  1. No matter the camera one shoots on, slog1, 2, 3, clog, BMCfilm, log-c - you need to get it to a point that is a good starting point. So having a LUT takes out a ton of guess work. From there you can really start to tweak. Having a final LUT - a la film print out - is what Juan Melera does - and I think that's a great strategy . But like all things in art, there is no one way to do it. Some people don't use LUTS, some do. And none of it is wrong. People who make fun of people who use LUTS - well, whoopee do. I know of a film editor who just started editing randomly and now he edits giant Hollywood movies. He learned on his own. No film school. He was training to be a chef. There is no right path to get anywhere. Just takes an open mind and a lot of patience and practice. 10,000 hour rule. On that note I know a very prominent Hollywood DP who got his start shooting soft-core videos for Playboy. Do you know who this is?

  2. I didn't either... I suppose it's not too inappropriate in the era of internet BS. By the way... There's loads of new info, clips and photos of the Ursa Mini 4.6K at: http://www.bmcuser.com/showthread.php?15520-Brief-thoughts-and-a-bit-of-footage-from-the-URSA-Mini-4-6K/page3

  3. LUTs have value for sure. That said, getting a good look out of camera is the best place to be. A log gamma for recording is good, along with a nice LUT while previewing/shooting if possible. In post, a simple curve which puts the shadows, midtones (skin), and highlights (filmic) in the right place is all that should be needed to get a great look. This is where Canon and ARRI shine- the colors tend to remain true when adjusting levels in post (by whatever means). After shooting with mostly Sony and Panasonic for a few years, I'm happy to be back shooting with Canon (C300II). Sony has gotten better (the A7SII is decent), and Panasonic isn't too shabby either (GH4). However Canon and ARRI (and perhaps now also Red/Dragon (haven't shot with it yet, but it appears their color science is vastly improved)) take far less time in post to get looking good, specifically skintones. LUTs, especially 3D LUTs, can do surprising things (good and bad) and care must be taken to avoid burning time in post. You used to shoot soft-core for Playboy?

  4. Also guys keep in mind even if you leave the contrast a 0 in vivid you can still raise the black level to keep shadow detail.

  6. I don't know, even with Vimeo compressing the file again, I think 1080p from 4K still looks better than both regular 1080p and straight 4K. But yes, the micro cinema camera looks great... Just wish it had an LCD.

  7. So I took my Halloween night to shoot some f/1.2 Rectilux footage with Canon's 50 and 85mm. I really liked how it turned out, even though I fucked up alignment in some several shots. Also pictures of the rig there. (: http://www.tferradans.com/blog/?p=8292

About contrast, I felt it really impact the skin tones. So you might wanna run some tests wish people, not just landscapes : )

Yeah, I think 0 contrast is the way to go. I have been using -4 saturation, with good results... As is, it looks fairly good out of camera, but I also have a little leeway to adjust. I have not messed with the hue or colors at all. I remember reading some comments on a post a few months ago where a guy was shooting calm and then bumping up his colors. I never tried it, but maybe. Btw, retro and landscape look interesting too, but without a doubt, vivid is best out of box profile. Good find!!!

  10. One possibility is DIS. If you have DIS enabled, you can not select the 120fps mode. You need to make sure DIS is turned off or else it will be grayed out in the menu like you're talking about

  11. LUTs as a starting point are great... Especially if you create a LUT/preset yourself that works for that camera, lighting, skintone etc... I think people get a bit pissy about LUTs because, like effects and filters before hand... Some folk just drop any old LUT on footage and use it as their end point, not start point. This leads to certain looks getting overused and tired.

Yeah, sorry I was actually referring to the test video... Should have written that before the b&w comment. Anyway, according to the description, he shot the NX1Test video with negative 10 contrast. I messed with it a little and found it a tad frail, but definitely grade able... Unsure if you really get anything more out of it though. But it does seem like the color is uniform. I'll post some before and after grabs later.

  14. Don't like the colors, and I usually love BM colors, It looks like some type of Sony DNA is in it... but it could be the grading

  16. All you need is a $150 Chinese monitor off eBay and you're set. Besides, that's still a better screen than the BMPCC comes with.

  17. Love it Tito! Always been curious to see some extreme aperture anamorphic shots with the Kowa B&H. I expected it'd work well and it sure does. Looks perfect.

Here's a grab from a clip I shot earlier in Vivid. I think the adjusted settings are Saturation -4, Sharpness -10, and Contrast 0. I used a Minolta MD 50mm f2, wide open with an ND. I tweaked the curves a little, and then added Fuji rec709 LUT to it at about 50%. Here's another Vivid, but with this one I used the Minolta MD 28mm f/2 lens and the M31 LUT from Impulz at 100%

Huh, just did a quick test of vivid, it certainly looks great out of camera. I'm used to a "vivid" that has horrid colors and contrast cranked to 10.

  20. D750 and BMMCC are my top picks. The GH4/G7/GX8 have excellent 1080/60p as well. But besides the Blackmagic, none of them will be terribly easy to match IMO.

  23. Are you sure? I loved using the 60fps on the A7s. Could it be that you're using a LOG profile and underexposing?

  24. Really? You think Windows 10 Mobile and the 950 are a bright spot? Microsoft has flushed it's mobile OS 3 times in the last 7 years. Twice, Microsoft attacked its own early adopter user and developer base: killing off WP7 (fucking over users) and WP8 (fucking over developers). Both Android and iOS have supported wireless displays and keyboards, with Android also supporting mice. So now they're shipping Windows 10 Mobile. Have you seen how buggy it runs? Have you seen how gutted the core apps are? What the hell has happened since WP7? I don't mind running beta software but even I reverted to WP8 on my 640. I honestly cannot fathom who in Microsoft thinks that W10 Mobile is ready to ship. What's the point of Continuum? What's the use case for someone having to connect their phone to a display, bringing with them a keyboard and mouse? If you need to be productive on the road, you use a laptop. Need to display something on a TV? Like I wrote earlier, iOS and Android support wireless display. Being able to transition an app from device to device sounds useful, but what app do I need to do that? Most of the apps I use sync to my other devices already (tabs from the browser, netflix for videos, google play for my music.) iOS Continuity is a far more useful feature. You sit down next to your computer or laptop and receive all your notifications on the bigger display. No dialogue screens, no physical connections. Just a seamless transition: your computer has phone features. And with regards to the 950. This is what Microsoft did to Nokia? Less impressive camera (since the PureView 808), regressive design (since the Lumia 700), complete lack of colors, and, and asking price of $600 USD for specs you can currently get for $300 or less (far less if you look at the Asus ZenPhone 2 and LG G3). 7 years later: dwindling user base, zero support by other manufacturers and an OS that is almost up to feature parity with iOS and Android. And this rant is from someone who loved the Metro design language. Someone who bought a new Lumia nearly every year because the phones were genuinely awesome, with competitive features and an OS that was on the cusp of becoming great. Someone who acted like a fucking marketer every time he was asked "oh, what phone is that?"

  25. iOS is OSX based. They are very similar with same development tools. Why would you want to run desktop apps on a touch screen device that are designed to be used with a mouse and keyboard? Just get a laptop!! Surface Pro, apart from being very expensive, does it do the desktop apps better than a desktop or the tablet apps better than an iPad Pro? No to both. So what is the point?? There is a reason to have a separate device for your power hungry desktop apps and a separate device for your tablet apps & games. Tablets are not that useful for creative work anyway. Most people use them for internet, email and games. They have not taken off for Photoshop and video editing at all. And Surface Pro does?

  26. They played catch up big time with that one my friend. Apple have had a common OS over their mobile, tablet and desktop devices for years. So fail to see how that is a Microsoft advantage or even unique to Microsoft. Yeah because nobody with a high-end smartphone cannot do that already with their laptop!?!? Essentially the same OS as in 2007? You really do not have a clue about Apple devices and probably don't use them. Again you are making the same mistake that the salesmen running Canon are making... Saying things like sales are more important than the product. Sales of Nokias were great before smartphones!

  27. It's much more pleasing to watch something thats not flat and gray, but full of beautiful colors and contrast. That is why I usually shoot with Gamma C, sometimes normal, but almost never with Gamma DR. I think this dynamic range hype (which EOSHD is full of) is mostly nonsense, as long as it leads to overall bland image.

  28. Andrew mentions it... When every hipster in the world has awesome image IQ and steady shots, what will you be doing that makes your work more impressive than that trust fund kid standing in the same spots as you?
