It's getting even harder to hang on to a camera for longer than 5 seconds before something else comes out

  2. The lack of touch screen is unforgiveable. For all the people that moan that pros don't need a touch screen in models like the A7 and RX series, seeing Dan Chung's News Shooter touch screen demo clearly illustrates the focus pulling-like capabilities a touch screen offers. What's the point of having state-of-the-art PDAF without having easy access to focus point selection?

    Film Grain

I use it and to reduce damage to the grain by youtube/vimeo I find it best to oversharpen the main output before export. So I don;t apply any sharpening to the footage, then I overlay some fine grain like 4k gorrilla grain, then apply sharpening onto the nested grain and footage. get the sharpening to the point where it's perfect when viewed at 100%, then boost it a tiny bit more so it starts to look a bit graggy. then go back to half way between 'perfect and 'graggy' the grain and footage behind it glue together nicely and the grain has enough edge to be seen as detail to be preserved by the youtube/vimeo compressor. I also feed them a 2560x1440 file rather than a 1920x1010 file - even if the original footage was only 1080p. seems to maintain more of the grain.

Touch screen on the A5100 with face tracking is mean as! Why not?? I'd rather spend more on lenses than the body, as that is what will last longer.

This is going to be such a popular camera. A real bargain for $1000, you're getting the image of an FS5 with better AF system, better EVF and 4x cheaper in a MUCH smaller body. Shame no IBIS but it is only one third of the price of the A7R II! Samsung NX1 only other APS-C camera to do 4K from 6K readout.

  7. New version is up! Special shout out to Mercer for feedback on some lines and everyone else. I want to thank you guys again for caring and helping me make the film better. Thank you. And the subtitles are much better now. Some are too fast still - but I was unfortuately picture locked with grading and don't have time to go back in and extend shots. Maybe some time later. Please share if you like it. Or give me more feedback so I can keep modifying the film until I am 105 years old.

It's consistent with the A7 line offering. I think many people had unrealistic expectations, this is a 1000$ consumer camera, they won't go and use it to kill off their premium line with it. I don't think this is the camera they expect people to buy the G Master lenses for. 1000$ body, 2400$ 24-70 2.8?

  16. several things, but for video, most notably: - higher bitrate (200) - zero nr - faster fps (240) at 1080 and/or 720 - faster fps (60) at 4k - crop mode selectable at 4k (ala nx500) for a digital zoom - 10 bit - 4:2:2 internal rec - evf turnable during video For stills, a lot of things, but especially focus bracketing.

  17. In here as well with an NX1 and NX500. The Firmware Files I have are v1.20, v1.21, v1.22, v1.30, v1.31, v1.32, and v1.40. I have uploaded them to my Google Drive and you can access the link here: https://drive.google.com/a/cmcfirm.com/folderview?id=0Bwt0uzFgEoRkQ2ZLOUJOM295UGM&usp=sharing Former Canon/ML user looking for some love on the NX line. 19. Dude, you're gonna get such sharp images with those Milvus lenses that you're going to need to switch back to 720p. Thanks Sir! Ya know...funny you should mention the SLR Magics..I really had it in my mind that I was going to put a whole set together, but then a big bunch of multi-cam work came my way, I bought three more Blackmagic cameras, and then I needed to get a bunch more lenses that matched the Nikkors and Samyangs I already had... so sadly the SLR Magics that I do have are now my "odd man out" so I'll probably sell them. They're still mint though - I take better care of my glass than I do of my ass.

  20. Below, full picture is 1D X Mark II at 20MP Largest white box is entire frame of 1D C at 18MP Smallest white box is DCI 4K. It's a shame the still can't do a full pixel readout at 5.5K or 6.5K like Samsung have been able to do on the NX1. I am sure the 1D X Mark II sensor could do 5.5K if they let it! Yeah it's crazy and I really dislike this kind of 'marketing'. They may have lost a few sales here. Very hard to go back to standard picture profiles after you have spent so much time and effort on your own looks / LUTs. Canon need to re-consider this... What exactly would they cannibalise by adding just one Cinema EOS feature to their non Cinema EOS camera!? And it isn't as if the 1D X Mark II is exactly cheap.

  22. Zeiss C/Y lenses on speedboosters are a superb option I use alot , I made a full set of f2.8 Zeiss C/Y lens - yes the f2.8 versions so on the speedbooster they are f2 when fully wide open - and thats how I use them wide open , the glass in these lenses is identical formula that is in the Zeiss Super Speed cinema lenses and Zeiss Ultra Primes - the guys on RED USER have done loads of A/B tests and its identical , so for me as I like to shoot f2 max the f2.8 Zeiss C/Y lens are amazing . Cinema quility glass at affordable prices - I went for 25, 28 35, 45, 50 , 85 . 135mm

Panasonic are forever playing catch up on specs as they can't compete on a level playing field with the smaller sensor. GH5 should start the transition to Super 35mm. Otherwise it will have to be seriously impressive to lure us away from Sony (raw, ProRes, 10bit, 120fps 4K) or to maintain any kind of uniqueness.

If it's a "me too" product at Photokina it's dead on arrival. We have IBIS, 4K, 120p, etc ... if they want to get going they'll need stuff like internal 10bit 422 4k or RAW, 240fps, quite better high ISO... I see the micro43 as a problem until the new organic sensors come in a few yeats.

4K 60fps and/or 10bit internal, and that alone would "kill" the A6300 in the eyes of many people in favor of the GH5!! (of course there would still be many people who would hold out and prefer the A6300 of course, everything is all very subjective in the end as to which is more important than another factor or not) I somehow doubt the GH5 will however... but could be the GH6 would! A bit like the GH2 => GH3 => GH4 progression. I feel the GH2 to GH3 was more like a half step forward, but GH3 to GH4 was a GIANT LEAP! So GH4 => GH5 might just might be a consolidation and refinement stage, before they make another GIANT LEAP to the GH6? (organic sensor at last for the GH6?)

It sounds great, but after my recent experience with my A6000 I really hesitant to buy a new Sony again. My A6000, after a year and a month (of course, never withing the warranty time), started behaving crazy. Now, most of the time, I can take a picture or two, then none of the buttons work, none of them. I tried everything but no luck. The customer service didn't help much. The worst thing is if I want it repaired from an authorized center I've to ship it to Connecticut, and the average cost of the service it's around $250! On the Sony forum they just don't respond. So, after this experience, despite the new A6300 sounds really exciting, I think these companies should give customers a better support, but they actually don't care because people keep buying their stuff. Sorry, this went a little OT, but to me a new camera also means think for a moment about their support, because theoretically any new camera can have issues.

Finally had time to pick up the 35mm from the post office. Had a quick play on the BMCC and I like what I see. Very clean bokeh balls. Also really like the build, which I normaly dont on old Nikkors. But this had a nice solid feel.

Most of Sony's aps-c lenses are stabilized. Only time will tell if Sony is going to move IBIS down the line or keep it on the A7's. I think given the size of FE lenses there's definitely space for a larger, top of the line crop body with IBIS that sells in the $1500 range. I'd buy one, FE lenses are getting too damn big and the new ones are the largest yet. I wonder if we're ever going to see any more lenses like the 28/2, 35/2.8 and 55/1.8 - all are small with good IQ and one is pretty cheap, the others can be had at good used prices. Sony's FE lens strategy is making me reconsider my decision to wrap my kit around the A7's. Crop lenses and a speedbooster covers pretty much everything.

It's just the general trend. If you look at the lenses that Sony, Canon and Nikon have recently announced it's to 99% either really really expensive or plain uninteresting. Luckily there's the Sigma ART series for those of us who want performing autofocus lenses and still be able to pay rent. I'm feeling you. I love the NX1 but the system is dead and not compatible with accessories I have (and that will never be fixed) so I'll have to decide between color (Blackmagic, Canon) and 4k / HighFrameRate / LowLight (Sony)... or you have to be filthy rich and get a sherpa to carry your RED Weapon for you. I was really short away from just going meh and buying a A7rII or A7sII but then both have downsides and after test-grading some footage I downloaded I'm not sure Sony give me at my skill-level colors that make me happy.

  35. I'm with Geoff. Per EOSHD: "Nov 20, 2014 - When the NX1 was being developed in Samsung's lab, the sensor output ran at 6.5K raw at 240fps." http://www.eoshd.com/2014/11/samsung-nx1-review-glory-technology/ This is theoretically possible. For me though, I'm hoping at least 240fps 1080p, possibly even 4k. Also would like 14 bit RAW video like Magic Lantern offers. Changed recording limits would be useful.

FHD at 120fps. S-Log3 100mbit Phase detect AF 4K No full frame.but it was never on my list of must haves. And an insane price! Cheaper than the GH4 It has S-Log2 and S-Log3, and at least in the dpreview article the 14-stops were stated for video.

Seeing how the sensor has 24 megapixel I wonder if the 20 megapixel 6k read-out with downscaling means additional crop over APS-C? Unfortunately no comment regarding low light in the conference, I wonder if it's up to what the A7rII does in APS-C crop mode. Edit: or is 20 megapixel the 16:9 crop of the 24 megapixel sensor?

  39. I use Natural too! Maybe it's my grading - perhaps I have a subconscious desire for everyone to look like a tart? To be fair it doesn't always happen but seriously though, if you try to bring colour out in the cheeks the lips can often go silly.

  40. I think the crop should be calculated diagonally not just on the horizontal res. To be honest I am 1.4321 from not giving a crap. Eno why don't you go and make a XXXXXXXXing film. Haha. I hope he enjoys his 0.421x share of Nikon as much as his crop factor calculations. Eno, you can bullshit and bluff your way out of it all you like - the upshot is I will just dislike you even more as it shows you can't put your hand up and admit you made a mistake. You haven't used either camera, either.

I have a little first hand knowledge. I have the 50mm 1.8 and the 28mm 3.5. They are both decent little lenses. Although I never tried it, I know the 50mm 1.4 is highly regarded for video. That vintage lenses for video guy has a few videos covering and featuring that lens. On the wide end, the 28mm f2 is supposed to be great. I've even read a few claims on some forums that it is one of the best 28mm lenses ever made. Good news is that most of their lenses can be had cheap. Even the 28mm f2 can be had for less than 200 bucks.

  42. Well, you claimed they both shot 4K and UHD. So your not exactly accurate to the last number either.

  43. Andrew, have you managed to play with any other uploaded profiles on your 1DC? Surely someone can unlock a lovely LOG setting, or even snatch C-log from the 1DC. Possible? Move seen a few "EOS Movie" vids on YouTube - as standard seems to look like much clearer and detailed 5D mk III footage with a bit better dynamic range. Definitely needs a proper lovely profile for us cinematic nuts!

  47. Long time reader, first time poster. I don't know about the site owner, Andrew Reid's opinion about the 1DX mark 2, but I think this is great. Sure, no C-Log, but if you've never used it..... Like I have.... You're not missing anything. On top of that.... If you're coming from Canon.... Waiting for the past 2 years for a proper 4K camera from Canon without costing over $6000.... I mean... Remember when the 1DC was announced at $12999??? Anyway, I'm one of those canon guys... And although I didn't care much for 4K, I sorely wanted a high frame rate camera and I wasn't blind to the fact that in the future, whether I like it or not.... 4K was part of it. I wanted high frame rate, cause I like slow-mo and I use twixtor. For the longest time I wanted a 1DC, especially since Andrew was raving about a used one... Better than most in terms of IQ and color science up till the end of 2015. But only difference between it and the 7D mark ii and the 1DC is 4K, not worth the more than 2 times the price. Up until now, I was going to invest in an a7s ii, especially after hearing that it does 120fps, but was afraid of the convoluted menu system, it's weird color and heating issues. Motion Jpeg and Cfast, both space intensive and costly, but I'm looking at something that will last over 5 to 10 years especially if I'm investing $6000 in it. So, Cfast will get cheaper over that time, and I'm going to upgrade computers, increasing drive space and so on to accommodate the 4K stuff too. Sure, there are other cameras... I'm a creature of habit and comfort.... I don't want to invest in something that requires more learning... Still learning how to color grade and add FX.

  48. I'm not sure I understand all the critics about this camera. Is it, so far, the best photography camera for sport/event/nature photographer ? My answer is yes. Is there somewhere something on this price range (6000 USD) who can do at the same time (Cropped) 4K 60 fps and (a bit less cropped) 120 fps Full HD (not even the C300 MK2 don't do 60fps in 4K) and the sony 7SII is far away if we consider all the camera aspect (bitrate, battery life, solidity, lens availability, color science, autofocus...) Not that I know of. Yes, the footage will need to be converted if shooted in 4K, but according to the 2 statement below, I don't think it's so much an issue. I also agree if the camera was doing 4 K all-I internally in 10 bit 4.2.2, have peaking and XLR input,... it will be the absolute winner, but come on, please, this is not so bad for now. I completely see some photographer very happy to get sometime very nice 4 K footage during their photo work. And again, Any video camera on this price range is not doing at all photography as this one does. Thanks Canon!
