URSA Mini vs Raven (Updated with Raven 4.5K)
IronFilm and 2 others reacted to Oliver Daniel for a topic
REDUser threads are cringeworthy: 1st page then stopped.... "Ursa just got URSED!" It's like some of them are in an army - "our country is better than yours" kinda vibes. It fits with the product naming scheme I guess. That said, RED cameras are awesome.3 points -
Sony A7RII 4k versus NX1 4K
kidzrevil and 2 others reacted to ricardo_sousa11 for a topic
The NX1 video frames do look a lot like still photographs, heres a few shots I took from 4k video - http://imgur.com/a/CCBXl - it is so outstanding how sharp the image is (please note this image has grading, still WIP, but its not raw image). What I've realised too is, the camera handles bokeh differently between 4k video and 1080p video (or even photography), making it look like FF almost when in 4k. You can make the footage look as filmic or digital as you want. **The reason why theres very few actual good footage of the NX1 is due to the marketing structure. Many people bought it and use the kit lens and are amazed at the "out of focus background", this is a pro-sumer camera, that was marketed as a "bigger" higher end point n' shoot, besides its a very very new camera and system, very ew people actually risk going for it, considering lens selection and completely new system. Let me share with you a few great examples of how amazing this camera is :3 points -
Full size HDMI and dual SD slots is so sweet, wish more cameras did this. Heck, if the GH5 did this I'd be stoked!2 points

I love the D750. It's the Goldilocks of all FF DSLR's I think. Does everything well. I tried the Flaat 11 profile a few times with it and it seems to work well. https://vimeo.com/124688710 The new stabilised Tamron primes may be a nice match with the D750 for hand held video. Could be a nice combo.2 points

New Samsung NX1 short "The Curator"
Xavier Plagaro Mussard reacted to D.M.Weiss for a topic
Cool. We actually shot a feature film with the NX1 and the SLR Magic anamorphic adapters. Here is a link to the trailer: https://vimeo.com/138589715 I hope the rumors about Samsung getting rid of the NX camera division are untrue. I love the imagery of the NX1.1 point -
URSA Mini vs Raven (Updated with Raven 4.5K)
Jonesy Jones reacted to John Emery for a topic
Both look great! I just hate the idea of paying for basic extras like the audio module (XLRs) on the red. If it was 10000 with everything (like the red one), I would think about it... but for around 7000€ you can have a completely usable Ursa mini 4.6k... I'm going for the URSA1 point -

Thoughts? Did a quick regrade (and slight re-edit) of a short that we shot over a weekend a few weeks back. Seems useful to me but I am I am new to this game So thoughts and pointers appreciated.1 point -
Your RX10 II experiences?
jgharding reacted to Oliver Daniel for a topic
Completed another shoot exclusively on the RX10 II yesterday. I don't know what it is, but I feel really strange when I use the camera. I just don't feel right in myself, even though the results are fine. My next personal assessment is that I find the sensor size hard to get used to - and the fixed lens offers great range but nothing else. Maybe that's it. Artistically, I'm not connecting with the footage because it's more creatively limiting on this sensor and the fixed lens. Probably. As for picture profiles, I don't have any on hand but I know I've used popular user created A7S Slog2 profiles and tweaked a bit. Seems to suffer a lot with purple noise. Also, I share your feelings with the whole not so good colour/great HFR conundrum. I only use Sony for that. If Canon had great HFR, I'd be Canon all over.1 point -

THANK YOU FOR UNDERSCORING THE IRONY OF MY POLL AGOLEX1 point -
And you know, maybe I'll just pull a Simon Cade and invest in other things and keep shooting the hell out of the d5200. I could use some good lights, I'm gonna upgrade my audio gear soon, and I still need some basic film making gear such as sliders. (Bought a cheap one for $150 on Amazon when I first started and let's just say I won't be buying the cheap Studio Fx shit anymore )1 point

What "style" of edit is this ?
Xavier Plagaro Mussard reacted to ricardo_sousa11 for a topic
Of course a feature film with this style would be nauseating, but for smaller videos, it indeed an incredible style1 point -
Interesting move by RED... Shame I had to go onto that forum, need to wash the red frenzy from my eyes.1 point

D750 - Still a worthy camera for 1080p?
kaylee reacted to Mattias Burling for a topic
Yah, Flat 11 is so sweet and when grading I again wonder how its possible to get such a quality/mbps ratio. I got an offer of 15% of on the Tamron VC Primes but Im not sure about them. So far I haven't found any examples showing the VC being very effective for video. And since I have really good stabilization in the 24-120/4 I might instead just get a regular 35mm. Have you seen any god examples, because I would love to have a stabilized 35mm? Glad you subbed Yeah the DR is pretty out there. Easily 13 stops, no doubt in my mind. It has two crop modes if I'm not mistaken, Haven't tried yet myself but I might give it ago during the weekend.1 point -

No increase in Y resolution however. Still doing their bit to protect their higher end cameras.1 point -
Sony A7RII 4k versus NX1 4K
Marco Tecno reacted to Liam for a topic
"sony" isn't a professional camera either. colors seem deeper in the nx1 than an A7s (or easier to get to look that way) and great skins. and I'll usually prefer crushed blacks in a final grade and don't need.. all the highlight detail anyway. plus the rolloff is really great too. the 5D is great, but not an example of a resolution/dynamic range king1 point -
D750 - Still a worthy camera for 1080p?
Mattias Burling reacted to kaylee for a topic
~subscribed! 2.5k for 1080p on youtube i like it yeah this is a rad camera. my friend has one, got to use it for a bit – loved the build quality, just fit in my hand really really well, surprisingly lightweight tho? and super for stills anyway the bitrate vs results makes zero sense what the heck is going on there lol also, @Mattias Burling - this is crazy~! wow??!?1 point -

Mattias, I've come across your YouTube channel - Great stuff! Between Andrew's review and a few finds on YouTube I think I'm sold. Search on Youtube for GUSTL (or just search d750 short film). Solid looking images. And I can use my existing lens no issues with metabones and what not...1 point -

What "style" of edit is this ?
Xavier Plagaro Mussard reacted to ricardo_sousa11 for a topic
I wasnt refering to the individual techniques he used (such as hyperlapse), but the actual "stiching", the transitions, he seems to use fast blur with sideways/up&down transitions, and masks, speed ups/downs. I do realise this style cant be used for everything, but for some stuff it really makes it look "magical".1 point -
It's quite a 90s style edit with flinchy jump cuts, but these cuts are often facilitated her by modern things, such as stabilised timelapse and so on. So modern retro. a very up to date post-modern classical soundtrack (like Einaudi, Max Richter, Clint Mansell etc, the music is almost interchangeable with them) As a matter of personal taste this kind of thing gives me a bit of a headache as most of the images don't get time to breathe, but that's just me. Like most such films the music does most of the work, if you put a different track on it wouldn't work so well, so to make your own start with a similar arpeggio or ostinato based track by Einaudi, Clint Mansell or Max Richter and cut away! EDIT: Yes it is Einaudi i checked on Vimeo. PS not a criticism of their music, more an observation of a genre style. I've seen Richter in concert twice!1 point

Your 24-70 lens WILL NOT match the resolving capabilities of the samsung lens. It just won't. The 24-70 will have been designed with an approximate 30lp/mm onto a full frame sensor. full frame capability of the lens 30linesx2pairs x 36mm(sensor width) = 2160pixels (wide) optical resolution onto full frame apsc capability of the lens 30x2pairs x 24mm = 1440pixels (wide) = not even full hd resolution Add to this that the lens is marketed as a digital and film lens meaning it's not optimised for either, its a middle ground. It was also developed before 35mm sensors were any greater than 4mpx. It's old technology. Red strip or not, it aint a stellar lens by modern standards The samsung will likely have been designed to 60lp/mm meaning for the same image area 60x2 x 24mm = 2880pixels wide. immediately the lens is delivering 2x the optical resolution onto the same image width, and 4x the optical resolution onto the total area - That's a big difference. The samsung will have been developed to cater to the 28mpx sensor of the nx1 - some of the most tightly packed pixels on any sensor yet. It'll also have been designed specifically to be APO corrected for the thickness of the sensor cover glass. I'm not saying the A7R2 matches the overall res of the nx1 - it's clear the nx1 is doing great things. but when attempting such a test you should always use the same lens, or at the very least, if one camera is being used with a lens optimised for it, both lenses should are optimised for each camera. I'm pretty certain that if you;d used the 55mm/1.8 on the a7r2 the results would be closer.1 point

What "style" of edit is this ?
Xavier Plagaro Mussard reacted to Chris Oh for a topic
I can't answer your question, but if you like this style, also search for videos by Brandon Li. Here's a short inteview that talks about how he creates his videos: http://www.mirrorlessons.com/2015/10/02/going-nomad-to-film-the-world-with-the-sony-a7s-an-interview-with-filmmaker-brandon-li/1 point -
Has anyone taken into account that maybe this camera is a bit bigger because it has dual SD slots and full size HDMI, and maybe they just chose not to have any overheating issues. Also their lenses for this system are quite big and heavy, so I don't believe that photographers would be very happy with a heavy standard zoom on a tiny body.1 point

People who are sympathising with the AL-Jazeers stories have obviously not been reading about labour conditions all over the world, and at most other stores. Apple Stores all over China have pathetic working conditions, and a lot of meat stores, electronics, online retailers, and super-stores in the US have terrible working conditions. Unlike Bangladesh where entire building are crumbling, all over the world, working conditions of the labour class isn't excellent. I cannot say with precision, but, I guess except Japan and a few Scandinavian countries, everywhere else, workers are treated like rodents. Why just stores, wasn't it recently that workers complained about the working conditions on Alfonso Cuarón's next film (I hope it was his film, that was in question), where extreme working conditions, with lousy food and extremely long work hours were making many crew members go literally berserk. This is in no way stating that, if it exists thus at B&H, it is justified, and fine because everyone else is doing it. I believe Al Jazeera should first outline working conditions in atleast 30 super stores, and atleast 20 other online electronics retailers, to be able to lend some level of credibility to their story. Otherwise it looks like some low quality political propaganda.1 point

I'm sorry but, to me, that seemed extremely staged. One guy looked like he was reading from cue cards. The fact remains that workers have the right to unionize, I just feel the timing of the expose' and the union organization is a little too convenient. I hope it works out for all parties. But to be honest, there is not enough evidence yet that will keep me from shopping there.1 point
-
This is union muckraking, and I'm sorry, but anyone who doesn't see through this is stupid. This is the 21st Century US, not 40's Nazi Germany or behind the Iron Curtain. If the job is less than safe, then quit. They're not being forced to work there. Why weren't they reported to OSHA for their allegedly poor safety practices?I'm sorry but the timing of this expose' and the timing of the unionization of the BH workers are just too close to be called coincidental. And this nonsense that they aren't allowed to go to the bathroom... If you work a job that won't let you poop when you have to poop and you comply to their no pooping on the job policy... Then... You probably deserve to work that job. EDIT: I apologize "stupid" is a strong word, I should have said misinformed or naive.1 point

Regarding the saying that they didn't mention this is a Jewish owned store, Aljazeera do that it in a much smarter way, they just put a front photo with a Jew standing there. Bang, target accomplished.1 point
