  1. "Continue to die" ... talk about over statement! You do realise that the report also says they made a PROFIT of $360m .... Profit, not sales, not income... Profit. Why do people throw out all logic just because a brand hasn't made the indie camera they want? Yes, they need to diversify, as both the camera and printer businesses are taking a hit due to mobile and internet tech, but they are still a massive company with fingers in all kinds of pies. They are still head and shoulders the pro choice of still shooters and have a heavy involvement in pro AV too. They are beginning to get into the niche imaging markets and no doubt have involvement in stuff like 3D printing and mobile sensor tech. They might be making less profit in one quarter (you know, 3 months), but dying... haha.... I think people actually want it to be true too, just because they haven't sunk as low in price as Sony and Lumix. Imagine that... wanting a huge brand to die out, just because they don't make the camera that ticks your very specific set of boxes. God love the internet.

  2. As one who shot 5d3 raw back in May 2013 with a camera that cost about as much as the a7r2, I figured what the hell. I can confirm this works perfectly with the a7r Mark II. I threw the grip on to see how long it'd run. I got 1 hour 4 minutes before I ran out of disk (64GB card). Keep in mind this isn't a "firmware" update or anything - it's simply a Playmemories app to install. Simple and easy and takes literally 3 minutes. Link to the "hack" app. https://sony-pmca.appspot.com/apps Thanks to this I can let my a7r2 run for a while now and not worry about it for long shoots. No overheating icon the entire time either. See attached pic of a7r2 w/grip...

  4. thanks, those settings got mentioned a couple time in this thread I believe. I own the 20mm and the 50mm 1.8 (cheap plastic version). both small, lightweight and convenient. I am a nikon d800 shooter so those are the only 2 I used and cannot compare them with other brands. Happy with them though. Gifs were too heavy and the quality was too bad so I had do opt for a looping youtube video instead. I uploaded the cinemagraphs here: https://www.behance.net/gallery/36514809/Cinemagraphs-Flavie-Lea Would appreciate your support by clicking the blue like button if you like them! here is a hd vs 4k screen grab (retouched)

  5. i don't think so. it would mean carrying two kinds of batteries and two kinds of chargers. and considering I'm usually packing everything into a Think Tank International carry-on bag, I try to keep it simple. this way I have one pool of batts to draw from for everything i shoot with -- Pocket, Micro, SmallHD 502's.

  6. As a long time lurker watching the progress happen and trying out some of the hacks my self here is a brief summary of main accomplishments. Current hack achievements in no particular order Increased bitrate on both NX1/NX500. So far there is no consensus on the optimal bitrate. Further testing is required by experience videographers who are good at analyzing footage. Added 2.5k full sensor readout with increased bitrate on NX500. I do not own an NX500 so I am not sure what is really happening with this hack. Perhaps someone else could fill in. Removed video record time limit on both NX1/NX500. This is something I haven’t personally tested as I do not need it but reports sound like it works perfectly fine and can be used to record videos that will fill up your card. Fully electronic (silent) shutter on the NX500. Not yet working on NX1 from what I understand. There are currently three main ways to apply hacks to the NX1/NX500. The original method by running in factory mode by running a script on the SD card root called info.tg that can run other apps such as Otto K’s keyscan The WiFi method. Similar to the blue tooth method below but more risky. The best method is the blue tooth method. This is done by modifying the file /usr/sbin/bluethd in camera to execute a scripts that can run whatever other program you want. Telnet (busy Box) can be run from the SD Card to remotely execute any command on camera. Alot of the built in camera commands have been figured out and you can now write scripts to make the camera do pretty much anything you want. Even I was able to written a few scripts . Current progress Lately (past few weeks) the majority of the activity has been around trying to remove the in camera NR for video. There has also been quite a bit of talk about creating a GUI for all the hacks. If you are a programmer and are interested in getting involved I think this is likely the area where you could really help out. If there is anything I got wrong or missed please don’t be shy and call me out on it

  8. I recently got an Olympus Pen-F. The debate was between the Pen or a Fuji (x100t, xt1, x-pro1/2 etc). Ive always loved Fujifilm, even the small sensored X20 is an absolute joy to take stills with (to bad I needed wifi). The stuff I wanted was, Larger than 1" sensor Range Finder styled Awesome in camera colors Wifi The reason I got the Pen-F instead is because its almost as good a range finder as the Fujis. Plus it has incredible IBIS for video. And I already have lenses and adapters for m4/3. Both of them have problems in video regarding aliasing, but for the BTS and home videos I will use it for its fine. If the X-t2 do in fact get 4K, so I can get aliasing free video, then I will upgrade. Maybe I will keep both the Pen and the Fuji... who knows, have a few months to deside. Any who here is the very first video test I did. All shot handheld, in auto, no color correction or grading of any kind. Like I said, Im not gonna use this camera for any serious video, grading, etc. Its my stills camera. And for that I love it. Its got great handling, lovely sound (yes thats important) and the baked Monochrome 2 is so sweet I don't have to use raw. Some say the Monochrome 2 looks a lot like Kodak Tri-X. To my eyes its at least not far off. Here is a pic with actual Tri-X and an Olympus Trip 35. And here is a Monochrome 2 from the Pen-F

  9. As Jim said, you can edit ProRes but not the DNG files. However, I use "Raw Photo Processor 64" (its a free download) to convert the DNG files to 16-bit TIFF files. RPP has the best Highlight retrieval of anything that i've used, it has 4 different curve types (Film-like, L*, Gamma & Colorimetric Gamma), Custom or Auto White Balance (which is v.accurate), a load of TruePaper & TrueFilm simulations and so much more. Oh, did I mention that its free! So no need for Resolve...

  11. Why, because i'm not an idiot? I don't own a Canon product (you have just bought one though, right?)... I don't give a shiny shite who produces the image making machine I use... I just cannot deal with the level of idiocy shown on here at times.... I'd post exactly the same if someone were trying to make a big deal out of the Sony quarterlies, Samsung etc.... Misinformation is not helpful to this industry, your blog or your forum.

  12. I can't even go into the futile use of your income analogy, you may as well use an analogy about pink snakes and bicycles, it is so ridiculously off. I would go look up phrases like "you have to spend money to make money" and "speculate to accumulate".... They are a bit more apt here. You did however underline my theory that people are actually willing Canon to fail, simply because they didn't make a certain camera that suits their specific needs. We all get a bit annoyed a feature hold back, pricing etc... But I am first and foremost a professional that uses tools to make money, so can respect products like the 1D-X II and C300 mk II and disregard the things that are not targetted at me, like the 800D.

  13. Tesla is a misguided comparison, and their reports read just like any other, all roses and rainbows despite the fact they can't actually sell cars at a profit. Cars are a money pit, and they likely will never be able to make a profit selling them. To produce them in significant enough numbers to make a profit means a large increase in production costs. Their losses would be much worse if Toyota hadn't essentially gifted them a shuttered factory. Canon has been profitable for over a decade and will still be profitable going forward - they also own about 40% of the digital camera market. Tesla has never made a profit and sells fewer cars in a year than Toyota sells in just two days, they're a tiny niche brand using cars to showcase their battery tech - so they can sell batteries and associated systems to others. They're never going to make a profit selling cars because of economies of scale, development costs are high, when you sell in small volume you don't move enough units to recoup costs. The money is in the batteries - that's why Musk built the Gigafactory. Tesla makes no profit, its selling all its cars at a loss, its burning its cash reserves, and its stock sells for $250 a share. Canon makes a measly $360m in one quarter (more profits than Tesla will make based on forecasts for another couple years) and its trading around $30. I know which stock I would buy (hint - its the one with the better price/earnings ratio). Tesla looks like a dot-com bubble/burst company that will sell off most its intellectual property (cars) to a Chinese conglomerate and just make batteries in a few years. Annual income didn't decrease by 39%, your financial ignorance is detrimental to whatever point you're trying to make. Canon is still the most profitable camera company on the planet, not sure what you're gloating about really other than the inability to read a financial report.

My all time favorite lens I have used is the Zeiss Ultron 50mm f1.8. Sharpness, colors, bokeh and character is amazing! Lots of others lens I would like to try on this list. Voigtlander 40mm f2 would be one I would like to try. I have the Voigtlander 25mm 0.95 and it's lovely.

  17. and one of his recent posts basically claimed the MK2 with raw was one of the best "forgotten cameras" for cinema. EOSHD likes tech and gets excited by the latest specs, but that doesn't always equate to the most balanced review... once the dust settles. I traded my 5D3 for an A7s and have hated it since day one... Everyone is different though. As soon as I can shoot 1080/60p raw on a Canon, I will move back.

  19. People really need to stop looking at quarterlies and making sweeping statements. You are trying to analyse a drop in profits without ANY of the variable overheads and cost info to hand. It is next to useless.... None of us know what outlay they made in that quarter in a certain segment, knowing that Q2 or Q3 will then show a significant gain because of that investment. You only have to look further down that article ... They purchased several companies, last year... Maybe some of those purchases skewed Q1's profits as they transitioned them into the main company?

  22. Get a second hand G7(non weather sealed) or a GH3(weather sealed) if possible; something like a rode videomicro or a cheap long wired lav -or both- and a gorillapod. Probably you can get all that for under 500$ in total. That will give you good quality video and sound and you'll be rolling in no time.

I think by far and by far the best ultra affordable option is the Aputure FineHD VS-2 monitor, however it is a little big... wish they had it available in a 5 inch option! http://www.newsshooter.com/2015/12/21/a-7-full-hd-hdmi-field-monitor-for-less-than-200-aputure-launch-vs-1-finehd-monitor/ Keep an eye out for the Nikon DL18-50 Has a fast f1.8 lens, large 1" sensor, shoots 4K, and has a *MASSIVELY WIDE* 18mm FF FoV!! :-o Much much wider than the 24mm on the RX100 IV, and better if you want to use it as a PoV camera with a very wide FoV. http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1234156-REG/nikon_26512_dl18_50_f_1_8_2_8_digital_camera.html Ohhhh..... that is one cool benefit of the BMD Micro over the Pocket!

    One Lens?

I guess in terms of that "one special lens," three items in my collection spring to mind: SLR Magic 25mm -- normal perspective, huge aperture, usable wide open, amazing bokeh, perfect build/mechanics. My #1 workhorse. Canon FD 35mm f/2 (concave front element) -- versatile focal length on full frame/s35, with amazing 3D pop. Doesn't match my other FDs, but it's definitely got that special something. Just watch for flare--it can't stand up to stray light at ALL. Minolta MC 58mm f/1.4 -- despite being one of the cheapest lenses I own, it's one of my most prized. Amazing portrait/close-up lens, dreamy wide open, crisps up at 2.8, like two lenses in one. Smooth bokeh and amazing transition from in focus from out of focus. I can pop it on any time for a look that's pure cinema.

  30. Yes, indeed - just check NX1/NX500 Hack video thread here. You can push shadows far more, image is slightly more detailed in darker parts... I will not come back to 80Mbit anyway :-). Bad thing is that biggest difference is in 1080p modes but safest useable working bitrate has to be lower for them: 4K30p- 180Mbits, no issues (I have recorded more than 30 minutes timelapse with it), the highest bitrate I can safely use... but depends on the card 1080p60fps - 180Mbits - no dropped frames and really beautiful image BUT there are sometimes weirdly corrupted frames, so best bitrate for me for this mode is 140Mbits (I have not seen any issue so far, but I am not 100% sure) 1080p120fps - I have got some dropped frames even with 110Mbit so best would be obviously 100 Mbits but unfortunately there is no other free slot for custom bitrate: you can define you own bitrate for Pro and HQ but not for Normal (Vasile's bitrate hack 2.0). In summary: each resolution has it own max. bitrate so right now if want to use 1080p120fps I had to turn of the BT OFF and restart camera. Then all bitrates modes return back to factory settings. I personally prefer quality so I will rather use only superb 4K180Mbps and 60fps1080p140Mbits instead of sometimes mediocre 120fps80Mbits. I can see macroblocking very rarely and it almost completely disappears after conversion to 16-235 (I know that some will not agree with it - loosing full luma range 0-255 just in sake of removing remaining macroblocking).

  34. I think HFR 3d is just more crap because the headsets hurt your eyes. VR is an entirely new artform. I just shot a commercial in VR using the Nokia OZO - I'm a believing in VR technology as long as it doesn't cause eye strain. It feels like the early days of film. I just wish it was only 270 degrees - having to look behind you is awkward. But all this 3d stuff - just seems like the cinema trying to compete. I saw Avatar in 3d and it blew me away, but I also saw a bunch of other films in 3d and was less than impressed. It's the same old argument - it's content that matters and finding directors who can utilize this to an advantage, vs the gimmick of it all.

  35. Better colors, v-log Better low light; noise free up to ISO 3200 or 6400 Better DR(14 stops) 10-bit 422 internal I'd be in line to buy it with these specs.

  36. Thank you :D I use mostly the Samyang 14mm f2.8 and 24mm f1.4, however, I recently sold everything and am now rocking a Sigma 18-35mm f1.8. Thanks :D I editted in premiere and then exported to AE for the transitions, I still havent found any plugin that makes this automatically, so I do it manually (scale/rotation/etc) and then I add blur to make it smooth.

  37. Yeah im not bothered with the sensor size. I do want better color, At least 10bit, a hell of a better noise performance and more DR and RAW would be nice so I can choose to have the the image a lot softer for cinematic purposes, and sharp for travel video.

  38. It's disappointing that he has taken the oversized sensor off the table completely, but if they can eliminate the few compromises/shortcomings of the GH4, along with even a modest spec increase, and emphasize the usability and reliability of the camera they could still have a market share. Not everyone can/wants to deal with mega-jello or overheating or fleeting battery life. Basically, just give us a GH4 with clean 1080/120, and 4K with no crop at >30p (even if it's only 36 or 48p). Improve low-light as much as possible, go down to 12MP if necessary, nobody complains about the a7S being 12MP. Get rolling shutter as low as you can- sub-20ms for 4K, 10-12ms or better for 1080p. You're not gonna make the GH4 big or pricey enough for CFast/XQD/SSD/etc, and UHS-II is still kinda pricey, so go to h265 so you can still use U3 SD. Or go to UHS-II and stick with h264. Either way you need to do 10-bit 4:2:2 internal, at 100-150 mbps for h265, or 200-250mbps or more for h264.

  39. This is all very subjective, but the reason I'm excited about future Kine cameras is that to me the images coming out of the Kine sensors all have a nice matte like characteristic as opposed to the glossy feel of a lot of modern cameras. Feels very organic and cinematic. I know those words get thrown around a lot, sometimes to the point of wanting to claw your eyes out sometimes, but I can't think of any other way to describe it.

All his actions do is increase the price of future products from BM because they have to add costs for the idiot factor. BM's customer service personel:- "We got another email from a customer expecting his camera to perform with a iphone torch as lighting. What should I do boss?" BM's customer service manager:- "just send him another one. Don't bother wasting Mr Petty's time. The sooner we get his unit back, the less time he can spend shooting crap 'low light tests' and uploading them to youtube"

  42. There is a great sense of tonality in this film, as you have been told already. I really enjoyed it! It feels like a good start to a bigger journey that I would happily tag along for the ride. In addition, it is a great testament to the narrative possibilities of the mk3 in the right hands. As for feedback, I was looking for an arc or a twist that pays off on the suggested relationship between the crumpled receipt (or popcorn?... it wasn't clear) and the texts. The theme is not that clear as to what the situation is, is it a thriller, love story or drama? Shorts don't necessarily need 3 acts, but there usually is a payoff that brings it all together and lets us know what is actually going on on a 'global' scale in relation to these characters you have introduced. It doesn't (I think) need more shots or details, just maybe more subtext in the text messages, more descriptive cuts and a more committed playfulness with the true (?) macguffin of the earrings. Through the earrings you are telling us everything about these people, their relationship, desires, past and future. The actor and direction (your skill) cannot really be faulted imo. Hope you meant you wanted feedback when you asked for it, thats mine!

  46. Indeed ISO in raw is done in Resolve, there is a control for ISO in the Camera DNG box in version 12 now However for ProRes shooting of course it would be useful to have an ISO button.... no... a dial, it should be on there but isn't. I miss the BMCC's cute touch screen. The Micro is pretty darn cute in itself though. Here's my rig... Kept it simple and small: Wooden Camera top handle Blackmagic View Assist via HDMI Metabones Speed Booster (BMPCC) version for 1.74 crop, almost Super 35mm Tamron 24-70mm F2.8 VC Heliopan vari-ND with hard stops Articulated hinge mounts the screen (I hate the spidery arms) - this part was a cheap generic part from eBay Base is my quick release plate!! It needed something to stand on even when not on a tripod because the camera body is so insignificant!

  47. as superb as @Brian Caldwell 's glass is, I've found that on nearly every speed booster I've used or modified the optical cell is usually not perfectly concentrically aligned in the metalwork. the small set screw that prevents the cell rotating pushes the optics off centre and also at an angle (skewed) meaning the projected image doesn't fall onto the sensor perfectly flat. so centre will be sharp and corners will be out of focus. - one side will be focused forward of the in focus middle and the other side will be focused behind the in focus middle area. my fix has been to remove the set screw all together, remove the lens cell, and then apply a heavier grease which fills the threads more effectively - this means the set screw is no longer needed since the cell wont rotate or move unless you physically adjust it by hand. if you want to see what I mean, follow metabones's instructions on how to adjust the back focus of the speed booster: http://www.metabones.com/article/of/infinity-adjustment-speed-booster-only you'll see that when you untighten/tighten the setting screw the cell will shift sideways as the screw makes contact with it. i think it's because the thread between the optical cell and the metabones adaptor metal work is a bit too loose allowing wobble/skew of the optics. The application of a heavy silicone based grease fills the thread up so the optic is perfectly centred. Only then do you obtain the best from the glass in these great adaptors Obviously without a locking screw the cell is prone to adjust through hand contact if you regularly remove and fit the adaptor, but if it remains on the camera all the time the cell won;t ever change its optimal position.

  48. Don't know if the forum has ever discussed this Feelworld viewfinder (US$229) or this Feelworld monitor (US$139). Both of these items are spec'd to handle a 1080P, 60fps/59.94fps signal through HDMI, so they might work with the BMMCC's 60P output.

  49. Strongly doubt Panasonic will go S35 for the GH5 and make obsolete overnight their entire lens collection!! That is just business madness. You could say "oh but it will still work with all the m4/3 glass in cropped mode". No, just no. This could spin into a marketing disaster for Panasonic, as it would be a very bad look for them and would send out a terrible signal about the m4/3 system and its future. MAAAAAYBE they might do S35 with an "AF200" (kinda like an ultra low end Vaircam S35), but absolutely not with a stills camera. All Panasonic needs to do is DCI 4K 60fps with 10bit internal and people will go absolute nuts over it buying the camera, and then Panasonic will easily maintain their lead over Sony for another year or more. But I won't deny, also getting as a bonus a multi aspect ratio sensor like in the GH2 would be nice. This would give it a "larger" sensor kinda, but still would work 100% with all their existing lenses. Plus of course I want full sensor read out for 4K with no additional crop. VLOOK or raw to an external recorder would also be nice too. When it comes to ergonomics, if they took a leaf out of Sony's book and had a detachable handle on the GH5 like on the FS7 so you could rig up a GH5 into a mini FS7 style camera that would be aaaamazing (however photographers would hate this! So don't see this happening). But the first two of 60fps 4K and 10bit internal are all a GH5 really needs to make a hit on their hands!
