Panasonic G7s on the set of the movie 'Pandora' yesterday for a pre production lighting test I was doing , Metabones XL Speedboosters , Gini Rigs cages rods lens supports and follow focus , Nikon 28-70mm and 80-200mm , Libec Tripods - they are still building the set so plastic on the floor so we dont ruin it!!

  4. Just finished my first Music Video, not exacly as I planned it would go, had some setbacks on filming and what not, but yet still pleased with how it turned out. Everything was shot on the NX1 and the aerials on the P3. Was a great challenge, doing something as "big" with such a tight budget, but loads of fun ! Let me know what you guys think =) Also, to anyone interested, heres the band iTunes page, they got some great songs =) https://itunes.apple.com/pt/album/new-dawn/id953049235?app=itunes&ign-mpt=uo%3D4

  5. I probably should have stayed away from this topic, but I found the article so utterly revolting that I just couldn't help myself. Its difficult to even begin a thorough critique, and I'm not going to do it here. Suffice to say that he relies almost entirely on non-standard, non-optical terminology (e.g., 3D, tonality, micro contrast, flat), and he never bothers to define these terms in a precise and unambiguous way. Lenses can be fully characterized by things that are well-defined and can actually be measured, such as MTF, veiling glare, distortion, transmission vs. wavelength, etc.. Why rely on pseudo-scientific nonsense when proper characterization methods are well established? He then goes on to show images that supposedly illustrate his points, but none of the images are actually carefully done comparisons under fixed lighting conditions, post processing, etc., so they are absolutely worthless as far as I'm concerned. He also makes a bunch of ternary diagrams that make absolutely no sense at all - "line of realism"??? WTF??? And his obsession with the number of elements in a design is absolutely bizzare.

  6. Ok here is a little comparisons. In the sky of the very first shot its visible straight away imo. The grain is almost fully preserved on Vimeo but turned to crap on youtube. (watch in 1080p of course)

    Fs100 in 2015

Yes... "s" is lower case when it should be uppercase like this: FS100 Also he is a time traveler from the past who has traveled into the future to ask us about a camera. Very sensible move! I always try to do the same before buying my cameras as hindsight is golden.

  9. Indeed. Add to that the consideration that video is moving into a post-technical world, I think. Not that tech is unimportant and the foundation of video, but the fact that even the base-line of stuff will be soon be more than "good enough" and video tech in general will become a raw commodity. In less than a decade you're going to have just about everyone in developed countries shooting 8k on their phones and easily putting it online through any number of services. From there it becomes less of "how awesome is your video tech" and what sort of advantage do you offer that allows me to share it? How can I grab eyeballs with my content and can I do it better with hubbub.com vs. kablooey.com? How the files get served, how information is controlled, how can I monetize my stuff with your service, etc. The tech side will be a low priority.

  10. I sent them email that SDK they provided is not for camera itself but just for remote control. I have asked them about NX1 SDK again but I really do no believe that they have it or they will provide it... but better than nothing.

  11. The sway of the background, yeah I see what you mean - works artistically in some cases. Sounds ridiculous but it's true. Rare case though. As you can see the image is stunning but I wish Sony would stop putting cameras out there with such stupid flaws such as overheating, rolling shutter and pixilated focus punch-in, they'd be so much better if they had a Canon-like bullet proof reliability about them. It's reaching a critical point now. I need to enjoy my Sony shoots more than I do otherwise I will sell the whole lot (A7S II, A6300, FS5) and get a 1D X Mark II.

  12. on paper the f3 has less dr than the a7s and the a7rii, but imo I'm seeing more usable dr from the f3. the roll off of blown highlights feels more gradual. shadows also feel cleaner and more refined- even on the 35mbs internal - which I happen to think is more durable than the xavc-s 50mbs of the a7 range.

  13. There's been a lot of discussion about this on the Mu43 User Forum. In short: shoot with good technique, use a sharp lens, and you can print large with very little worry. Don't let the numbers scare you.

  15. Look closely and you'll see that the image on the left says 'T1' where the right one says 'H2' which I think might be more like the CAME-TV Mini 3 as found here: http://www.came-tv.com/camemini-3-3axis-gimbal-camera-32bit-boards-with-encoders-p-810.html . It connects from the center across the sides rather than with a single side arm (which however would provide the pistol grip option). Ah, yeah, I forget for a 2nd you'd have to consider import fees either way. That... blows. I think there's definitely something to the fact that a heavier set-up has like more momentum, so in turn lets less outside influences/variables affect it. But then again, we have drones and they have to fly with the lightest payloads possible and there's some way smooth motion going on there, so it might just be how the platform is handled, how the profiles are set up and how the controller and motors go about their things. Again, I haven't had any of these, so I can only comment on what I've seen and what my gut feeling says. I love the M43 format. I had given fullframe a thought when the 5DmkII and mkIII were a thing, but there's a couple of things... size, not just the body, the bloody lenses you'd have to throw in front to cover that sensor (that's also why I haven't jumped on the A7-series). As well as the price. Like I mentioned, I like sensible and well-considered choices, but I'm not sure spending 3000+ EUR on a camera is getting me that 3000+ worth in value back for what I do (I see that better spent on premo lenses). I do however like my D5300's APS-C sensor. I guess because it's similar to S35 and it renders nice organic looking footage I suppose. But I'm team mirrorless all the way, so no more mirrored experiences for me, I like you D5500 and D750, but I think it's best if we just stay friends. It's not you. It's me. And all that. Yeah, MFT/M43/M4/3 (I still don't know the appropriate abbreviation), for me it is a sensible choice. You don't spend tons on a new camera. There's a plethora of native lenses in all kinds of price ranges. You can adapt just about anything. It's compatible with focal reducers. It's an innovative mirrorless system so you get great features. And one of the most important reasons personally indeed: it's just so conveniently compact. A Panasonic G7 with Zhongyi 25mm f/0.95 would weigh close to nothing and would hardly take up any space at all. Look at that (from the ZY Optics website). Would you just look at it: But yeah, no sensor stabilization unlike the recent A7-step-up models or Olympus. And you do fall short in terms of stills performance as well as lowlight capability. There I'd actually wish we'd see a APS-C sized sensor like we have in Nikons. If Nikon would only make a sweet trouble-free mirrorless version of the D5500. Perhaps with built-in image stabilization and 4K. But oh well, enough about camera systems in a pistol grip gimbal thread. Yeah. I believe I did see them mention on FB that the H2 doesn't replace the H1+. It's an additional option. So I can indeed imagine them coming out with an updated H1². I don't have any special insider's information. So I don't know what will come, what will happen with pricing or anything. Just sleep on it, really think about if you need it or just want it and ultimately do what feels right.

  16. Well, I couldn't find a reason not to take a punt on a f3 that was going too cheap. ended up getting a fully unlocked, rgb/slog PMW-F3 for just under £1400 with a full rig/riser setup, and a few different mounts. I have to say, I'm blown away by how this camera captures light. gonna be taking a 3g sdi out into a pix240 for 444 uncompressed, or into a a newer recorder for prores 4444.

  22. NAB is only a month away. Want to place a bet on when those NAB 2016 cameras will ship? lol Be crazy if they don't announce any cameras at all :-P Maybe if instead they announce a cheaper EVF (yes please!) and a 7 inch Video Assist that does 4K?? Plus a URSA Mini 4K variant with a MFT mount. No new cameras but did those three things instead, then I'd be very happy! :-D

If you can spend double (or triple) then a Sony F3 will be a way better deal. But at least now there are E mount adaptera with a variable ND filter built into it that you could use with a FS100

  24. Im finding references of sensor read out in the fimware. But without full data Im not sure if things can be changed. If this sensor is similar to the S5KVB2 or a different roll out. Having the data sheet would shed some light. The cmosis cmv12000 and cmv20000 are both global and rolling and its implemented in code which readout it does. Unfortunately the S5KVB2 data sheet is not something that is attainable and if it was Im sure it would be under nda. But Its all things to test once I have it all sorted. My notes are filling up pages.

  25. Regarding focus point hacks, is there any way to implement: 1) control the size of the AF focus box in video mode, and 2) be able to view the AF focus box as it tracks subjects in continuous focus (or face detect) in video mode? (similar to the GH4)

@ Dayraven, the fact that people were discussing that notion in an attempt to somehow rationalise the horrendous rolling shutter performance (in the off chance that they purchased the cam) is funny enough for me. I'm sure no-one in their right mind really thinks it's "OK" . @Kisaha, I agree you can't have it all for a super low price. What I'm talking about is a premium APS-C sensor camera offering, in an A7 package. I'm sure there's a market for this. Lets see if the a7000 comes out soon and what it looks like.

  28. Yea Mattias. I really loved having a camcorder when I started. It was so easy to use and so many features. Look at what we have to go through to make work audio, connectors, viewfinders, rigging, and my favorite, parfocal. Many of these unavailable or poorly realized until you get up to major bucks. All of it to get a superior image to cheaper camcorders. I would love an under 5k camcorder that was ready to go out of the box and had a great image. Good to see if the jvc has it. Whatever the features it has to have a great image.

    Great Modern Lens Article!

While there is a real rendering difference between the Sigma and Nikkor, there's a lack of logic in the conclusions. The difference in rendering could be due to the low lens count, or maybe the coatings or lens curvature changed between the designs. There are multiple factors and # of lens counts just a coincidence. This is like observing birds migrating in the south during seasons and then concluding that the birds bring with them the heat.

  30. Just curious. Had anybody put up a pre-order anywhere and could it be that they're slowly shipping out right about now? See, I was randomly checking stock situations at different stores and the local one I bought my Video Assist at suddenly has changed from 'ships in 31+ days' to 'In stock'... however, all other shops got nothing and are still accepting pre-orders. Haven't found any other 'ships in x days' items on the site either, everything appears to be in stock which is pretty unlikely too, so now I'm thinking it might just all be bollocks and some backend/system/database fault. But it be nice to know. I know CVP sometimes had pre-orders running in the past because of the backorder, but were slowly shipping out items out whenever they got a handful of units in (Blackmagic does this so randomly, stores have no idea until something pops up for delivery I believe). But they seem to post exciting news like that on their social media, and non about the BMMCC yet: https://www.facebook.com/cvptv / https://twitter.com/cvpgroup . I kinda have become 'A6300? Fuck it. I'll get a BMMCC and G7', so I gotta admit I'd get one if they have some.

    Sony a6300 4k

All good in theory except the 1080p mode is soft and not veery good IQ at all in comparison to A7 series 1080p or other cameras (GH4 etc.) This thread cracks me up reading about rolling shutter being OK as you can use it "stylistically"... You can also use an miniDV camera stylistically, why don't we all get one of those next? Sony has tried to cram some great features into an awkward frame and as an end result made some half baked crippled mess. Lets hope the a6300 successor will fix these issues. Should I start a6400 rumours already??? :D p.s. I don't understand why Sony doesn't just make their top of the line APS-C camera the same body as an A7ii (like 5D is to 7D). That makes far more sense to me, especially given the people I see who are most interested in it.

  33. The features that really distinguish it vs a GH4/DVX200/NX1/A6300/C100/AF100/FS5 (as those are its main "direct" competition), give them a thorough thrashing with your testing and investigations. Such as its streaming option for instance.

They put two S-Log profiles in, if they were marketing it purely to casual users, this would be a terrible decision. In fact, if they didn't want to broaden the reach of the sucessor to the best selling mirrorless of all time, then they wouldn't have included a lot of the features they did and priced it at least £200 cheaper.

  37. Awesome. I think it would be great for Convergent to release a 5Q. I put a 5" on the A7SII and I love having the big screen in front of my eyes. Just shot a piece on the FS7 recently. 10bit is absolutely awesome. Slog3 is fantastic with more data, awful on 8-bit. I wouldn't get the FS5 to use the rather poor XAVC-L... those high frame rates really need a great codec for professional work. As does the 4k. I'd only buy a major A-cam right now if it was future proof. Brilliant the FS700 will be for another 5 years at least!

  38. Awesome, glad to hear it. Do you have it on sticks or handheld? I'e always found handholding the FS700 (with no rig) a massive pain. The C500 has had a price drop in the UK... just under £7k +VAT. With a 7Q, seems like it would be an attractive purchase for Canon lovers. I'm keeping an eye on the FS5 and 7Q+ options. I love that body.

I saw on the youtube title 'P+S' and assumed you;d used a P+S 35mm adaptor, and was amazed by the image quality - i've not seen much dof adaptor stuff that comes close to Forbes, but I was impressed and thought about looking for a cheap one to pull apart and see what they were doing with theirs, see if i could learn some tricks. then I realised it was infact a 'point and shoot' rather than a P+S 35mm adaptor. Regardless, each camera looked lovely.
