    David Bowie is gone

His last album is brilliant. Check out the other video too, nicely shot - Very sad he's gone. Every artist on earth today has lost a part of themselves somehow.

  3. I haven't had any problems with banding, but that could be down to having not seen a blue sky since purchase, and there's something about the SLOG 3 aesthetic that really appeals to me. Here's some screen grabs from some shots I grabbed in Wales over Christmas. There's some colour blocking going on in the left hand side of the sky, but you really don't notice it watching it back.

  5. yeah, I know a lot of people who didn't like it. I have a feeling my ranked list of Tarantino's movies would be more or less inverted when compared to most. I still count Jackie Brown amongst his best.

You've got some goddamn nerve being that disrespectful to a peer. You would never address someone like that in person.

Wide angles work very nice with large format causing less distortion. Worked great with the camera movement too. Natural light was captivating, one of the advantages of digital: http://www.videomaker.com/videonews/2015/12/epic-western-the-revenant-shot-using-only-natural-light

I thought the lighting, acting and cinematography was fantastic. If I shot this or had anything to do with this movie, I would be proud.

  10. I'm shooting on a Kowa 8Z and am currently using a Helios 44-2 58 F2 as a taking lens. I've found it surprisingly hard to get flares that resemble the classic anamorphic streaky look.. I've only really taken it out on one shoot, but I've had a play around with is quite a bit and a mate mentioned that the taking lenses will (obviously) influence the shot looks, but I wondered if changing the taking lens would change the flare characteristics substantially? Like I say, I've only taken it out once and I was pointing it right into the light most of the time (video below), although obviously not on the silly grade time lapses. I've been hunting around on ebay and am considering the following, but can anyone tell me how much difference they're going to make, or show me some footage from a similar set-up? I'm not unhappy with the Helios, and perhaps it's not flaring because of LED lights in squares, instead of one focussed light source... Potential Lenses: Rokkor 58 1.2 or 1.4 Jupiter 9 85 F2 Carl Zeiss Jenna 80 F2.8 Reckon these are worth the investment, or will it make no difference?

  11. This is a killer price for a really capable DSLR for video and stills. Really pretty video, superb stills, takes 30 + years of Nikkor glass. I bought my D7100 as a refurb in Sept. of 2013 and it's going strong (Nikon refurbs come "as new", complete accessories and sealed package). It lacks 1080p @ 60FPS, and of course it's not 4K, but the image holds up very well in todays' world. A lot of camera for the money. Saw it on Adorama, probably at other vendors as well.

  12. I recently compared the horizontal flare on the Helios to a Nikon 50mm f1.8 both with the Sankor 16c attached. I found the Helios gave a more subtle flare and the Nikon a stronger 'blue line' horizontal flare.

  13. I don't know the classic anamorphic streaky look. The Helios is great with the Kowa and the Jupiter 85mm is a perfect addition (they are very prone to flares). If you choose a modern multicoated lens there is much less flare. The thing is though that anamorphics were not invented to produce flares or oval bokeh. They determine the composition and you can shoot with longer lens and get more shallow depth. It is a matter of the subject if you go the anamorphic route or not. But nowadays nearly everything is shot/cropped in 2.40. Not sure if even L. Trier does it now instead of his dogmas (didn't he say they are obsolete?)

  14. oh this is yours? I have seen it a while back and really of the videos that really made up my mind! GREAT look footage esp straight out got the camera! Really looked like one of those Gordon Ramsay's Pro cooking shows. Very impressive stuff indeed!

  15. I've been trying out this rather neat LUT called Prime Time: https://vimeo.com/146809144 I like what it's doing so far. The correction seems minor but in a huge way. The guy said it's designed for Cine4, but I've used it on a modified Slog2 profile and got decent results:

  17. just got my shogun back from repair yesterday, I'll try and do some tests soon. In setting it up I can tell you that some camera features are not available while the shogun is plugged in, like white balance. But ISO and shutter speed are available, and I assume aperture control as well, but I'm using pl lenses right now so that's not an option anyways.

I'm certainly biased as a lifelong outdoorsmen and hunter, but I enjoyed every second of the landscape shots. I completely understand how many may find those sections to be slow paced. I agree there may have been one or two dream sequences too many. The reveal of Glass killing the officer was the one underwhelming point of the film for me as well. Even with the cultural implications of killing an officer to save the life of a native american, the moment just seemed to come and go without much weight to it, and seemingly without consequence to him.

You don't get take them to see the movie together, but to see it with you The good thing is that neither you or them will have to pay for their tickets.

  23. well the local guys are actually a bunch of geniuses. My first camera was a Sony a58 which died after 8 months of use. always on auto (i was a complete noob) and still somehow died. Couldnt claim warranty since my sister got it from Canada this time and took it to Sony Malaysia and they said it would take $230 to change shutter and some other things. I didnt bother because by that time i was $400 brand new. And in an event (my sister wedding), the photographer introduced me to his go to repair guy and he repaired my sony for $60. WHICH then died again after 6 months of HEAVY use but I blame the camera not the guy. He also fixed the Canon 30D I have. I bought it somewhat running with the display stuck and fungus and dust all over the camera for $50 with lens.He fixed it all for $12. Anyway, I have my answer So thanks everyone for helping me with the decision! Won't buy a camera for another 2 months perhaps but when I do, I shall get the nikon.

  24. I liked some of the dialog and the acting, but as far as QT movies go, it is pretty far down on my personal list. I may have a different opinion when I watch it again, but after the first time I was a little disappointed.

  25. I vote NX1 because I love the image, and they are on fire sale right now. I personally love having a viewfinder on camera for doc work, so the GH4 and NX1 fit that bill. The 2.5K is great for narrative, and has some good used prices online, but I would hesitate using it for documentary work unless you rig it extensively.

  26. “NX-1, GH4 or 5DMkII?” The answer is yes. Any of those cams will allow you to capture fine images and to an accomplished 1080p edit. The quality on all will be fine. The difference in how they render their image is a nuance that you'll have to decide on your own, preferably by doing tests. In a way, it's like choosing a preferred film stock. As we all know, any "drop dead gorgeous" images created on modern gear typically depends on the skill of the shooter and lighting, not the camera. You're right to be more concerned about the post process and, depending if your a beginner or a skilled pro, figuring out the best workflow for your abilities. And man, when I shoot a doc and end up with hundreds of hours of footage, I want postproduction firmly planted in the KISS realm. If you know how the BMCC behaves and are pleased at what it delivers, why not stick with that? ProResHQ and Raw, use either depending on need.

  27. I'll do it. I've acted in a few indie shorts and features. And if you need a woman's voice, my girlfriend used to act and is looking to get into voice work.

  28. You can always make the edit with a comp track and share it around to online forums for people that do VO. If your cut is impressive enough, maybe you can work out a swap wherein a pro agrees to help you out in order to have a cool new video on their demo reel.

  29. I am looking at a few words only not a full speech that has to be learned and so on. A lot of amateurs doing videos like this use their own voice without any training or being big pros as you say. For some it looks nice for some not. Just looking for someone that has a nice english (unlike mine) and nice voice and is keen to do that so I just ask. As you say, probably no one will want to do it but you never know so I ask.

  31. How one can come onto an internet forum and claim that a massively successful film by any measure was a "Bad Movie" always blows my mind. Different strokes for different folks I suppose. I loved every second of it, truly

    Your ideal NX1 Settings

Back to basics. Default Gamma DR settings with sharpness at -10. MBL = 0. 16-235. Film Convert (Arri / Alexa / Rec 709 - Astia 100). I love using this camera. I know they are exiting but I wish they gave us one more FW update for it as a parting gift (VERY doubtful). NX1 & both "S" lenses.

  35. If you dont get it you dont get it. Some play soccer. I think it sucks. Thats becaude I dont get it. So I let it go. At the store I might buy stuff to make Pizza. The guy next to me buys frozen pizza. None of us get it. So we let it go. But I dont stand there questioning him, try to lecture him or call him names. I let the man eat his pizza and let it go. I will pre-order that thing asap. A roll of of s8 costs $15 from shoot to export from the NLE. Cheaper than going to the movies and ten times more fun imo.

  36. These days working with ML raw is a breeze. Reqired CF cards are much cheaper than a year ago. I have 5d3 and love working with raw. I have bought 2 sandisks 128gb 160mb/s and they NEVER gave me dropped frames. Never unexpected recording stop. NEVER. It is very reliable. 128gb last for about 25min 24/25p 1080p. My workflow now is: -put CF card to the reader - 2 seconds -use an app called MLVFS which "mounts" the files from the card and makes them virtual CDNGs - 128gb take maybe about 30 seconds -open resolve 12 and import files - 30 seconds Color correct, cut, do everything and export - there is NO need for any conversions at all. Thats it. There is some nice app, all-in-one solutions in the making right now - called MLVProducer. On shoot i had 4 CF cards and nextodi 2730 with 2TB HDD onboard. Archiving 128gb takes about 25min. Then i can take HDD out, plug it to the PC via sata cable and work straight from it. Memory is getting cheaper very fast. Instead of investing 2-3 thousands $ into new camera (and cry about 8bit etc) i rather buy 8 new sandisk cards for 1300$ and have 200 minutes available without a need of copying it on set.
