  1. I took out my GH4 to a Ren Faire today testing out Portrait profile with 96fps HD. I've always used either Cine D, or Cine V, but wanted to try something different. So I shot everything with Portrait profile. After importing to Premiere CC I added Arri Alexa SL profile LUT. The colors looked really nice. I then tried just added some contrast to the original image and comparing the 2. Have a look and tell me that the Alexa LUT doesn't produce cleaner colors? Honestly do need opinions. First is Alexa LUT. Second is Contrast only.

  5. Went to a race track. Only had about two hours, no tripod, no credentials to get closer to the track or a decent microphone. But I still wanted some video from it. Thank god for the camcorder Would be really fun to bring a good mic next time, get credentials and do some reporting as well. Simply didn't have the time for preparation or at the track. Oh well maybe by winter I have time for my hobby again

  6. Hello, Long time lurker, finally decided to register to learn and contribute. I've been doing a little testing with some of my Contax Zeiss glass as a taking lens to my Iscorama. Previously, I've only used a Helios 44-2. The Zeiss is noticeably sharper and seems to work well. Sorry, no lens flares here - just a quick test of overall sharpness and bokeh. I tried using a Contax Zeiss 45mm f2.8 pancake, which made a a nice, compact setup, but it unfortunately wasn't as sharp and I'd hoped for. Drew

  7. In part 1 of the Sony A7R II review we will look at the A7R II not as a consumer camera but as a professional cinema camera. The benchmark for this camera is going to be the Canon 1D C. Read the full article

  8. I recently watched a video in which the reviewer claimed that there is a quick and easy fix for the Sony A7Rii and RX10ii overheat problems. He claimed all that need be done is to position the display so that it is away from the camera. He said by doing this he was able to record over an hour no problem. I'm sure many here would be interested if this claim can be confirmed. Can someone with an A7Rii perform a test and report their findings here? Claim is at 00:19:30

  9. The Nx1 has amazing video quality, heres 2 frame grabs from a 4k video from the NX1 (taken from facebook, cuz I lost the original files). Ungraded, straight from the camera (once again, taken from Facebook, so its compressed by facebook). I was using the Canon 50mm f1.8 at the time, camera settings were Normal Gamma, -10 sat. -10 sharpenning. You really cant get any better, specially for the price...I had a Canon 600D, and its just another league, even comparing to the D800 video mode, the only thing I'd love would be a Speedbooster to make it "Full-Frame", that would make these cameras sell like hot buns !

    RX10 II Dynamic Range

Did some testing today and yesterday at a state park near my home. Mainly video as I'm trying to learn how to grade the slog2 into something I like. I did take some pictures and at some point I took a shot that for whatever reason (I believe I had left the ND filter turned on ) it turned out way underexposed. I took this shot not for it's artistic value but more for a look at detail rendered. Well, thinking the shot was ruined I figured I might as well crank up some exposure in lightroom via the shadow recovery and exposure sliders. Wow. It's like someone turned the lights on and with almost no noise penalty. No color banding. Nothing. Just plenty of detail and my respect for this one inch sensore genius of a camera! As for a stills camera, this RX10 2 reminds me a lot more of my D800E than the gh4 ever did as far as the look and dynamic range of the image produced. This might not blow you away the way it did me, but I just didn't expect such a clean photo from something so drastically underexposed. Especially from such a small sensor camera. Have a look... I could have boosted this much further but I was going for natural.

  11. Yes I was playing that game till recently. I have had a change of heart. Making short films with old gear that you pretend is new gear also can get you that amount of views. I did that with my werner herzog review of the ursa mini 4.6k and had a great run.

    Shutter Speed NX1

I've noticed this same jitter when shooting a car moving horizontally through the screen. My take is shooting a 24p in 4k just isn't a fast enough frame rate, which is why we all want UHD @60p. You'll notice in your video the problem doesn't occur until the car is moving horizontally across a static camera shot. I would bet if you shot that same scene in 1080 @60p that jitter wouldn't be there. The only other way to combat that is moving the camera horizontally in the same direction as the car, requiring shooting from another moving car, or use your drone.

  13. Yes, it's a bazooka! I completely agree with you. If I'm honest, I haven't bought a new camera for 3 years. The last one I bought was a Panasonic GH3. I bought a load of old FD and M42 lenses for it. I never loved the camera, but I was happy with the work I was producing. Business still going well. I'm still using it now and rent the FS7 when required. I never jumped on the 4k bandwagon - I want more than just a jump in resolution. I pre-ordered the URSA Mini as I love the Blackmagic image. Also I put down a small deposit (not the full fee) so I could monitor the progress of the camera up until it's eventual release. I can cancel whenever, but it's likely I won't. Most of my clients ask for cinematic imagery, high frame rates and high resolution images - features that many other (sort of) affordable cameras don't have. The URSA Mini does - so in the scheme of things, this could be a blossoming relationship with the new dude on the block.

  14. Not perfect, but actually good news here: http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?339161-Newsshooter-Sony-A7RII-overheats-and-shutdown-after-recording-4K-for-a-while&p=1986567078&viewfull=1#post1986567078 "Follow up And I apologize if I posted this already I've been very busy. I tested this again multiple times last night but instead of triggering recording on the camera I triggered recording on the shogun. And the result was that I could record continuously until one of the batteries ran out, usually the cameras, sometimes the shoguns. At most I got about an hour and a half with no overhear warnings; when it shut down is because the battery was exhausted ( as per the message on the screen). I did not test on external power. If I triggered the recording in the camera, making sure that internal recording was off, it would overheat in 30 minutes. I don't know what's going on here and have passed my thoughts to Atomos. My theory is that processing is kicking in when you click record even though it's not dumping to the card but if you just let it roll without hitting the record button on the camera you get the output right from the sensor. I tested the same theory with the RX 100 Mark four. I got the same result. That camera records for less than five minutes before overheating if you record it on camera but if you just roll from The HDMI you can get an hour out of it before the battery dies. Again, with no overheating. Weird."

  15. thanks man. The Alexa SL LUT is part of Premiere Lumetri. it was on the edge if clipping. The contrast pushed it over. they vary. This particular LUT adds contrast and color to the GH4 profile. yep I've had shitty results with the other LUTS like Blackmagic. I just tested this one on a whim and was shocked.

  19. Get a 50D instead of a 550D. The 550D is seriously bottlenecked by the SD card, the 50D can handle higher resolutions. The 50D doesn't record audio though, so you have to do that externally. 7D is also a good option, but not as cheap as the 50D. 5D Mark II is even better, and pretty great combined with a VAF anti moire filter. Gets you close to 5D3 performance/resolutions. My Canon EOS 50D is for sale by the way Here you can see al the Canon cameras and their ML raw capabilities (it doesn't list 4:3 modes though): https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AgQ2MOkAZTFHdFFIcFp1d0R5TzVPTVJXOEVyUndteGc#gid=5 I shot this in 1280x960 24 fps, but I think you can get a bit higher. I don't know what are the 4:3 options in the recent ML builds.

  20. I got shot of my 5DIII back in January, got offered 2100€ for it and never looked back. I use a lot of adapted lenses and not all played well with the full frame 5D3, in particular Minolta Rokkors. There were problems with the 58 1.2 hitting the mirror when set to infinity so, it had to go. Picked up an a6000 and has performed brilliantly in the 5D3's absence. However, I've invested in some anamorphic adapters and would love to get the best from them. I would consider picking up a 550d just to use the 4:3 ratio with Magic Lantern. It being super 35, I'd have no mirror issues with my lenses. Any experience with Magic Lantern and this cam?

  21. I'll definitely give Standard another day in court because it's been a long time since i did my tests of each profile, but I haven't had any issues keeping reds red in Natural. And I found it produced the best skintones.

  23. yeah, i shoot in the "Natural" profile. The only difference between that and "Portrait" is one step plus or minus in color saturation (i forget which). but the Alexa LUT i have is a nice tool to have for GH4 clips. Lately I've been using my own LUT generated form Davinci that used the Kodak 5207 ImpulZ LUT as a base with a bunch of my own adjustments on top of that.

  24. Thanks Andrew for the info - it's really crazy, the camera has so many great and logical aspects, but Sony still finds a way to make things complicated. This limitation means i can either have a proper magnification mode for video and can only shoot 36MP photos, or i have a limited magnification and can shoot the full 42MP photos. Or i have the best photo resolution and the best magnification, but can't frame right before recording a video! To make things more difficult, Sony wants us to buy several functions like the timelapse mode from their playmemories store which right now offers ca. 30 apps that could be installed on the camera. I would understand that for special applications, but not basics like a timelapse in a 3500 euro camera. At least among these 30 apps there are ca. 5-10 usefull tools that the competitor brands don't have, and some are free as well. It's just pain in the ass to install and manage. All in all the A7R2 feels as if i suddenly have the power of a second 1DC, GH4 and D800/5DsR available. Just if i could choose, for each specialized purpose i would still prefer to use the Canon, Pansonic or Nikon cameras. In cases where i only can bring one camera or i need the special strength of for example a second 1DC, the A7R2 now is a great choice. For each user who only has a 5D3, D800 etc, the camera also is a new great alternative. In general the camera doesnt offer better 4k video or phot images than the 2012 technology of a D800 or 1DC. It's a bit sad, because aside from a stop more in highlights, even the new Red Weapon doesnt seem to offer a different image compared to the 2011 Red Epic MX. Aside from 1-2 stops more in dynamic range, the C300 II probably also doesnt deliver a better image than the 1DC. This means that until the year 2018 we can be stuck with the same image quality options that we had 6 years ago. At some point technology does come to an end, which is seen in the audio world, where certain speaker / microphone standards have not been topped since 20-40 years. Sony has a really nice 50 megapixel sensor that's above what's in the A7R2 and right now built in the Pentax 645z and a Hasselblad and a Phase One. Unfortunately that only works with medium format and will have sensor cooling issues as well. Above that Phase One offers an 80 megapixel sensor, which is only usable until ISO 400(!). I guess the next 2-3 years will be about making existing technologies cheaper, products smaller, and combining more features. But the image quality has reached a certain limit.

Guys there is good news, Sony A7s ii is getting released very soon/just got a confirmation from sony. they are just waiting for the Sony A7rii to be getting released everywhere. Like india and some south american countries. Got very little info on specifications are, same base ISO,3200 But with internal 4k recording higher bit rate than A7rii.

  26. And it'll take a year for them to fix it. By the time they do, everyone will have built elaborate rigs for upside-down shooting.

  27. It effects close range as well, way more for that matter. Here is an example I have a lens turbo EF to m43. I use vintage lenses, mostly Contax Yashica (thanks Andy) To fit them to the lens turbo they need an adapter ring. I adjusted the Lens turbo so the Yashica lenses hit infinity without overshoot. Then I found a Yashica Auto Yashinon zoom1:3.5 45-115mm. It’s a M42 mount. It connects with an adapter ring to the EF lens turbo. Focus between 115 and 45 were completely off. So I checked if I could improve that by adjusting the lens turbo element. It’s not a real parfocal lens (I think), but it is now as close to parfocal as I can get it. If I now connect my C/Y they slightly overshoot when set to infinity …I couldn’t care less as the zoom lens suddenly is way easier to handle as everything stays in “focus” throughout the zoom range. Non of these lenses have an original EF mount, all adapterrings differ so to make it stick to one lensturbo/speedbooster you will have to make choices. Metabones advice is for varivocal lenses. From my understanding the Sigma 18-35 is a parfocal lens. And I think it’s your lens to go, so if I were you, I would make sure it behaves parfocal on the adapter …even if that means other lenses will suffer from it.

  28. The GH4 sensor is larger, but also higher resolution. The difference in actual pixel size isn't that extreme, the GH4 is maybe 20% larger pixels. And yes, the GH4 records to cheaper media with much smaller files. But it's also an inferior codec to record to. The XC100 is 8bit 422 internal at 305mbps. GH4 is 420 100mbps. That's a MASSIVE dump in compression. $2500 for the XC10, or $1500 for the GH4 and another $1000 for a decent lens. Call it "oversimplifying" if you want, but it's the truth. At $2500, the GH4 has options for better lenses and a (marginally) larger sensor, but the XC10 has a substantially better codec. In regards to the FZ1000, it may have a leica named lens, it might even be leica designed, but at that price point not a snowballs chance in hell it's leica manufactured. The FZ1000 also has smaller pixels and yet again, another inferior codec. It might get "close" to the XC10 if you have a very loose definition of the word close.
