  1. Ever since the first DSLR started shooting video there has been one dream, the functionality of a camcorder with the sensor and lens mount of a DSLR. All in an affordable package. This might be just that. JVC has lended me the camera for a few weeks to try out. What Im mostly interested in is if: Its as good as the specs makes it out to be. If it can be both a true Run n Gun camera and something for cinema. If it is the ultimate camera for vintage lens junkies Regarding the specs, here is what cought my eye. MFT Mount S35mm Sensor 4K 4:2:2 HD Log Prime Zoom External Controls Built In NDs XLR First Impression It is light and small but doesn't feel cheap or flimsy. I would say it feels just like theses DVX type camcorders always does. Not 5D rugged, but solid, maybe a bit more solid than a FS100. Setting it up was super easy and intuitive, I mean its a camcorder... its great.. its like riding a bike Getting all the features I want like zebra etc went fast, they where all exactly where you would suspect them to be. The ND wheel feels nice, so does most of the controls and buttons. The audio wheels are clickless, thats a tiny complaint but no deal breaker. The first lens I tested was a m4/3 12-42mm. Its the kit lens from my GFs GM1. It worked and surprisingly it only had some vignette at the long end in s35 mode. In other words its both a normal MFT zoom and a s35 wide angle. It also turns out that there where sensor size stops between s35 and MFT! I hate to say it, but thats all I have time for this first evening. First test and some downloadable J-Log will be up tomorrow. Meanwhile, here are some pics.

  2. Did a side by side with my Pocket & Micro. BMPCC Speed Booster + Sigma 18-35mm. Here's what I saw. No earth-shattering differences but differences nonetheless. My feeling is that you would *have* to view them side by side to know which was which. • Noise is mildly reduced on the Micro and a touch more monochromatic. • Moire is also slightly less aggressive on the Micro. Maybe 20% less? • Micro exposes a hair lower than the Pocket. An adjustment of -.15 on the exposure slider in DaVinci on the Pocket footage brought them in line. • Slight color difference between the two. An adjustment on the tint slider of about 6 or 7 points evened them out.

  3. I contacted Sigma directly about this after very little valuable data came out at WPPI. Their response is that yes, indeed, video AF with the MC-11 and 18–35 1.8 and/or 50–100 1.8 will function just as any other of the newer Sony lenses do on the a6300. This news, if it turns out to be true, will make my year. I will make sure I have a Sony at NAB next month and test this personally. I sold my A7R2, but not without major hesitation. I updated my review on the a6300 here when I did a shoot without using the camera's internal compression and the camera still overheated. Recorded to an Atomos Assassin, climate controlled indoor environment the whole time and the camera temperature warning came on after about 90 minutes of off and on use. That's sad. I updated my review here to warn people about more than the jello. My new favorite name for the camera is "jello in a toaster". I'm kind of hoping it becomes a thing and people stop referring to it as the a6300 and use my pseudonym instead.

  5. for rolling shutter, i want to be able to stack the cameras on top of each other. haven't done that yet. for battery life I didn't time it out but I'd say it's in the neighborhood of 2.5 times longer than the BMPCC battery would last.

  6. The differences between UHS-2 and UHS-1 are vast. In looking into what card slot the nx1 contained there was quite a lot of info on how they run. The UHS-2 has 8 or so extra pads to do the data rate it is designed for. There could be numerous reasons for the failure. But the max datarate of UHS-1 is 104MB/s So UHS-2 is a must for any of the firmware mods I am going after. More testing is needed though for sure. See how close we can get to the max of UHS-2 write.

  7. The NX1 is far better with vintage glass than a Canon. More options to choose from as well.

  9. Welcome to my rolling review of the Sony A6300. Like the rolling shutter of the A6300 this review takes a long time to get from the top to the bottom so grab a hot drink (be careful not to overheat) and enjoy the ride... Read the full review on EOSHD here

    Guess the setup?

The cheap one is an iPhone with the moondog labs adapter or a gopro, or something with a ton of rolling shutter. :P Are you gonna tell when we guess it right?

  12. If you needed a body now, I would get an NX1. It's more of a complete package with longer battery life, good ergonomics, no overheating, great image, etc. As of today's date, the NX1 gives you a better shooting experience. Don't worry about an eco-system or an investment. Cameras are meant to be used, not collected. Sony's future system upgrade path won't fix the current flaws of the A6300 (i.e. no touchscreen, poor handling, rolling shutter, etc). You can use an NX1 until it dies after the warranty is over, and then maybe look at a A6300 successor. Sony make some really questionable design decisions, and the A6300's deal breakers are too hard to ignore.

  14. Your calculation is correct, but this my mastake makes it even more exceptional the processing power of the samsung nx1. My experiment done with Samsung nx1 + Sd card GOBE 64GB 95MB / S read. Test 1, 15fps- raw28 + jpeg super fine (40MB for both), buffer full, and camera stop after 131 files (600MB/s continuos shooting for almost nine seconds). Test 2, 15fps, super fine Jpeg, 6480x4320, 143Mb / S, never full buffer, camera continuos shooting without stopping. Test 3, 15fps, super fine Jpeg, 4682x2592, 62MB / S, 16: 9 aspect ratio, camera never full buffer, continuous shooting without stopping. This test is proof that the system software and hardware of the camera are capable of internally recording unbelevable 143MB/s (with possible peaks of 600MB/s) and can shoot 30fps at 4682x2592 jpeg format super fine (124MB/s) without any problems!!

  15. I'm not sure there's is a massive difference. Other than battery life and payload, the H2 has encoders. For me the H2 was just a little bit more expensive due to free shipping and expensive shipping on the DS1 (to Norway). The H2 just seems a little bit more refined with all the right features (for me), but maybe the biggest reason I ordered one was the optional 2-hand handle. The DS1 seems like a great option though. I guess we know more when Dave Dugdales' review is out, or any one else for that matter. Shipping started yesterday so we will have more answers soon... The new models are coming so fast since the Nebula 4000, so my advice would be too not buy unless you feel the price and features are right (obviously!). Also the H2 is for DSLR's so there's probably gonna be a smaller (cheaper?) version within the next 6 months... who knows!

  16. I am having such a love hate relationship with this camera. There is so much that is superb and some a pain rolling shutter, and some( the bloody overheating) that i don't think i can live with. The still images at 3200 in difficult light are astounding, as Andrew has said the grain structure is indeed film like, better than my 5d mk3, there is no color noise that i can see and a nice organic sharpness. i would put this camera ahead of my 5d mk3 in low light see attached images at 3200 5.6 on the standard cheap 16 to 50. The 5d mk3 would definitely exhibit color noise in the shadows in this scenario. The same in 4k at 3200 is astoundingly good for my money, i can shoot in almost any situation at 3200 2.8 at 25p and to have such a clean picture this is a real plus for this money., but the bloody overheating, If I new this could be fixed with firmware I would hang on, but i don't think so, people talked about overheating with the a6000 but i never experienced this, so this is a new thing for me with cameras.

  18. The camera is limited by the bus speed of UHS-2 which is 312MB/s 2496Mb/s Fastest card is currently the sandisk extreme pro at 250MB/s 2000Mb/s So there is much more to go until we reach that. Should be enough for what I am looking into. And remember, higher bit rate, lower compression, less math the processor needs to do, so less work and less heat. Theoretically the limit is high, and if you look at the dp review of the canon 80d and the nx1 their new low noise tech is still miles away.

  19. Andrew, bitrate has been hacked at 2.5K by Vasile. Need him to get back to tell us the method to do so. What I'm curious about is how is the rolling shutter in that mode? 2.5K + Samsung Color + great rolling shutter performance is a dream camera.

  21. 25fps in jpeg, 4608x2592, aspect ratio 16:9, picture quality "super fine", has a bit rate of about 100MB/s. 25fps in jpeg, 6480x3640, aspect ratio 16:9, picture quality "super fine", has a bit rate of about 170MB/s. The Vasile hack has demonstrated that the Samsung nx1 is able to shoot video over 150MB / s so we are not very far from a new Magic Lantern for Samsung Nx1.

  22. I've had it for 2 weeks now and just wrapped my first paid gig with it. This is definitely not an A-cam. It overheats very quickly in 4k. I used it in 90 degree weather for about 20 minutes and got a heat warning. I tried to keep recording and ended up getting black/corrupted frames. The cam also reverted my memory card to "read only", requiring me to re-format it once I had dumped the footage. The 4k rolling shutter is so bad that it ruins my attempts at post-stabilizing 4k footage because it warps the image too badly. And there's no IBIS so good luck with Rokinon primes. Regarding the lowlight image, I disagree with Andrew's endorsement; I find the in-camera noise reduction artificial-looking. It creates blocky patches that resemble MPEG compression artifacts. But I still want to use the a6300 for a few reasons. First, it's small. I can easily mount it on a small gimbal. Second, autofocus. It's really good. Maybe not as good as Canon, but it can track a moving face in all but the dimmest of light or heaviest backlight. The AF is ultimately very usable, especially on a gimbal. Third, it's relatively cheap and (theoretically) weather-sealed. Which means I don't feel as scared doing dangerous stuff with it. Finally, it uses APS-C lenses, which means it stays small even with lens attached. You can put the cheapo 16mm pancake on it and it's almost pocket-sized. So while I wish Sony would fix the glaring issues with this cam, I'm gonna keep using it for a few months in anticipation of something better.

  25. Hey guys, discovered that the OIS calibration is safe to perform in the DEV menu. Hit it accidentally when I was exploring the menus. Takes about 30 seconds to calibrate then will say "DONE!" on the screen, you have to hit left on the wheel to exit the calibration. Worked for my 16-50, did it twice and performing great. Panning performance when using it has improved slightly. So if you ever have OIS issues with the 16-50s it might be able to sort it out!

  26. Im considering getting an URSA mini (and I now have an NX1), because it has RAW, 10 bit color,12 stops DR, 4k 60fps and the amazing global shutter...thats enough to keep them both on a separate league IMO.

  38. MB (megabytes) and not same as Mb (megabits = usual unit for bitrate). 170MB/s (megabytes per second) are 1360Mb/s (megabits per second)... so it is completely different level of bitrate. Vasile hack provides +100Mb/s ( I do not want to brake his request about "not mention" bitrate :-)) so it is higher than default bitrate but still much lower than 170 MBps/1360 Mbps.

  39. Rebel? Maybe if it were mirrorless and any good, but nah, I'm talking about the crossbreed, so much more like a GH4 than a 600D. The only thing I'd want from a Canon is the color science and dual pixel AF, the rest is pretty worthless to me. Besides... you really think ML will bother with newer cams? I love how the E-M1 holds in the hand and the dials operation, it has IBIS and also fine color and organic rendering. NX1, nice color as well, super duper chip infrastructure and processing, no overheating, only a glimps of what the hardware is actually is capable of made its way into the firmware possibilities. APS-C, but not really a huge benefit on pixel level concerning noise/sensitivity. Yet APS-C would be pretty cool, we've discussed a possible premium GH-camera with APS-C sensor much like the JVC GY-LS300. GH4 has that vari-angle touchscreen, ISO/WB/+/- dials on top I find pretty genius. Features that include an anamorphic mode for example. The BMPCC doesn't have much going on for itself, except that it is small and the footage is outragingly awesome. Imagine an actually practical camera crossbreed with the whole shebang just mentioned and writing stuff away as DNG RAW or ProRes. Wowowiwa. Yeah, I was kinda thinking A6300... but now... eh... maybe not. Then I was like: BMMCC... but then again... nah. So, now I'm not sure... maybe a 5DmkIII ML RAW after all! (Nah, won't happen either )

  40. Yes technically, Motion JPEG stores each frame individually so its literally no difference between spitting JPEG's out into the SD card or simply into a container, only difference is that there are more files and more of a mess just spitting them out into the SD without container, and the container can also contain sound which it syncs by itself so you wont have to. LOG profile would still be useful for Motion JPEG, like I said earlier its not the same as RAW or as good, but its far better than H264 or HEVC for example in containing huge amount of information, just be aware of the massive file sizes the higher bitrates you go with it and much larger resolution. Here are two of the JPEG 15fps bursts, I will take some more when its day outside, these are high ISO do notice that Samsung's JPEG engine applies noise reduction to the stills even if you turned it off, however the noise is still far better than in the HEVC ones. I would also like you to notice how BIG these zip files are, for something that is just 1 - 3 seconds long, reaching 700mb - 1gb is quite a scary thought, each JPEG is however average 4.5mb in size shot with super fine compression. 2592p15 - 3200ISO - https://mega.nz/#!PN0zQIIQ!7tcNWhfTOKDsUYvqZNocFb9bpnMyChdTamdawx5gbzI 3648p15 - 4000ISO - https://mega.nz/#!WdFHkAgZ!8MoMydWK55KXkOnDLR5AlwFslkC4PjZ2YDr2LKSN8KY

  41. Well I used the A7R II and sold it. Non usable for me because of the issues you mention (ergonomics, RS, ...) but also price of the lenses and so on. Hopefully with the 5DIV we will have a touch screen, good Dual Pixel AF, nice 4K and even if I criticised them all the way I will get it. We always criticise canon but at the end of the day, 4 years after the 5DIII we still speak about it as the best DSLR ever for video (raw) and so many stills photographer critic the DR and so on but still use it at the end of the day because more reliable, better lens and colors than Sony and so on. Isn't that funny? Why a company cannot get best of both world between specs and ergonomics/basics????? Nikon are doing it in photo, but they are ridiculous in video (see D5/500...). Canon lacks the specs Sony the basics and ergonomics Panasonic not bad but who cares about M43? Want FF or minimum APSC. ..... I say let's create a camera brand at EOSHD with Canon ergo, Sony specs and so on

  42. JPEG's will have superior grading capability than HEVC, to match a Super Fine JPEG to HEVC the bitrate has to be so insane that grading that HEVC video is going to be a nightmare if you do not own a 50k dollar workstation, not to mention the HEVC codec in Premiere CC2015 is causing me more trouble and performance issue than I want to deal with, I rather spare a few GB of space and continue converting them to ProResLT. I rarely noticed banding issue with JPEG's in the NX1 either, some rare cases but that would just be the terrible JPEG compression algorithm that Samsung uses. If you want I can shoot a 15fps 6k in 16 by 9, 1 - 2 second video and you can have fun in whichever video editing software you use, from personal experience the JPEG's out of the camera have pretty damn good data in it, allowing me to pull some pretty amazing details out of dark areas and compress highlights, its no raw but its WAAAAY better than HEVC could probably ever do if you ask me.

  43. I was slightly considering this as a C-camera but I think it will just collect dust. I do love the monster specs from Sony, however there are many annoying issues to go with that as well. It would be ace to get a mirrorless or DSLR camera that shoots 2.5k, 10 bit, has high quality slow motion, decent DR. Lovely colour and a flexible mount. (Almost a Blackmagic!). I feel that top quality, affordable 1080p has been skipped for brittle, low bit-rate, marketing grabbing 4K. Little gripes aside, I think some people will get some great use out of the A6300.

  45. I finally bought my a6300 and I'm very keen to match it to colors of the NX1 and Canon ML RAW footage. What should be the best PP and gamma curve I should use to grade my footage and get the skin tones looking good? While S-Log 2 seems extremely popular, I have seen others recommend Cine4 for better/easier-to-grade results. Would also appreciate if there are links to resources that I can read up on all the different settings for log/gamma/pp. Thanks!

  48. I've been using the em100/EM5II for real estate "profile" videos. Lots of talking heads and such. Short shoots that last an hour or so. I've done close to 40 of them so far. While that real estate stuff isn't on my vimeo page, this one below is very similar in style and used the same em100/EM5II set-up: I don't have the EM5II spec sheet in front of me. I don't know what Ω it prefers, but it plays nice enough with the Sennheiser. I'm not going to say it is wonderful audio. I've got gear that does better, but it's not horrible either --and it works well enough for me to use it without any stress that it's going to fail.
