1. I just finished a feature in which we used the Pix E5 extensively. For our main cams we had Fs7's with Speedboosters. But we wanted to use a Steadicam Tango which has a weight limit of 5 lbs. So we paired an A7s at the end of the Tango and Pix E5 as the operator's monitor. In short, the Pix E5 is bullet proof. In prep we tested Shoguns but found them too fiddly and power hungry. With the E5 we'd get a couple hours use with (2) NP 970 batteries. Also, their media system is well thought out. Pop out drive, stick it in computer, no intermediate interface. Also, noteworthy, it's at least a stop brighter than the Shogun which helped for brightly lit locations. The downside, no 60p. The interface is pretty simple. Buttons and touch screen. As a reference monitor, it'll take LUTs, display Histo, Waveform, Vectorscope, etc. I bet it becomes a standard "director's" monitor on movie and TV sets as they'll be able to review and que takes without having to summon the VTR guy and do it privately without everyone else watching. The union is going to hate this one.

  2. I've bought the original Surface Pro and the Surface Pro 3, and I have sold both of them. I've love the idea of working with images on a tablet via a stylus, but as of right now, the software isn't there yet. Neither Lightroom nor Photoshop worked very well with a stylus, because the UI wasn't anywhere near usable. Lightroom was getting there with the touch UI for Windows machines with a touch screen, but it wasn't very intuitive, and the Surface Pro 3 wasn't quite fast enough to handle 24 and 36 megapixel files -- the machine would stutter and lag, and that just exacerbated the problems. I was really, really interested in the Surface Book, until I found out the price. I'm super super keen to try the iPad Pro with the Astropad app -- I think that might be the best bet yet for what we both seem to want to do. Ultimately what I really want -- and reading all the reviews, what all the reviewers want too -- is pro apps on the iPad Pro. I also want to be able to plug in a hard drive into the damn thing to copy files into the iPad as quickly as possible!

  3. On lots of forums its popular with a "Picture of your latest purchase" thread. And since this is a forum filled with gear junkies and G.A.S, I thought it could be fun to have one for photo/video related stuff. IMO its enjoyable and gives a glimpse into others lives. The point is to show a picture with or without comments on why, price etc. Not a product picture, it should be taken by you of the actual unit. Its not a thread for debate or questioning why people bought what they did. I can start and we will see if it sticks. $25 and fully automatic. Even AF.

  4. I use an Intious 5 for video editing. Once I got used to it, a mouse is just a pain.

  5. Hey all, Just shot/edited my first piece. I'm coming from a radio producer/documentarian background and have produced some stuff for television, but this is the first thing I've shot and edited myself. It was done strictly as a learning exercise. I've dabbling in video in my spare time (which has been scarce and so painstakingly slow) for about 5 years now and have learned a lot on these boards. I definitely appreciate the information and experiences shared here and would greatly appreciate any constructive criticisms and advice. Password: Malvern I did basic color correction as I'm just beginning to learn how to grade, and honestly thought it looked decent until it got uploaded to vimeo. So any vimeo tips would be appreciated as well. Here's a run down of the stuff I used: Camera: 5D MKII (ML Raw) Lens: Canon 28mm F/2.8, Canon 100mm F/2.8 L, Canon 80-200mm F/2.8 L Audio: Sennheiser G3, Marantz PMD661 Lights: F&V R-300, Lowel Rifa Ex-88 Conversion: MLVMystic Edit/Basic Color Correction: Da Vinci Resolve 11 Lite Export: ProRes 422 HQ (resized to HD 1920x1080) Password: Malvern
People I Know - Kevin Jones (No Grade) from Ty Harper on Vimeo.

    FS5/FS7 internal raw?

I wish I could help you mercer but I am not an experienced RAW video shooter. Just had some fun (and plenty of dropped frames...) with a BMPCC for few months and that's it... Magic lantern forums (and the fastest cards ) are your best bet.

  7. In case you were replying to my other comment, then specs guaranty what a card can do. When you are going out of spec then you have to run tests on your own to make sure each card is up to the task and I doubt many professionals have the time. Even in the case cards run at higher write speeds than what they are spec'ed for, you can still have dropped frames depending on the state of the card, how full it is, how old it is, what batch it is etc. That is why there are SD specs so you know what a card can consistently do and what it cannot do ... Anyways, I am sure professionals can use whatever they can to do the job and that might include shooting RAW with BMPCC or even 5Diii, but if I was one and wanted to shoot 4K RAW for paying jobs, I would invest in an Ursa mini instead.

  8. a camera <maybe> "failing" in this market (which there's a thread here devoted to being pissed about it) means that it was a bad product? better cameras have been discontinued.

  9. Some older light sources using low frequency ballasts will flicker no matter what you do (unless you can change the frame rate to jibe with the light's output frequency). There still remain fluorescents, sodium vapor, mercury vapor, HMI (magnetic ballast) that are driven by such low frequency ballasts. LED sources are also sometimes driven at lower frequencies and cause flicker.

  10. hi mercer, each stage of the leg slides out smoothly under their own weight. I don't have to apply any pressure after unlocking each stage. gravity does all the work. this is with the three-legged base attached which adds a little weight though. EDIT: just read your follow-up. thanks for the insight. i'll be mindful about how I let the legs extend.

  11. Yup. But to be fair. Mitch from Planet5D came across it already during NAB, I believe they had a booth and showed footage and everything; he was impressed. It wasn't so much a mere concept by the time the Kickstarter went online. They had already figured out what they were going to do hardware-wise, and haven't made any changes (I was terrified for the display quality... rightfully so). When they had the money they put focus on tooling and production of the cameras, the soft-/firmware side of things pushed forward till it was in the user's hands. Interesting approach. It's new and buggy, so I'll have some playtime with it and hopefully firmware can over time make it a somewhat reliable camera. That look! 'You better put me in the end credits!'

  14. I brought this up in another thread. I thought it was just due to me over saturating the S-log-3 footage due to my inexperience with it.

  15. I like it very much. No doubt I would have given the same answer if I had choosen the VA or the Q7+ as it's my first recorder ever. They all record 10 bit prores up to HQ and beyond (E5/E7 (4444XQ), 7Q+(raw)). I'm planning to combine my footage with my 3D work, hence I choose for a recorder that can deliver 4K in 10 bit Prores ...but for anything else I would be happy with the 'UHD Down Convert' from the GH4 ...it's that good and saves a lot of space . Talking about space I really like the concept of the mSata speed drives on the Pix-E's, they are great, no hassle what so ever, just like a normal usb thumb drive, only faster. Oh and you don't have to use the monitor, you can just use it as a recorder. The Pix-E's let you create and save profiles. I made one with a black screen. Attache a luggage strap to one of the mounts and hang it around your neck/shoulder like a bag. HDMI cable to the camera and no one notices the differences ...for low profile shooting. Btw 1080 straight from the GH4 to any recorder is not a good idea, very soft compared to 4K or UHD DownConvert.

  16. It sounds very similar to the Apertus Axiom pitch. It would be really cool if these guys had a trick up their sleeves, I'm all for the small guys shaking up the industry!

  17. Just wanted to let everyone know that I've rented a Blackmagic Pocket Cam for the next 10 days which *should* mean the Micro will ship any day now -- because that's how these things work.

  18. I have a great idea. Why don't we used the English definition of the word indistinguishable. It will really help readers out. OK we get it. You prefer the A7R II. Moving on! Next question!

  19. True, although I didn't see any Nikon-NX adapters on B&H that offer aperture control. However, this one on eBay seams to be the one! |http://www.ebay.com/itm/Nikon-G-AFS-Lens-to-Samsung-NX1-NX3000-NX300M-NX300-NX-Adapter-Aperture-Control-/221804455384?hash=item33a49365d8:g:xf4AAOSwEeFVI4Zo

  20. Indistinguishable is a term I wouldn't use personally speaking. Download the original file. The aliasing is a concern for me. They are the same price so if you want FF 4K why cripple yourself? Forgetting the fantastic 42MP stills for a moment, bearing in mind both for video are roughly the same price, A7S II even a bit cheaper and with the bonus of 1080p 120fps), you'd have to really want that reduced rolling shutter (which you can fix trivially in post anyway) to put up with the aliasing.
