Sony A7sii review by TCSTV

OK, to keep confusion to minimum: The opening shots from 0:45 to 11:35 are all shot on the A7S II. The talking heads before and after that are shot on the original A7S. This might not be an ideally shot and graded video, but we only had production model A7SIIs for the one night and a half hour in the morning. Editing was obviously hurried as cameras are shipping right now. While it may not be our best looking work, I tested everything pretty extensively to make sure all our findings were accurate.4 points -

I just did. Here is what Charlie Chicken thinks, "Thank you for asking me. I think Germany as a country is setting a good example to the rest of Europe by welcoming in immigrants. However it could also be to recover for their treatment of Greece, with an austerity plan that has been disasterous for that country. I think maybe it's time for the EU to end. It was an interesting experiment but ultimately the bond between countries is not where it should be and unlike the USA where each state ultimately tries to help the others, as there seems to be years of hostility built up, also perhaps echoing the paranoia of World War II, especially that of Germany's history in the way, teaming up with Italy and occupying France and bombing the UK. I don't know if what happened less than one hundred years ago is not still part of the struggle between your countries, especially with Germany as the "banking" leaders of the EU. Of course the US had the Civil War and this still affects us, in differences between the North and the South - but I think overall we worked through these differences especially since the North is just as racist as the South. "The underlying tension between nations in Europe combined with the incredibly high unemployment of its people, especially young people, in many European countries may in fact be affecting the moods of its citizens younger people. While I don't know much about you personally Patrick B. Rau, it is possible some of your "online" use of a "swear" word is a result of situational stress and emotion caused by economic unshakiness. But maybe not - who knows - online, we are all just reflections and projections of whom we really are. Woof."3 points -
I take it back. Looking at other clips, the RS still looks shitty. Sony were lying when they said the sensor reads out 120 times a second. If they meant in crop mode then they should have specified the crop. Otherwise you could say it has a 0.001ms readout speed then turn round and say its only for a crop of 1 pixel.2 points

My comment before was probably a little harsh, I really liked the A7RII review you guys put together and look forward to seeing what you guys think after spending some more time with it. I've been to some of these press nights before in other industries and they leave you tired and exhausted so appreciate you guys managing to put together a review.2 points -

Still using my mark iii for color...I went back to it after having the a7s for a while. Still not convinced I could be as confident every time I shoot as I am with the 5d raw. I've never had one instance of bad color with it.2 points -
As I predicted, the rolling shutter skew has been greatly reduced. No way that is 30ms like the original A7s. Has to be at most 8.3 milliseconds mathematically. It looks even less. I'm still dubious about the overall look though.2 points

I appreciate the kind words! I'm hoping this episode does really well and we can leverage it to do more traveling for TCSTV. I need to come up with a good hook for the Best and Worst of 2015. Expectations are high.2 points -
Just walked into Samy's on La Brea and picked up an A7S II and 24-240 FE lens. While it looked like they have a bunch in stock, there may be a waiting list, so perhaps call before heading over. The A7SII+24-240 lens replaces the A7S+18-200 as our small run & gun camera. The new combo is quite a bit heavier and the zoom ring is very stiff- not clear yet if it will get smoother with some use. The body did start to get hot after a few minutes of 4K use- haven't used it long enough to check for overheating. Quick 4K test in PP CC: colors in Slog3+SGamute3.cine looked better than SLog2 on A7S, though I did see some banding on a gray background. 4K resolution and detail: will need to do more tests however it appears the GH4 provides more actual resolution. Additionally, PP CC can play 4K GH4 in real-time while the A7SII 4K required 1/2 resolution (12 Core Mac Pro, 980ti GTX, dual 4K displays). Stills- skintone colors appear a bit better than A7S (non scientific test). Will test MB IV adapter with Canon L lenses next.1 point

In the Sushi video, to the naked eye everything had a red cast: the A7S II did a pretty good job in mixed lighting- incandescent + red neon + iPhone LED. Other footage shot in the studio (sorry can't share it) looks really good under very high quality LED light (Aputure Light Storm, 95+ CRI). While still not up to Canon, the skin tones are pretty good.1 point

Andrew thanks for the text. I think about slow mo. Can You upload on vimeo a few videos to download ? I saw in a few movies about a7s that slow mo has a big bump of noise. How is Your fell about it ? Can You record video with high iso in slow mo ? Are You sure that is 2.2 crop ? Is so big wide angle is hard in this mode. Thanks !1 point

So I just bought an Iscomorphot 8 / 2x
Flynn reacted to Bioskop.Inc for a topic
Try using autofocus, it might work. The problem that you'll find with one of these focus through lenses (Iscomorphot S8/x2 or Isco Widescreen 2000) is that you'll have to stop down to be able to focus properly & even then it won't be as sharp as keeping to the adaptors base/optimum/recommended focus point (4m for the S8/x2 & 5m for the WS 2000). So all of this combined, might not be v.easy for your cameras autofocus to function properly & you might find that your camera ends up in a spiral of death constant search for optimum sharpness. Also, its not really recommended to use autofocus, manual gives you proper control. But let us know, it'll be interesting to see some results.1 point -

take note that the daytime shots were captured with the A7S. The nighttime shots, slow-mo and SLog3 examples were A7S II.1 point -
PP8 (Slog3+SGamut.cine) looks pretty good straight out of camera with PP CC ARRI LUTs (Lumetri panel). Pretty nice skintones without any tweaking. Nice to see Sony making good progress with color! Regarding 4K playback, I transcoded to QuickTime and PP CC (latest version) still can't play in real-time full resolution (from an SSD). This is the first time working with 4K on Windows 10 and the GTX 980ti (previously used Win7 with GTX 770). Properly coded GPU decoding and processing should be able to handle 4K like butter. Will try on OSX. Examining the 100Mbps XAVC-S 4K up close: there's quite a bit of macroblocking (400%). Thought perhaps it was a PP issue, not performing deblocking (an advanced feature of H.264 decoders, which blends out macroblock edges). ffmpeg transcode didn't do any better. Macroblocking wasn't as visible with PP6 vs. PP8+Lumetri LUT. Not visible when not pixel peeping, just checking encoder/decoder quality. Using an external recorder is still a good option for those wanting max quality.1 point

Hands down best quality double-focus anamorphic?
Hans Punk reacted to Bioskop.Inc for a topic
Wow! I'd like to see someone using a 35mm with the Kowa on a FF camera too, cause I can't use a 35mm with the Kowa on my 60D! I guess that enny is using RAW in 4:3 mode on his 5D3. The Bollex Moller is a lovely lens, but is x1.5. Whilst the Kowa is a x2, which is the best stretch for an anamorphic (IMHO).1 point -

I have a top spec MacBook with the GeForce 750 1Gb and I edit LX100 4K files on it with no problem at all in FCP X. Of course, not everything is real-time and I have the viewer set to best-performance, not best quality. Color correction and some effects work realtime or enough fps. Multicam 4K I haven't tried and probably won't work smoothly! With Macs you must get the cheapest or the more expensive. Sell it with some warranty time left and you will probably loose less than 1000$!!!1 point -
According to another blog, the Coelux currently costs £40,000 to buy and around £5,000 for installation. Hopefully the technology (along with the price) is adopted for the masses.1 point

I was wrong it's only 60 bucks a year hah. I'm sure you wouldn't be able access your files and they reserve the right to delete them if you don't pay. I'd just recommend setting up the automatic payments and you're good to go. It's kind of an unbelievable deal imo.1 point
