Great Modern Lens Article!
Flynn and 2 others reacted to Henry Gentles for a topic
Did a shoot with a mate and we had identical cameras but he was using a really old beat up Nikon 50 1.4 and I was using the Canon 50 1.8 II. The difference was shocking, the Nikon just popped and looked cinematic and the canon just looked flat, ok colours maybe but no pop and no wow, flat and dead when compared side by side! Made me realise, had I not seen the Nikon side by side, I would not have seen how bad some lenses really are. Not that I was expecting miracles from canon's nifty fifty, but I've taken a lot of sharp photos with that lens and it has never let me down but dome designs are just in another class!! http://yannickkhong.com/blog/2016/2/23/the-problem-with-modern-optics3 points -

NX1 rolling shutter in live view vs. video standby
sandro and 2 others reacted to Andrew Reid for a topic
I'm afraid all the replies so far aren't right. The NX1 uses a power saving live view mode when not in video standby mode. In this mode for framing up a shot, there's hardly any rolling shutter skew because the sensor is doing a very fast sweep, missing out a lot of pixels and lines. We call that binning. In video mode it does a 6K full pixel readout for the great quality 4K recording it has. That takes time... approx 30ms for the rolling shutter to expose the entire sensor, which is what creates the skew in video mode. Switch to 1080/120fps and it reverts to pixel binning and there's less skew.3 points -

austinchimp and 2 others reacted to Shield3 for a topic
"A7r ii nothing but headaches". Hasn't been for me. I'm sure I am clearly in the minority here not hopping on the anti-Sony bandwagon, but having owned the a7r / a7s I find the colors of the a7r mark ii noticeably improved over the first series a7's. Are they as pleasing as the 1dc or the 5d3 raw? Of course not - just different. I don't shoot Slog-2 often and leave the picture profiles completely off, and I make sure I manually set my WB first every time. I'm loving this little camera, and in s35 mode + the Metabones speedbooster I'm getting great footage with it and my Canon glass. I shot the 85 1.2 II handheld the other day and was amazed by how steady the shot was. Shrug. There is no perfect camera yet. I think the UHD downscaled to 1080p from the a7r2 looks stunning, and I shoot people and landscapes mostly.3 points -

Indeed. It's one of the fascinating things to me regarding US politics insomuch as the pro biz party also has in its corner the evangelical religious folks, who you'd think would be pretty clear headed about the morality of things. Then again, maybe they're not really that concerned with a philosophical morality, only how they perceive their own. Anyway, I'm on record as saying I don't think capitalism makes it out of the 21st century. That's not exactly great insight. Many people smarter than me are on board with that assertion. I mean, look, less than 100 people have more wealth than 3.5 billion people on the planet. I mean, I'm not against affluence, but hoarding wealth is just not healthy for a culture. It is immoral. Society is just going in the wrong direction; does;t mean we're doomed, just that we need to adjust. Enterprising people and moneymakers will always be around, but the system and culture of modern capitalism is too reliant on gluttony and exploitation to survive the social and economic stresses of the future. I suppose it could be argued that it's gone already, if it ever really existed in the first place. How does one see an "invisible hand" anyway? ;-) I doubt Adam Smith would even approve of the twisted version of his system as practiced today. Unions are really the only effective way, right now, to push back against those that willingly exploit. And unions aren't needed everywhere. I assert a business, any business, can be healthy and generous without maximizing profits at the expense of their employees. Their are nobler goals to strive for.3 points -

There's no rolling shutter because stills use the mechanical focal plane shutter while video uses the electronic shutter. It's quite obvious on cameras which can shoot both mechanical and electronic shutter (A7s, X-T1, ...), one has clear rolling shutter and the other not.2 points

Is the majority online really idiots? (Ghostbusters Trailer)
Kingswell and one other reacted to silvertonesx24 for a topic
This is yet another example of where I think in some ways we have actually gone backwards with this whole race/gender thing. Where ’progressivism’ becomes effectively re-gressivist, instead of just evolving society beyond such things. The example that stands out was whole deal about Finn in the Star Wars movie- I have never in my life once thought about the skin color of stormtroopers. Faceless fodder, no attention paid. But in 2015, it’s a call to war for both smug, insufferable race-baiters and actual, real racists to rage endlessly on about. Instead of, oh wow, putting a face on a Stormtrooper, that could be interesting, the actual discussion being had make me take note of the skin color, whereas I would have never thought about any of it in the first place. And apparently, nothing much has changed in 2016. I don’t care who you cast; I have little interest in any Ghostbusters without Bill Murray, and I’d assume many others feel the same. But that doesn’t stop the race(gender)-baiters and the real sexists (although sans 12yo YouTube trolls, I doubt many actually exist) from entirely shaping that’s the discussion here. Oh really? Go point out those terrible, awful, hurtful misogynistic comments. Oh wait it's a YouTube comment section, where anyone who's been on the internet for more than two days knows as a cesspool of tween-age trolling. I'm not reading a whole YouTube thread, but the comments on the first page are hardly "obvious misogyny" when the majority of them are basically "this sux, stop ruining classic movies hollywood" or obvious blatant trolling and baiting.2 points -
Unions, although flawed, cause they are run by humans, which are, like all of us, flawed, are perhaps one of the few innovations of the past two hundred years to prevent exploitation of workers. They exist in places, because they are needed. The reverse are countries like China, where they do not care at all for worker's safety, and workers will literally sleep at a job site. I was offered a job shooting a feature over there were it was 7-days straight for 16 hours a day, for a month. When I asked for a day off or two, they said that was standard working in China. Sorry to hear about your back. That must have been horrible.2 points

Petition for Samsung NX1 hack
Pavel Mašek and one other reacted to undecided for a topic
If I may chime in here. The ideal interface for me would be to drop some files in the sd with names like 4KMax.config, 1080pMax.config for example. The GUI should just get all the file names that end in .config and show them as options. I pick one and the settings from within that .config file are applied. This way, the system could be made very flexible and extensible and people can share settings. The file should probably be in a human-readable format like json. I am very interested in bumping up the HEVC bitrate to whatever maximum is allowed. I think that will improve the image quality a lot. My PCs have high end GPUs so I am not worried about decoding. I am prepared to contribute $$$ to the effort as well.2 points -

Isco and Century for Sale! (+Cinemascope t-shirt)
Xavier Plagaro Mussard reacted to Tito Ferradans for a topic
Hello my fellow anamorphic friends! It's time for upgrades and because of that some of my gear must go! Lenses will be shipped from Vancouver, BC - Canada. I only accept PayPal. Taxes and shipping are my responsibility. If interested, reply here, send me a PM, or an email! ferradans@gmail.com One last thing before we get to the lenses: I'm currently selling a Cinemascope t-shirt, unique stuff. Price is $25, including shipping. Click here to get yours and be sure to send me which size you want it (M, L, XL). This is my attempt to fund the Anamorphic Cookbook and all the Anamorphic on a Budget videos so any help is appreciated! Now to the pretty glass part... ISCO WIDESCREEN 2000 MC (1.5x stretch, focus through) Click for photos of the lenses. The best focus through adapter out there (meaning you use the taking lens’ focus ring). 1.5x stretch, Isco branding and quality, excellent performance and a very compact, solid and lightweight build. I have two of these lenses for sale, each one fitted with a 62-72mm step ring for diopters or single-focus solutions. Glass is in pristine condition, no scratches, spots, dust or fungus (which is almost a miracle considering the age of these lenses). They come with original front and rear caps plus a regular 72mm front cap. SALE DOES NOT INCLUDE REDSTAN CLAMPS. For more information, check my review! Price - USD700 each, shipped ISCO 16:9 VIDEO ATTACHMENT Mk I - or "1.33x Iscorama 54" (1.33x, single focus) Click for photos of the lens. This is an extremely hard to find adapter, in plain words, it’s an Iscorama 54 with 1.33x stretch, which turns a 16:9 sensor into an automatic Cinemascope machine. Single focus operation, set your taking lens to infinity and shoot away using the Isco’s focus ring. Focus is smooth and glass is perfectly clear: no blemishes, scratches, fungus, dust or anything. Goes as wide as 40mm on full frame. Comes with both original front and rear caps and a Redstan clamp (72-77mm), which makes rear thread 72mm or 77mm according to your preference. Front thread is 95mm. For more information, check my review! Price - USD2600 shipped CENTURY OPTICS 58mm ANAMORPHIC (1.33x stretch, focus through) Click for photos of the lens. The Century Optics is one of the most recommended adapters for people starting out with anamorphics and I sincerely don’t understand why people even complain about it. This one is in perfect shape, no damage whatsoever to the glass (no dust, scratches or fungus) but one or two tiny scuffs to the body (see photos). Stretch is 1.33x and rear thread is 58mm, making it super easy to attach to taking lenses. Goes as wide as 35mm on full frame, which is very good coverage (losing only to the Panasonic LA7200) and focusing is done using the taking lens’ focus ring. Close focus can be challenging but a cheap diopter kit is enough to solve the problem. It comes with original front and rear caps and an adapted 77mm front thread for attaching diopters (not shown in photos). For more information, check my review! Price: USD650 shipped1 point -
Automated Slider Systems

Edelkrone slider with action + target module or Red Rock's 'one man crew' parabolic slider...both way over a grand, even used. Edelkrone will do almost all things you mentioned, but only with target + action module add-ons...Red Rock's parabolic slider is fixed in an arc track (and I don't think does timelapse). Either hire in one of these for each job, or try to find a cheaper version from another manufacturer...but these are the only two I've used and would personally recommend not breaking after 3 weeks. Not sure that a grand will get you very far for a motorised slider that is built well, no doubt there may be a few out there, but I'd be surprised if you could find a decent one that could be set in autonomous mode or do timelapse for that kind of money. 2k seems to be the starting price of most commercially motorised sliders that are not made of Lego. Personally, i'd make my own if money was tight...buy a cheap linear and curved slider, then retro-fit your own belt, motors and controller. Making an autonomous 'ping-pong' mode would also be quite simple. But remember, even with the Red Rock + Edelkrone sliders, motor noise can sometimes be an issue when using for interviews (although Red Rock slider is pretty quiet).1 point -

Heck, There's no reason to look at tribal culture. I have experience with my grandmother as an example. She and I grew up next to each other as neighbors, so I know all about her history. She was born in 1920 and grew up on the family farm. It was hard labor during certain times of the year, but the hard labor side of it wasn't that daunting or time consuming. Most of that farm life was just, as it happened, life. You know, feeding the chickens wasn't really work per se, it's just a chore and something you do as part of your existence. With her, her mother, and her father farming was a certainly a job often, but it was on their own terms and certainly less than 40 hours of hard labor a week. This was during the same time that Flint was upending the manufacturing model with the establishment of the UAW about 45 miles down the road. So, there's context to all of this. It's not like these guys working in the factory didn't understand what their physical limits were. Yes, we can certainly put in a lot of hours of work in a week, but parts of American culture used to know how to balance it and what was reasonable. I don't know if something like the UAW would have happened if car manufacturing set itself up on the east coast --which had been exploiting workers quite harshly since the dawn of the industrial age and where urban life was actually a lot more demanding and competitive. The agrarian legacy of labor expectations lasted well into the American 20th, 21st century. Anyway, you can also look the lives of USA farmers in the 18th and 19th century as well. Assuming they avoided disease and dramatic injury, the quality of life was actually pretty good. Lots of recreational time while waiting for things to happen seasonally. It was actually normal to go to bed early, wake up in the middle of the night, spent some hours just relaxing or socializing, then going back to bed 'til dawn. Sort of a reverse siesta. Farmers in the States (and most USA citizens used to be farmers) played by their own rules as they decided how and when to do what they needed to do. 2/3rds of our social history was a result that rugged individualism, so if you've ever been curious why Americans culture is the way it is, there's a clue... I'd say Americans and Aussies have a very common kinship... but I'm rambling now. Time to get back to a corporate edit and suck on some irony.1 point -
Sony a6300 is newer and uses s-LOG2, its not a fair comparison. Also its obvious HEVC + NR doing something stupid, we all know video mode have NR by now. However if you take a picture at 3200ISO, there is no blue streak ISO artefacts like in video. So its clear that its the NR and in-camera processing causing these artefacts. You might argue 28 megapixels versus line skipping, but even at the highest ISO I cannot see these streaks, something is going on with the in-camera processing of the video. And we need to shut it off because the 3200 ISO looks usable if the stupid NR just "#&&%¤ off.1 point

All fair and well, discussable but not the main point I was referring to. Heres my concern: by mixing transgender and other minorities with woman in the equality debate, you are simply draging womans rights down, leaving them debatable and attaching a certain level of ridiculousness. They are 50% of worlds population.. trans people are what? 0.1? No, I don´t think they have the same right of awareness. Women do not have an obligation to help everyone, they will only come out as losers as your example so finely presents: That Austrian music award: 0 Woman won a price, even in the femal section the winner was Conchita, a man (and plz don´t be fooled to think that the best just happened to be man) I have never heard of that discussion about St. Nicholas and his beard, and I agree, if true, it is simply face palm worthy. On the other side, there are customs with a questionable origin.. I think you do know the game "wer hat Angst vorm schwarzen Mann?" Is it a tradition worthy keeping? Yes, in the museum of folk studies.. So, back to Ghostbusters. It has nothing to do with beeing politically correct (I know you agree with me here). It´s just a female crew which happens to be so unbelievable disturbing. I just wanted to highlight the fact it sparks the "what´s next" debate is a sneaky way of patriarchy defending their lands.1 point

Yes the author never said outright what Roland's race was but there are many parts where his race was alluded to (Roland having blue bombardier eyes, Eddie thinking he looks like a gunslinger from a spaghetti western) and other parts where it can be logically deducted (Detta's instant hatred of him and Eddie, she even mentioned a body part of him and Eddie being white in one instance). Yeah you can say that even after all that clues you still can not be 100% sure and that's true, but that's only technicality. What matters is that King portrayed Roland in a way that led us to think of the character as Caucasian. PS: it doesn't matter that this cast is endorsed by King. What is he supposed to do? Criticize the choice and makes himself look bad under the political correctness machine that is our world today?1 point -
That's the beauty, it shouldn't matter, because your project ultimately isn't working in C-Log colorspace. And the assumption is that you're basing your corrections offa the waveform/vectorscope within your project (not the footage) read-out as well-lit skin should appear already color corrected. That doesn't really change, as Larry states: our brains are programmed to know three colors: blue skies, green grass and skintones. Working with greyscales and the skintone line allows us to have a reference that shouldn't look off. Of course these are just guide values and ranges and apply to well-lit skin, which might not be the case in your scene, or perhaps you were shooting the Hulk or some fellow from Avatar. But you could correct a whole scene, just by nailing bare well-lit skintone. So you do have to eyeball the ultimate tweaks. But those general values should get you darn close. The video that goes with it shows it nicely I think... You might want to check this Color Correction Handbook by Alexis van Hurkman : http://www.amazon.com/Color-Correction-Handbook-Professional-Techniques/dp/0321929667 who talks in great depth about this. The actual referenced book in the video: the Encyclopedia of Color Correction is from 2006, the later Handbook (2nd ed) from 2013. P.s. I'm no authority on color correction or Canon footage, I'm just a guy who conviently comes across the helpful stuff of others.1 point

I've bought/rented the a7s, a7sii, a7rii, fs5 and the fs7 recently. The only one I've kept is the fs7- with firmware 3.0 it feels finally like a finished product. I'm glad I didn't buy it when it first came out . It's a fantastic camera once you manage to understand the menus and overcome the ergonomics. The images are fantastic and xavc-I is a great codec in 10 bit. The rest are good but just didn't seem to give me the performance for the money. I've actually really enjoyed using Panasonic cameras again because of the easy to use menus, touch screens etc. They seem to have a similar concept as canon - obviously they don't have anything to really compete with a c100 but their prosumer range is very good for the money. Unfortuantely my clients require/love slow mo or I would be all over the canon cinema line. Give me a c200 with 1080p, 120fps, 10 bit and the ergonomics of the c100 and I'd happily pay £5000-6000 for it. The 1dxii looks great but I really need nds, xlrs etc too .1 point

DPStewart reacted to Andrew Reid for a topic
Canon have a knack for this. When all around them is a circus of silly menus, bad ergonomics and underperforming images given the raw power under the hood, Canon with their underperforming specs have over-performing images with very good automatic white balance, well thought out menus and no frivolous stuff to get in the way on a shoot. I like the simplicity. Clearly you get a lot more colour information in a 300Mbit or 500Mbit 4:2:2 file like on the XC10 and 1DC, plus it helps the colour science is bang on in Canon LOG unlike in S-LOG. Clearly Sony know something is wrong otherwise they wouldn't have added 3 separate S Gamuts to the FS5 for different WB temperatures. Sony seem hell bent on squeezing every last drop of dynamic range and colour gamut out of the image, then packing it into as small a file as possible... the end result is a bit of a car crash. The A7S II was almost the 'dream camera' wasn't it... but I've barely felt compelled to use mine... I keep picking up my NX1 instead. That's because the body design of the A7S II is soulless, feels awful in the hand - it has the ergonomic charm of a brick. They went backwards from the A7S and that wasn't exactly perfect to begin with. Please Sony hire some designers from Fuji or whoever were responsible for the NX1 body at Samsung. Then sort the menus out - it isn't rocket science. I think they underestimate the importance of this... the shooting experience. I feel a little bit guilty when I see someone struggling through a shoot with a Shogun bolted onto the top of a small Sony mirrorless camera... great specs and we should support the push, in the face of Canon's paralysis... but it's a horrible shooting experience isn't it...1 point -
Yeah, I've been pursuing this issue with my lenses quite a bit recently. I don't yet fully understand all of the optical science being discussed but the common factor of fewer elements seems to hold true, and is useful as a general guideline considering that we're looking at a lens that is well designed optically in all the other important areas. Basically I look for the following: Lenses that are widely reviewed to be very good, but also happen to have as few elements as possible within them. So far the author's claim that this will be a lens with better 3D characteristics has held true in my experience. To what extent the camera is playing a role I don't know - but I suspect it's at least a bit. To my eye ALL Nikon Digitals seem to suffer enormously from the "flat" effect compared to Canons. To the point that despite owning a lot of Nikon glass (all of it falling into the fewer elements older design category) I feel I would never buy a Nikon camera.1 point

Actually yes (and sorry because I have a BA in anthropology) - this was how the majority of the world operated for roughly 70,000 years. There was no farming. There were no lords or slaves. We lived tribal-based. And we worked 20 hours about a week. The world of today is based on the simple fact that life became unsustainable with the increasing population growth. Not enough nuts on the ground. Hunting animals was actually more done recreationally, as it wasn't easy back then with rudimentary tools to hunt down animals that are faster than us and stronger than us. Agriculture started because of the population increase. This is when different structures of society formed. In China, it was more a rent-based farming structure. Rice was the main crop. You would have your own rice paddies, and give a cut to the person who owned the land. In Europe, it was feudal. Most people were serfs. You worked for a king. The world of today is run primarily by the military-industrial complex, as president Eisenhauer mentioned. Our lives are dictated by those who have the biggest guns (nuclear weapons) and the most money (corporations). We can't ever go back to Hunting/Gathering. There are simply too many people and not enough resources. It's this world we were born into. We can choose to run and participate in our countries in a fair and just way, such as many European countries and Australia/New Zealand, or side more with the USA, Russia, and China, which run their countries based on fear.1 point -

The GH4, which I have told you a bunch of times, is the sweet spot, in my opinion, of your portfolio. I can only imagine that it with a speedbooster would be a perfect match. If you're looking to test it out on the cheap, pick up the G7 and the XL... Andy Lee is getting some great results and swears by it. Do they really make the image/lens infinitely better?1 point

As usual, the Sony has some flashy specs, but the Panasonic will be more usable.1 point
