  1. Absolutely agree with this one, 1. Most important - Higher bit rates is the thing we all need the most. Lets get rid of macroblocking and all sorts of problem. 2. Turn off the NoiseReduction - in my mind, the NR must slow eat a big chunk of processing power. If turned off, this power can be used elswhere. 3. 10 bit or 12RAW - I mean, honestly. You cant argue with this one.. 4. Higher frame rates - is what makes the camera more appealing to us, but honestly, not more usable. Just makes it a better deal 5. Trying to disable crop 4K on NX500 and applieing 1 to 4 to NX500. That could make the camera more appealing to everybody. (not sure if we established already this is not possible?) PS: Chant, as other stated, if you are dedicated to this task.. As other stated, dont be shy to ask for compensation or think of crowdfunding from us, if you plan to break in the camera and make it whole new better piece of tech.

  2. The list of additions are interesting, I have to admit the focus will be on video and all other aspects will be secondary. Found a few things. DRIMe-V clock rate seems to be 200mhz. And that seems.. low. Im expecting an NX1 in the next few weeks, so that is one thing I will test. May have to do some heat dissipation help, but from other things I have found in the fw that should be able to be pushed. If things are on the level of the sony a7(s) line up with their over heating issues I think a tad below that will suffice. The upper limit should be 700mhz+ But erring on the safe side will always be more logical. **Edit** In additon to that finding, I will have to track the changes to see if they upped the clock rate in the later fw. I am working in the first revision as that has the largest file size, so I assumed it would have the most debug changes from the 1.0 layout, with the other firmwares focusing more on updates and camera usability changes.** I wasnt intending to work on this tonight as I have some graphic design work I need to do, but the more I look, the juicer things get!

  3. Higher bit rate recording for 4K and 1080p (160 Mbps+) Higher frame rates (4K/60 fps, 1080p/240 fps) 2K recording mode and/or 4K crop mode similar to NX500 Ability to turn off noise reduction completely

  4. Depending on what I find there could be an option for a 1:1.29 lossless or a higher compression visually lossless hevc. Creating a custom lut for a more red like log seems possible also. The firmware seems more of a proof of concept that they left it open to change so many things. And more so to show they can go head to head with the established makers and make something better. Since this thread has garnered more interest I have shifted to put more hours into this dive I am doing.

    Specs vs Reality

After ejecting yet another Sony camera that looked great on paper (RX10ii) I thought I'd make a little comment about this... its been replaced by a Canon XC10. On paper a crazy idea, but in reality it's an upgrade. No ultra high speed, but no problem TBH. Slow lens? Yeah, but great colour great battery life, brilliant menus and autofocus... If you look on paper at the specs and the choice looks silly, but actually use the cameras and all becomes crystal clear. Sony menus are so bad they ruin the experience of the cameras for me. The build quality is also questionable, probably partly due to an obsession with miniaturisation that is becoming counter productive. The colour is so obviously Sony because it's always missing something. The F65 looks great, but once you get down to consumer/pro crossover level I'm afraid it's just a bit piggy unless you want a kind of odd bluish Kodak emulation on everything. its not that you can't make it look nice, it's that it restricts you to a certain look that isn't always suitable, so I find unless the situation is very controlled I can't cut it with Canon C footage to my satisfaction. its so disappointing because Sony specs are great, and their innovations like the memory CMOS for high-speed footage, as well as continuous ND are brilliant. But every time I get one of these things into a high-pressure situation or back into post I just feel let down. i actually WANT to like them, but I don't! So I'm venting. ill add some XC10 footage to the pinned thread shortly...

  6. I'm a massive, massive fan of the original Ghostbusters. For this new iteration, I think it's a great move to have female Ghostbusters - especially with some of Hollywoods best female comedy actors and Paul Feig. There is a BUT though. The original films worked because the humour was so deadpan, dark and offset by silly yet terrifying visuals. It also had this kind of weird realism to it. It was serious, yet ridiculous. This trailer shows us this in reverse. To me, it looks like the Scooby Doo films (visually) and the humour seems to be a gag based affair, kind of like an Adam Sandler or Martin Lawrence movie. The tone seems very cartoonish and parody-like, reminiscent of the Scary Movie series - complete with "fat jokes" and "sick" gags. I feel the VFX from the original is superior, it's far more "black humoured" and equally quite scary for kids, whereas this would fit straight into a ghost level on a next-gen Mario game. The appeal does need to cater the new audience, however, they have done themselves no favours with the typical Hollywood comedy edit of this trailer for audiences who know the original. The female cast isn't the issue, but there a lot of other factors to be worried about if you're a fan of Ghostbusters. This is still a trailer and may not reflect the real movie at all. I remember the mouth watering Man Of Steel trailer which was almost art house like, very emotional and brooding - yet the real film was a Transformers style Superman destruction fest. Hardly the film I saw in the trailer. Maybe when we get to 27+ in age, we can't grasp this modern sparkly filmmaking because we have the nostalgia of the past versions. In my view, I much prefer the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles to the new one as the characters felt real and grounded, based on the practical effects and smaller budget. The new one is like a video game where Shredder is the Final Boss and he's going to kill you with this Transformer mech style rocket blades. Just doesn't seem as good to me, but I'm not 10 years old with memories of the 90's eh? I want this Ghostbusters film to be good, but in my personal opinion, this trailer isn't a good start. I think Hollywood should "cut down their production scale. The visuals no longer look convincing or tangible, plus the studio has far too much power over content and creativity. Take the route of Netflix, who obviously give a massive degree of creative freedom to their talent.

  7. If i see it right (in the Chart) then the maximum Bitrate for the H.265 HEVC is at Level 5.1 (found this Level in the File-Infos of my NX1-Videos) 160.000 kbit/s, approximately 156 Mbit/s. And interessting too, the maximum Frame rates: c4k @ 60p UHD @ 64p an FHD @ 256p

  8. I thought Ghostbusters was a comedy. Just watched the original and Pt.2 last week, they were funny even though the sequel was an obvious cash grab. RIP Harold Ramis, was hoping they would get together for a Pt. 3 as it seemed like Murray was hinting about the possibility, but his passing meant that was never going to happen. Don't care about the gender of the cast, comedies should be funny. The trailer isn't funny at all and it looks like the reboot is exactly what I thought it would be -- Bridesmaids (not funny either) ripping off a classic. Melissa McCarthy = Adam Sandler to me, can't stand either one. I'll wait for the DVD on Netflix. Many of the comments are from morons, the anonymity of inter web strikes again. But this one was funny: "Sony next venture is telling the story of the black panthers...staring 4 white dudes"

  11. Please share some material of yours that backs up the counterargument to the one I'm making. and also read the video description before coming to conclusions. if you can see blacks and whites in uncorrected flat material then it's serious under or over exposed. This is correctly exposed, with a overcast sunlight so contrast is naturally low anyway. so there are no whites or blacks Download the original file and apply a contrast adjustment and the colour looks right. We're not talking about contrast, blacks or white. we're discussing colour accuracy. this was shot auto white balance with no adjustments. If you can;t get a good image from this original file It's your fault not the camera.

  13. I know by experience that the NX1 is not very sensitive to heat. I had placed in a vacation my camera at the pool - right in the sun (it was 30 degrees Celsius in the shade!). After about 25 minutes UHD / 30p recording was still running - despite that one could hardly touch the housing. Heat test passed! I would say.

  14. When it comes to that point things can be figured out. As I stated, I started this project for my own ideal goals for this camera, I guess its just a plus that more people are interested in expanding what the nx1 can do. The next few weeks will dictate what is possible back end wise. What otto k has also done would be useful. As building a front end like ml would be more user friendly compared to what was built for the gh2 and ptool, and that sort of firmware update system. If we could get a list going of what people would like to see it could help focus the work better. Unlike other cameras the firmware is complicated but not near as obfuscated and vastly lacking encryption as other systems. Open source really makes it easy even if the sdk isnt public.

  15. I became aware of this thing through this forum. So I guess Im kicking in wide open doors here. But I like it so I thought I show my results anyway. I got both the Nikon to E-Mount and NX. My first thought was, shortly the ND must be bad and soften the image. Well, compared to my proven Genus Eclipse its actually sharper... It has a shift towards yellow. But its so small that after grading its not visible anymore, even without correcting., Some moving images and review.

  16. I just sold my A7rii today. After having it for a few months I had nothing but huge headaches. I did many test with a 4k video devices recorder. Besides the worst rolling shutter I've ever seen no one seems to be talking about the horrible judder when panning. At first I thought it was just I'm shooting in 24p and viewing on a computer monitor at 60hrz. But further test in every setting, shutter speed and frame rate seem to have far more than every other camera I've shot with. Another problem is in 60p and 24p 1080 the noise level is bad. I also kept getting bad moire and aliasing in full frame 4k and 1080p especially in the highlights. Granted as a small compact photo camera it's frickin pretty awesome. But for video the image only looks good in crop mode 4k and as soon as it moves or things in it moves it falls apart. I barely took it on a shoot because of how much testing I had to figure out before I felt comfortable with all its down sides. And is not worth it. I went back to my Nikon D750 with a external recorder for now until I decided what to get next, but even though the 1080p image is softer everything else is far better. Rolling shutter very little. Noise level very clean upto 6400. Slow motion just as good as the 24p and very smooth. Color science far better. Dynamic range little less. Post with it is super easy. It's a shame this camera has gotten no attention, but it such a reliable camera its what we wanted out of the 5D Mk iii but quickly forgot about with all the 4k cameras that just keep adding more new problems, headaches, time and money all for the sake to say its 4k.

  17. People are all entitled to not like a film for whatever reason they care to choose. It does not make them misogynists. I honestly don't think anyone 15-35 of my generation even know what sexism is any more. The term is applied so liberally to so many things. People need to learn the difference between prejudices, tastes, personal preferences and the -IST words. You might prefer pizza over burgers. This is a preference for pizza, it is not a form of food-racism. I am sure many of the people upset at the new Ghostbusters movie are just saying that the don't like it, rather than saying that they think men are superior to women, whites superior to blacks, slimer superior to marshmallow man. I think if they substituted Lara Croft with Rambo in the next Tomb Raider, fans of the series would be equally disappointed. And that is mostly the sentiment here. I am sure we all have our preferences when it comes to much loved 80's films and what made them work in the first place. For me the male buddy-comedy central characters were a big part of that. This does not make my opinion sexist. Now some will say that preference for a male cast is sexist... some will say it is anti-feminist, anti-woman, even anti-ghost. This shows they do not know the definition of terms like sexism and racism. Do I like the trailer? Nah. Fan edited one is better than the studio's own! It is definitely not a feminist film despite what the marketing and the gender of the cast wants you to believe. Crude vagina joke, lame script, poor VFX. The reboot is far more a cynical box office plot to appeal to a larger female demographic than anything else.

  18. I guess the ideal thing would be to write a virtual machine for running experimental NX1 fw into it. It won't guarantee that no risk is taken once ported onto the real thing, but it would actually lower the risk by a large margin. I don't know if this is easily feasible, though. Another great (but difficult thing) thing would be a "fw pushing" service from a PC, so that you can push a new fw onto NX1 no matter it's state. Another ideal thing would be a recovery, to be invoked by some keypress.

  21. I have the two s lens. I think the 16-50s is a good lens, but I find the 50-150s lens to be better in every way. It's really hard to get a good zoom pull with the 16.50s it sticks in a couple of places. It also is pretty underwhelming with its boken even at f2.0. It's sharp and resolves absurd amounts of detail. The 50-150s is superior across the board. Zooms easier, better optics at all zoom levels, I think it's a lens that when paired when the nx1, is very hard to match from any camera lens combo. It's what the nx1 was built for. This lens. I have the 30mm samsung pancake and I would rate it as very useable and sharp, but it doesn't have much character or wow factor. But it's cheap and tiny and good for travel and gimbals and such. I'll be using the Samyang t1.5 vdslr 85mm more and more. It amazes me every time I've used it. I bought this in canon eos mount and use it with adapters on my BMCC as well. I love the boken and it can of course get down to a paper thin focus plane. This will probably be my go to portrait lens for both cameras. It's suprisingly cheap for the quality. I definitely would keep any nx mount purchases down to a couple of lens with all the automatic stuff. (since they be useless with other mounts) Any other lens I get will be canon or nikon with adpaters

  22. I expect there are lots of finished pieces shot on Sony Alpha series where colour is to your liking, but not everyone lists the camera they used in the description. And usually the best work never has the camera listed because it's the last thing they think to include. I think if I ever find myself in a position where I have the time to shoot material for myself rather than to show a specific lens character (for business purposes) I'd also not include the camera used - as a result the views obtained will be for the quality of the work rather than for consumers and forum users to use for reference before making a purchase. It so happens that if i list the camera in my descriptions it brings more hits from those looking for samples of a camera, and sells more lenses to those not aware how much impact the lens has on the image. I keep putting this up as an example. But to me I see ZERO problems with colour here. We have proper light, good, clear and healthy skin, and a naturally pleasing lens for skintones. If i gave this footage to any colourist worth talking to they'd have no complaints about the image. This sample footage is exactly why so many colourists and post experts seem to be interested in the dso lenses. if it chimes well with real colourists then it's good enough for forum chumps like us. Anyway, I'd like to see some of the so called bad footage from the thread starter before I make any more comments. Let's see the image he got from the a7rii and the image he gets from the d750. I know for a fact that the flaws he left the camera because of were user error and nothing to do with the camera.

  23. All of the current conversation regarding Sony colour science seems almost right to me. Having been a Sony user for years, I find the colours from their cameras (in a pleasing, accurate way) to be inferior to Canon, Nikon and Blackmagic. Autumn Leaves is a good baked in look, however it's vastly limited by any grading, dynamic range and highlight roll off is steep. Might work for some, not for me. I've had some pleasing results from Slog2 custom profiles, however the result is always sort of pastel looking. For some stuff, this works great! (attached still from recent shoot, shot on A7S II + Sigma 18-35.) I guess it depends what you're shooting. I find the Sony's are great for dark, edgy, gritty, surreal stuff like rock music videos. But for glamour, beauty, fashion, interviews, bright colourful work... there are better options.

  24. The Canon image is one that is very firm, not soft and flaccid. It is an image that can stand erect against the competition, maintaining its rigidity throughout the entire act of image gathering. When the other Cameras go limp and shrivel up, the Canon is virile and strong. Do I have this right?

  25. Everyone says the Sony can produce just as nice colors. But no one seems to be doing it.

  26. I understand people have preferences but there are some things that should be stated correctly. 1. HD FF resolution is better on the A7rII than the D750 2. Rolling shutter is also faster on the A7rII with FF HD than the D750. A7rII HD ~ 13ms D750 HD ~ 20ms (similar to the 5DMIII as shown here) 3. As others have mentioned, while motion cadence can be influenced by the codec and the camera most of the cases it is other things such as shutter angle that cause problems. Personally I have not experienced the issues that you mentioned and in a comparisson here with the A7s and GH4 I cannot see a difference: 4. Color science just means correct white balance + some custom color profile. I am going to agree with the point that some cameras such as D750 or the Canons have better color out of the box. But that is very different from saying the Sony cannot produce nice colors. Anyone that is serious about video should calibrate the camera colors to their preferences (Sony allows you to) and do a proper white balance before each shot. For example using S-log3/S-gammut for everything with some random LUTs and AWB, will most definitely lead to bad colors. Again it is fine not to like a camera but we should separate personal preferences from the usefulness of the camera. At the end, cameras are just tools and we should find ways to make the best out of them.

  29. Also I am not saying the D750 is the best camera ever. But I am talking about in the low end under a few thousands for small productions or run n gun being super reliable with the least amount of headaches and clean slow motion (for low budget music videos on a 3 axis gimbal). And whish we would demand more of this instead of asking for higher resolution before giving a better overall image and camera first. Im aware you can't rent high end cinema lenses for it, but why would you rent $100,000k worth of lenses on a shoot that can't afford more than a $2000-3000 camera that has rolling shutter worst than a 5D mk ii and a long list of other issues. I also collect Nikon ais manual lenses and use them on all my low budget projects and adapt them to alot of cameras so I guess the level of work my Nikon D750 is for this isn't an issue for me. Beyond high-end cinema lenses, Zies cp2, Samyang, all third party DSLR lenses all sell Nikon versions. So besides Canon lenses and other old slr lenses what can a 5D have that a Nikon can't? Can't add a PL lens on either anyways. Granted rental house will only carry EF mount so there is that issue because of supply and demand. By like I said why bother with lenes 10 times the price of the camera. When that budget is already so small it should be put into lighting and production value. My experience as a DP and camera operator has been with all the REDs, Alexa, FS7 at my work (don't get me started on its quirks), C300, 7D, 5D Mk ii, 5D Mk iii ML RAW( which I miss having that image quailty but software kept crashing on shoots it's a shame Canon won't venture into that). Sorry I'm rambelling on because I am just getting fed up of wasting time and money with the hype on these new spec and ignore solving the problems with the last generation of cameras and we are not pushing back on camera manufactures enough and just say oh well let's just deal with our footage is super janky. When photographers only need to get a 5D every 6 years and do lots of professional work while our world you buy any price camera and 2 months later it's so outdated and people in Los Angeles for example are asking for you to bring a cinema camera that isnt even out yet but herd the hype. Then when you use it and your producer ask why does it look like that? Why are there iusses with it? Why is there so much rolling shutter. Why is there so much judder. Why is the colors look so bad it's not the camera the DP sucks I here this some many time from various producers and directors about many DPs. And because of the hype they hear these cameras are 4k and awsome and will look like a red or Alexa for cheap and won't listen to the details of why these cameras have issues and keep blaming the DP. Are you talking slightly green. I'm talking the camera will give met a error message and go as far green as possible and refuse to white balance on anything. To fix it I just have to keep trying and hope it won't act up or just dial in the tempature as close as I can guess. They don't work that well on it. It's a weird sharp hard ghost and strobing effect. Looks very unnatural especially at 180 shutter angle.

  30. Well, let's also be honest. The trailer isn't doing the movie any favors. It's bad. Mundane while being too revealing of plot. Maybe Sony should've considered hiring out this guy's editing and storytelling skills:

    Micro jitter help

What camera you using out of interest...APS-C sized sensor or smaller? 3 initial ideas come to mind... 1.Configure or buy a camera cage or cheap baseplate with rods and attach handles and/or shoulder pad to act as a basic brace or full on shoulder rig for your camera. If your camera has fixed LCD monitor, grab a loupe to attach to it and configure a lightweight rig that suits your preference and budget. A loupe will also provide an extra point of contact between you and the camera to minimise shake and jitter. Building your own brace style rig can be done very cheaply by sourcing DSLR rig components on eBay. 2.Shoot at higher shutter speed than normal, so that each frame is crisp with minimum/no motion blur. Then feed the footage into Adobe's warp stabiliser in premiere or after effects to take the shake out. Having crisp frames enables the stabilising software to work much better. If you want to re-introduce motion blur to your shots afterwards, you can do this in Adobe after effects. 3.Buy a better tripod.

  32. It's just plain basic misogyny. I don't know why anyone should be shocked by this sort of reaction. The internet is run by 15 year olds. 15 years old, literally and figuratively. Insecure dudes need a scapegoat for their sexual anxiety. Also, they have a hard time relating to gals as regular complex human beings. As such they don't want anything other than the simple objectified stereotypical woman in their pop culture. Which, by the way, I think they view pop culture a little bit as their entitlement. --And I would note that, in a sense, they deserve to feel this way as MOST successful pop culture and commercial marketing caters directly to them. And they like that stuff segregated. The ladies can have their own stuff, but their response is to relegate it to the dismissive Chick Flick category, "Put it in the corner. There we go. Okay, that feels better." When a well regarded pop culture franchise goes against the norm, they get bent out of shape, simply because they're not very sophisticated people. Some of them might be some day, but at the moment many are not...might not ever be. I suppose it's good to try and push back against this ridiculousness, but it's like trying to push back the tide with a broom. So, dial up the SJW umbrage if you feel you must. Be aware that most young guys are just stupid and confused. Although, might as well try to get through to a few, I suppose. Worse things to do. All that said, hey, it might not be a great movie.

In my opinion you want to get lenses from the same manufacturer from the same lens line up. If I were you, I would start investing in the Rokinon/Samyang/Bower lenses. Or if they're a little too pricy for you, then breakdown your lens line up into interior and exterior lenses. By doing this the slight difference in lens characteristics can be negated. Btw, what type of video work do you do? This also can help to steer you in a specific direction.

But not if you need 60p. That's my primary use, with an occasional need for 4K. And I do remember tech reviews at DVInfo saying that the internal 60p HD on the A7s, internally downsampled from 4K, was some of the best they'd seen; it never occurred to me that the A6300 might be a step backwards, if indeed that's the case. (I wonder if an external recorder circumvents any of this?) Of course, I don't want to read too much into that single sample, and am hoping to see more at 60p, though it looks like most reviewers are focusing on 4K or 120fps.

  46. Hey, I am currently on a shoot for a music video for 3 - 4 days but I have checked my mail, if nothing I will personally contact Samsung regarding the SDK for the NX1 in the weekend. My guess is its sensitive SDK with very deep hardware binding codes because no one has leaked it anywhere, which means Samsung is having you write a deal with them to keep it to yourself. I literally spent days searching for it without a single trace of it. I personally have no clue what this SDK is, what it looks like and what it does exactly, all I know is what I have read and heard there is no images of it either, Samsung is really keeping it close to the chest and I only read about some people having it, I tried contacting them but no answers. I highly recommend people go around try contact these people whom possess the SDK for the NX1. I will take a wild guess and assume it looks something similar to the Tizen SDK but with more hardware control, I will just post the image of the Tizen SDK here, however realistically it probably wont be as amazing as we think but it might be a good start to construct our own set of developer tools.

  47. I posted about the work Im doing on the firmware side of the nx1 a few pages back, but it was/still is hidden for some reason. **no longer hidden on page 11 at the bottom. Much more detail about what I have found on the camera.** To sum it up, I have been working on this the better part of 6 months, didnt know anyone else was interested until I found this thread a bit over a week ago and posted my findings. Im at a point of comparing the changes in the firmware versions to see how the code is written. I have uncovered the bootloader, the file format and language used for their custom control files for tizen, info on lut, rgb 888, sd card bus speed(its quite low should be ush1 u3 but its not set close to the speed stated in the sd association docs) and a few more things. My goal is similar to what the guy said on the gh2 hack. I had a hacked 144mbs gh2 I used for 5 years until moisture killed it a few months ago. The tech inside the nx1 should be capeable of pushing the hevc and the sensor to the limit, even if it shortens the life by 4-5 years its still cheaper than a red by a magnitude. Ideal goals for me are raw/compressed raw output, see if cdng or another compressed raw format would work. As red raw is just their version of jpeg2000 modded for cine work. There is not a deadline I have set to finish this, as this is just one of many projects I have on the go but comparing it to other cameras its quite promising.

  48. I use the Sony A7RII (as well as the Panasonic GH4) at work every week. Fact: My personal Canon C100 eats it for breakfast when it comes to motion cadence, rolling shutter, color science and overall cinematic quality. The 4K cameras might be sharper, but only by a little, and at the end of the day, resolution is the spec that matters to me least. All the fancy tech and high-power processing in the world doesn't matter if the image isn't pleased. And I mean pleasing right out of the camera, not pleasing after several hours in DaVinci resolve wrestling with SLog. Super flat profiles work great for RAW or 10 or 12-bit RGB video. For 8-bit compressed codecs, it's generally better to have a strong REC.709 image right off the bat. Also, the A7RII overheats after about 10 minutes of recording. Not great for interviews or long takes. The sad thing is, once upon a time, Sony had a magical camera called the F35, which had more mojo than anything this side of the Arri Alexa. And as much as people love to chalk it up to the CCD sensor, much of that same silky cinematic quality trickled down to the CMOS-carrying Sony F3, which as other people have pointed out, continues to be a beast of a camera, especially at the low, low prices that it now sells for. But somewhere along the way, Sony switched directions and decided to go for brute-force processing power and crazy specs, rather than real cinematic image quality. And as a result, while they have gained tremendous ground at the consumer and prosumer levels, they have ceded the high-end to Arri and Red. I have a lot of friends in rental houses and they clue me in as to what is going out most often: 1. Most people hire Alexas. 2. Can't afford Arri? Go for a Red. 3. Can't afford Red, but still need 4K? Sony, it is. 4. Don't need 4K? Have a Canon C300.

  49. New to the forum, but I have been working on the opening of the firmware for quite a few months. The second I heard about this camera coming from a modded gh2 I knew things were going to be fun. I had plans to release what I found after having a stable custom build. Good news after reading this thread as I seem to have quite a bit more discovered than most. -bootloader -3d lut info -rgb888 info And quite a few more things that make this an ideal camera to mod. In the interview they basically implied they either had asics or fpgas built along side the arm cores. "DE: When we were talking previously, you said that the architecture of DRIMe V is very different than DRIMe IV. What sorts of changes are made between them? JK: The biggest change is the structure of the Image Signal Processor. The DRIMe V ISP is very different. Most ISPs have key parts of the processing hardwired to get the needed speed. What's really new with the DRIMe V is that the "hardwiring" can be reconfigured. DE: That sounds very significant, although I have to admit I don't know how common it is that ISPs are actually hardwired. JK: There's not much variability in them. Sometimes you'll get thresholding changes and small numeric variables, but the image path is usually very locked down... DE: It's pretty much, a fixed pipeline. JK: With a few tuning pieces, yeah. DE: Whereas this is more configurable. JK: Yes. DE: And it's configurable not at the level of changing a firmware program, but you're actually changing the hardwiring. There are switches you can use to change the configuration of the functional units? JK: Yeah, basically. And Samsung's software people are all over it; they're pretty sharp and I believe that we're really going to be able to tap fully into the DRIMe V's capabilities for the NX1. DE: So even though it's hardwired, some of the connectivity is programmable through the firmware, so we can actually look for continued "firmware" development that would continue to improve performance, including the parts that are implemented in hardware. JK: Yes. DE: So there may be significant improvements in the near future. That's pretty interesting, because it sounds like it's already starting out pretty capable. JK: And not just image quality, there's a lot going on in terms of programmability, like we talked about Samsung Auto-Shot mode before. Here's the UI for it." TLDR: fpga or cpld or asic that can be reconfigd. Now a few years ago samsung released info about adding fpgas into asics http://www.eetimes.com/document.asp?doc_id=1200317 And have teamed up with Lattice on a few projects http://www.oregonlive.com/silicon-forest/index.ssf/2014/04/which_oregon_company_has_a_chi.html The back end camera control files seem to be written in .cpp so diving deep into the firmware to do a comparison of hex/string/hash changes and tracking the changes across the updates is what I am doing right now. And seeing which values can be modded. Recompiling is a different story but what it seems to be is that building a smiliar man in the middle to what magic lantern would be possible. Have a gui that would simialr to ptools in camera using the web browser capabilities. Now this is not my full time work so Ive been progressing slowly as I have many projects on the go. This is also coming from someone who doesnt yet have an nx1. Doing the proof of concept and running the fw in a vm to emulate the possible bricking before things are bought. I am also tracking similarities to the nx500 to see what things are possible in that camera. Nice b camera which should be able to compete with a shortening of its life but at the cost 10x performance is worth the lifespan limit imo.

  50. +1 - by the way, Samsung's support of hacking was that they released an SDK for camera control - nothing deeper than that. So someone could potentially develop more remote control apps or keep them coming when Samsung abandons theirs. I wonder - rumor mill was that Samsung NX engineers have been transferred to various divisions. Would be cool if someone had an in with Samsung (journalist or filmmaker, I dunno) and a funded project could actually fine a software engineer who worked on the NX firmware, and hire them as an engineer or advisor. Seems like that would be a more direct path to a useful product. It's a giant company though, but hey, place an ad in a Korean trade publication?? Other than that, see if anyone at ML has dug into the camera - someone experienced may have some insights into the structure of the code and how difficult it could be.
