  1. Massive resolution photos...which is a big bonus if you're looking for an all in one camera.

  2. I was looking forward to this announcement and now I'm not so sure what I think. All the obvious improvements are there, IBIS, 4K plus that nice extra of 1080p 120fps. And, of course, I look forward to seeing some consumer footage. But I had kind of hoped for less rolling shutter...or slightly increased MP count... I might save (a lot) more and look at the Ursa Mini at some point. I can't quite get over the fact that some of the most impressive and filmic footage I've seen is from Blackmagic.

    Sony A7S II is out!

I firmly believe it is in Sony's interest to reassure the market that overheating will not be a problem with this camera. It's too big of a problem to ignore.

  7. So after a few days, and shooting a few dozen photos, and a handful of videos, I have to say I'm pretty blown away... it definitely feels a lot more "modern" than the Nikon, whether or not that's good in personal taste, but I dig it... it's not exactly intuitive, especially how the menus are so context sensitive, but that's just getting used to it... the 4K is AMAZING! But wow, the file sizes eh? Overall, couldn't be happier! Thanks again everyone!

    Sony A7S II is out!

Improving the rolling shutter from 32 to 8 msec is quite an achievement and if true I find hard to believe they forgot to advertise. Now the interviewer might be wrong, expressing his own beliefs or the translation bad, but here is another part from that article: "For the recording time is limited only by a possible overheating or the European 29 minutes limit"

  13. Tax? A7s/ii is a run&gun type of camera aimed at both enthusiasts and professionals, whereas Ursa mini is more the workhorse type that is only for professionals. Don't let the prices confuse you, because when you add all the necessary equipment, they will not end up not only in the same price range but also not even close in the weight/size scale. P.S. children idiots? Nice picture you have there

I believe that at this price: 3400 Euros is a camera for children idiots .... Ursa mini is a whole lot better, for only 2800 Euros ...

  16. Anyone else feel like this was too much information to take in all at once today? I had to take a break. Some questions that spring to mind: (havent checked thoroughly for answers) 1. What is the readout speed? It it the same as the GH4 due to being limited by the sensor, or is faster due to different processing/cooling. 2. Is the 4k and QHD native crop like it is in the GH4? I would assume it is, but what about HD, is that also a crop, or the QHD downscaled, or the full sensor downscaled? 3 Is the mini SSD proprietary? Shooting 4k raw is going to need some extra media.

    Sony A7S II is out!

There was on the original, can't see why there wouldn't be on this one. Though presumably it shares the same caveat of being upscaled from ~2.5K.

    Sony A7S II is out!

I'd be surprised if it were reduced that much, Sony makes big claims with things like RS and DR that never pan out. My guess is that's not the case, which is why it wasn't highlighted in the rollout - because just 8.3ms would be huge news.

    Sony A7S II is out!

Sounds correct, unless there is a catch with the "full pixel readout". It will be interesting to see why Sony decided not to advertize one of the most important improvements if it is indeed 8.3ms also in FF 4K mode.

Rolling shutter in 4K has to be reeeally nasty -> shot at 40 seconds.

  22. I think based on Phil's FS7 slow motion video I have an idea of what he does to grade which I always liked. I recolored my slo mo fs7 video with same style: Basically I think he applies even to sony cameras in filmconvert an arri alexa lut - probably fuji eternal and or kodak 5219 - and raises the shadows up - milky shadows. From here he just affects the offset and plays with sharpness over the final image. The alexa lut in filmconvert gives really nice greens and blues as a starting point. I did that plus went to a kodak release print by going after filmconvert to rec 709 generic impulz luts to a cineon then off to a film print. But not every video is the same technique at all and not one lut works well for each video - each is different depending on scene - color balance - etc - but I like the rich look he got out of the fs7 and it made me reevalutate the camera. I am now pro the fs7 again and think the fs1 will be a pretty amazing camera. I am still completely mesmorized by color - by how it all works - to get good skin tones but also to create looks that feel unique and interesting. It's a very patient and experimental artform. I no longer think we should all be trapped to c300 for skin tones - great skin tones and feel can come from s log 3.

  23. OH EM GEE!!! That is making the PL/B4 camera be a killer studio camera! Unfortunately not something which would interest most of us here. Makes it anamazing doco camera too (if only it had ND filters built in....). I wonder if the PL mount could be swapped for a Nikon F mount, just like it can be swapped now for a B4 Mount?? If so, it could make the PL version be the perfect option for me!! Pity about them dropping GPS functionality. But understandable

    The new Sony FS5

Curious - just looked at the launch videos. I like to be constructive, but those launch videos were absolutely terrible. They sold me on the form factor, but not the image. The grading in particular was like a thrown up fruit salad.

    Sony A7S II is out!

I doubt slog3 is going to be better than slog2. If anything it will make it worse for skin colors since there are even less values assigned in mid gray level. Increasing the dynamic range with 8 bits is just not good for skin colors. I wish they had included 10 bits. But that might have been impossible with the current thermal envelope of these cameras. Now, the only difference between this and A7rII for my use is the better high ISO sensitivity. Maybe the overheating too since I doubt they released a video centric camera with overheating problems.

  28. Also, BSI sensor with faster readout, same FPS despite 3.5x the MP. PADF, which gives you vastly superior eye AF and better tracking AF - features I find to be awesome, but I shoot hundreds of stills a week. Honestly, I was hoping for a MP bump with full readout on S35 mode, faster FPS and PADF - something we'll probably see next year in the A7sIII. To me this is just meh. But I'm pretty happy with my A7rII. edit: honestly, sticking with 8-bit is the biggest disappointment. I have to step up to the FS5 to get 10-bit.

  36. I think the iPad Pro looks useless. 32gb of non expandable storage, max 128gb storage. The only hope is a new Surface Pro next month, but I assume it won't come close to the new Lenovo P50 and P70. At least the Surface runs a proper OS that can use software (instead of lightweight apps) and with the dock it has the ports you need.

  37. I have no idea. Couple of entries about the audio, video and stuff. Possibly time code related, too?

  38. Premiere handles it nicely, Resolve (at least 12 and for me) is a PITA. No audio unless you rewrap into .mov and after that I'm having major issues as well (might be Windows 10 or the beta release, though). Sony uses some non-standard audio encoding and XML metadata files. Nothing major, though.

  40. thanks - yes it's a LUT from for instance Visioncolor Impulz makes one - or some people make them for free - convert from log space or rec 709 space (the default video space) into cineon then in cineon go from cineon to a film print and you can make your film feel bigger and control the image more. Cineon colorspace is really something beautiful to work from.

  41. Hi, My LUTs are made for flat footages (LOG profiles), but I'm currently "converting" them for Rec.709 profiles and it will be available in the next update. I was just doing this because I exactly need to use my LUTs with the LX100 I'll post a message here when I'm done (in one or two weeks). About color skin, I highly recommend the LUTs made by Sebastian Castilho especially for the Panasonic cameras : - http://sebcastilho.com/2014/10/05/panasonic-skin-correction-lut/ - http://sebcastilho.com/2015/04/19/pleasing-neutralising-panasonic-luts/

  45. I'd recommend you should go give Oly a hands on try. The stabilizer on the EM5II is at a whole 'nother level. Crazy good/cool. At the very least it can be a useful Bcam for specific situations. Driving in a car, sailing on a boat, scooting along in a tuk-tuk. If you want or need it, it's a very very wonderful tool to have in one's arsenal. Or, grab a cheap EM10! Anyway, all these cameras listed here are pretty cool; can't go wrong, really.

  46. According to the statistics on my channel a huge majority watch on their computer. Cellphones are rising and tablets are dropping. The big point of 4k for youtube IMO is the higher bitrate and lower compression that makes the HD look better. My tests showed that HD upscaled also looked better due to the higher bitrate. It even happens to be that people can't tell 4K and HD upscaled apart on youtube.

  47. Easy. Go to your media page, and select your clips, right click and choose attributes, then under video tab, select pixel rate to anamorphic or cinemascope. See the screenshot below.

  48. Well, I'm still learning Resolve too but I've found the following works... Go to Color tab when selecting a clip, select Sizing tool > adjust height/width to custom size. Select 'Create' to save that as a Sizing preset that can be saved and applied to all - or selected clips on import. Or use the Sizing presets that come in Resolve for Cinemascope/Anamorphic > under 'clip attributes' when right-clicking a clip in the 'Media' window. Example screenshot is of footage shot in ML Raw at 50p, so here I have increased the height by 1.65% to get back to 16:9 aspect. Exactly the same re-sizing method can be used to correct Anamorphic footage by reducing height by whatever ratio is needed for the scope in question.

  49. Thanks Premini! I emailed him and I'm now a very happy owner of the Redstan +0.25 Doublet. A real gem! Only 8 made. Sharpness and flare are incredible. I'm excited about the SRL Magic rangefinder for my baby Hypergonar set up but It's still gonna be important to use achromatic doublets to get optimal image quality from the anamorphic at close range. I stack two Tokina +0.4 Achromatic diopters with a Marumi DHG Achromat Macro Close Up 330 (+3) 72mm and get really nice images. The image I attached was with this setup. The Marumi is very nice and not much money compared to the others. The Polaroid Close - Up 500D is nice and cheap!
