  1. 4 hrs later... But on a more serious note... indeed good job on listening to the feedback and make amends.

    Some real-world NX1

(Do let me know if I'm posting too much NX stuff… but for those on the fence…) Did a real-world shoot and a tough one - school for severely - and I mean severely - cognitively disabled kids. No lights, rooms were not very bright, mix of flos and skylights. So, nightmare. (I'll be doing interviews with the directors and parent testimonials that will be properly lit down the line). Shot with these lenses: Old Nikkor 80-200 2.8 AF push-pull, wide open - bought it used maybe 18 years ago, pre-D version and mojo for days; More modern Nikkor 28-70 2.8 (aperture ring lens), wide open; The little 16-50 Samsung kit zoom - wanted to try this for handheld stuff and mimic a steadicam using the AF and OIS. Other than the day being sort of emotionally devastating (can't recall how may times a kid would absently take my hand if was standing still - sweet, beautiful kids who are mostly non-verbal) I was really psyched - I've never shot sony DSLR, only Canon and Nikon, but this thing is by far the best DSLR I've used. Never stuck a loupe or monitor on it, and only used the EVF outside - the OLED with peaking gave me great focus, even at 200 2.8 (I wore a pair of reading glasses when shooting). I was constantly hitting custom WB and looking for something white - very mixed lighting and it really came through, with the usual light casts to highlights that are the norm in those situations - yellow/pinks that clean up easily in post. Shot from 800 iso to 2200, mostly from 1200-2000, all day. I can't tell the shots apart today. Was not thinking of this as a low-light (or mid-light) beast, but I'll be damned - it is crazy clean up to 2200 at least ( I didn't have murky, black shadows to deal with, lighting was dim but even). Images below - 200mm 2.8 - really pretty character, yet sharp as hell where needed - just a touch of color correction in Photoshop; 70mm 2.8 - 100% detail crop, ungraded or sharpened; The kit lens, wide open - cleaned the highs a bit in PS. A note about that kit zoom - I really dug it for wide & stabilized stuff… wide open. We shot out in a playground and I didn't know we'd be outdoors, so shot at F16-F22. It is a weird-ass lens stopped down like that. The sharpness is simply bizarre (and I had sharpness dialed all the way down). It's a lovely piece of glass wide, the OIS isn't earth-shaking (or earth UN-shaking) but will give warp stabilizer a head start), but the AF is freakishly, crazy useful for that sort of shooting. I see these going for as low as $140. If you don't have the big S zoom (hell, even if you do) it's a useful lens. I need to research the wide 2.8 pancake primes for these sort of shots now. Very impressed with the camera so far. Battery life was reasonable, and I was 2nd-nature, not really thinking about anything but the image, on my first gig. Damn it Samsung, don't give up on the NX!!!

  3. I liked it too, not as overly JJ as those Star Trek movies, but the whip pans and shallow DOF quick zooms are as played as the flares, so glad he's not doing the next one. My only real complaints is the plot was pretty transparent, nothing at all was surprising. Second, it's basically a remake of the original, but I get it, they're bridging the old with the new. Lastly, they changed the pitch of the blasters and put too much bass in the light sabers, they sound funny. I watched Empire and Jedi earlier in the week, I think they should have kept the same sounds. I agree with others, Kylo Ren is badass, a much darker dark side. Love it. Saw it in a packed theater, every time one of the old favorites appeared on screen the place erupted in cheers, a cool moviegoing experience.

  4. And he's not using the grip, wow. The battery is one of the main culprits, they get hot when you get close to the 29:50 time limit. I'm going to do some testing outside when it warms up, it's a frigid 55f in Florida right now. Will be back in the 80's early in the week though. This is really great to see.

  5. Interesting to see a similar look on the recent Philip Bloom video promoting the FS5: http://www.sony.co.uk/pro/article/broadcast-products-pxw-fs5-philip-bloom-review-no-limits Both cameras look lovely if you ask me. It really comes down to the skills of the operator/editor. Props to both Ricardo and Philip and their craftsmanship!

    SONY FS5 vs SAMSUNG NX1

I'm out of topic here but actually I think lack of smart EF-NX adapter is not a big deal. In fact the aperture adjustment of the EF lenses are never smooth, why bother if we use manual focus? Buying a couple of Nikon / Contax / ZF / FD / MD / OM lenses does make a lot of sense to me, they have much smoother manual focus with hard stop and declickable aperture ring.

    Wide Angle Adapters?

I need one for a 50mm 1.2 that works wideopem, which one should I get?

  8. Yep, no matter how great NX1 is, the enthusiasts video market was too small for Samsung. I believe they targeted the dying DSLR market which did not pan out as they hoped. Probably cause everyone is invested in native Canon and NiKon lenses. Too soon to quit though. Pitty. At least now the small market of video enthusiasts can get it cheap.

  9. He is at 2.5 hours without overheating. I guess we should never speak of it again. I can say I did not expect this. Good job Sony. Seams to me companies have started listening more and more these days.

  10. SEMI SPOILER Kylo Ren is a great new villain. Nothing like him before in Star Wars. Temper tantrums with a light saber. Anakin had moments but his were more anger. Kylo's were more uncontrolled and wild. So stoked to see what Rian Johnson does with him.

  11. Guys chill down, both cameras are sharp ebough and both great cameras. http://***URL removed***/reviews/image-comparison/fullscreen?attr29_0=samsung_nx1&attr29_1=sony_a7rii&attr72_0=4k&attr72_1=4k&normalization=full&widget=270&x=-0.6200531303374722&y=-0.7117791260015072

  12. It depends on the codec. If you already see that you are CPU bound then upgrading the GPU will not make a difference. If you want better performance, you are better off trans-coding to cineform. H264/H265 are not editing friendly See here:

  13. I can't really imagine because the limitation to 30min is actually due to import tax laws in the European Union (photography camera vs. video camera taxes).

  14. Zoom vs prime... well that's certainly a fair test for sharpness... Next!

  15. Do you disagree? Honestly up until a short while ago I was not an NX1 owner... but after all the footage, pictures and reviews of the NX1, I became convinced that it was worth a shot. And now having owned it, I can tell you it's a great camera. Granted it's not perfect... no camera is. But it is an awesome value for money. It's 1080p is better than the 4k of many cameras. And it's 4k is among the clearest that I've seen. Colors are good also. It's amazing that there can even be a debate relative to cameras in a totally different class... that alone should stand as testament to how good a value the NX1 is. Truth be told, you could spend a lot more and still end up with an inferior camera in many ways.

  17. Heres my settings for the camera on these shots : Saturation -2 // Sharpness - 10 // Contrast - 3 // Master black level 8 // 16-235 // For these frames I used the Canon 50mm f1.8 and Samyang 24mm f1.4. As for the grading, I used no input lut, just the Sunderland (deluts) Lut at 100% // Fade 44 and Sharpen at 18,5 (though I will decrease this) ! As for the curves go, heres an image of how it looks, notice I also lowered a bit of saturation on the yellows and reds : Heres a few more shots with this grading : Some of these will require noise reduction, some are shot at 1080p others at 4k, and I will probably tweak further. I find this grading very versatile, it fits mosty of my shots with little to no tweaking, outside, inside, church with those terrible lights and all that. Hope you guys like it

  18. Here's an idea to get an extra $6K that you can pay off over 2 years with no interest. Buy a C100mII with 0% financing. Sell the C100 "as new". Now you have over $5k in fluid cash. Put it toward the Scarlet. Pay off the Canon monthly bill for 2 years with no interest. Boom.

  19. The resolution that I see from the C100/BMCC is ideal for me. I think what has made me reconsider is the new Blackmagic cameras. They just don't look as rich as the original models. The DR looks nice but it's just too sterile and digital-esque. Yeah I made that word up.

    Your ideal NX1 Settings

Why is it so popular (in EOSHD) to emulate "dirty" look of 70's and 80's movies? Wouldn't be more beneficial to emulate something like The Martian? Clean image with beautiful colors. Is it becouse it's so much harder to make image look actually good, and it's easy to make images look crap and then say it's artistic?

  21. Haha. Is Arri LOG on the Alexa dynamic range hype in your book as well then? Same principal.
