I'm very proud of, even if it is a bit like winning the lottery. The next movies include more action, a sci-fi survival story, a neo-noir, and hopefully countless others. I have no other creative or professional ambitions in life other than to make movies until i'm dead.5 points -

I enjoy being a part of this community, and would love to hear more about the films you are creating and/or are wanting to create. What do you think are your biggest obstacles to creating the content you want to be creating, if you aren't making it already? I'll start - I started with documentary work for a non-profit, shooting on a canon t2i. After about 2 years of weddings I've wanted to move to bigger documentary projects and commercial work. My biggest struggle having not gone to film school has been connecting with other filmmakers to collaborate with, though i'm making more friends with each project I work on.2 points -

You seem like a good intentioned guy Zach (and you've got a great name!) but I think you're making a big deal out of nothing here buddy. He just wanted a little advice on cameras for a particular situation, and he was given it. No need to go on an artistic-merit rant!2 points -
In my experience FM works well with most lenses and doesn't work well with some. I couldn't get a sharp image using some really fast lenses wide open in some instances, but in most cases, especially when using a slower lens or using lenses stopped down, or using vintage primes with simple element designs produced very sharp images and it didn't add or subtract from the image that you would get from the anamorphic attachment alone. I guess in that respect the performance is pretty much the same with the Rectilux, although not speaking with any scientific comparative knowledge. However both the Rectilux and Focus Module has significant lens breathing and both are quite cumbersome in size as well. It really depends on your style of shooting but FM was a bit too big and heavy for the type of work I mostly do thesedays. Which is why I really like the idea of the Rangefinder.2 points

GH4 Anamorphic Mode
Zak Forsman reacted to dwijip for a topic
First time actually utilising the Anamorphic option on the GH4 as there is no HDMI out in this mode. This was a just a little sketch I did in my room, by myself using the ImgApp. It is really great that the anamorphic mode can produce a 4:3 ratio image but it comes with some catchlines like no 1080p, no HFR, no HDMI out etc. For me it kind of gets pointless trying to use a tiny LCD screen for monitoring when you've got your camera heavily rigged up for shooting with other gear. So I guess I will stick with just 16:9 and cropping and hope for a firmware update. Speaking of firmware updates, jesus christ are they going to ferment V log before they release it.1 point -
Hi all, As the title says, i can't decide between the RX10ii, GH4 or NX1, and i hope you can help me with making a decision. I'm a independed videographer since 2007, i started with a Panasonic HVX200, later (and still have) a Canon t2i, then, till now i'm using a Canon 5d Mark2. I think it's time for a change and an investment, so i'm looking for a new camera. Because of the technology going so fast i don't want to spend a huge amount of money, and so i have a few options. 1. RX10ii - Interesting because of it's lens, frame rates and S-LOG, worried about Low-Light and small sensor. I need to keep my 5dmii for pro-photography (sometimes i got asked for that). (costs € 1599,00) 2. GH4 - Interesting with Speedbooster so i can use my EF-lenses, don't know about it's stills, so i don't know if i should sell my 5d for it? (costs: € 1499, and € 999,00 for speedbooster XL). 3. NX1 with 16-50S 2.0 - 2.8 lens + adapter for EF for manual use, i've seen some less-positive reviews about this cam, but i've seen amazing 4k video from it. I'm aware of the h.265 codec and it's workflow, but i think this made be interesting one to sell my 5d for. I'm also aware of it's rolling shutter, but i'm a kind of laid back filmer and never had any problem with it on my 5d .(i can get the NX1 with 16-50S lens for € 1999,00) Mostly i'm making promotional videos for companies, so a lot of inside filming with available light and, interviews. Well, i'm hoping for some good advice!1 point

Why No Love For This Camera?

As the world goes nuts for the new A7rII and the impending Ursa mini, JVC seems to be overlooked yet with firmware 2.0 on the GY-LS300 (out in September) giving some great features, surely it deserves some recognition. Here's what it's got (will have): ● JVC Log ● Cinema 4K recording mode ● Prime Lens Zoom (that's right, zoom with your prime lens) ● Micro Four Thirds mount with Super 35 sensor (full frame with a speedbooster) ● .mov files (yay! no hunting down your files buried away in a far away folder) ● Duel SD card slots (no expensive cfast cards) ● 4:2:2 full HD up to 60p ● Built in ND filters ● XLRx2 audio ● Built in HD streaming engine over wifi and 4G LTE connectivity So, on paper this certainly looks like a very capable camera. I myself will be upgrading in September so will wait till reviews for the Ursa mini, a7rII are out and plenty of user experience aired before deciding but surely this camera deserves a mention, why no love? Check out this link on their site about the new firmware: http://pro.jvc.com/pro/pr/2015/releases/gyls300_v2.html1 point -

SLR Magic Rangefinder vs. FM vs. Rectilux..?
bootsie reacted to Zak Forsman for a topic
The Rectilux is nearly half the weight of the Focus Module. The Focus Module alone weighs 850 grams, Rectilux alone weighs just under 470 grams. I don't own a Focus Module, but i can say that breathing aside, The Rectilux is a neutral addition to my scope and taking lens. By that I mean, the taking lens is not restricted any more than it would be on its own in terms of shooting wide open. Chromatic aberration or blooming is not further exacerbated by the Rectilux. It is definitely more costly, but in my opinion, it's money worth spending for a piece of gear that doesn't degrade the optical chain in any way. And the breathing is nearly identical to what you see with this old Russian Lomo anamorphics. And you can keyframe it out via horizontal scaling in post if you need to.1 point -

Thanks for the reply Zak. I don't think I could have ever guessed it was shot on an AF100. About your other two films, I guess, you guys would be the first people to be Officially using the GH4 for a feature. That looks like a good story to add for publicity and advertising as well.1 point -

NX1 4k is pretty damn good according to people much less biased (I own it) and much more experienced than me. Samsung has been very good about timely firmware updates and should hopefully continue that into the future with added features, similar to how the GH4 has a new log mode. That 16-50 S lens is usually $1200 alone so that seems like a very good deal. The color and the quality of the 4k is definitely the camera's best feature. It does however use h265 encoding that hasn't been integrated by most editing programs, and you'll have to use a converter like Rocky Mountains converter to use the footage. I can't even view the clips in VLC without it hanging up. So, added time until the h265 catches on. The camera has a few bugs left in it, but like I said Samsung has thus far been very good with firmware--the only firmware problem being it erases all your settings every time you update it. The lens selection past the 16-50 S is pretty limited. There were rumors that lenses would be revealed late 2015 or so. But just rumors so far. I do wish the OLED screen on it could pivot to view from the front instead of just up and down. Using LUTs or FilmConvert, there haven't been any profiles or lut packs for the NX1 yet if that matters.1 point

Yeah that photo at 7.28 was really blown out in the sky, but the bride actually looked awesome. The black and white one looked great to me. I took it as this being someone who isn't obsessed with things that we necessarily always need to care about. I thought it might be Mickey Mouse time when I saw that first photo but I left thinking this is an interesting guy who has been at it along time and has his own opinions and standards. I think he might be a guy that is willing to let a sky look nastily overblown for the sake of getting the best shot of the bride and groom. Whereas most people would want to play by the rules at their expense. I dunno, I am still a noob.1 point

I tried this camera once when we had it as a b-cam on a shoot. The body is quite small and feels a bit plasticky so I didn't like it at all in that aspect. Can't really say much about the image since I didn't have a chance to play with the footage myself but based on the shooting experience (ergonomics and usability) with the camera I was not that impressed with it.1 point -

Wow, I couldn't have agreed more. I find people to collaborate with difficult to find too. Most people are just looking to find employment. I like complicated Thrillers, where there are different sub-plots and interesting back stories. Also, I feel the human mind is hardly explored enough in films or even documentaries. The kind of strange, curious or dark sides to humans could make some great films. I also love period dramas.1 point

Okay? What's the point of this? The guy posted on a forum about equipment asking what a good 4K camera was (GH4 is great for me, but maybe G7 is better for travel) and your response is 'you don't need it, art isn't about equipment'.1 point

And Lightworks is available for Ubuntu or Fedora/RHEL/CentOS as a $25 per month pro license option with no obligation, just quit when the job is done. I just used it for a show (using CentOS 6) where I had to go through a season of episodes, primarily to make batch lists for pulls. It allows you to create rolling cue points with name and timecode, then you can use those cues to create subclips or export a spreadsheet, which was exactly what I needed for editorial. I was also able to create custom clip overlays as templates with my reference name, source timecode in h:m:s, subclip runtime in frames, source reel name etc. Very intuitive interface.1 point

Asked over on DPReview and apparently at infinity focus the FOV is significantly wider. This does not bode well with me, does this bother anyone shooting with this lens? Curious on other filmmakers input, most of the folks over on DPR are photographers. I know it's not a manual focus lens but I've seen it used in quite a few "test" videos so I can't help but wonder if people still find it a suitable tool for their shoots.1 point -

I'm also more of a writer than anything. Going for really human stuff, kind of like Cassavetes or Joe Swanberg, kind of episodic, but making sure to keep it all significant. I don't know if I'd be as comfortable as those guys with the actors improvising as much with my scripts, but don't have much experience there yet. With amateur actors and not being able to pay them much or anything, improvising a little might be necessary. I'm pretty much adding scripts to a drawer for now, tweaking them slightly and writing treatments for them just to be prepared. Actors are a big obstacle, and production budget. Though a slightly low-fi feel could be pretty great if I can get great performances. Like a bit of a documentary feel, emphasizing the acting even more. I have a really simple short that only needs two actors. I figure I should definitely try to do that one as soon as possible. This forum helped me feel more confident as a cinematographer, which is good considering I'll probably be my entire crew most of the time. Also, I've been interning for a friend's company, and his boss just sold a script to Clint Eastwood, so that'll hopefully lead to a lot of contacts, which is exciting. Sorry, trying not to use this as a rant about yourself thread, but it maybe kind of is for that , which I'm not complaining about1 point -
Primarily, I consider myself a writer, where I have had a few successes in the horror genre, with a couple contests. I made one short film that I entered in a few festivals... Haven't heard anything yet. With a little luck. and a lot of perseverance, I hope to be making indie horror and thriller features in the future. In the meantime, I have a few ultra short films in preproduction. If you're looking for some material, I have a few scripts I'm doing a final pass on. Sorry... I just figured I'd put it out there.1 point

I haven't, but it wasn't overly warm after 27 or so minutes of 4K recording. Also I believe that due to the body ergonomics the RX10 isn't as overheating prone as the (even if improved) A7RII. Still, though, I'd never expect Canon reliability from the Sony. The lens does seem a bit frail for the long run imho.1 point

quick update before the full test: Overheating seems to be less in FF mode. I've reached the 30 minute mark without a heat warning in FF mode, whereas in S35 mode heat warning was reached at about 15 minutes and the camera shut down at 20 minutes. IBIS was on for FF test, but camera was resting on the table.1 point
-
picked up my a7r II today and the very first thing I did was see how it handles long takes. 20 minutes of record time in 4k 100 Mbit before the camera overheats and shuts off. You get a warning message something along these lines before it goes blank though: "Camera too hot. Let it cool down." How coy Sony. This has to be addressed or I will have to return the camera. The s35 Jello is disappointing, but something I can deal with by sticking to FF mode for most of my shots. The camera overheating makes it a very bad choice for any kind of documentary or live recording. Its one of those things you can't explain your client. Imagine missing the moment because the camera overheated in room-temp. I am sure it can handle longer takes in 1080p, but lets not try to find reasons to make something broken acceptable. I hope there is a way Sony can correct this, but it seems like more of a heat sink issue rather than something that can be fixed with a firmware update.1 point

Cheers buddy that was the drummer Garth, he's a great animator: http://vimeo.com/garthlee I just checked out computer chess, it looks meticulously retro, I think I'll give that a watch! I'm trying to plan a shoot in Berlin so I can come over for an extended period, so we can do it then if I can wangle it, it's such a great city... haha cheers, check out Garth's animations for more fun, he's a great drummer AND animator, a rare thing! http://vimeo.com/garthlee Yes it's not really authentic as such, we did start off with a look closer to Kung Fury, much softer, but it looked so fuzzy in some of the wide shots we settled on a an "impression" of VHS, a bit of the feel rather than authentic. I did actually have an old VHS ready to genuinely dub the film, but we thought better of it I've knocked up a press release so yes we're going to throw it to a few blogs, thanks for the suggestions, I'll add em to the list. Oh BTW I thought I'd add that this was all C100 and Ninja 2, not the AVCHD internal. It was recorded to DNxHD 220x. Actually one shot came from the AVCHD backup, as occasionally the Ninja just doesn't trigger (about 1 in 200 times) which is a bummer. Still you'd never spot the shot so all is well...1 point

First zero budget short film, seeking feedback!
Zach Goodwin reacted to sanveer for a topic
I agree with most if what Zack and Julian have said. The Short is actually pretty good, the folley and sound design are very good, Ibreakised that there is no background score, but the folley and other sounds more than make up for that. The lighting is very decent, and even the dark bits weren't disappointing. I guess a little background score to built the whole thing up, rising to a crescendo at the very end would have made it absolutely stellar. I cannot believe you shot the intercuts with just a single camera. Also, the intercuts could have been a little faster at the end, to increase the pace, immediately before, like Juliam suggested, probably adding the slow motion in the end. Overall, still very impressive.1 point -
