  3. I built a set of vintage Leica R's this year -- 28mm, 35mm, 50mm, 90mm, 135mm. Not planning on using anything else except an occasional zoom for a long time. Here are a couple pics of the set from before I added the 28.

  4. I think it also make sense when we call our camera/sensor size: I film in Full Format (5d) and after testing a lot of lenses, especially primes, I came back again to the Canon 24-70mm/2,8 L MKI as my main lens! In the end it has beaten all of my other lenses in case of "character" and color rendition! But under special circumstances I love several Minolta lenses, (modified to EF mount): Minolta Rokkor MD 45mm 1:2 - a 30,-€ lens with a beautiful color - and 3d performance! Also the Minolta MC 35mm 1,8 HH (excellent sharpness, very 3d-ish, but colors not as good as the 24-70, too blue, too magenta). The Minolta MD 24mm 1:2,8 (Collaboration with Leica) - a ultra sharp and clean 24mm wide angle lens on FF! Nikkor 85mm f2 ai - simply a nice, sharp and affordable lens. Nikkor ai/ai-s lenses always surprised me. They innately deliver a very special cinematic image! I want to have more of it, so I am looking forward to further recommendations... Here a quick test of the Minolta 45mm (f2 is very ordinary, but from 2,8 it shines:)

  5. I imagine most are interested in seeing footage shot from the 5 axis stabilizer you claim to have created, not another 3 axis model. Notice I said from... you need to show the gimbal in action and the resulting unaltered footage. If you can't show this then pack up and go home.

    Sirui Monopod Review

One day last week I was reading a post about the Blackmagic Micro Cinema Camera, when I read a comment by @Zak Forsman regarding the Sirui video monopod. It was perfect timing because I was in the middle of searching for a good monopod. I had narrowed my choices down to a model by a company name Cinetree and a Manfrotto model. I had heard of Sirui but never read any reviews on it. Zak gave it a glowing recommendation, so I headed over to eBay to check it out. Luckily, I found a "New Other" model for sale at a 30% discount... Sold. The monopod arrived 2 or 3 days later and I was immediately impressed with the build quality and how lightweight it was. The fluid pan function is butter smooth and the tilting, swivel base is just as smooth as the panning. The built in foldable feet are sturdy. But when I extended the legs, the top and bottom section was tight, I could barely extend them. I figured that this is why it was sold as new other... it was probably a return. I, immediately, went over to Amazon and read some reviews and the tight leg seems to be a common flaw of this unit. Apparently, when the sections of the leg are extended with a lot of force, the female metal end digs into the male plastic guide cap and scrapes off shavings of plastic, the leg gets clogged and it becomes very tight to open and close. Some buyers received their monopod that way, others had the issue occur over time and others never had a problem at all. I had two options, pack it up and return it, or take it apart and fix it. Since every other aspect of the monopod: the price, the fluid pan, the swivel, tilting base and oversized feet were exactly what I've been looking for, I chose the latter... take it apart and clean it. In less than 10 minutes, I had the monopod sections apart, cleaned, relubricated, with WD-40, and reassembled. It works just as new. Perfect. I attached a video of some clips I took yesterday down the shore. After about a half dozen cups of coffee and a half a pack of cigarettes... I realized I need a little more practice with it... or less vices that cause uncontrollable arm spasms. But either way, I am extremely happy with it and it is worth every penny I paid for it. Does it replace a tripod with a good fluid head or a steadicam? No. But for run and gun shooting with a small footprint, it's exactly what I was looking for.

  7. Out of the blue Blackmagic sent me the new Video Assist, which isn't quite yet shipping at B&H (pre-orders are available) or CVP but will be soon. Here is an early look at the device and what it can do. Read the full article

  8. Here's the trailer for a movie I shot last year using an Iscorama/helios/jupiter9/minolta 35mm and FS700 with Blade recorder. It's a no budget, lowbrow, dark comedy. It's no Oscar winner, but it's my first feature film and it's almost ready for distribution(hopefully).

  9. added both SLR Magic Anamorphots. It has been a while! haha. Bold, these charts are awesome, man, so easy to fill in the data and images. Great work indeed!

  10. Vivitar did make a popular 28mm f2.5 lens, probably in the Minolta mount, but that's not the lens I am referring to. This one is a Minolta MC W Rokkor SI 28mm f2.5. Way better than the Vivitar, which isn't a bad lens either but not even in the same league as the Minolta. IMO.

  11. Do it! Comparable video to GH4 with less crop. If on a budget consider getting a cheap Pentax K adapter to add super cheap vintage lenses from eBay (longer focal lengths than the kit lens). You could probably get a few lenses, camera, memory cards, filters, tripod and an extra battery for under £500. Then upgrade in future to the Metabones and better lenses and/or the GH5.

  12. I was all set to get choose between an LX100 or RX100 but swaying towards the G7 now! I previously had a G3 and this looks like a big step up. @Cinegain I thought you typed kittens and was like Lumix Kittens

    Big and optically good?

I am looking for exactly 2x lens for this project. I think of access to cheap soviet lens as of granted, as if the universe is making up for every other aspect of crappy life in post USSR republics. Soviet glass here in Ukraine is cheeeeeeeeeeap. Rectimascope does have decent flares indeed. I am also looking at Meopta Anagon at the moment, seems decent.

  15. You can't go wrong with the Russians as they are full of "flaws" and they look great! Certainly not boring and clinical like a Panasonic lens. I was thinking of adding a Rokinon/Samyang 14mm and 85mm for my "clean" set. How are you finding them? Oddly, they don't sell the Cine DS line here.

  16. Filmpower posted several videos of the Nebula 4000 in action, but exactly zero videos of the Nebula 4200 in action. Something tells me the 5-axis design is a flop and they don't want pre-orders cancelled if they were to post a video. Don't you think that If it worked well, they would have posted several videos already?

  17. Now, someone, please… a decent and affordable flip-up loupe for the VA. I've been looking for something I can use for HDMI, and as a VF for renting BMC cameras.

  18. Yeah, but Zach, '2220 Euro'... you do realize the topic has 'on restricted budget' in the title and is specified to be 800 EUR, right? And even then... a new Nikon D750 is about 1700 pops right here, looks great and is pretty much a champ in lowlight. For that kind of money just forget about tuning (pumping money into) an outdated body that has already been succeeded in the market segment. I like the mentality: 'only advance when you've reached the max of your current camera, but still leaves you wishing for more'. But you take it to the extreme by using an almost ancient camera and giving it hip replacements and a pacemaker. Cosmetic surgery to get those wrinkles under control. But eventually it's going to end up on life support. Maybe time to let go and move on; could be time to stop trying to patch it up one more time. Time is ticking and every day new technology advancements come into this world. They're not here to make your life a hassle, they're here to improve it, open up new creative possibilities. The A7S-series has pushed the lowlight bounderies. It gives filmmakers a new scale of options to explore. Time to embrace stuff like that. I feel like because the T2i is all you really know by some hardcore experience, you've come to love it and accept its image quality. I think you have realistic expectations of the T2i, but that's kinda of a weakness as the bar has been raised so much higher by now and your expectations might not quite be in line with that of people nowadays. Still think other cameras are a way better deal and atleast easier to get some decent results with! And with less time wasted on pushing a camera beyond its limits, you have more time left to figure out other things... we always agree that 'content is king', but doesn't the king belong in a palace rather than some abandoned cabin in the woods. What if Kendy Ty had used a D750 instead of the T2i. Would those videos have been off better or worse? Kinda with araucaria on this one.

  19. Thanks everyone, for the kind words and constructive criticism… in case you're wondering, this movie is not a serious one. It's a ridiculous redneck comedy, so the acting isn't so bad, once you realize how ridiculous it is. I shot it for 10k(actors and locations), doing all of pre and post solo. My wife and I shot the movie. I also had to act in it, because I couldn't afford to pay someone to play my part(redneck in the truck). Sometimes there was no one behind the camera. I hope I can get some help on my next one, which is a lot crazier than this one, but it's hard to find dedicated filmmakers in Sacramento, CA.

There's also the SLR Magic 10mm if you're cool with manual focus. Beautiful lens.

  21. I'd pay to see this at the theatre. looks superb. well done man It sounds like some here don;t quite 'get' the movie. It's not meant to be serious. I see a lot of great humor here - the characters are great - memorable looks to the main guy. The selection of an isocrama and the old russian lenses definitely adds to the authenticity of the piece. the fact that you worked around the limitations of anamorphic is probably why it looks so good. the cut and the offset audio sync is a great touch. Granted I wouldn't have watched if it had not stated that it was shot on a 'rama, but that's the whole point. People shoot anaorphic to separate themselves from the guys shooting on L series and grading to try and make it look like what you;ve achieved. Thanks for sharing this!

  23. I really enjoyed that. It looks cool and was funny and well cut, the trailer made me want to see more. It reminds me of Bad Taste and Brain Dead for some reason.

  24. Recording internally: If your scenes will be lit and you'll have some control over ratios, I would try the Leeming LUT workflow: http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?340808-Leeming-LUT-One-%96-the-best-LUT-for-the-Panasonic-GH4 This uses a specific tweaking of Cine-D, ETTR, and a custom LUT to correct to more pleasing colors. I've only shot with it once so far, very briefly but it seems pretty nice. Otherwise I stick to Natural with most everything at -3 or -4. Recording externally, to 10-bit, I would use V-Log , and experiment with one of the many LUTs available for it. In particular the Film Convert profile seems very nice.
