URSA Mini vs Raven (Updated with Raven 4.5K)
Xavier Plagaro Mussard and one other reacted to gh2sound for a topic
Get hired - don't buy lol ? So cant wrap my head around why anyone invests in visual transient tools, when the client pays for them anyway ? Just get the job, charge it on, do the next one, when camera +1 comes out? I may be simple, but all my colleagues who shoot all the world class shit, hire the operators, then prod manager hires the tool as requested, they don't even own a lens never-mind a camera - not one of my director chums who shoot the shit that is beyond global big even owns a single film-making device other than a phone. Like with music - an old analogue synth will not make you the Human League - just get on with the content rather than reaching for association? Was told as a kid people who do do - people who won't talk about it a lot. Who knows eh2 points -

URSA Mini vs Raven (Updated with Raven 4.5K)
Jonesy Jones reacted to Oliver Daniel for a topic
I've heard ridiculous statements saying "URSA Mini is dead" since the announcement of the Raven. The Blackmagic still has great ergonomics, 1080p LCD, XLR's, full ProRes, non-proprietary media and a very affordable but high quality EVF and shoulder kit. My pre-order is still in place for the Mini, but I'm still open for options too. Apart from the RED badge, I'm yet to figure out how opting for the Raven over The Mini would be of any benefit. My clients never ask about the camera. Just the ideas.1 point -
Huge Olympus update, E-M1 getting 24/25p, E-M5 II get flat profile
Don Kotlos reacted to Cinegain for a topic
The E-M1 didn't have a that terrible quality when it came out. Just quite limiting functionality and by now... nearing 2016 quality wise just quite significantly behind what others are throwing out. The E-M5II may have a couple of new additions such as the vari-angle display, grip with headphone jack, flexible frame rate options and a flat profile for example, but in the end it's not leaps ahead of the E-M1. Equipping the E-M1 might redeem some of its usefulness as Olympus is still the only M43 to pull off sensor stabilization during video recording. And as long as Panasonic will fail to give in and do the same, there might still be some interesting things to come from Olympus yet, especially when you think sensor tech and processing is rapidly improving and soon 4K will be a standard feature on cameras. Might not be top dog, but very reasonable still. I can imagine going with an almost exclusively Olympus kit. When not going for a special stylized look/character, I'd be happy enough with the three f/2.8 PRO zooms: 7-14, 12-40 & 40-150mm (with extender). Ok, you might want to throw in one of their primes... the 12mm f/2, perhaps the f/1.8 17mm, 25mm, 45mm and/or 75mm. Could even throw in the 60mm f/2.8 macro as a specialty lens. Admittedly Olympus has some of the greatest modern optics around. It's hard to really fault their lenses. They're almost always razor sharp where they need to be and render quite beautifully. Together with the sensor stabilized Olympus bodies a great combination, with great colors as well. That's kind of my thing with Sony or Samsung. I'm not really that into their native lens line-up and I like the compact form factor as an option to keep it small (and rather rig it up when really needed). If Panasonic remains too scared to do sensor stabilization during video because of some treaties signed with Olympus and Olympus not keeping up with the current video standard then I only see a future with Sony. They've already shown capable of keeping up and going forward with their efforts on the RX100-, RX10- and A7x-lines. The A5100/A6000 not too bad either of course, but I don't think they expected those would hit it off so much with us video folks. Next gen might take that into a bit more consideration. I think APS-C might be the best compromise of performance/compact/value(price) too. If they'd give us a A7RII lite... with 'lite' as in: APS-C sensor, then I'd be a happy camper. But until that happens... being invested in the M43 system already, loving the compact form factor and overall value... when you're looking for sensor stabilization, Olympus is up there as the no.1 pick. Great with native glass and awesome for third party lenses... vintage... cinema... anything really. Keeping things really light and simple, there's a reason why some people choose it over a camera that has the upper hand when it comes down to image quality and functionality. But I guess it's always a game of 'pick your poison'. Would be curious to know why it would take them to end of November for the roll out...1 point -

You don'the want to skimp when buying a computer for professional work Also the xps15 has the same specs as the macbook pro and can be had for less than $1000. Can't change physics: Thin & light laptops come with thermal throttling, worse gpu and little storage.1 point -
Laptop predicament
barefoot reacted to Don Kotlos for a topic
The quality of the monitors varies a lot between different models. Matte screes are always preferred for color sensitive work such as grading. You can find tests on this site : http://www.notebookcheck.net/ There are quite few thin and light latops (Dell XPS 15, Asus g501jw, Gigabyte P34/35 v2/v3,...). But if you insist on a latop I would suggest you look into workstation models such as the lenovo P50/P70, Dell M4800/M6800, HP Zbook 15/17 (dreamcolor). These are meant for heavy work and will not sound like a turbine while thermal throttling when you want to process a 4K video (Macbook inlcuded) . Plus they allow for much more RAM and expandable storage. About the prices you can always find very nice deals at ebay.1 point -

Huge Olympus update, E-M1 getting 24/25p, E-M5 II get flat profile
sgreszcz reacted to TheRenaissanceMan for a topic
I don't know about that, Andrew. I think enough of us are hung up on 5-axis IBIS to pick up an E-M1 or E-M5II just for handheld/moving shots. And event shooting? Imagine being able to walk around a wedding with nothing but the camera and an Olympus 45mm and get beautiful, stable footage. You can always use a Panasonic for the more demanding wide shots.1 point -
I don't know where the Red Raven fits. It's cheaper than the C300 Mark II but the fs7 is cheaper too and the ursa mini 4.6k is on the horizon and well...it takes away some from people wanting their red weapon - the crop factor is random - again, just wait till the camera is out and in people's hands. Until then its worthless. And still, the red one mx is still the best red deal to have. Because it exists and it works.1 point

I find if I show up with lights, a pro-looking set of lenses, a rig, and a mattebox, they don't look twice at the name on my camera--especially once they see the final product. YMMV. You could also look at a set of Contax Zeiss glass. If you're okay with f/2 or 2.8 lenses, you can pick up a basic set fairly inexpensively. The thing to watch out for with Nikon glass is that the focus rings turn the opposite direction of every other lens manufacturer. It makes it hard to develop muscle memory if you ever use anything else, and, personally, drives me bananas. The ones on the Personal-View FAQs? I found those pretty helpful. The Minola Rokkor and Contax Zeiss Survival Guides are also worth looking at if you want the lay of the land.1 point

A7S Mark ii Aps-c Mode?
Rinad Amir reacted to MattH for a topic
Well you could consider selling your 18-35 or keeping it for later and getting some other full frame glass. Or if you really want to use the 18-35 the A7r ii will probably be better for you: Aps-c mode is 4k dowsampled from a full apsc sensor readout. For this you would want something like the metabones e-mount to ef adapter (not speedbooster).1 point -

URSA Mini vs Raven (Updated with Raven 4.5K)
Xavier Plagaro Mussard reacted to neosushi for a topic
It's funny how people act surprised... This is RED we are talking about... We all said right after they announced it that their 4K couldn't be for all. It's for people who want to shoot film quality images on a budget. Yes a cinema camera (its still a dragon sensor seriously guys !!!). Now the real problem I see is the crop factor. Aside from that you still get a Dragon sensor 4K RAW 120fps camera for 10k. Now I don't think that everyone needs a Dragon Sensor, but prior from this announcement you couldn't get a dragon sensor for less than what ? 30k - 40k ? I think Red enlarged the choice for us. But if people thought they were going to have a run"gun camera from Red, they would be disappointed I guess1 point -

Indeed. For you non-developers here: It's a whole different world to work with something like Canon Firmware & Magic Lantern where you actually have a nice code environment with a higher level programming language like C on ARM instruction sets vs working with Nikon firmware where there's no such development environment publicly available - and you must patch hacks in binary. Nikonhacker project's slow progress isn't due to the developers being bad at development (I believe some members of Magic Lantern project are also contributing to Nikonhacker project ). Nikonhacker work on proprietary custom hardware that isn't as common & well documented as ARM - and have no proper higher level development environment. It doesn't matter how good of a developer you are and how much experience you have - something with less documentation (or as in this case, no public documentation at all) and without a proper development environment will always take longer to work with.1 point

Having to go to the REDuser forum for info makes me cry! So many posts along the lines of "C300 mk II D.O.A" and "I would hate to be Sony/Blackmagic/Canon now" ad nauseum. Whatever you may think of prosumer cams like the C300 and FS7, you can shoot all day on a couple of batteries and some cheap(er) media. I like REDs cameras, but I really detest that place.1 point
