Surely this is a sick joke? Red should change their name to green, since that is clearly all they want from the film making community.3 points

Chinese New Years 2014 - SLR Magic Anamorphot + Canon 5D mkIII RAW - Night Extended Footage Any thoughts on 5D raw workflow, is it really so bad ? The results are breathtaking. In a week I'm buying a new camera but this 3years old mark3 produces jaw dropping images. I was set on GH4 but now....2 points

I was finally giving up on buying 5D in Sep 2015 but then I saw this.... (hint, it's RAW...)

C300 mk II disappointing?
Flynn reacted to Kristoferman for a topic
Has anyone seen this cinema 5D article? https://***URL not allowed***/canon-c300-mark-ii-review-dynamic-range/ They claim useable dynamic range at 12.3, right around what they say the fs7 has. Would be pretty disappointing imo. Was hoping for at least over 13.1 point -
I think that the big problem is with clients. If you show up with NX1 or A7s - it does't look profesional at all. After all only 5D is really a pro camera from all of them. Right now I'm thinking that 5d with a set of old nikkor lenses and slr anamarphic adapter 1.33 is a way to go. I still have a week or two before buying. Decisions, decisions.... If someone wants I've found awesome list of canon FD and old nikon lenses with one sentence reviews...1 point

You still have to folk out at least $2000 for the battery, battery module and charger as it only come with AC adapter module1 point

URSA Mini vs Raven (Updated with Raven 4.5K)
Xavier Plagaro Mussard reacted to neosushi for a topic
It's funny how people act surprised... This is RED we are talking about... We all said right after they announced it that their 4K couldn't be for all. It's for people who want to shoot film quality images on a budget. Yes a cinema camera (its still a dragon sensor seriously guys !!!). Now the real problem I see is the crop factor. Aside from that you still get a Dragon sensor 4K RAW 120fps camera for 10k. Now I don't think that everyone needs a Dragon Sensor, but prior from this announcement you couldn't get a dragon sensor for less than what ? 30k - 40k ? I think Red enlarged the choice for us. But if people thought they were going to have a run"gun camera from Red, they would be disappointed I guess1 point -

neosushi reacted to Kristoferman for a topic
Sure it's way more expensive once all of the stupidly overpriced accessories are added, but still...Getting a dragon sensor for 10K shootable is pretty cool in my opinion. And 4K 120fps it's something pretty differentiating from others in its price bracket. The only thing that's a deal breaker for me is the crop/mount combination.1 point -

Question for Rich
Flynn reacted to Zak Forsman for a topic
I used to stick oval apertures on the back of old nikons. drew them up in adobe illustrator and had them made here... https://www.ponoko.com I'm sure there are others. they charge too much for brass so i've only gotten them made in black acrylic or delrin. I have six Helios 44-2 lenses arriving tuesday. looking forward to cracking them open and making a general mess of things.1 point -
Question for Rich
Flynn reacted to Tito Ferradans for a topic
Did you know the reason they started doing these lenses was exactly this? To achieve a more pronunced oval bokeh using 1.33x anamorphics? My Helios arrived yesterday and I already figured how to open it, now i just need to make some apertures. It sucks that I don't know the name of the plastic or metal I need, but I'll sort this out during the weekend. hahaah1 point -
Indeed. For you non-developers here: It's a whole different world to work with something like Canon Firmware & Magic Lantern where you actually have a nice code environment with a higher level programming language like C on ARM instruction sets vs working with Nikon firmware where there's no such development environment publicly available - and you must patch hacks in binary. Nikonhacker project's slow progress isn't due to the developers being bad at development (I believe some members of Magic Lantern project are also contributing to Nikonhacker project ). Nikonhacker work on proprietary custom hardware that isn't as common & well documented as ARM - and have no proper higher level development environment. It doesn't matter how good of a developer you are and how much experience you have - something with less documentation (or as in this case, no public documentation at all) and without a proper development environment will always take longer to work with.1 point

Having to go to the REDuser forum for info makes me cry! So many posts along the lines of "C300 mk II D.O.A" and "I would hate to be Sony/Blackmagic/Canon now" ad nauseum. Whatever you may think of prosumer cams like the C300 and FS7, you can shoot all day on a couple of batteries and some cheap(er) media. I like REDs cameras, but I really detest that place.1 point
-
Basically this. The Nx1 without a doubt the best IQ out there unless you go for an FS7 / 1DC and higher range cameras, it is trully outstanding. I too was set out to buy a GH4+metabones for over a year, but then I discovered the NX1 and read a bit more about it, ended up getting the NX1 and am currently editting my first official job with it, so far Im very very impressed. Its incredibly versatile, you can make it look cinematic or video'ish1 point

C300 mk II disappointing?
Mattias Burling reacted to Jimmy for a topic
It is a bit sad that my Facebook feed is full of groups for cameras like the NX1 and A7s and are now saying with concrete authority that the C300 II only has 12.5 stops of DR, completely ignoring any tests that show otherwise, just to try and make themselves feel better about their cheaper cameras (I own both, great cameras, but i'm not gonna try and convince myself that they are now somehow better because of this C300 II review!). Why are so few people able to use logic and balance when it comes to tech? If the next 10 reviews also point to 12.5 stops, then there is cause for concern.. But until then, just add this review to the various other reviews to make any decision.1 point -

C100 Mkii - Resolution and Image Quality - How to Get the Best Out of It?

this is a fun read full of great production info if youre ever low on fighting spirit in your art practice and you like BTTF, check it out FUN FACT: the DeLorean in Back to the Future had a speedometer that maxed out at 85mph, thanks to a 1979 law set by President Jimmy Carter's National Highway Safety Administration which sought to promote travel at safer speeds. as the concept of "88mph" for time travel had already been built into the script, the production team replaced the manufacturers speedometer with the digital readout that is so famous today NOT SO FUN FACT: THEY WERE SHOOTING WITH A DIFFERENT STAR. AND IT SUCKED. AND THEY SAW THAT. WISE!!!!!!! tough situation tho; gives me faith to think that AT LEAST IVE NEVER DONE THAT (yet) but rlly tho, who could play that role better than michael j fox? not eric stoltz the method actor thats for sure lol. but hindsight is always 20/20 anyway, never give up *cena towel*1 point -

Output A7R M2 is 8 bit 422. Better bit rate, less compression help. That test posted by Emanuel is correct. We will test with a GH4 of a friend of us. I can inform you later.1 point
-
It is clear internal 4:2:0 is much compressed. 4:2:2, higher bitrate. You miss the point of Emanuel. He didn't say 4:2:0 is the reason for banding. He said you don't need 10 bit to avoid banding. Higher bitrate 4:2:2 is okay. I've done tests with the Shogun. Same results of that test.1 point
-
Yea, best to maintain a healthy dose of skepticism. Especially since they claim overheating is a false issue (or perhaps they are just referring to the A7S series).1 point
-
I also find them useful. We just bought a Shogun for our A7 M2. That test made our purchase. No buyer's remorse.1 point

The Diopter Thread.

In case anyone was wondering (like me) whether this recent 72mm achromat from Sigma (AML72-01) is any good...As its diopter strength is nowhere mentioned, I contacted Sigma Holland directly to find out. Turns out it is +1.74... :-/1 point -
