1. Hey all, Just shot/edited my first piece. I'm coming from a radio producer/documentarian background and have produced some stuff for television, but this is the first thing I've shot and edited myself. It was done strictly as a learning exercise. I've dabbling in video in my spare time (which has been scarce and so painstakingly slow) for about 5 years now and have learned a lot on these boards. I definitely appreciate the information and experiences shared here and would greatly appreciate any constructive criticisms and advice. Password: Malvern I did basic color correction as I'm just beginning to learn how to grade, and honestly thought it looked decent until it got uploaded to vimeo. So any vimeo tips would be appreciated as well. Here's a run down of the stuff I used: Camera: 5D MKII (ML Raw) Lens: Canon 28mm F/2.8, Canon 100mm F/2.8 L, Canon 80-200mm F/2.8 L Audio: Sennheiser G3, Marantz PMD661 Lights: F&V R-300, Lowel Rifa Ex-88 Conversion: MLVMystic Edit/Basic Color Correction: Da Vinci Resolve 11 Lite Export: ProRes 422 HQ (resized to HD 1920x1080) Password: Malvern
People I Know - Kevin Jones (No Grade) from Ty Harper on Vimeo.

  3. But that is actually an advantage of the Blade. You can get faster SSDs with larger capacity much much cheaper than SDXC. For example a 128gb Sandisk Extreme Pro is $100. A 120gb SSD is less than $50 ...

    Highest filmmaker honor?

If I could collect a dozen of the 1000-krona bills, I'd get an NX1. It's all about the "Hammarskjölds!"

  7. I have always stated that NX cameras should be hacked, given the fact they are based on Linux and have partially open source fw. Of course the skills required are high. NX1 has great potential. Just think if they could unlock 6.5k video at high bitrate, perhaps in 4:2:2 or even raw. Remember that with the lexar 2000x sd card the nx1 can save 5-6 raw+jpg/sec, that's about (or even more than) 200MB/sec (1.6Gbit/sec). So the internal i/o is there to be filled by video!

  8. Out of the blue Blackmagic sent me the new Video Assist, which isn't quite yet shipping at B&H (pre-orders are available) or CVP but will be soon. Here is an early look at the device and what it can do. Read the full article

  9. Is it just me that feels like we need a moratorium on using the phrase "nifty fifty"? For some reason, it makes my skin crawl a bit. Maybe because the OES 50 isn't all that nifty?

  10. I hope they bring a true successor to the BMPCC... Usually I'd be fan of something modular. But not if it makes things clunky. This doesn't feel much run-n-gun.

  11. But it offers waveform, peaking, false color, zebras, histogam, punch in, and record triggering. None of which the Video Assist offers. I'd take that over 60p any day.

  12. You have to find a lens with a larger front diameter, these give less swirley bokeh.

  13. Well that's very limiting. I know this is a budget device but why wouldn't they allow down scaling 4K from the HDMI? Right now even at double the money, the PIX-E5H looks like a better investment.

  14. Wow! That's spectacular currency!

  17. Actually the NX1 nicely downscales the 4K internally to 1080p for the HDMI output. I've tried recording that with the Video Assist and it is pretty decent quality. Better than the internal 1080p! So get the Video Assist if you need better quality 1080p from your NX1 and can't be bothered with 4K or H.265. Also the 1D C's 4K downscaled in-camera to feed the clean HDMI output is rather lovely. 1.3x crop of sensor like the 4K, but without the massive file sizes or MJPEG to contend with Video Assist good for capturing that. It is VERY sharp and clean with very little weirdness going on. Gradients are very smooth too. Looks like 10bit luma. I also have a Nikon D5500 at the moment but not sure about that, it may have to go back because the HDMI seems stuck at 29.97p or needs pulldown from interlaced signal. Can't get native 24p or 25p out of it. Review of the D5500 is in the works by the way, aside from that issue it is rather nice for a cheap 1080p camera. Very small and light for a DSLR.

  18. nitsan is cool. He really likes the pixapro 100d led lights, which coincidentally are rebadged and sold by neewer in the states. I'm wary of the cri of them but nitsans videos look nice.

    Cheapest Full Frame - Photos

Depends on what kind of video you want to do. The d800 is as bad for video as the canon 5d mkii, maybe slightly better in resolution and a little bit worse in highlight rolloff and "motion cadence". I think if you just want the fullframe look, get a speedbooster on some mirrorless aps-c camera. This would be the cheapest option, no AF. http://www.eoshd.com/comments/topic/18504-canon-eos-m-focal-reducer-fullframe-raw-for-300/

    Cheapest Full Frame - Photos

wouldn't like speedboosting an nex camera probably be the cheapest option and have decent video? maybe not much cheaper if you have a good speedbooster on it, plus no match for 5D raw or any sort of autofocus or ergonomics, but just a thought

  24. If you didnt already have Canon glass I would recommend the D600 since it has a superior image sensor to the 5D2. Better DR, low light, etc.

  25. 5dii inferior sensor, ML raw send you with card way more than 800euros, OVF, huge body, AF not at all stellar. no way i would go for that. A7 all the way if were talking pictures, d750 if video

  26. Don't belittle Lukas' crucial foundation work. He did most of the heavy lifting for those that followed, and he did it only May of last year. Obviously, the NX hacks moved farther because of his work. The Lukas rooting of NX cameras led to this work (and this work), which led to the simple work of your boy on DP Review disabling the video time/file-size limit. Your boy acknowledges the immediate upstream source, and that source acknowledges Lukas. From the comments on Lukas' page, there are evidently others who are also hacking the NX cameras, thanks to him.

  27. Good old Georg Lukas! Once you at at root level, potentially the sky is the limit in terms of the features they (he!) could add. It's a bit like writing software for a jailbroken iPhone... Once you are in and behind all the locked doors they put in place, you can write almost any software imaginable.

  28. AliExpress for example. Today (11.11) is a special day over there too. Gotta love China indeed. Even visited the Hong Kong Electronics Fair and Shenzhen around this time last year, because they just amaze me what things are possible for such low prices. - Though, fair warning, I'd say possibly 90% of the stuff out there is actually that cheap for a reason. Stuff can be good for cheap, if they put in the effort to get it right. Doesn't mean this is always the case. Most of the times it's just something half-assed to look the bizz, but in all actuality is far from it. So you got to know your stuff/read into it or be adventurous and trust your own good judgement. I'm a fan of Chinese brands though. It usually means something if they're willing to put their name on it. But still, for stuff like batteries or so, better buy something legit (don't have to buy original, but you can get a good B-brand (I like Patona for example)) than to fry your expensive gear looking to save a few pennies (almost lost my GH2 on a Chinese DSTE battery).

  29. Would be quite funny if the NX1 is discontinued, then a hack makes it the dream camera... They will be like gold dust.

  31. +1 Nikon F mount can be physically adapted to almost any camera, but keep in mind that the electronics (AF, image stabilization) may not work.

  32. yes i agree but sharpness is a though one to messure because the sensor changes it so much. The vingetting, chromatic aberation and distortion is equal on all sensors.

  33. So, I've just shot a quick test using my GH4 and a Ninja Star. The test is to check the differences between the internal HDMI-based 4K downscale and the 4K -> 1080p downscale using the 4:2:0 8-bit H264 as a source. The images can be downloaded in full resolution here: https://www.dropbox.com/s/e6o06zoowk7z5fh/GH4%20Test%20Images.zip?dl=0 See the attached files for some side-by-side 100% comparisons. Images are from the GH4 (set to a gently tweaked CineV, 4K 100M 24p - really 23.98, 180 degree shutter, Sigma 18-35 at f/2.8 on a Speedbooster at ISO 400, auto white balance, tungsten lighting). They were captured to 1080p using the following workflows: Clip 1: Recorded in GH4 (4:2:0 8-bit H.264 4K) then downscaled in Red Giant Bulletproof to 1080p ProRes 422HQ. Clip 2: Recorded in GH4 (4:2:0 8-bit H.264 4K) then downscaled in FCPX by adding to a 1080p timeline. Clip 3: GH4 HDMI out (4:2:2 8-bit) to Atomos Ninja Star (ProRes 422HQ) Clip 4: GH4 HDMI out (4:2:2 10-bit) to Atomos Ninja Star (ProRes 422HQ) All clips were then placed in an FCPX timeline (Clip 2 was placed as a 4K file), then a frame was exported as a TIFF uncompressed file at full 1080p resolution. No effects, grading, or anything else was applied. I tried to choose a subject (ColorChecker Passport and tomato, lit just off-axis with a side light accent) that would both provide some sharp edges as well as gentle gradients, and the green/red of the tomato should hopefully accentuate any actual chroma sub-sampling issues that exist. Camera was on a beanbag so please excuse any pixel-level misregistration, I don't have my tripod handy right now. I hope this helps someone.
