  1. How hard would it be to remove the block on the NX1 so that the Samsung Camera Manager app functions while using manual lenses? Would be great to have wireless live view while using non Samsung Glass. Thanks everyone! BTW, for anyone interested in developing, I am posting the link for accessing all NX1 firmware files again for ease of access. I usually grant access pretty quickly when a request comes in. Access the files here: https://drive.google.com/a/cmcfirm.com/folderview?id=0Bwt0uzFgEoRkQ2ZLOUJOM295UGM&usp=sharing The entire firmware history (v1.01, v1.10, v1.20, v1.21, v1.22, v1.30, v1.31, v1.32, and v1.40) for the NX1 is now archived in that link: Happy to help and really am impressed by what you all have accomplished thus far!

  2. Just a heads up, I purchased the pro version of Resolve to unlock the H265 editing. Unfortunately the program does not support the audio stream from the camera, so you will get great looking video, but will not get any audio on your clips!

That Voigtlander does look very tasty, damn! I inherited loads of lenses from my Grandad - kept them in a box for years until I started photography. Unfortunately, I became like you & in the end it becomes an addiction - I had too many & was spoilt for choice. Ended up selling stuff like crazy once I knew what sort of silly money things were going for: 3 Iscoramas (who would have known that they'd be worth stupid money years later!), full set of Contax Zeiss, full set of Nikon ai-s, both Angenieux zooms etc... The list was stupid in the end. I kinda regret selling some things (Angenieux zooms!) & am now in a pickle about whether to continue with my Super-Takumar set or to go back to Nikon ai-s? Got a lovely set of Russain glass, which I will not part with for love nor money. Really loving the Tokina AT-X Pro 28-70mm more than I thought I would - so close to the Angenieux at a snip of the price.

It's not necessarily a financial issue as it is a utilitarian issue. Since I only use the same 5 lenses, all within long wide to normal range, then why do I have a brand new Canon FL 135mm f/3.5 sitting in a box collecting dust?

It's easy selling great lenses, but you have to watch out that you don't regret it later on. I had 35mm and 90mm Leica R Summicrons from my film photog days that I sold for way more than I paid for them. Boy do I regret selling those lenses now!

It depends on the camera. .. For EM1 the 25 0.95 SLRMagic almost never left the camera. For the A7rii the CV 35 nokton gives me everything I need, range (35-105), macro, low light & shallow DoF.

  7. 4K is overrated. Especially since you started taking videos last week I wouldn't jump into a new camera just for that. For example I found the stabilization that EM1 offered was far more important in creating nice looking videos since my style is handheld with manual lenses. Others might have a need for good AF during video, or ability for a shallow DoF or lowlight performance or large dynamic range or .... All these things take time to find out and in the meantime 6D is a very capable camera that you can use to learn a lot. Shooting technique, framing, audio, editing etc can make a much much bigger difference than 4K. New cameras are always going to come and get cheaper & cheaper so no need to rush for something that you want but might not need... Anyways G7 is a great camera.

  8. As you guys probably already know, FilmConvert is having their annual NAB 25% off sale. That with Noam Kroll discount is a whopping 35% off regular price. I have had the trial plug in version in FCPX for about 6 months but due to my small screen, the Color Correction tool isn't easy on the eyes. And my slow computer brings FCPX to a crawl. But when I heard about the deep discount, I decided to give the Stand Alone version a try and I must say I really do enjoy it. With a neutralizing LUT applied during transcoding, I was able to bring the unedited, prores footage right into FilmConvert. With some quick and easy tweaks, I was able to get some very nice results. This one is the ungraded 4K image, from the Panny FZ300 that I converted to 1080p prores with EditReady... And here it is again with just a few tweaks with FilmConvert... Anyway, I really do like the program and was wondering if other users have the Stand Alone version, or the Plug In? If you use the Stand Alone, what workflow do you use... edit in NLE... correct and grade in FilmConvert?

  9. But they're heavy, large, and get really hot. If you're lighting interviews, LEDs are great, but yes an LED panel is no competition for a 2k Arri...

  11. Don't get LED fixtures. Get straight tungsten. The footcandle-per-dollar is generally better with tungsten as is the power-luminance density. Plus, focusable tungsten fixtures are significantly less expensive than their LED counterparts. Straight tungsten fixtures are probably the most versatile source, so they cover most lighting situations.

  16. Dave Dugdale just said he was having that problem with xavcs in Resolve. He said it was a Windows thing, and that there's a way to like rewrap the files so the audio reads differently and works, but that's essentially the same as transcoding, so defeats the purpose. Are you on Windows?

Another hands raise for the SLR Magic Hyperprime CINE 25mm T0.95. And yeah, I know the feeling. I probably have way too many myself. But I don't get myself in financial trouble because of it or anything, so honestly I don't really care, atleast I don't collect garden gnomes or tea bags or whatever. I feel like some lenses have such distinct character, that it's hard to deny it a place in your collection. There's always phases I go through that I like some lenses in particular, then I kinda get bored with the look or it doesn't fit the style I'm after and I go with some other ones. But it's always a nice moment of re-discovery to pick one up again. It's like finding some change in a coat's pocket 'ah, I kinda forget about that, woah, cool, what shall I do with it?!'. A lot of people would say: but doesn't the abundance of choice create complications, but I don't think this is the case, I think outspoken projects ask for outspoken lenses. And the other way around... certain optics can inspire a project in itself. Though, it can be very liberating to shoot with a LX100 and forget about everything else as well. But as a lens is a choice, so is picking up a premium compact camera or the choice to stick with just a 35mm on a project. So I can't really say choice is limiting, I think it's freeing. That said. If you have a financial struggle with it, that's another thing. With a tight budget it's a good idea to list your priorities and where your money's currently at, if there's too much money in lenses... then selling off a couple will get you new funds for a new camera body, light, sound, rig, etc. True that.

Yup, my 40mm Voightlander f2 is my favorite lens I have ever used. I occasionally flirt with the idea of buying a backup copy I enjoy it so much. Will never part with it. Took this photo today with it and anamorphic adapter. Wide open. I need to cull back my glass as well, more than half my glass I don't really shoot with.

SLR Magic 25mm t/0.95 by far. On both my GH3 and BMPCC. Once again, it's amazing how similar you and I are. Just the other day, I was going through my lenses trying to pare it down to 4-5 regulars. Now that I'm investing more in lights and sound, the extra revenue should really help soften the blow.

+10000, 40mm is the most natural focal lenght, it sits right at the spot were it changes from wideangle to tele.

That would be 35-50 plus 85-100 primes plus some macro lens on FF. With those 3 lenses I can make due. But yeah, at some point I had 8 lenses. Canon 17-40L, 24-70 2.8L, 70-200 2.8L, 35L, 85L II, 100L macro, 135L, EF 50 1.4 For photography it's easy. There's a possibility for Lightroom to make a statistic of used focal length and aperture. Then you only keep what you really use. If I had to have one single lens it would be probably a 40mm FF equivalent.

  23. Yeah PP is the only alternative. I'm calling their support on monday to ruffle some feathers, really bad to say you support H265 and have the ONLY camera that shoots to it not have audio support. It's a real shame to because the footage looks gorgeous in resolve.

  27. Of course there are lighter but stronger material, but as you say, dont be surpriced if its +$10k. Even the FS7 has the same plastic build. Im glad they didnt go that route, because then there is no way I could have bought it. But those are just my needs. BTW, there is a big difference in the build of a Cinema Camera or Bolex and the sub $1k bmpcc. So if you like the BM image that night be worth looking into.

  28. The thing I like most about Kinefinity is that they very obviously listen to what filmmakers want in their cameras. They've literally given everything you could ask for with the Terra, including a really decent, accessible price. Mother camera brands are largely segmented with their product range, and therefore got crippled one way or another - such as the FS5's "10 bit" 50mbps HD XAVC-L. Simply not good enough. Full frame with the KINE Enhancer too. This could be the best camera release in ages.

  29. Maybe I should add to this whole subject, that I don't always need or seek the newest tech solutions. Below is my current "focus assist". As everyone clearly can see this is as low-tech as can be. A cheap $20 loupe, a piece of cycle tire rubber and some velcro. (An old picture with my G6, but I still use it on my GH4). You just wipe the rubber around the monitor and you are ready to go . Works like a charm, diopter enlarges x3 and yes I see pixels and the cheap diopter distorts quite a bit, but I can nail focus every time and that's what matters. The thing is, I´m afraid that the monitors hinge will break some day.

    NAB 2016 = Boring

Plenty of good gear at the show but Ed's right. It's definitely the most boring NAB in recent memory. Several major products cancelled and not a single interesting major new camera from the big manufacturers. Kinefinity Terra looks good but we needed new stuff from Canon, Panasonic, Sony, Blackmagic, even a surprise announcement from someone like Nikon, JVC or RED and didn't get it!! I think the industry in general has reverted back to a boring pre-DSLR revolution focus on broadcast and high end production kit. Just look at Blackmagic!

  34. With all due respect to YouTube bloggers, a field I do enjoy sometimes actually, it's not my circus, not my monkeys, I don't care if they buy a million 80Ds, it doesn't make it a successful product for those with a more cinematic, higher image quality benchmark in mind.

  35. Yeah, but the ergonomics aren't really that relevant when you add a huge recorder to the back of the thing… The FS700 is the steal right now, you can get that whole rig for probably under 5k at this point. I would say that the Sony FS5 probably can get much nicer color, due to the S-LOG update, etc. The colors out of the fs700 are seriously tough, they were improved a ton in the fs7. Does this update enable 4k/120 burst? The FS700 can do this which is awesome.

  36. Quoted and usable DR are two very different things, and you'd find real world they're very close in terms of usable DR. FS700 for me comes close to, ergonomically, one of the worst supposedly 'pro' cameras I've ever encountered. It does have a lot of great features though. Sensitivity will be similar between the two, but the FS5 will be better at higher ISOs. Big distinction, I think, is that the FS700 is more or less sorta a 4k-geared camera, whereas the FS5 is sorta an HD geared camera. FS5 gives you 10-bit internally @ 50Mbps which you can't get out of an FS700. FS700's SDI output is also only 8-bit, so to get more than that you're forced to shoot raw.

  37. For a laugh, i'll break down this email from a salesman's/ executive producer's point of view. "Greetings! - denotes all times of day and suggests something festive is entailed. Yes, we actually exist and have a voice. - you don't know who we are but you did at some point, but you have forgotten. We are incredibly grateful and humbled by all the support. - OK, even if you don't remember us, everyone else does. (Classic 'humblebrag'). And because of that, we are only sharing the following email to you—our early adopter email list. - FYI, you are special and unique and part of a private club who got in first. Aren't you lucky? We have looked forward to sending this email for months. You should know that we will not publish this anywhere else. That means you are the first to know. - you owe us your attention because we have invested a lot of time on this product exclusively for your benefit, and you have such a unique opportunity here because we haven't told the world about it yet because you are our favorite person. When we tell everyone, we can't make any promises on your VIP status. I bet many of you have wondered, “What’s the deal with Craft?" There has been an outpouring of interest for Craft from all over the world and from all walks of life—from Hollywood, indies, corporate marketing departments, agencies, and amateurs. They have reached out by the thousands trying to figure out what we are working on. - (more humblebrag) My lord, have you been missing out! For over a year, we have been developing the Craft Camera—a new system that we believe will help users tell better stories. - we have developed a system to make you a creative genius, you are a craftsman and we are called Craft, geddit? On April 18th around 12pm EST, we will announce Craft Camera on craftcamera.com. This announcement will include initial information, a first glimpse of the Craft Camera, and we will start taking initial reservations. - Sshhh, listen, here are some hard facts. We are committing to a time and place for one time only. We will blow you away with a few seconds of footage and allow you to give us your credit card details, BUT only if you are on time and in the right place. Since Craft Camera is still in development, we won’t be releasing every single detail because we hope to get feedback from reservation holders before we publish final details. - in case you aren't impressed, don't worry, you haven't been given all the information and glimpses yet, be patient and get in line anyways. We will figure this spec stuff out eventually once we receive enough complaints to warrant changes. A reservation will require a $500 deposit, your name, email, and phone number. Reservations will only be available on craftcamea.com and will be 100% refundable. Your deposit will be deducted from the total price once you place an order at a later date. - (classic close) Absolutely no risk involved. But wait there's more... As a reservation holder, you will also receive a 10% discount off your final order along with some additional perks like first looks, priority reservations on future products and a few other surprises. - (classic time sensitive bonuses) Please note we are offering a limited number of reservations which is why we wanted you to know about this first. This means when we hit our limit we will stop taking reservations. No exceptions. The reservations are first come first serve and when the cameras ship, we will do so in the order that the reservation was placed. - remember, this deal is exclusive to you and time sensitive. This is urgent! The Craft Camera comes in 2 models. There are 4K and HD models with a price range between $699 and $2899 depending on the configuration. Initial units will ship late 2016. - (actual information, vague, but actual information). Comforting because facts make you feel good, right? But not to many or you will commit from informed deliberation rather than impulse, which is not cool for us. I will leave you with this—we believe there is a huge need for Craft Camera. We believe it is a revolutionary product that will give production alums a great tool to do things they couldn’t do before while opening up storytelling through motion pictures to a whole new generation. - (rehash of making you a creative genius theme) You will have an advantage amongst your peers. You will be Spielberg, or maybe Jim Jarmusch... at the very least. With that said, we understand Craft Camera might not be for you and...we are fine with that! We will still treat you with respect and we hope the same from you. - seriously, no pressure. I am truly humbled by all the support, and I hope you become a part of the Craft family. - (humblebrag,) we have heritage and will be around forever. Keep telling beautiful stories. - we are on your side, you artist you *pinches cheek*. Monies? What's that? Scott Brag(g) - Mr. S. Humble... Founder of Craft Digital Systems Inc. " - the absolute boss and the ducks nuts. That was fun (for me). Having sold stuff from Kirby vacuum cleaners to tvc airtime, its a trip down memory lane. I wouldn't touch this kit with a ten foot pole. A bit too sleazy for me. If it's a young company then I would ditch the bullet-benefit-close-bonus approach and just talk about the things you are trying to solve for your target demographic. Visuals, ergonomics, mobility, compatibility... etc. (even if its just your intentions, with no hard specs to announce)
