Red One MX - Why I bought one
Paul Kepner and 5 others reacted to Mattias Burling for a topic
I buy most of my stuff used. Simply because you get more for your money. And it was during the release of the A7rii and A7sii that I got the idea. Why pay such a premium price for a camera thats going to be worth half within a year? And what can I get for the same amount today?(It was the same reasoning that lead me into my recent film endeavor.) So I found myself looking at used cameras in the €3000 segment. At the top of my list where the Sony F35, but no luck (since I needed a recorder as well). I also looked at URSA, FS700, 1DC etc but none was a perfect match. So I started lurking the Red user forum. There I saw Red Scarlets ready to shoot with accessories for as low as $6000. And when I saw the Red One with everything you need + a set of Rokkinon prime lenses for a crazy low $4000,I knew it would be the one. That particular seller didn’t want to ship to Sweden, but another one did. In less than 24h from leaving Spain, this huge box sat on my floor. (Disclaimer: All IMO of course, totally get why one would rather have an A7rii, its was just my personal thoughts.)6 points -

Cant speak for others but Im not excactly allowed to share footage from work. It belongs to my employer or client. I can only share stuff from home. And eventhough I just finished a 20min doc shot on the bmpcc, bmcc, bmpc4k and lx100 that I own completly, I wont share it because it then looses value when selling it to a network.2 points -

Ya, I seen a link to this crazy deal but they don't ship outside of Switzerland: https://www.digitec.ch/en/s1/product/samsung-nx1-body-black-28mp-cameras-2759475 Its so weird they are getting out of the camera business with such a great product., who the hell knows whats going on. But the deal Mattias mentioned with the lens sounds great? Need to sleep on it!2 points -
shooting magic lantern on the 5dmk3 with sharp and fast primes and using the greatest sensor height you can (ideally the full 24mm height), alongside 2x anamorphics for a 2.75;1 delivery is about as close as you gonna get. however you'll not be able to match the out and out field of view since most projection anamorphics are not designed for wide angle use. at the moment the closest thing you gonna get to the look of ultra panavision 70 is an a7sii in full frame 4k mode with a iscorama 54 and a fast 45mm taking lens. this will get you pretty darn wide and with a 2.66:1 ratio and less pronounced oval defocus, as well as fine grain from the 4k low noise sensor.2 points

Anamorphic and Zooms
shanebrutal reacted to artiswar for a topic
In the past, I've found the two usually don't go together. But if you search hard enough, a sharp zoom can cut it. First test I shot using the Anamorphic Shop's Focus Module with a Schneider Cinelux MC and a Nikon 35-70 f3.5 on the a7s. ClearImage zoom was set to 1.3 to avoid vignetting across the full focal range (full coverage on MTF it seems). Most of this was shot wide open on the lens. Just sharp enough for my tastes. Hopefully in the coming days I'll get a test out using the 80-200 f2.8. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LeMMkV9s3-U Any other experience with zooms and anamorphic?1 point -

You where getting ripped of, a mount for Yashica is €100 But mine takes Nikon and need no more accessories. Regarding hard drive space, I love how little space it eats. Compared to the BMCC its a vegitarian But I get your points. Its as always all down to personal situation, needs, preference, etc. If we take the URSA. Its first of all much more expensive. Probably twice or three times the cost after all the accessories. A used URSA or URSA mini 4K body only is more than I payed for a fully rigged Red with media, EVF, Monitor, etc. And if I rigg out an URSA I have a camera with very smilar specs. Both shoot Raw, bot have high fps Raw etc. Seize and weight.. yeah the URSA mini 4K might be a little lighter but its heavy enough for me not to exactly run around with it. And its lower DR etc. But the the reason that made the final push is the Red codec. It is crazy nice to work with. Specially if you have Final Cut (which I very recently switched to). You can use Resolve, Reds free grading software or simply import in Final Cut with access to Raw settings. But what really sets it apart from the BMD Raw is that it flows. If I use 4.5K Raw (crazy) WITHOUT creating proxies or optimized media, its pretty much real time playback. On a base model Macbook.1 point -
I Bought one and sold one last year camera is awesome all the shooting options but he forgot to mention that it take up to 96 seconds for it to power up it eats batteries power for breakfast no to mention space on HD. i know camera is a professional and PL mount now you need Pl lenses in my case i cant rent every time i like to shoot or experiment i got family to feed I was thinking i can get use my Yashica lenses well on top of 10k i spend on camera i was looking for another $2350 for 2 mounts that will enable me to use my yashica lenses pretty much anything for that camera from a screw to extra battery or is above 500 dollars. And lets not forget the weight of the camera. Felling that i got from the camera that i head for entire 2 months is that its a 2 man job to operate i was always asking my wife to hold this hold that. Then i went to shoot outside charge the batteries got a Zeiss Compact Prime 35mm 300$ a day by the time camera power up one batteries was half gone i got 22 min of shooting and 36 minutes in standby mode. Then wanted to buy bigger battery but 450 US dollars that is 620 Canadian it just adds up. And lets not foget you nedto to spend some money on a HD space for your computer or a brand new computers since you are working with red raw its fine to play with one file or one shoot but wen you start editing short films or music videos in 4.5k or even HD it cost money. So what did i buy with 10k a color correcting station (something like in that pic) beefy computer BMPCC, lights, glidecam400 kowa B&H davinci resolve. My main goal is the learning the art. I know that MX shoot nice pictures but if i cant view those images properly on a dedicated monitor or grade them and see what i am doing wrong i might as well get a grading station and BMPCC which shoots raw and i can see exactly what i am doing with color and scopes. BMPCC is not MX but its dam close when it comes to image and what you can do with it. But if everything goes according to plan next year purchase will be red scarlet camera they go for for abut 7k to 10k. but still i am jealous that he has red mx its a great camera for right person just not for me1 point

How can you say this without doing a side-by-side comparison of both cameras under exactly the same conditions? Sometimes a camera will seem pretty good by itself, but when compared side-by-side to other cameras, things like color and skintones become very apparent- the results may surprise you.1 point

Do you guys think that Sony will ever make a FS5 like camera that uses the A7sII sensor? It seems like the dream combo for alot of people that are used to DSLR style shooting, but would love the benefits of NDs, audio, 10 bit, raw out etc in a relatively small package.1 point

EM5 II for videos? Am I about to make a mistake?
Zach Goodwin reacted to dvcrn for a topic
Thanks for the comments guys! Glad to hear that at least some people like it for video. The thing that makes me hesitate of course is that for the same price, I can get already cameras that are more sufficient for video but well, without IBIS. Maybe to re-phrase my questions: Do you think the EM5II is a camera that could help me with the transition from hobbyist to more serious? I value the IBIS very high because I don't want to buy more and more equipment or anytime soon. When I shot with my RX100III I hated the micro-shakes especially taking a step. Is the IBIS something that makes my enthusiast life easier or am I valuing it a bit too high? Is the image quality something that needs professional hands to look good or is it something that hobbyists / enthusiasts can get around too? I want to of course avoid buying another camera in a few months1 point -

Paddy, to me your kind of work (and what you say you need) screams Canon 5D (2 or 3). Superb stills - and for the experimental/art video RAW is an obvious choice and fine to use in controlled scenarios.1 point -
EM5 II for videos? Am I about to make a mistake?
Zach Goodwin reacted to fuzzynormal for a topic
You can go back read my posts on the camera if you wish; it'll give you insight to my context. You can see some videos I've done with it too. Bottom line: I like it just fine. If I was shooting ultra wide, not sure what the stabilizing would be practically offering me though? Ultra wide shooting doesn't really need stabilization. AS for the EMII, I have two $100-ish speed boosters for it plus a bunch of basic dumb adapters. It all works good and the old Canon FD and EOS glass looks good. Nice thing about speedsboosters and dumb adapters, it'll give you 2 focal lengths with one lens. I'm a firm believer in shooting motion picture with manual focus. The peaking and EVF is strong enough to allow focusing by eye. That's really great. Anyway, even though I have 4 M4/3 prime lenses, about a dozen other misc primes, and the Oly 12-40 proZoom, I shoot most video stuff with an old 55mm FD lens and the speedbooster. I like the focal length AND the extra heft that old glass provides. I do recommend the shooting ergonomics with the extra battery grip, in my opinion. Shortcomings: with modern glass the image does moire. Meh. Not a deal breaker for me. The older adapted glass reduces the moire, FWIW.1 point -
Changing from a GH4 to Samsung Nx1 opionins
Marco Tecno reacted to chauncy for a topic
I point you to some of my thoughts: http://***URL removed***/forums/post/57013879 I don't have a gh4 so I don't know if the difference is big enough to justify a jump. But the Nx1 is dirt cheap right now and here in europe I get the sense camera shops just want to unload the gear, so you may be able to talk them down. Many camera stores have used samsung gear as well. As I point out, I got my nx1 and both S lens for less than the cost of an A7rII body. The detail with an Nx1 is just insane. I find the footage relatively easy to work with and get cinematic results. I would never buy a camera just because its resale might be good. I want to use it for a long time. If I do ever sell it, I will sell the entire system. If I was to advise I would get just the samsung lens your shooting would require for all the auto focus and the rest. Fill in with canon or Nikon manual lens with adapters. MF works brilliantly on the nx1.1 point -

The little 16-50 kit lens that comes with the a5100/6000 would be a great match for the FS5 and a small gimbal.1 point

Sony FS5 - why I bought one
Jimbo reacted to marklondon for a topic
Ha! Welcome to the darkside. I own an FS7 and a GH4. They are my workhorses. I expect to replace both with an FS5 in 2016 for 80% of my work. I travel internationally to places where small kit is essential. Can't wait. *I also own an A7S II which has yet to earn my trust. ** the GH4 is the best DSLR since the 5D2. The only reason I haven't already bought an FS5 is in case a GH5 suddenly appears on the horizon.....1 point -
Canon XC10 4K camcorder
Lintelfilm reacted to jcs for a topic
Would it be possible for you to do a side-by-side shoot with those two cameras? Including time to grade skin tones + full color grading. Also compare their autofocus functions. While I'm certain it's possible to match the C100 II and FS5 (I can match the C300 II with the A7S II), I think you may find the C100 II takes less time and effort to make look good, especially in challenging light (multiple colors, non-continuous spectrum, etc.). Color and AF are why we went with the C300 II vs. the FS7 (kept FS700 for 240fps- even with 24Mbps internal codec the quality is good enough).1 point -

Nice looking images; confirms my experiences with the EM5II. Out of the box you're not going to get the ideal motion picture images from it, but a little manipulation in cam and in post you can make it look very respectable. I dunno. I've found it more than capable. Others not so much. As for the film...I want to know what's in the case. It's Marsellus Wallace's soul, right? ;-)1 point
