  1. Here some beautiful footage from the upcoming Ursa mini 4k: "Most of the footage was shot in Prores HQ (which looks amazing - even more so than the BMCC), Full HD, 60fps. We used all sorts of lenses: Canon 24-70 2.8L, 50mm 1.2L, 100mm 2.8L IS, 17-55 2.8 IS and the Sigma 18-35 1.8. Please note that while the firmware we had on the Ursa Mini was as close to the final firmware as possible, but was still in beta nonetheless."

  2. I'd rather get the camera in the hands of more people which inevitably means more creative content that will show off the technology rather than the community be a bunch of stuck-up entitled assholes who think they're better than everyone else. PS. I drive a 911 and I think Caymans and Boxsters are great cars and they don't "dilute" the Porsche brand. High-and-mighty people ruin it for owner communities.

    Sony A7S II is out!

I want a camera that renders like that kodak scan.

  4. Nothing about that looks cheap/budget. Can't see a shooting package coming in any less than $10k (probably about the same as Ursa Mini, when totalled up). RED usually start the hype machine when they know something is about to drop from a competitor. Either they over estimated what the FS5 would be, or something is brewing elsewhere (or maybe they know the 4.6K mini/C300 mk II footage is gonna blow everyone away).

  6. Hi everyone, I've decided to make all of the music on my site free for commercial use as well as noncommercial. Just please credit me properly as detailed on my homepage. If you decide to use one or more of my pieces, a donation would be greatly appreciated...any amount you can swing would be helpful. As always, thanks for your feedback and I hope you find something you can use. Eric

    Great article

http://admiringlight.com/blog/the-sliding-scale-of-camera-capabilities/ That applies 100% to video. Interesting to see how Canon was a killer, democratizing the industry for stills and then for video (5D2) by releasing affordable devices with pro features. Such a shame it is not the case anymore. What changed at Canon? All of this because of their Cine line I hate it, and hate all of you who are buying C100, C300, C500 that make money to Canon and make them cripple the 7Ds/5Ds bodies for us non professional ... Without this Cine line, we would get a 5D4 with 4K with great bitrate and Canon Log - DPAF and so on....... I still think 5D4 will have 4K unlike many of you (don't imagine how a body can come in 2016 without 4K, that would be non imaginable) when even iPhones get 4K. But it will probably a 5D3 like video, which means not clean, poor bitrate, no HFR, ... Anyway.

don't talk about gh4 nor A7S 2 , same stuff, just enjoy this simple video recorded in Full HD prores HQ on the 4K mini Ursa (not the 4,6K 15 stops version, so let's imagine)...RED and Alexa or not so far this time...

  13. It does seem that the actual gap between this ($30,000) and the A7Smk1 (currently $1500 to buy new) is small. Their footage doesnt look very good. Their lens mount is a hindrance since it limits the use of specialist lenses with short back focus distances. The actual industrial design is rather nice though, and I imagine this will do very well with underwater shooters who can't live with the pitfalls of the a7s. This could infact be the perfect match for FORBES70 as it happens. Body will sit quite nicely into a slightly reworked FORBES body, and the clean look from 100,000iso will be good to combat the inherent slower lens speeds of medium format lenses.

    Ursa mini 4k footage

Looks great, nicely shot too. Nice colors, e.g., love the group shot at 1:56. Indoors look good too, though they had extra lights so it's hard to tell. There's some moire at 1:10, not sure if that will be an issue (didn't see it anywhere else in the video).

  15. The nice thing about low quality YT 720p video launches is: If people like it, "Imagine how great it would be in full Q!" and if it's lousy, "Hey, it was YT 720p, what did you expect?" Sorry, couldn't help the cynicism.

    Ursa mini 4k footage

Gorgeous. Only thing that jumps out is the moire at 1:10, wonder if that was baked into the ProRes. I'm also curious why it was shot HD and not 4k.

  17. Yeah. If you're patient. I have a low-end shoot tomorrow. I usually shoot 60p with the 51mbps, but I'll roll off some 24p@77. FYI, I use the "Natural" profile. Contrast -2, Sharpness -2, Saturation -2, and then on the image curve settings I lift the shadow 1 notch and turn down the highlight one notch. However, I can put the Natural profile on default as well as the curve so you'll have a base to judge. I've never charted the camera. I use those settings above as my best guess for post production flexibility.

    Ursa mini 4k footage

It´s been long ago, that an image/- colors has impressed me so much. The important thing is always the image, not the specs. Great camera!

  19. Yep, 4:2:0 might indeed introduce some banding but for grading 10bit will be a much better improvement. Anyways, lets all agree that a 10bit 4:2:2 will offer a much better image to grade.

    HUMAN. The Movie.

HUMAN. The Movie. What makes us human. Forget for a second all the stupid things we worry about, APS FF s35 UHD FPS DR IBIS ISO DOF RAW LOG LUT THEFUCK, all those stupid things. Human shows (spoken) portraits of people around the world and (aerial) beautiful, extraordinarily beautiful, views of the Earth. Get your favourite armchair and wonderful 4K display and 90 minutes for yourself and watch it. Or use your 7 inch tablet whilst a TV is screaming in the next room. Watch it. Human is made up of 200 incredibly personal portraits. Interviews with people from all walks of life, and that expose many aspects of what makes us human. Human has just been released in several formats (more info on the official site). There's a special extended version (3 volumes of about 90 minutes each) that can be watched on youtube thanks to an arrangement with Google. It is available with embedded subtitles, and there are more languages than the three I show here. Choose the one you feel more comfortable with. English. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vdb4XGVTHkE French. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FLqft-ICVQo Spanish. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N1WdfVWo1pQ “I dreamed of a film in which the power of words would resonate with the beauty of the world. The movie relates the voices of all those, men and women, who entrusted me with their stories. And it becomes their messenger.” Director Yann Arthus-Bertrand There is a lot of behind the scenes info here, but I'd suggest going there only after you've watched the movie. English. https://humanthemovie.withgoogle.com/ French. https://humanthemovie.withgoogle.com/intl/fr-fr/ Spanish: https://humanthemovie.withgoogle.com/intl/es-es/ Official site: English. http://www.human-themovie.org/ French. http://www.human-themovie.org/fr/ (I must confess I couldn't avoid thinking in terms of sharpness, lighting, and colours. But that's because I'm stupid.) A MOVIE WITH THREE VOICES These three voices – People’s word, Earth’s testimonial et Music’s lyrism – act together to provide a single voice to our humanities. THE VOICE OF PEOPLE As an ode to humanity, HUMAN is a rare collection of stories, faces and fates. Yann-Arthus Bertrand takes us into an immersive experience through human destiny. Through several witnesses who succeed one another and confide, the film director portrays a contrasted humanity. THE VOICE OF EARTH Through the aerial sequences, Yann Arthus-Bertrand shares his vision of the world and the people with the spectator, and offers a poetic and critical insight of our planet. In HUMAN, the camera lens reveals places of an unsuspected beauty, but also poses a careful look at the lives of men worldwide. THE VOICE OF MUSIC As an universal language, music transcends our emotions, sublimates the pictures and rhythmises the story.

  21. It doesn't necessarily, but i if you're doing something staged like narrative, size & form factor might not be as big a deal as if you were shooting something where the camera rig had to be more light & nimble, like a documentary or event coverage. I use an el cheapo Fotga DP3000 follow focus. There are better products out there, but it is small, reasonably sturdy and fit my budget, Cheers, |. . | .|

  22. /\ agreed, I'd say $4K for the brain, plus another $4K+ in accessories to get it up and running. So yeah I'd say ballpark of $9k or so complete package. Significantly cheaper than their epic, scarlet, etc. But still expensive for many indie filmmakers who don't have a solid budget, thats just my opinion

    Sony A7S II is out!

the reason there is no difference is because you are using a grayscale image so there is only luma information in your image so nothing gets subsampled. It is the foundation of how chroma subsampling works: "Chroma subsampling is the practice of encoding images by implementing less resolution for chroma information than for luma information, taking advantage of the human visual system's lower acuity for color differences than for luminance" only color information gets discarded when using chroma subsampling, in your images there is none. 4:2:0 4:2:2 4:4:4 ^ first number is the luma component, as you can see there is no reduction no matter the chroma subsampling.

  25. I would LOVE for the Ursa mini 4.6k to be a great camera and I would buy it if that is the case. However I keep reading over and over again complaints about corrupt files, camera crashes, fixed pattern noise unusable images, and overall unreliability of the bm cameras that I have zero expectations. Now we are talking red, industry proven cameras with amazing R3D format, yes the accessories will be expensive, but they might actually deliver a reliable workhouse in the price range that blackmagic has over hyped and failed over and over again due to severe issues on all models. Like you guys said it will come down to what an actual working package will cost, but this is seriously interesting news.

  28. I've heard people touting that on the forum like it's an established fact, but no one's ever given me a single example that demonstrates that 4:2:2 is more important than 10-bit. My eyes, the articles I've read, and the math, on the other hand, tell me that 10-bit is a way bigger quality difference.

  29. Hey CTRT, If you're looking for manual primes to compliment your Panasonic 12-35, I'd recommend checking out the SLR Magic line. They're all metal, fast as hell, and have a creamy, 3D rendering style that's extremely cinematic. I currently own the 12 and the 25 for my BMPCC/GH3, and they've performed extremely well thus far.

  30. thanks for your advice, all of it... I will be shooting with this for a long time... the only other tech I want really is a couple of quirky lenses and a new tripod... The whole LUTs thing has really opened my eyes to a lot of potential for music videos, etc., and yes, music GREATLY informs how I edit, etc. Here's a little thing I did today with my daughter: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EpKUCgdrW4o Obviously it's not anything, but a little bit of footage for me to play with, but it still looks amazing... for just 5 mins of work. and look after your dog, it's meant to live in the alps I think!

  31. thats awesome, great to hear. unlike cameras and lenses, one thing that you cant buy is talent, which you seem to have plenty of based on your original post~! im sure that your practice as a musician informs your video work in all kinds of ways, intangibles that i might not even understand...! if i could give you one piece of advice going forward, it would be this: avoid the rabbithole of technology research; its neverending shoot with your new camera. its great. id buy one today! cheers p.s. it is WAY too hot for my st bernard-great dane in san diego rn

  36. They're still too expensive IMO. Here in Australia, the 128gb model is $1529. That would buy a Sony RX100 mkIV with a 128gb card, extra batteries, accessories, and you'd still have money left over. No matter how good the 4K is on the iphone, it's still going to fall apart in low light with the small sensor. Even most Youtubers avoid them in favour of dedicated cameras. Or for that same price, you could buy a 256gb i5 Surface Pro 3, which has a decent enough camera that you could shoot photos with and edit directly in Photoshop CC, rather than using a phone app. 1080P video too and the ability to use proper video editing, compositing and colour grading programs. That's if you want to be one of those guys who shoot with a tablet. I'm looking forward to the next Lumia though. With Windows 10 and universal apps, you'll be able to hook it up to a keyboard, monitor & mouse, and use it as an actual PC. Should be a lot cheaper than any iPhone. The current models already shoot good 4K, which I used for a music video once. Only issue is the auto exposure. By the way, the vertical shooting on iPhones is for those apps like Snapchat and Beme. A complete waste of Apple's imaging technology.

    The new Sony FS5

Now I do like Canon colour, but it's not worth 3 times the price for a C300 MKii over this. Sony pricing is hammering Canon at the moment... At this rate we will end up 100% Sony within the year from 100% Canon a year before. Come on Canon, catch up!
