  1. Sony allow as slow as 1/4sec at any frame rate. shooting at 25p and 1/5th sec then speeding it up by 500% gives beautiful low light results for timelapse type stuff. with the motion blur which is very pleasing for thing slike cars in the dark. https://vimeo.com/52579247

  2. Thank you for pointing this out as it often gets ignored: if you switch the NX1 to HD res it's almost a global shutter cam. When Cinema5d compared shutter speeds in the following chart they had the nerve to show the NX in UHD mode only on the far right - indicating it's the clear loser, while the A7R2 is given its HD crop speed, and the Amira winning even though it's only 2k. In HD the NX would be to the left of the chart. There is a lot of bias against this camera out there.

  3. Hello! We cant carry our NX1s, GH4s and A7s with us all the time. For those who want a good 4k camera that you can carry all the time, thats the best solution that I have found. The best Android phones shoot 4k with a bitrate of aprox 48Mbps. They are not bad, but they have too much compression artifacts, contrast, saturation etc. A few days ago I found an amazing app, and I would like to share it with everyone. I have no bonds with the app developer, but im afraid he will give up his project if there is not enough support. Im pretty sure he can make things even better. What we have now with the app is: - Flat picture profile (It recovers a good amount of highlights and a little bit of shadows) - Better noise reduction (more like film grain. The stock one is very blocky) - 24 fps - 30 fps - 200Mbps!!! Thats the best part! Much better video quality. Less macro blocking, less banding etc, so you can recover more detail, grade the videos with the less problems etc. Frame grab from the Samsung Galaxy S6 stock camera - 4k at 50Mbps Frame grab from the Samsung Galaxy S6 using the app at 200 Mbps There is a lot of room for improvements, like more manual control, more control over the picture profile etc. But I do think that, at the moment, thats the best 4k camera that you can carry around all the time! Lets support the guy, so he can make it even better! The name of the app is CINEMA 4K, and its available for free at the play store! Make sure to update your phone to 5.1.1!!!

  5. for this technique you want less frames per second. Shooting at 120fps means you will degrade image quality for no reason since each frame will be sharp, and low light benefits no longer apply. for instance, 25p at 1/5th of a second confirms perfectly when sped up to 500% since the 1/5th shutter equates to 5 frames being exposed with one image. hyperspeed by 500% smooths as if it were 25fps. shooting 24p and 1/4 sec means you need to speed up by 600% to keep the perfect conformation. 1/4 x 600% = 1/24th sec or 360degree shutter. this was shot on the humble NEX5n, more than 3 years ago at around 400iso i think. imagine how clean the a7s would be when in this mode.

  6. The codec itself doesn't affect image quality much. It's more about how the cameras process its raw information into that codec. From what I know, here's how I'd rate the cameras Sharpness: GH4 / NX1 (4k)BMPCCGH4 (1080p)NX1 / a6000 (1080p)Gradeability: BMPCC (by a large margin)GH4 / a6000NX1Colour (this is really subjective): BMPCCNX1a6000GH4Low light: a6000BMPCCGH4 / NX1Dynamic Range: BMPCCa6000GH4NX1

  8. Good day to all, Just wanted to warn this good community that some people on eBay UK are wise on the fact that quite a few of us are looking for second hand Canon 1DC. We bought 15 days ago a 1DC advertised very convincingly by a "photographer" from Worcester (UK). The 1DC "used a handful of times, primarily for 2 weddings videos in the summer, the shutter count on the camera is 7907." Long story short, after a few emails and a payment via Paypal, we got a tracking number from parcel2go which conveniently was totally non specific (so really, the opposite of a tracking number): no starting point address, no delivery address, no mention of the nature of the parcel, nothing at all... which is exactly what we got at the end of one stressful week. We had to call eBay and Paypal then, got refunded in full TODAY. But we consider this pretty much a miracle. At the end, we have to say that we probably did not verify thoroughly the identity of our seller i.e. his digital footprint, his web site or facebook or LinkedIn nor did we check enough the reality of the transaction. Be careful. Thanks for the good work. Phil ProduThing Ltd

  9. Hello, My name is Daniel Kharlak. I'm a long time reader and lurker and I've decided to join the forum and share some of my work. This is a film I shot in my senior year of film school for my friend John. We were looking for a look that was reminiscent of intimate 70s photography and wanted to avoid the crisp, shiny look of modern DSLRs and large-sensor cameras, and go for something grittier and all-together more old-school. So in a fit of monstrous insanity, we fitted an Eiki 16mm anamorphic adapter to a Panasonic HPX already wearing a Letus Depth-of-Field adapter. It was a Frankenstein-esque contraption that required calibration at the top of every day. It's a procedure and a look that I don't think anyone else has tried before. I hope that you guys enjoy! And try to spot the one single shot that we actually pulled focus on!

    Zoom H6

For anyone who is a 1-2 man crew and does their own audio I highly recommend the H6. I've been using the H4n for 4 years now and it finally fell and broke. I decided to get the H6 since it had such good reviews. The preamps absolutely destroy the H4n's. Not only is the audio quality 2x better, the menu system is much easier and has colored screen with a small boot up time. Just thought I'd throw this recommendation out there if anyone is wanting to improve on sound recording (with an H4n). http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/967366-REG/zoom_h6_handy_audio_recorder.html

    Big Bad Wolves 'look'

Just watched the trailer. What about the look is it that you are liking? If I had to guess it has a lot more to do with the lighting than the grading. Everything looks pretty natural, lots of practical lights and windows.

  12. Uhm, this was shot with a stabilized lens - the 16-35 F/4 IS. All handheld and purely casual shooting. IBIS is fine for short lenses, but really useless for 135mm+. Also you do know there are external EVFs that attach to the HDMI port, right? Like this one: IMO it's the best of both worlds - this EVF does way more than the Sony built in EVF; I can remove it when I don't want to use it. False colors, multiple zoom modes, underexposed/overexposed areas, crop marks, more peaking choices, etc. Weighs less than a pound and I can pull it off to shoot sports; it attaches to the shoe so no, I don't need to remove it. I would take exception to your use of the word "extreme" sports. The A7x can't shoot regular sports without any native long glass or good focusing in low / mixed lighting. I hate shooting action with an EVF. But hey, for non-moving objects it's a great camera - if you don't have a client pissed when it overheats and shuts down. Nothing is as clumsy as that. To each his own I guess.

    Weird lenses

I have no images to back up this claim, but a quick google search will show you the Mir 1B could be exactly what you're looking for. I think vintagelensesforvideo.com may have a review of it. Here's the link to the review. Scroll down to the 2nd and 3rd video to see the amazing flares this lens offers, plus the lens was designed with a declicked aperture, so it could be perfect for what you're looking for. http://www.vintagelensesforvideo.com/mir-1/

  15. I love my $1400 nx1 but it would Def feel naked without the 16-50 S lens which adds 1200 to the price.

  16. To modify a saying a bit, "If you don't already know what a BMPCC costs (in equipment and time) you can't afford it." Seriously, BMPCC is only for people who have stretched the limits of compressed video and are willing to make VERY significant trade-offs. I would cross the NX1 off the list because the platform is new. Therefore, I think you should choose between GH4 and A6000/A5100.

  17. Total budget is only US$2k? Exactly how much is that meant to cover.... ?? If you're starting from scratch you should set your eyes far lower than any of those cameras which you mentioned in your subject line (except perhaps the A6000, some amazing bargains can be found with the A6000. Or even go with the A5100). Example how it can all add up once you start pricing it out properly: http://ironfilm.co.nz/a-priced-out-gear-kit-for-a-newbie-to-filmmaking-using-the-panasonic-gh2/

  18. If you can, wait for the A6100/A7000. With the recent aggressive moves from Sony, only a similar APS-C camera is missing from them (4K, HFR, S-LOG, XAVCS? Perhaps even in-body stabilization?). The GX8 and E-M5II weren't it for me personally and the GH5 is still far away. The BMPCC is awesome, but unless you need the flat footage and look it isn't as flexible in other areas (crop, framerates, etc). The GH4 is still awesome of course, first thing next month we'll know more about VLOG rolling out. The NX1 is very impressive, but I'm not a fan of the mount/native offering. Wouldn't go with the A7II personally. It's not really for video production. The A6000 seems a great option, but like I said, I'm pretty sure in autumn they'll announce the A6100/A7000, which might be their video central APS-C mirrorless go-to cam. In your hands when Christmas comes around? If you don't see the point in waiting and want to create already, you can't really go wrong with any camera out there already. I'd say though, the GH4 still holds decent cards.

  21. One of my favorite 35mm (film) rangefinders is the Olympus 35SP which is a fixed lens Zuiko 42mm 1.7, which has a Super 35 cine equivalent of 28mm. So if you want to take some Super 35 @ 28mm "cine" film photos for reference, get an Olympus 35SP and buy some hand rolled ECN-2 film.

  22. I have both cameras, A7s with ShoGun and now A7r2. Obviously 1080p on A7s is not as detailed as 4k on A7r2. the A7r2 is a much more practical package the a7s with ShoGun. If you are mainly in one location, the external recorder works, but moving around and taking shorter clips, its a hassle. And with FE lenses, you get better stabilisation then with Canon lenses mounted on A7r2. I use the 24-70 if I want to be compact, but my new favourite is the FE 28-135. You will then have a video range from 28 to 200mm by using FF and S35. And found out it also take very good still images ! Even for video I would pick A7r2 today over A7s (only better for high ISO), however I guess A7s2 will be even better for video (maybe higher frame rates). But if you want to shoot stills as well - no doubt a7r2 !!! you can look at 4k video here : https://youtu.be/PbyDqby-oqY and some stills here : https://asmundma.smugmug.com/Photography/A7r2-test/i-qHfjcfB/A

(only for Auto MIC Control OFF)Overall fixed minor bugsOf note from my experiences tonight - I had the DIS enabled just for the hell of it - turning this ON will make 1080p120 unavailable in the video menu. Took me a minute to figure this out as I was shooting with a dumb adapter + Canon EF glass.

  25. Ha! just watched that yesterday and the making of vid. Shot on Gopro with a mini gimbal. Technology has come so far. 20 years ago when I was around 16 I saved up for a couple years, reading Videomaker magazine all the while, (no internet for me yet) and then based on their reviews bought the first consumer mini DV camera to come out, (Grdv1 I believe) plus a wide and tele converter and edited with 2 vhs decks and a jog dial. Crazy how much has changed! Makes me wonder what another 20 years will bring. (apology for off topic reminiscing)

  26. FWIW, I shot a small project for a friend yesterday. No budget and a favor. Since the stakes were pretty low and everything was casual, I shot it with the EM5II and an old manual 55mm Canon f1.2 FD lens ($200ebay). The lens was mounted on the cheap Chinese speed booster ($100eBay). Love the old glass so far. Really like the renderings I get from it. And it's radioactive! So that's cool. Anyway, 95% is the EM5II handheld and that FD lens, with a few random shots from a 5D. Here it be @720 for your discriminating consideration. I feel like I'm getting good value out of the speed booster old lens combo:

  27. Tested this today (despite the bickering here) and found that I got 29m - hit record again, got 10 minutes more before the recording just stopped and the camera shut down. No data lost. But for live gigs that would like to shoot at 4k... this is a deal breaker. Really bummed out.

  28. That's the best looking example I have seen so far. It's interesting that some sort of inbuilt stabilisation is on Samsung's radar an implemented in a FW update. I hope the NX2 goes the whole way with 5 axis IBIS. That would be a big plus !!

  29. I want to 2nd what Dahlfors said. I have photos on an old WD Worldbook. It failed, and because the card has proprietary encryption whatever, I was about to buy an old unit to try swapping the circuitry out when someone on the Internet said I could snip the diode and it would work again (not something you'll obviously do!). Electronics die over time. I was lucky. That's why I strongly advocate having a few backups. HEAT is the enemy of ALL THINGS ELECTRONIC. Put a fan on it if you aren't in a cooled atmosphere. Also, make sure you have good surge protection, etc.

  30. Yes. Very comfortable on boards when I was younger, but late 30's now and it had been at least 8 years since I last skated. Although, both my wife and a first time skater also hopped on and within a few minutes got the hang of it. The board has 3 or 4 settings that limit take off and top speed This helped us get comfortable before maxing out the speed. I think I will have to order the mini segway and give it a go to see which works better for video use.

  31. You keep posting about the resale value of a camera you don't even own, why do you care so much about the depreciation of someone else's camera?
    1 point
  32. Thank you for the kind words! Another possible solution is to take a cast of the original front housing, and a cast of a female thread (on my case (58mm), then combine them into one mold. Then cast those in something like brass or rigid polyurethane. Then cut & combine them so one end is a perfect fit for the anamorphic and the other end is a perfect fit for the helicoid. Brass would be ideal but polyurethane is more within my budget. For under $100 I should be able to attempt several casts. Thanks for posting the pics of your B&H's. I'm optimistic the dual clamp rings of the Antares finderscope bracket provide the stability you need. I should be able to verify in a few days. I'll also let you know what I find out from the 3D printer. Cheers, |. . | .|

Is it just me or does anyone els feels like the "bouncing" feel is a dealbreaker ? This motion that goes up & down while you walk is kind of really weird and unnatural :/

  34. Those that think the heat issue is nothing to be concerned about will learn a hard lesson when it comes time to resale this camera. Especially if the new model is free of this defect.

  35. I'm sorry but the solution of having two bodies is a copout. Before I buy two A7Rii, I think I would just by one FS7 and be done with it. Truth is I really wanted to like this camera, but for $3200, the overheat issue is unacceptable. Heck for any price the overheat issue is unacceptable. Can we all just stop tiptoeing around this thing and call it what it really is? The word is DEFECTIVE! There I've said it, the Sony A7Rii is DEFECTIVE. Don't give them a pass on this. It is UNACCEPTABLE. Name one other product in your possession that this would be OK for? Your car? Your computer? Your phone? This camera is DEFECTIVE, and frankly, a recall is in order.

  37. That f-stop isn't T-stop? Personally, I just use what is needed. And hardly will I reframe something and then not check the metering/settings. And I don't do zoom-ins/-outs. So indeed I also feel it isn't much of a biggie.
