Great article

http://admiringlight.com/blog/the-sliding-scale-of-camera-capabilities/ That applies 100% to video. Interesting to see how Canon was a killer, democratizing the industry for stills and then for video (5D2) by releasing affordable devices with pro features. Such a shame it is not the case anymore. What changed at Canon? All of this because of their Cine line I hate it, and hate all of you who are buying C100, C300, C500 that make money to Canon and make them cripple the 7Ds/5Ds bodies for us non professional ... Without this Cine line, we would get a 5D4 with 4K with great bitrate and Canon Log - DPAF and so on....... I still think 5D4 will have 4K unlike many of you (don't imagine how a body can come in 2016 without 4K, that would be non imaginable) when even iPhones get 4K. But it will probably a 5D3 like video, which means not clean, poor bitrate, no HFR, ... Anyway.3 points -

2.3 kg compared to FS5 827.8 g......not including lens....no matter how good the image is, it is simply too heavy for events and run & gun documentary kinds of shoots....There are many critics when C100 first came out. Many people complain about the lousy specs but I see the potential of this cam for weddings, events and non high level commercial shoots, thus I bought it and simply love it. It simply works with excellent ergonomic and I've been using it for 3 years and never regret buying it. I've gotten myself a A7s and although the image is much much sharper and detailed compared to c100, I still prefer the C100 as the ultimate run & gun cam. The only thing that's holding me from upgrading to C100 Mk2 is the lack of 4K and higher frame rate which is much needed for me. With the announcement of FS5, it has won me over with the same excellent ergonomics as c100 and good specs. Ultimately all I want from a cam is it to work out of the box, highly portable and good ergonomic. Whether its 420 or 422, 8 or 10 bits doesn't matter to me because all my clients are layman and can't tell the difference and IMO, most modern cam have excellent image quality.2 points

(Scene 1 & 2) Camera A, (Scene 3) Camera B I'm going to say the Panasonic GM1. It's a little soft. A little moiré on your sweatshirt and a little soft. It has nice colors though. (Scene 1 & 2) Camera B, (Scene 3) Camera A I guess the BlackMagic Pocket Cinema Camera. More DOF. Better DR and sharper, but this one confused me on Scene 3- could be wrong. I also happen to also know that you have both of these cameras. There's my logic, but I could be wrong. Thank you for you enthusiasm and effort on your youtube videos. Love the channel.2 points -

Im not talking about anything that comes from post. im talking about camera output. more on that later just talkin about in camera color rn tho nothing could be further from the truth. i want a high level of color accuracy for reproducing sets, costuming, and prop elements (which were very expensive and time consuming to make). i want nature to look like nature, i dont want to have to avoid shooting something as common as a F------ BLUE SKY for any reason, i want people to look awesome, and healthy, like actual living creatures with blood running through their veins fyi im capable of being extremely critical of the alexa, everybodys favorite movie camera. im not a mark; i know what i want and im gonna keep bitching until i get it, thats my job as a consumer. after TONS of bitching from us all about slog2 on the a7s, heres slog3 on its successor –– no coincidence. anyway, i digress, just saying that youre a bit unclear on what im "looking for" these video reinforce my point: ive seen em, not impressed. at all. im not into retro luts or affected color grading, thats a fine option –– but i described above what i want from a digital video camera but then again –– some feature filmmakers are going to map all their colors to teal and orange in their edit, and for them this shit doesnt rlly matter too much. slog2 is great for black and white work ive made some beautiful stuff2 points

No association with REDSTAN, other than a very happy customer! I previously ordered a Vid Atlantic "kit". When it arrived, I immediately noticed the set screws for the scope are metal. Bummer. Shrug, proceeded to get it to mount, no success, it doesn't fit either my Sankor 16F, nor my Kowa Bell & Howell. I was really bummered out now. Received the REDSTAN clamp, the first obvious thing when opening the package, it is a PROPER qualitiy machined solution, NOT a hacked extension tube, as with the Vid Atlantic. The quality difference is night and day. Installing the REDSTAN clamp to my Kowa B&H, it was a perfect fit from the start. And NO metal scope adjustment set screws! I would think that most people here already know this information. Just thought I'd share my experience for others who don't.1 point

Hey CTRT, If you're looking for manual primes to compliment your Panasonic 12-35, I'd recommend checking out the SLR Magic line. They're all metal, fast as hell, and have a creamy, 3D rendering style that's extremely cinematic. I currently own the 12 and the 25 for my BMPCC/GH3, and they've performed extremely well thus far.1 point -
thanks for your advice, all of it... I will be shooting with this for a long time... the only other tech I want really is a couple of quirky lenses and a new tripod... The whole LUTs thing has really opened my eyes to a lot of potential for music videos, etc., and yes, music GREATLY informs how I edit, etc. Here's a little thing I did today with my daughter: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EpKUCgdrW4o Obviously it's not anything, but a little bit of footage for me to play with, but it still looks amazing... for just 5 mins of work. and look after your dog, it's meant to live in the alps I think!1 point

thats awesome, great to hear. unlike cameras and lenses, one thing that you cant buy is talent, which you seem to have plenty of based on your original post~! im sure that your practice as a musician informs your video work in all kinds of ways, intangibles that i might not even understand...! if i could give you one piece of advice going forward, it would be this: avoid the rabbithole of technology research; its neverending shoot with your new camera. its great. id buy one today! cheers p.s. it is WAY too hot for my st bernard-great dane in san diego rn1 point

Flynn reacted to Don Kotlos for a topic
There were two problems with SLOG2/SGAMMUT. First is limited space with 8 bits that can lead to banding and unattractive tonal gradations and the second was SGAMMUT that with its " twisted" colorspace required very fine color tuning. I am not that sure slog3 will help for the first problem but the sgammut3.cine will require less color manipulation and thus it might result in less problems. We will have to wait...1 point -

3 axis gimbals are dead, this is insanity
Rinad Amir reacted to wolf33d for a topic
Yes you can. It is just recommended to shoot at 1/125s minimum for best result. Plus it has a motion blur capability in post that works well (see video). Absolutely not. Did you bother at least looking at the link? Actually on a consumer grade shit PC it does render at 8fps for FHD. Considering you are a filmaker with a decent station, you can expect 8fps in 4K. Not bad at all. Indeed. If you want native 8k it is not the solution either. It is the solution if you want amazingly smooth footage in a 30 grams package instead of your horrible 5 kilos gimbal, to transform 4K footage into FHD (which 90% of people do anyway). Relax. The title of this subject is 2nd degree. This is a first view of a prototype as you say not even on the market. Saying gimbals are dead means they soon will be. In the future we won't use gimbal (in 5 years from now) we will have cameras that will have this guys' system integrated and deliver 4K from 8K silky smooth. The tech of this product made from a young french guy is insane in my opinion. Why Olympus Sony Canon DJI and so on did not make this ? I mean, they have the cameras they should do it internally !! AND IMAGINE THIS ON GIMBALS !! there is already those sensor in a Phantom 3... DJI could do that and deliver a pefect image (this product works best for micro vibration and jittery/jellow images). Also with a gopro, I would certainly have a GoPro with this in 4K superview and deliver silky smooth 1080p than having an horrible twice expensive huge GoPro 3 axis gimbal that does not deliver half of this smoothness. Look at the results in hyperlapse too... This is insane. Just look at the other videos on the link. Anyway, with reluctant negative resistant-to-change people like you, we would still be at the age of stone I say congrats to these guys and even if the product is far from perfect and obviously not useable for 100% of the needs, it is great tech. I aplaude and look forward for the exciting future in camera tech.1 point -
3 axis gimbals are dead, this is insanity
Nick Hughes reacted to Michael Ma for a topic
In my opinion it is pretty limited in use. You can't use this if you want to shoot 24p with motion blur. Which is pretty much what most people want to shoot in. Also, the processing this requires is gonna be a pretty heavy workload, even though it doesn't have to analyze the video. it's still working with 4K frames. With a gimbal, it is stabilized out of the box. Last, if you want native 4K this is not the solution either. Additionally, it is still not a product you can buy today. Is the 3-axis gimbal dead? I strongly disagree. This is not a replacement for a gimbal. It's just an improvement for unplanned shooting day with just a camera and nothing else. Unless you prefer to shoot 30p or 60p at 1/60 or 1/120 shutter, your footage will be compromised.1 point -
As long as clients demand Canon color, the King's Ransom will be paid. ARRI easily fetches an Emperor's Ransom. If Sony could provide something closer to F35/F65 color on these cameras, that might make a difference. Most of Sony's recent promo videos have little skin tones, and even landscape colors can look off. The FS7 can't even match the C300 in basic color accuracy in this simple test: https://vimeo.com/113558024 While it might be possible to grade the FS7 to look better, it's a lot of work. Time is money. Another point is ease (and speed) of use during a professional shoot. Canon's are easy and fast, and reliable (not clear if the bugs or complicated slow menus of the FS7/FS5 have been fixed).1 point

it matters a lot in situations where there is only one of the basic colours: for example under water, where only blue is left, (green and red gone) you only have 8 bit blue left, and this give clear banding 10 bit is much better in this case1 point -
Dji stealing costumers?
JazzBox reacted to fuzzynormal for a topic
"Dji stealing costumers?" They don't want costumes, just the people that make them! But let's be fair, the OP is probably someone that's not using English as a native language. Still, DJI has a rep for having non-existant "costumer" service, so it's most likely a legitimate complaint. Still, you have to be prepared. If your business success is dependent on one battery, you need to reconsider things.1 point -

This topic needs an image to go along with it. Now, that looks like a pretty nifty setup right there, such a compact form factor, yet still all the fancy smancy controls. Is there any dedicated shoulder attachment for it when it comes out? I could imagine an extention for the handgrip and a little shoulder attachment to really make it a mini FS7. - ok, yeah this might be a thing: http://www.sony.co.uk/pro/product/broadcast-products-camcorders-tripods-supports/vct-sp2bp/overview/1 point

the Phil Bloom color grading look and learning to relove the sony fs7
Ed_David reacted to Bioskop.Inc for a topic
Well after extensive testing with BM ProRes [film] footage, whilst using FCPX, it really seems that the Alexa profiles are so much better than the BM specific ones - skin tones, contrast & colours appear much nicer. However, I have found that to get the best results (or at least, to my liking) in FCPX, I am taking the flat Film footage & adjusting exposure, WB & saturation - this gets the footage looking like it should do e.g. revealing all the goodness of the BM footage. Its only then that i've put the Alexa rec709 profile from Filmconvert on top of all this & it adds that extra something that was really lacking in the BM profiles of Filmconvert. Now my footage really seems to come to life in a much more pleasing way than before. This is especially so for this Doc i'm finishing up - Black skin tones just always came out looking un-natural, with hints of orange/yellow. The Alexa profile just nails it perfectly or at least a lot better than before! The 2 flavours of Log profiles didn't seem as nice going straight onto the BM flat film footage though - got me thinking that I could try making Film footage flatter before adding FC... cheers Ed for pointing us towards Alexa FC profiles, more work for me now, but better looking footage!1 point -

I was looking forward to this announcement and now I'm not so sure what I think. All the obvious improvements are there, IBIS, 4K plus that nice extra of 1080p 120fps. And, of course, I look forward to seeing some consumer footage. But I had kind of hoped for less rolling shutter...or slightly increased MP count... I might save (a lot) more and look at the Ursa Mini at some point. I can't quite get over the fact that some of the most impressive and filmic footage I've seen is from Blackmagic.1 point -
The new camera will also have S-LOG 2, so you can easily switch back and have even more fun1 point
-
So after a few days, and shooting a few dozen photos, and a handful of videos, I have to say I'm pretty blown away... it definitely feels a lot more "modern" than the Nikon, whether or not that's good in personal taste, but I dig it... it's not exactly intuitive, especially how the menus are so context sensitive, but that's just getting used to it... the 4K is AMAZING! But wow, the file sizes eh? Overall, couldn't be happier! Thanks again everyone!1 point
