  1. Here's what I think. I think the quest to make everything tiny is making for too many compromises. I'd rather lug around a bigger camera that does what I want without fuss.

From what I've heard the cameras used were prototype test units. Panasonic never released a beta firmware with V-Log. Also, there seems to be the assumption that if a feature can be added in firmware then it should be, as there is really no cost involved. The developers writing the code to add the new features do not work for free. So there is certainly a cost involved, but that's OK so long as it's not the consumer footing the bill right? Software features cost the manufacturer money. It's not a freebee. Makes sense to add it in a new model. Few and I do mean few companies will throw in major new features for free. There are exceptions... Samsung, please stand up.

  6. Comparing MLraw to compressed video colors is ridiculous because it has nothing to do with what canon gives you but what raw gives you.

  7. I've heard the rolling shutter is terrible in 4K mode. The sensor has a crop factor of 0,8x compared to fullframe. The fastest Leica S lenses are f/2.5. In terms of DOF, any fullframe camera can give you the same DOF with f/2 lenses... I really can't see what's special about that sample clip uploaded in 720p. Could've been shot with a Canon 550D, some good lenses and the help of a good colourist.

  11. So It's been a few weeks since I've got my panasonic g6, I really love all the features of this camera like 50p, touchscreen, peaking, evf, tons od detail, almost no moire and aliasing and I think it's a huge upgrade over my past canon cameras ( I had a t2i and a 5d2 over the past years) but I still regret my purchase. Maybe it's just because I'm new to this camera but I cannot achive the same feel that I had with my t2i, mostly I can't get the righ colors, everything looks more "digital" and also pdc it's a pain with my cheap f/1.8 - f/2.8 glasses... I also have an old 5d (the first model) for shooting stills and I'm really tempted to sell it and buy something like a 7d just to have the ability to shoot canon like video, It's a really strange feeling because I started hating canon recently and that's why I jumped on the g6 :/ am I the only one?

  13. when sensor size is only a little bigger than full fraaem, I'd be inclined (forced due to not being able to afford the leica) to go full frame and an otus 85mm instead of this and the 100/2.

  14. If your just starting out, movie studio 13 platinum can do basic edits on 4k without proxies on my four year old computer, i7-860 2.8ghz, radeon hd 5770 with its gpu acceleration. Premiere elements 13 can't cause of lack of gpu/accel. I own both now. This is forty less then anywhere else I found for the suite. Don't know how long it will last. Use the key with the download from Sony for the latest version. http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00I3O2QFM/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?qid=1440868691&sr=8-1&pi=SY200_QL40&keywords=sony+movie+studio+13+suite&dpPl=1&dpID=518qHvDO-AL&ref=plSrch Gh4 4k, don't know about nx1 or others. Stabilizing is 2.5x 1080p & 15x 4k clip length, note crashes on stabilizing some 4k clips. 1080p stabilizing is faster than the premiere pro trial on my system. I set playback to preview, one quarter and its relativity smooth with some skips, not perfect though. Has support for external monitor

  15. the technique seems to hate fast camera motion since with camera movement everything is moving, whereas, with locked down shots, the static objects are sharp, and the moving ones have a blur trail. you might wanna try 1/8th of a second for handheld, then only speed up by 300%.

  16. Hey, I love this project! I have the exact same lens and hadn´t heard about the front modification, seems really interesting! This is a bit of my experience with this lens and anamorphic in general. I have a pretty special grandpa that managed to build me an adapter made of methacrylate that fits the back of the Bell&Howell and converts it to a normal m49 filter thread. Pretty absurd, but it works. On the front I attached a 77 diameter diopter directly to the mattebox, and voilà, ready to shoot. Did a couple of test shoots with my GH2 and then I shot a short documentary with this on the A7s with a Jupiter 9, and it didn´t vignette at all, even though it´s full frame, so nice. Although it´s a nightmare to shoot with, I dropped the filters a couple of times, I had to constantly do the double focus, a pain in the ass, but managed to finish it and looks good. I really love the look of this lens, and I agree that it flares more nicely when paired with a vintage lens like the Helios or the Jupiter. Also, as a bit of an accident, I discovered that the methacrylate leaked light inside the lens and created a rather unusual white vignette that´s very unique and I actually ended up liking it and not fixing it in post. It´s always nice to try stupid ideas, you may end up using them. xD You can see some shots below. The setup was: A7s + Jupiter 9 85 f2 + Bell&Howell Anamorphic + Diopter Oh! And be careful with mounting the lens, I destroyed my m42 to NEX adapter. Too much weight, should have bought a clamp. I´ll follow the thread and see where this goes, maybe mod my lens too.

  19. i did the exact same thing when the g6 came out. same experience, same reaction... i told myself that i was just brainwashed by canon raw color because im so used to it.... thats nonsense. this is the color i want https://vimeo.com/groups/magiclanterncanon5diii who can beat that? if you click thru the thumbnails of the videos in that group without even watching them you can STILL tell that the color is amazing~! i expect canon to eventually release a 5d4c type of "video centric" slr, and it wont be cheap ($4-$5k?), and ill buy it. ill just pull out my credit card. ive stopped fighting it

I think that, if they want to continue the little "revolution" they made in 2014 - offering all the features that Canon's user wanted (4K, 60p, peaking etc...) at a fraction of the price of a 5DmkIII - it could be a smart move to sell the new GH4 with the new firmware preloaded as "R" and to offer the update to existing user for a symbolic price, in the 50-100$ ballpark. In that way they could confirm their intentions to listen users while Canon still sleeps in 2009 and they could try to take aboard some BlackMagic user like me: I do love the ProRes HQ from my Pocket, but using it is really annoying, so I use GH4 95% of the time because it is so simple and fast to work with. I'm sure this could give them more exposure then spending a lot in advertising.

  21. on the BM cameras ISO has no effect on the raw data. ISO is only stored as metadata but underlying data is the same. It only matters in prores.

  22. RX10 II works with it, but it's pretty limited (same goes for the A7RII probably). E.g. you cant't shoot video using a Picture Profile. I've told them in January when I got the A7s, but naturally nothing has happened since then. If more people requested this feature perhaps this would be implemented. It's a real shame, too, because the app has the best image of all the remote apps I've tried.
    1 point
  23. Seems like I cannot apply that to my g6 footage due to the inability of my panasonic to play with advanced picture profiles, thank you anyway! Totally agree, I love the g6 and I'm not gonna sell it, I can't go back completely, I really can't stand the aliasing of canon cameras for example. I'll try your setting, right now I'm testing standard with -2-2-2-2 I'll try that, thank you!

I really don't think that's the case. it's much more likely that GH4R just means V-Log is pre-installed. And I'm sure the pricing will reflect that too.

  26. Received my color checker a while go, but just got a chance to audition it. and well, I wish I'd sprung for one of these sooner. Now I get the skintones I prefer from the GH4's Natural profile and can quickly balance the image before grading it. I'm thinking I should just permanently mount the color chart to the slate during production. Here's a sample. Uncorrected frame followed by the instantly balanced version using the color checker grid. I did no other adjustments. GH4, SLR Magic 25mm @T/2.8, Kowa Bell & Howell, Rectilux 3FF-W, Hoya ProND 4. ISO 200, Natural, Contrat 0, Sharpness -5, NR -5, Saturation -2, Tint 0.

  27. So now I have to use a Shogun + a7rii, plus buy SSDs / Metabones adapter / multiple batteries for both / a grip probably to add some heft? Now we're at over 6k and you've built something that still cannot shoot sports and is larger to carry around than the 1dc + this Kinotehnik LCDVFE. I don't care about video AF; if I do I grab the Samsung NX1. The A7x models don't exactly AF well in video as you well know. Unless it's something as smooth as a 70d I wouldn't tout that as a feature of the a7x series. Regarding the LCDVFE - It will display underexposed areas as well, allow you to customize what's on the screen, 4 custom modes, 4 separate zoom modes, display in all blue as well as false color, allow you to control it with an external USB controller, has a proper eyepiece/loupe that blocks out all the glare, and the top folds down to double as a small monitor. I've had the a7s and this EVF is light years better. The Shogun is nice but hard to see in bright light, very large and has limited battery life. Or so I've read. What do I know - I've never owned one. No camera is perfect - I would like better high speed framerates with the 1dc - hell I'd take 4k 30 - the difference I think between us is I shoot quite a bit of kids running around playing sports and need the native long lens reach and superior AF tracking that the 1d(x) system provides. I don't see the 2.8 zooms being available yet in FE mount, nor any long glass, and shooting indoor basketball and gymnastics would drive me crazy if it didn't work properly in mixed lighting. I simply love the dynamic range of the Sony cameras and Canon would do well designing some newer sensors for their cameras. One thing that drove me batty was not having the custom modes on the a7s save the APS-C setting. If you create a custom mode 1 with FF and a #2 with APS-C on, will it remember it now? If not can you at least assign it to a button at least?

Could it have some of the GX8 tech, though? Don't see the point of bringing out a new camera package if it's just a firmware thing... they've been handing out V-LOG firmware for GH4 users to test already, so that should already work, no need to bring it out as a new camera unless there's some actual change in hardware, I'd say.

  30. I'm with you guys. Not really blown away either. I know it's Leica and it's expensive, but that doesn't justify getting a wow from me. They've put a whole shooting team on that and that's what the best you can get out of the camera? Not so sure then... yeah, you get nice sharp subjects against a creamy flowy backdrop, but other than that there's hardly more charm to that footage than something RAW shot with a 5DmkIII or so.
    1 point
  31. OK, I don't get it. Looks soft, contrasty, and over-saturated. Sadly, even the models look like addicts, usually they make up for the footage. Those of you wowed by this, could you explain in specific terms what you liked? I mean specific terms, not generic stuff like "pleasing," "filmic," or "natural."
    1 point
  32. I'm not so sure about that. I just think they're not willing to be on the cutting edge of video specs, because they can't really devote serious resources and development to it. However, they can adopt the technology a little bit behind the curve. They seem about 2.5 years behind. So, eventually, they'll get there. Now, if your thing is to have the bestest and coolest video IQ from a consumer stills cam, then you'll always be drawn to those models offering it. I, however, tend to think that even median video IQ from 2015 cameras looks "good enough" already. If you're a competent shooter, you can make most cameras work for you. Here's an example: Last week I did a quick documentary style corporate shoot for 20K. I hired a guy that I know likes to trick out his GH4 and likes to run around with a bunch of grip stuff. Now, I did that not because I knew he was going to get wonderful footage, (I know his capabilities and that was expected anyway) but I needed him there so the set looked "professional." And it did. Big lens, matte box, c-stands, silks, reflectors, dead cats, audio harnesses, etc. Okay. So that put the client at ease. Their money was on display. Meanwhile, while he was doing all the A-Cam interview stuff and some misc B-roll, I was running around with a little EM5II grabbing shots non-stop. In the end, over 90% of the b-roll shots in the final edit are from the EM5II. Final delivery is for the web @720. Unless you're super-discriminating, you can't tell the difference in the edit between the EM5II footage and the GH4 footage. As a casual viewer you're just not really going to see it. So this is how I view the whole camera IQ debate. What I can do practically matters. I think I've come to terms with the fact that many people will always chase the technical holy grail with IQ, but my focus with many of my jobs (and my philosophy on how to approach those jobs) lies elsewhere. And let's not loose sight of the fact that in 5-7 years we're all going to have robust DR, great low light capability, and 4K. Sure, there will ALWAYS be superior IQ devices, but even if you have that capability, what are you going to do with it? I DO get excited to shoot with awesome cameras, love being blown away with great images when I rent pro camera gear, and I know they are an absolute necessity for certain productions. But not for all. Not for your cat videos --or cityscape videos set to emo music. At a certain point when are we all just arguing how many angels can dance on the head of a pin? I mean, even this lowly Oly camera has better IQ than the greatest auteurs of the mid 20th century had access to during most of their careers, so I say the tools are great and wonderful, just go use them effectively and you'll be happy. Finally, as a camera manufacturer, nobody can outdo Fuji when it comes to offering lousy video in their stills cams. They set the bar so low that it's unacceptable even for me!

  35. Xavc-s is essentially the same h264 codec that's used in most other cameras. It's really not even close to the 10 bit prores of the bmpcc Btw one thing I didn't mention earlier is that the bmpcc's dynamic range is only significantly better in RAW. ProRes is much more prone to blown highlights. I believe with the right picture profile you might get the same dynamic range on the a6000 as you would with the bmpcc in prores. But even so, there is something special about the blackmagic image. So if you have the time to work with it then I say go with it!

  36. Sony allow as slow as 1/4sec at any frame rate. shooting at 25p and 1/5th sec then speeding it up by 500% gives beautiful low light results for timelapse type stuff. with the motion blur which is very pleasing for thing slike cars in the dark. https://vimeo.com/52579247

    The Diopter Thread.

I found the cheapest way to get a 72mm +0.5 diopter filter lens, which is less than $20. Bought a Tamron Close Up Adapter for 28-200mm Lens and a 72mm uv filter, $0.99--the cheapest one. Through out the UV filter's glass and replace with the Tamron glass, which is easy to take apart. Their size fits perfectly.

  38. Owning an F3 and BMPCC (the big and mini combo of high performance 1080 cameras) is going a long way towards reducing the crippling GAS I suffer from! Had a rather weird day today (DoP was no show!!!), but I was shooting with the PMW-F3 and damn I was really liking the look of some of those shots! But even so... I still get tempted badly due to my case of GAS :-/ Purchased a Panasonic G6 a few days ago. And got very very tempted today to get a Sony RX100 mk1.... (US$260 is hard to resist!).
