Nearly identical, actually. The biggest difference is in depth, due to the GH4's deeper, more comfortable grip. http://camerasize.com/compare/#381,624 That's an outright lie. The Blackmagic cameras use active thermoelectric cooling to keep their sensors at peak performance and prevent stopping for cool-downs. In fact, this is one of the reasons they're such battery hogs--that cooling system sucks a ton of juice. Clearly a smart engineering decision, since neither camera has heat management issues. That stabilization sucks compared to Olympus'--and even most lens-based stabilizers--anyway. Those cameras are also less than half the price of the A7R II. The E-M5 II has a 2.7mm increase in width, 3.9mm decrease in depth from the original. Clearly the articulating screen isn't adding bulk. No, we're criticizing them because they can't match their competitors in basic areas, like bit depth, heat management, AF performance, battery life, stills compression, color science, IS performance, and general ergonomics. Last time I checked, falling behind your competitors was a valid reason to criticize a company. It's not my job to think about the physics of it. It's theirs. And if they can't think about it long enough to come up with solutions instead of ways to buff their spec sheets, they're going to get this reaction next time, too. Yes, we are complaining that the headline feature of the camera (4K internal) craps out in 15 minutes. Too bad they didn't manage to pack in a proper heatsink, an intuitive UI, or a battery that lasts more than an hour and a half.3 points

I hope there is not a huge backlash about this, software costs money and it is amazing to see a company greatly improve what is a relativity old camera.2 points

Shooting anamorphic for the first time? (help please!)
Zak Forsman and one other reacted to richg101 for a topic
Unfortunately I think you might do well to look at high quality flare overlays rather than risk shooting anamorphic last minute. Unless you can budget for a nice and clean 35mm lomo squarefront and the required rigging. There are not really any offerings apart from the SLR magic that flare similarly. On the flip side, and i don;t like plugging dso here personally, but I would actually suggest a trump58 and trump38 in combination with a speed booster. a few nifty oval apertures, with the intention of overlaying the horizontal flares in post. password= trump Being in the UK, I could rent you a TRUMP body and attachments for a few days...2 points -

I would shoot spherical and apply all that flares in AE. You can achive this look much easier with videocopilot stuff or similar... And if it has to be anamorphic - maybe the adapter from SLR magic is the one to go with as it produces blue flares and looks modern/"artificial" or clinic and is just easy to use I think.2 points -
Rectilux Core DNA - non-rotating single-focus attachment for anamorphic lenses
Zak Forsman reacted to richg101 for a topic
for a 2.40;1 delivery (ie, cropped sides of a 16:9 sensr)... ff38 and ff88 attachments will support taking lenses as wide as 50mm on full frame 16:9 so will do 35mm lenses on aps-c and 25mm lenses on gh4, or maybe as wide as 21mm lenses on gh4 4k mode. from this, I'd imagine with a kowa between the taking lens and the ff38 or ff88 you'll be needing a 100mm on full frame, a 70-80mm on aps-c and a 50mm on gh4 (45mm on gh4 crop mode). multiply your focal length by 0.66x for the FF38 and 1.55x for the FF88. FF38 has a clear aperture on the rear element of 36mm meaning transmission and aperture should be ok for 2x anamorphic f2.8 on full frame, f2 on aps=c and f1.4 on gh4, The whole optical pathway becomes ridiculously long however. There may be a possibility of a run of FF38's 'scaled up' to 50-60mm rear elements and an associated wider fov, but would be extremely expensive - but very similar to the custom lens Kubrick had made for his zeiss 50/0.7. As it happens, the FF38 was influenced by the WA design kubrick had!1 point -

You need to cool down. Customer service folks are doing their job and being friendly when a lot of people might not be. They don't make Panasonic's decisions. Just be happy the firmware is being released and is reasonable for people to afford. Peace1 point -

Its an amazing frame grab! The original must be good enough to be used as a picture, im sure. Its funny to see the "specialists" thinking that the banding in the bokeh areas are from the original video. Not even a cheap cellphone creates that much artifacts. But hey, thats the internet. People can only see the bad things! I would love to see some videos shot by those guys. I bet that they are perfect. To the OP - Thats a beatiful looking image. The bokeh is also very smooth. Make sure to post a video next time. I bet it looks nice too!1 point -
Almost! I wanted something for 4K that was a little bit more like the 5" Ninja Blade. But then again... there's the PIX-E5(H) which right now might just be the capturing monitor of the hour. Would've been nice to see these other companies (Atomos, Convergent Design and Blackmagic) following up on their lead though.1 point

I used Paypal. Maybe they just use that email address. I didn't get a confirmation though.1 point -
@myJTP I would not wait on Canon for anything Those guys are not really addressing the 4k market at all and I bet its still a while before any 4k dslr at all. They will not put in a dslr before the C100 mark II and that is not even a year old yet. I think get a gh4 is a huge vaule for what it offers and then add vlog to that... damn this is monster of a camera for under 1500 bucks with vlog or get one used and its even cheaper.1 point

Was about to purchase vlog from US and thought easier to purchase from Panasonic UK. Sounded sensible way to go or so I thought. Phoned Panasonic UK to order and quess what, they know nothing about all this vlog news or what vlog was never mind the GH4R which they didnt know about either. They were not interested in my queery at all and probably thought I was a crank until I mentioned I would post what they had said on the internet, then they got interested lol So after much apologising they said they would get back to me. Going to go ahead and purchase from US site for an easy life.1 point

Shooting anamorphic for the first time? (help please!)
Oliver Daniel reacted to Bioskop.Inc for a topic
Have you thought about hiring a proper anamorphic for the day? Worth checking out rental places to see if budget will stretch? These 5 pages of flare tests is a good resource: https://vimeo.com/mkcine/videos/page:1/sort:date Most vintage Russain lenses flare really well, just off the charts - but you've got the 2 really good ones. The other Russain lens that is worth getting is the Helios 40-2 85mm f1.5; swirly bokeh like you've never seen & when stopped down has this star-like bokeh - if you like photography as well, its a must have lens. They sell brand new versions now, so you know you're getting a mint version (£200-300). Just Google "Helios 40-2 Bokeh" & you'll see what i mean. If memory serves well, the Super-Takumars (is that what you meant by Ashai Pentax?) flare pretty nicely (not the SMC versions) with or without anamorphic attachments - 55mm f1.8 is always worth a pop (cheaper than the f1.4 version & just as good). Meyer-Optik Gorlitz Trioplan (silver version) 100mm f2.8 - produces soap bubble bokeh, crazy shit! Really expensive ATM, if you can find one, but there is a Kickstarter campaign to start making them again: http://petapixel.com/2015/07/10/trioplan-100mm-f2-8-rebirth-will-bring-soap-bubble-bokeh-to-modern-cameras/1 point -
Shooting anamorphic for the first time? (help please!)
Oliver Daniel reacted to Bioskop.Inc for a topic
There are various solutions: - If you want to shoot anamorphic & get those blue flares on a budget, then pick up a cheap Singer 16D (think they are also branded as Sankor). It is dual focus, but you can work around that quite easily. If you couple it with a very flare driven taking lens, then you'll get the whole bundle of anamorphic flares, taking lens flares etc... It also has a very large rear element, so you can use with more lenses. Cost is about £150-ish (think there's one on ebay from UK ATM). If not you could rent/buy a Blue Streak filter (they come in different streak sizes) & once put on a flare driven spherical lens, you'll get everything. Or you just use a Flare driven taking lens & add the streaks in post. Check this vid out at about the 0.50 for the blue flares from the Singer 16D (not mine, just found it).1 point -

The Trump looks great! I would love to test this on day on some old super 8 stock I still have in the fridge. Is the Trump 38 on MIR 38 basis? The Helios is very long for S8.1 point -
I has said $99 seems reasonable. I also hope they allow the VLog for the GX8, the G7 and the LX100.1 point

Help choosing a camera for doc and short films...
TheRenaissanceMan reacted to fuzzynormal for a topic
Yes, once I figured out the best way to utilize it. It's useful in some regards. Still, I can pull focus manually with my eye on the EFV and with focus peaking off, which is how I prefer to shoot.1 point -
Just don't! a) why reward a company which has had such a terrible attitude to their consumers for filmmaking? Canon more or less accidentally stumbled into this niche, then ignored the HDSLR enthusiasts b) invest in Nikon F Mount lenses instead which will leave you with greater flexibility of choices and cheaper adapters As for cameras, what kind of documentary films and what kind of short films? And which of the two are more important to you? (As they can have conflicting needs) Also, what is your background coming into this? For instance a BMPCC or Samsung NX1 are both absolutely FANTASTIC cameras, arguably each the best in class for their niche. Yet at the same time.... they're not really for everybody, especially if they're new to this. While a Panasonic GH4 / G7 or Sony RX10mk2 or Sony X70 / AX100 could be far better more general purpose choices.1 point

Good job Only thing is I would avoid shooting into the sun with the filter on. Bit of a hassle I know but it causes all the detail in the shadows to go away What picture settings did you use btw? Also I've decided finally that Im going to get this camera!1 point

Thanks. I went back to square one after having quite a few unsuccessful attempts and remembered and old video from me, which i really liked: Recipe is as follows: Standard with -5,-5,-5,-5 Highlight / Shadow 0,0 Iso was Auto, but i guess it was 200-400 Tiffen Ultra Contrast 3 Filter FilmConvert with GH4 Profile, FJ SuperX 400 emulation was used with 30% grain Some slight adjustment in the shadows to give it more contrast, thats it. Works out of the box on the GM1 and seems to work out of the box on the LX100. Will put up some small demo video later.1 point

Yet Blackmagic can do 10bit for a quarter of the price of an A7R II with the Pocket Cinema Camera and Micro. Yet GH4 has 10bit 4K HDMI output, albeit seemingly unable to make much noticeable difference to image quality. So I'm not really too appreciative of Sony's excuses. JG is right, they left it out on purpose to segment products. They are free to do that, so just tell us. Don't make silly excuses! As for a GH4 style flip screen making the body too thick - that's a load of tosh. The E-M5 II has one and is a slimmer body with weather sealing. GH4 is not really bigger, not in any meaningful way. Flip screen for selfies is important to consumer market and A7R II is a consumer camera so I hope they change this in future.1 point
