An interesting post from Illya Freedman For the record, 8-Bits can absolutely be enough for log space. What matters most is the quality of your bits, and what you attempt to make those bits do. Here's the thing, and this is absolutely something you won't hear from anyone else, V-Log-L on the GH4 is not the last significant update for the GH4! There's about 3x people outside of Panasonic that actually knows how much power is lurking under that hood. I have no idea if future updates will be contingent on this upgrade, but this camera is already producing more apparent resolution that several top end cameras made just for cinema. I projected a scientific test on a Christie 4K projector on a 25' screen in February 2014 which proved this. Now with V-Log-L, the humble GH4 just overtook the DR of several "professional" cameras costing many thousands more.3 points

GH4 V-Log $99
Zak Forsman and one other reacted to Mat Mayer for a topic
I thought the V Log talk on Facebook and other places was annoying before. Jesus H Christ; it is now ridonkulous. I have had to unfollow all the GH4 Facebook groups because of people non stop complaining and asking stupid questions about it. What a giddy bunch of camera geeks Just wait until it is released where you live. $99 is fair. If they don't sell it in Thailand for my UK model tough luck on them, I will just pop over to that free place garrrr (that's gaarrrr like a pirate would say).2 points -
I just noticed, that the JVC is planning on bringing a lot of features via a new firmware update, which will only further improve the features on the camera: http://pro.jvc.com/prof/attributes/features.jsp?model_id=MDL1023182 points

Tamron announced 2 new FF lenses for Canon / Nikon / Sony A: The SP35mm F/1.8 VC USD and the SP45mm F/1.8 VC USD. Info and samples here: http://tamron-new-sp.eu/#/ So, why game changers? First world FF 50mm equivalent to be stabilized, a game changer for video. Concerning the 35mm, it is a first for Nikon too. Only Canon has a 35mm IS but slower. World shortest MFD for the same focal length: 0.2m (7.9 in) for the 35mm, (0.4x magnification, almost like a macro. For eg, the 100mm Zeiss Makro Plannar is 0.5x). This is huge in photo & video and super nice to have on a 35mm (for creativity and new perspective)First reviews are mind blowing (bokeh & sharpness). Sharpness is apparently on Sigma Art level.Cost is reasonable: 600USD. Considering stabilization and optical quality, I am fine with the price. First reviews are mind blowing (bokeh & sharpness). Sharpness is apparently on Sigma Art level. Look at the samples above... Bokeh and detail wide open look promising. Your thoughts?1 point

arellaTV reacted to TheRenaissanceMan for a topic
It's just a measure of how much highlight DR is preserved by the camera's REC709-compliant gamma curve. Remember, a stop is a doubling of light. So 800% puts you between 4 and 5 stops over middle gray.1 point -
I believe that means 12 stops of Dynamic Range. Also pushing the Bitrate substantially higher to help preserve details better, noy to mention easier for post work.1 point

The GH4 is much deeper and heftier (having used both cameras), doesn't have room taken up inside its body for IBIS, and it's sensor is less than half the size. If the Sony A7rII had a 4/3" sensor, I'm sure it would be a lot easier to implement more features - or at least keep it from overheating at 4k. I actually don't care about what it technically has or doesn't have. I've used all the cameras mentioned here, and I can tell you that the Blackmagic is the worst of all of them for overheating. I was forced to attempt to shoot a doco with the pocket as production wouldn't spring for anything else, and we needed a number of cameras. Apart from it being the totally wrong form factor for shooting when not on a tripod... The thing would heat up insanely. So it is marginally bigger. I still don't really get this one - Sony made a design decision based on how big they want their screen to be, where they want it, and decided they didn't want even a small amount of extra bulk, or alternately even a small reduction in screen size. I just don't understand how this is a 'big problem'. The screen tilts instead of flipping out - if that feature is THE killer feature you need to have, then this camera isn't for you..? Except that's an amalgamation of features from a number of different camera companies. There isn't a single camera in even a similar price range that offers 10-bit 4k HDMI out, internal 4k 8-bit 4:2:0, Dual-pixel AF, super battery life, uncompressed raw stills, colour science as good as Canon (another thing I don't understand), on-sensor stabilisation as good as an Olympus and the ergonomics of a GH4 - all with a full frame sensor. You can say 'I wish the IBIS was as good as Olympus,' you can say 'I wish the colour science was as great as Canon,' you can say 'I wish the battery life was better,' you can say 'I wish it had 10-bit.' You can say all those things seperately. You can't say 'this camera is awful/nowhere near as good as it could be because Canon has better colour science, better AF, and better battery life, Olympus has better IBIS, the GH4 has 4k that doesn't overheat and the Blackmagic has internal 10-bit ProRes, so why is it that the Sony doesn't have every single one of these features??' Especially when most of the cameras you're talking about have sensors that are less than half the size, in bodies that are just as big, if not bigger than that of the a7rII (with the exception of the Blackmagic - but again, its battery life is awful, heats up a lot, its sensor is tiny and it doesn't do 4k). Are you seriously suggesting that there shouldn't be a camera on the market at the moment because none of them are perfect? Therefore, if a camera isn't perfect (or at least perfect to your specifications), then there's no point in making any cameras until it's physically possible to do so? Or are you suggesting that Sony should make a camera that fulfills all your expectations and specifications, but is a big black box that doesn't have vast market appeal because it's ugly, big and heavy...? It's funny how some people forget that camera manufacturers aren't making cameras specifically for YOU I just looked on the Sony store website and the major features listed before internal 4k were: -42.4 megapixel backlit sensor (keep in mind that the Sony website lists this as 'Digital E-mount 42.4 Mega Pixel Camera Body' rather than '4k internal Camera body') -Fast Hybrid AF system with 399-point wide focal plane phase-detection AF coverage for sharp focus -5-axis image stabilisation reduces blur for stills and movies - making every shot crystal clear -Experience high sensitivity of up to ISO 102400*3 with low-noise performance and wide dynamic range EVen on the Sony Digital Imagine global website, it lists these before internal 4k: -New back-illuminated full-frame CMOS sensor -High-speed BIONZ XTMimage processing engine -All FE lenses maximize resolution I appreciate for you that the headline feature may be internal 4k, but for Sony, it's big feature #5 in a long list. It's not all that long ago that Canon cameras crapped out in the same way simply recording HD. My T2i which was bought for the sole purpose of shooting video would overheat pretty easily. In certain conditions, it would start overheating before it reached it's 12 minute limit, especially if it had been on for a little while. That's HD! And everyone praised Canon for how great they were, and how great the video was, and how the overheating and time limit was annoying, but you could work around it and it was worth working around. Now Sony brings out internal 4k with incredible quality, Slog in XAVC-s, coupled with everything else that this camera offers and it's some sort of travesty because under certain conditions, the camera sometimes overheats when shooting 4k. Please. Not that long ago, many people including myself were suggesting it was going to be unlikely that Sony would even have internal 4k in the first place in this camera. If it's really that much of a killer, wait til the A7sII1 point

So just in case anybody was wondering. I just tried to order the V-log from the Panasonic website. I chatted with a representative and the lady said that the VLOG update can be bought and applied to GH4s even if they were bought from outside the United States. HOWEVER, you cannot buy the VLOG from overseas, even if you have a US mailing address and credit card. The website does not allow purchases made from overseas at all. Here's the transcript of my whole chat. Jessica: Hello! I am a Panasonic Product Specialist. Almost! I wanted something for 4K that was a little bit more like the 5" Ninja Blade. But then again... there's the PIX-E5(H) which right now might just be the capturing monitor of the hour. Would've been nice to see these other companies (Atomos, Convergent Design and Blackmagic) following up on their lead though.1 point

@myJTP I would not wait on Canon for anything Those guys are not really addressing the 4k market at all and I bet its still a while before any 4k dslr at all. They will not put in a dslr before the C100 mark II and that is not even a year old yet. I think get a gh4 is a huge vaule for what it offers and then add vlog to that... damn this is monster of a camera for under 1500 bucks with vlog or get one used and its even cheaper.1 point

Was about to purchase vlog from US and thought easier to purchase from Panasonic UK. Sounded sensible way to go or so I thought. Phoned Panasonic UK to order and quess what, they know nothing about all this vlog news or what vlog was never mind the GH4R which they didnt know about either. They were not interested in my queery at all and probably thought I was a crank until I mentioned I would post what they had said on the internet, then they got interested lol So after much apologising they said they would get back to me. Going to go ahead and purchase from US site for an easy life.1 point

Is it 10 bit? I guess not. I think it should be 10 bit for a paid upgrade if the camera can handle it. If this was the case there would be no question whether it was worth it. People would be going out and buying new gh4s in anticipation.1 point

BMPCC vs. a6000 vs. A7ii vs. GH4 vs. Samsung NX1
IronFilm reacted to Marco Tecno for a topic
The sensor in nx1 if far more capable. But nx1 has not a native vlog profile. The hope is that samsung releases it soon. And for free, as done till now with new features.1 point -
Nearly identical, actually. The biggest difference is in depth, due to the GH4's deeper, more comfortable grip. http://camerasize.com/compare/#381,624 That's an outright lie. The Blackmagic cameras use active thermoelectric cooling to keep their sensors at peak performance and prevent stopping for cool-downs. In fact, this is one of the reasons they're such battery hogs--that cooling system sucks a ton of juice. Clearly a smart engineering decision, since neither camera has heat management issues. That stabilization sucks compared to Olympus'--and even most lens-based stabilizers--anyway. Those cameras are also less than half the price of the A7R II. The E-M5 II has a 2.7mm increase in width, 3.9mm decrease in depth from the original. Clearly the articulating screen isn't adding bulk. No, we're criticizing them because they can't match their competitors in basic areas, like bit depth, heat management, AF performance, battery life, stills compression, color science, IS performance, and general ergonomics. Last time I checked, falling behind your competitors was a valid reason to criticize a company. It's not my job to think about the physics of it. It's theirs. And if they can't think about it long enough to come up with solutions instead of ways to buff their spec sheets, they're going to get this reaction next time, too. Yes, we are complaining that the headline feature of the camera (4K internal) craps out in 15 minutes. Too bad they didn't manage to pack in a proper heatsink, an intuitive UI, or a battery that lasts more than an hour and a half.1 point

Lenses
mercer reacted to Henry Gentles for a topic
Yes they are amazing and very sharp too! I have 3 old Zeiss the Jena 35mm 2.4, Pancolar 50mm 1.8 and Biometar 80mm 2.8 medium format which they actually used in Hollywood I read!! All very sharp even fully open and yes they certainly give you that cinematic dimension and muted contrast, not that the colours are lower but they're just different, vintage and creamy esp the Pancolar. The Flektagon Jena 35mm 2.4f is the best though, probably the best lens ever made imo, honestly everything looks very special through that lens but that's no secret!1 point -
Thanks. I went back to square one after having quite a few unsuccessful attempts and remembered and old video from me, which i really liked: Recipe is as follows: Standard with -5,-5,-5,-5 Highlight / Shadow 0,0 Iso was Auto, but i guess it was 200-400 Tiffen Ultra Contrast 3 Filter FilmConvert with GH4 Profile, FJ SuperX 400 emulation was used with 30% grain Some slight adjustment in the shadows to give it more contrast, thats it. Works out of the box on the GM1 and seems to work out of the box on the LX100. Will put up some small demo video later.1 point

Seeking Info About the B&H Projection Lens
nahua reacted to Gabriel Copoeru for a topic
Actually you don't have to do double focus. Just set your taking lens to infinity and focus with the B&H. Works like an iscorama, but with an annoyingly long focus throw.1 point -
Hey, I love this project! I have the exact same lens and hadn´t heard about the front modification, seems really interesting! This is a bit of my experience with this lens and anamorphic in general. I have a pretty special grandpa that managed to build me an adapter made of methacrylate that fits the back of the Bell&Howell and converts it to a normal m49 filter thread. Pretty absurd, but it works. On the front I attached a 77 diameter diopter directly to the mattebox, and voilà, ready to shoot. Did a couple of test shoots with my GH2 and then I shot a short documentary with this on the A7s with a Jupiter 9, and it didn´t vignette at all, even though it´s full frame, so nice. Although it´s a nightmare to shoot with, I dropped the filters a couple of times, I had to constantly do the double focus, a pain in the ass, but managed to finish it and looks good. I really love the look of this lens, and I agree that it flares more nicely when paired with a vintage lens like the Helios or the Jupiter. Also, as a bit of an accident, I discovered that the methacrylate leaked light inside the lens and created a rather unusual white vignette that´s very unique and I actually ended up liking it and not fixing it in post. It´s always nice to try stupid ideas, you may end up using them. xD You can see some shots below. The setup was: A7s + Jupiter 9 85 f2 + Bell&Howell Anamorphic + Diopter Oh! And be careful with mounting the lens, I destroyed my m42 to NEX adapter. Too much weight, should have bought a clamp. I´ll follow the thread and see where this goes, maybe mod my lens too.1 point
-
My Antares finderscope clamp arrived today and it fits great: Here I reversed the bracket, which puts the base at the end that joins the taking lens. However, this makes the unit nose-heavy: I think it's best to have it clamped the other way around as in the previous pictures - adding stability to the end that gets the most vibration/movement (from focusing). The top screws can be used to help visually align the anamorphic, too. As mentioned, I'll have have to do do some modding to flatten the rail base, but I am very encouraged by the results! All in all, $37 well-spent, I think! Cheers, |. . | .|1 point

Any of these could be shot on Alexa (or even film) and still not look cinematic. Cinematic is more about camera movement, shot composition, sound etc. From what I have seen of the C300 mk II, I have no doubt that it would have no issues on a hollywood set, even as an A cam.1 point
-
What I find interesting is the highend fashion look of some parts of video 1 and 3... I could see this becoming the DSMC system that Red always dreamed of (maybe C500 mk II will be higher resolution, to really nail it). Canon colours and 15 stops = swoon $15k is alot, but the dual pixel focus, very high DR, very high ISO in a small, lightweight camera checks alot of boxes. So, so tempted, if it had 4K/60p I would have pressed buy now already. BTW - first video is mostly using face detection AF.1 point
