  1. (1) and (2): Some explanations. Scripts are stored on the SD card. SD cards are optimized for sustained writes and generally slower than internal emmc flash, especially for mixed read/writes. When you start to mix script reads and video writes you are confusing the sdcard (internal) flash memory controller and since the card is optimized for large writes it will behave badly for short reads like those of scripts. Especially when these are comparatively rare in between long sustained writes. The ARM core running Tizen and the user interface is single threaded and not very fast (the fast ones are running the non-Tizen T-Kernel operating the camera hardware). You WILL see slowness because the UI has to wait for the keyscan to finish which in turn waits for the scripts to finish which in turn get read from a (comparatively) slow card the SD before it (the UI) can continue with whatever it was doing. the scripts heavily use the Linux shell, launching it every single time a script is launched (and remember for us scripts are launching other scripts - nested scripts). Bottom line, there are several things someone will need to do before you will get better performance: RUN, don't walk, from storing any script/mod/hack on SD card. This is the single greatest reason for slowness, and to make things worse, it is highly dependent on card model (and more expensive cards will not necessarily make things better because it may happen that high end cards will work less well for small reads than cheaper "non-optimized for writes" cards. Otto is doing something about this but AFAIK it is still experimental although not rocket science. But you will also have to overcome your fear of storing mods internally. After all, once you did the BT mod, you basically did 95% of what is required anyway and successfully passed the "dangerous" phase of changing camera rootfs. I do think that we need to improve that mod to enable mod bypass during boot just in case something goes wrong with any of the internal mods, and that we need to have a "mod witness" permanently on the screen to show that mods are enabled, but this is minor. Eliminate multiple scripts from "production" mods. Scripts are fantastic for getting functionality in your hands and to allow fast test turnaround and mod interface evolution but ultimately there needs to be a consolidated mod that sits in ONE binary. This is, by the way, I think, one of the reasons for the fat di-camera-app that runs the entire camera UI. Script support needs to stay (both card and internal) but over time, all mods should aspire to be part of a main mod binary. Ideally, a mod should go through multiple stages: SD card based while it is evaluated and goes through fast changes and updates and while we are NOT CERTAIN that it will not damage the camera internal when determined as safe for camera and changes are not so frequent once stable and generally accepted, optimize and integrate as binary (non-shell script) in a main executable mod for fastest speed. There you go. Also, from what I can see in the firmware, it seems that the data flow in the camera goes: Sensor => DRIME (that is operated by T-Kernel) => Tizen kernel => write on card. The reason Tizen and not T-Kernel writes on card is that you cannot have multiple operating systems write on the card at the same time. This means that if we bloat memory use on Tizen, its capacity to maintain sustained writes is lowered compared to what it might achieve with more free RAM. In turn, this means: avoid shell scripts or heavy programs (like my gdb bitrate mod version). This, IMO, is also the reason the "poker" method allows faster performance than the "gdb" method. It is also the reason I am working towards an even better method than "poker" which will consolidate the "memory change" mods in one binary without the need to stop the di-camera-app multiple times (which is very time consuming for the CPU). Finally: Would anyone mind starting something like a gofundme campaign for a NX500. Mine needs a replacement power button (I kind of abused mine I guess) and I am reluctant to keep working on it after I get it repaired. It is too bad because with time, based on what I see in the camera, and if there was a developer community built around it, the hardware could achieve wonders. And to be clear, Otto, Kino Seed, Chant, and me do not "community" make IMO, like for example Magic Lantern. If you guys want anything close to ML you will need to do a lot more about spreading the word and competing for developers time/recruiting new ones. Regards Vasile

  3. Hey guys - I haven't been here for a while so I'm not sure if the new Sigma APSC Art zoom has been discussed much yet, but I just got one yesterday and thought I'd share my first impressions. I haven't done any technical tests but I'll start by saying my first impressions are it's a superb piece of glass with the superb sharpness (even wide open), character and build quality that you've come to expect from the Art line. However there are a few things those of you interested in adding it to your kit might like to be aware of - especially if you're thinking of it as a companion to the now classic 18-35mm 1.8. 1. It's HEAVY, and pretty big. The 18-35mm feels like a modest MFT lens next to it! It's not exceptionally long but it's got a lot more heft to it and is quite front heavy, meaning it's probably a bit unweildy on a hybrid camera. On my C100 Mark II it's OK to hand hold, but only just. 2. Focus breathing is EXTREME. Personally this isn't a big problem for me but it does impose a certain style on your focus pulls, so if you don't like that look take note. It's going to take a bit of getting used to for me. 3. While the 18-35mm has minimal focus breathing it is not parfocal, which can be annoying at times. The 50-100mm however appears to be parfocal (or at least very close to it). I don't know if trading breathing for focus consistency was an intentional choice by Sigma, but it is another difference to the wider zoom. 4. I read somewhere that it was effectively as quiet when autofocusing as an STM lens. This is not the case at all - not with my copy anyway. It's at least as noisy as the 18-35. Of course this is only really an issue if you're using it on a Canon DAF camera or a6300. The 18-35mm has been my go-to lens on my BMPCC and GH4 (with their respective speedboosters) for a while now. The relatively compact size of the lens was a big part of this. Now I use a C100 size is not such an issue, but if you're hoping the 50-100 will make a great partner for the 18-35 on a smaller camera as a full walk-around "prime" kit, you may be disappointed. It's so heavy in fact that Sigma's included lens case comes with a shoulder strap! Even on the C100 I'm going to be using it on a tripod most of the time, as the longer, front-heavy focal length makes footage pretty shaky. Of course the flipside of this is that the extra weight helps with reducing micro jitters and with a bit of practice focusing and holding it, it may be useable handheld. I'm happily holding on to the lens because the image quality is superb, it's made really nicely and the convenience of having prime image quality (minus the breathing) in two modestly sized zooms is invaluable for my work. In most cases I'll be using the 50-100mm as a portrait lens for interviews, so in general it will be on sticks and this negates the weight issue. It's by no means so huge and heavy I don't want to put it in my kit bag. If you want to keep your kit small and think you'll get by with one or two fixed focal length lenses and value compactness and ease of handling, I'd weigh up the pro's of sticking to primes before shelling out $1000 for the 50-100mm.

  6. He he, I don't think it's a bug, it's a feature :-) Otto could not check whether the LCD is on or off in his programs without access to a NX1 to find out how - NX500 has no VF - :-) so he did his best under the circumstances... Just make sure you do any stuff which pops messages on the screen, while the screen is on and not while using the viewfinder.

  7. (imo) All I know is that the 4K raw from the BMPC looked great when I shot it. But so does the show "Curb Your Enthusiasm" from when they where still 4:3 SD, the colors and detail is smashing. Just recently rewatched Seinfeld, the 35mm in SD looks amazing. I just binge watched a new favorite photo channel on youtube, shot on the EOS-M with a 22mm, it looked great. Not once did I feel the image lacking. Point? Resolution is not that important. 1080p HD is still overkill for 99% everything being made. What really matters is (leaving out content here), DR, colors, composition, mood, movement, etc. And with DR its not so much having as many stops as possible, but more what you do with them. You can always light, choose the time of day, bounce, crush, etc so the image falls within the DR you have. Working with the limitations.

  8. Please canon don't give us 4k, it will overheat and the rolling shutter issues will ruin your reputation. Instead give us 10 bit 422 at 2.5k with a good sensor readout (3ms), in different codec flavours with different storages rates. It would be nice to have the possibility to record to hevc 10 bit 422 and also pro res 10 bit 422 HQ. The rest you already do right.

  11. Just add C-Log to the 1DX Mkii and call it a day. As for a smaller body, not gonna happen. They need room for heat-pipes, and that cannot fit in the smaller body. And given what you need it for, I take it you'll want that weather sealed also. Btw, who else is packaging these specs into a weather sealed body? Sony A7 series, FS5/7 are not weather sealed.

  14. I have recently been shooting a lot of 1080p 60fps on the NX1 and love the extra slow motion room you get from those 60fps when editing in 24fps timeline. I just wished there was a bit more DR and/or more room for colour grading before the image falls apart. So it got me wondering what other cameras have a really good 1080p 60fps mode. What is your go-to camera for some crisp 1080p 60fps goodness? Edit: here is a 1080p/60fps slo-mo edit:

  15. Yeah, exactly! thanks, man! I think we all win here with bitrate hack, it's obvious for me, Results may vary (he-he, LB here) but overall anyone can find exact right way to treate bitrate as he (or she) wants and needs. Of course it is not about exact numers at all, many of scenes works fine even in 100-120 mbps, bot for me there is always bugging me idea - how it really works and how exactly it impoves quality of my work, despite the opinion of others and even myself, you know, like blind test, but not "blind" exactly ))

  17. Getting great results with this hack so far, but I have found an error. If you use the viewfinder instead of rear screen while the hack loads the whole camera freezes, only fix is a battery pull.

  19. The photos look good, no question about it. But they would have looked much better IMO from a Canikon. Specially in the DR department. If we take the context of military photos there is a reason why most CC teams still use DSLRs. Even though saving space is a key.

  21. My take on a travel camera is one that you don't have to baby or worry about, it just does its job and gets out of the way. GH4 fits the perfectly. I have left it out overnight in the rain with the 12-35 doing a timelapse and it was fine. And this was a slightly abused, used camera before I bought it. Video quality is great, you get 1.5hrs on a 64gb card (and not u3 cards, cheap u1 cards work fine). Battery will last probably three times that of continuous recording. Plus a usable slow mo! As for photo quality being a con, I totally disagree. I think we are at a point where you can use virtually any camera for photos and it will do a good job. GH4 especially with Pana lenses has decent tracking AF and perfect single AF. Raws are versatile, there are lots of small lenses too. It's what I would take if I could only have one body.

  22. 1m is a long min focus... I'd be tempoted to go with a 100mm macro and a 50mm 1.4 instead! Quite a vintage milky look there in the bokeh too, not totally smooth but not crazy vintage jitters. a strange one by the looks of it... not quite the essential lens-bag winner that is the 18-35 1.8, but still unique. But hey, I've not used it

  24. two words: app store its been brought up before, years ago by @EOSHD_Twitter himself, and others, time and again > why have literally zero manufacturers capitalized on this. dont they like money? the "app store" is keeping apple alive right now. u kno whats great about my 13" ipad pro? app store. nothing else. apples software implementation of their pencil stylus is hot garbage – but an app like procreate changes everything – and it shows what the future of photoshop could be with a touch interface. its great but you dont have to download apps on your ipad!!! and 98% of people who buy an ipad download few if any apps, beyond social media/etc, that actually expand the depth of functionality of their device. perfect analogy! if there was a 1dxii app store id be downright sympathetic about that $6k pricetag smh. instead, please forgive me for being very critical of that image vs 5diii raw

  25. As similiar as they look like, I found them pretty different. If you need shallow(er) DoF, then skip the RX100 and go for the LX100. If you however need better slowmo and an even more smaller package, take the RX100. Codec-wise, I found them pretty similiar for the 4K option, 1080p is better on the RX100.

  28. Well, here is the answer. Make a Timemachine backup of your current system (any external drive will do), and you are back there within half an hour if necessary. Drag & drop works. Of course every new OS has some bugs. I always read bug reports before I update. But I update eventually. I have an office iMac with Mountain Lion, and though it's working fine it feels slow and antiquated in comparison. Staying with an old OS is not the Apple way ;-) Since Yosemite, the most dramatic change is the appearance. The system font changed from Lucida to Helvetica, which is harder to read on low res displays but easier on retina displays. El Capitan supports "metal" for most Macs built after 2012. Apples statement that it would make graphics up to ten times faster has been challenged, but an average boost of round about 30% has been reported, depending on system and software. My 2009 MP with GTX680 feels faster, but I didn't measure anything, may well be a placebo. The most annoying bug, NO BLUETOOTH, has allegedly been fixed with 10.11.2. Don't know, use no BT. I didn't find this bug description, but my WiFi and Lan-Connection failed reliably after a while since El Capitan. I tested different things and identified the cause: Adobe Flash. I deinstalled this. Only little AV content will not be played back through HTML5 (Firefox announced "Shumway", a plugin that will play the dubious rest too), and Flash is risky anyway. Do not install it, even (and particularly) if you are prompted to.

  29. After working with Panasonic footage for years (gh1, gx7), every time I see Canon footage these days it just seems thicker, richer, more solid somehow. It is the only way I can think of to describe what I'm seeing! It just seems to have more "weight" .. is it just because the colours are so right/pleasing?? I know it sounds crazy, but that is what I see, and how my brain interprets/labels it. I'm glad I'm not the only one! It shines though fine on the web too.. I did own a Canon 50d for a while, and I do like the gh1 colour better than the gx7..

  32. Plenty of useful info here too... http://www.sagindie.org There's a little misinformation in this thread, like being able to defer payment under the Ultra Low Budget Agreement. that contract requires a minimum of $125/day plus $17.3% for pension and health and you must hire a payroll service. It's the New Media agreement that allows you to negotiate payment as low as $0.

  33. Ok, here are my findings from dodays shoot. It slows down the camera. A lot. Like a lot lot! But most of us already know that right? a) When the SD is clean + you have a lot of light + temperature is ok (around 22 degrees *C on the sun), it works beautifully for me at 190mbps with pretty budget card. b) When the SD is filling up (30% and more filled up) + you are loosing good light (golden hour is dimminishing and you are pushing Iso from 100 to 200, 400,800,1250,2000..) + temperature drops (7-8 *C), it stops frequently. What worked with conditions a) is not working with b) anymore. The camera is getting slower (my opinion, nothing scientific), the card is stopping- this one is for sure and I had to drop it down from 190 to 165.. I wonder what is causing it? Also: Loading of script is slow. Really slow. When you run and gun, everything needs to be smooth, fast. And its not. There was a moment when the camera frozed, so I took out the battery, placed it in and got like purple error screen (Looked like when you drop your phone on the ground and the screen breaks, looked really bad). So I rebooted again and the script. Just takes a long time and when you are shooting in high cadency motion situations, those moments to load the script just feels like forever. And you are loosing a lot of time. Didnt had the time to check the files, not sure if recording before the script is loaded causes to record with previously modified bitrate or just standard Pro 80mbps. Other then that: cadency is fixed,CTUs are better, more einformation is there. The question is - what caused the card to be so unstable in my todays recordings? - Is there a way to make the script not slow down the camera so much?

  34. It's possible that since it's new, everyone is trying to show off the DR and the super polished/clean look. I don't think it would be hard at all to make it cinematic. There's a lot of things that make a shot cinematic such as lighting but you could crush the hell out of the contrast and add some grain. Desaturate a little bit. Use a Tiffen Digital Diffusion filter. I may try to rough it up a bit for a test soon.

  36. Yup, Ive thought about that before as well. A lot of people get excited by the "new Sonys with even more specs", but they sometimes seem to miss the fact that the price went up as well. So the "bang for buck" argument actually gets weaker with every new model. Same thing in the RX100 line. They haven't "added more", just raised the price accordingly. Imo Panasonic is the mirrorless company that keeps cost down by releasing the G-model of their GH-cameras.

  39. Just caught up with this thread, are most people formatting with the windows/other os format program? Ive been using https://www.sdcard.org/downloads/formatter_4/ For the longest time it has worked way better than anything windows does, as my first test with a sandisk extreme pro 32GBs uhs-1 gave me 200mbs right off the bat. Try this and reformat the cards and see if you gain speed. Might work for the uhs-2 card that seem slower than they should. Still sorting through firmware and dumping data from the camera. My day job has gotten busy so I have not had the time to post here but I have not slowed down my work. But whats happened is amazing, seems like more people are finding these mods, maybe samsung will notice.

  40. I can confirm Outerbeats findings. I was lurking in the shadows until something bigger happens, but my video assignment for today made me to step forward and try to install the hack. To my findings it was super easy and the hack works perfectly with my budget card Transcend Ultimate 600x 64GB SDXC 90MB/s Class 10 (which offeres best price/performance for the lowest price). The card heats up, but as others said already, until its hot to melting point (which won't happen), no problem at all. With that NX1 can do - 200mbit for 6 sec - 195mbit for aprox. 6,5 minut - 190mbit no stopping after 12 minutes.. Not sure what changed, but great job guys, very much so!

There you can insert all numbers for each quality option, also you can push "current" and change current bitrate which camera operates right now, e.g. your last settings

  42. Guys, 200 mbps confirmed! SANDISK Extreme Pro SDXC 64GB Class 10 UHS-I U1 95/90 MB/s I did the test for new version of Kino Seed's mod-pack for nx500 and NX1, and can confirm all this functionality: Record limit on/off (resets after every reboot) Setting up bitrate for current mode Setting up bitrate for any video mode in menu Hibernate and Sleep mode Custom functions - focus and batch Saving and loading profiles Saving and loading full backup settings Also - functional key-combinations, like EV+MOBILE for telnet, it's just perfect actually All of this you can run and setup without rebooting the camera. We did debug for NX1 and all functions are OK and safe to go. While I've tested bitrate hack in this MOD, I find out that now my NX1 and Sandisk now can operate with 210 mbps with little lags, so I set up 200 mbps and it goes smooth and easy. Happy to announce that NX1 now can do 200 mbps video record. Now I'm ready to do some test shooting. Here is the mod-pack Thanks to Vasile, Otto K and Kino Seed

hahaha. p.s. I love Canon, I just wish they would make a mirrorless camera like Sony (but Canon) and do it at a price that I can actually afford :D . 45. The big issue would be the card melting into a sticky liquid inside the camera and... Kidding aside, I was at a bar one night and a client returned a SanDisk Extreme SD card (20mbs) I'd forgotten about. Stuck it in my jeans pocket (in the little plastic case - which isn't watertight or dustproof). Then we had drink after drink. Anyway, a few days later, I noticed an SD card sitting in the laundry room. My wife said, "Oh, that thing was in your pocket". It had gone through wash, rinse, and spin, and then into the dryer for an hour. On "cotton" or whatever. I took it to my desk, out of curiosity I wanted to test it before I threw it out. But… I got busy, and it got mixed into my other cards. I still shoot with it to this day, a year or more later (not fast enough for my current 4K, but it goes in the big Panasonic and my Nikons). I have no idea which card it is. Works fine though.

  46. As a viewer, how else are we to make judgements? I don't own the camera, probably will never use one, so I base my judgements on the images I see on my screen. I don't know, maybe you're right... maybe the web compression makes every image I have seen from this camera blow away anything comparable. But that's just my opinion... Lol you guys talk about thickness of the image like wine conocers talk about their drink. Please stop. You cant possibly make judgements lile this from a compressed web video. You need the raw footage in your hands and know about how it was lit, shot etc. Most people who use cameras like the gh4 arent setting up huge diffusers to soften 1k watt lights or even the sun. Thats really where the difference lays when you see footage from a 10k camera and from a 1k camera

  48. give the crew a $60k budget to shoot, and a $20k budget to pay for the edit/post for a promo video for the nex5n and the results would be just as awe inspiring. The level of production value on this video makes it impossible to judge the camera because in real instances with these budgets they'd just add another $2k for the rental of an Alexa Mini for the couple of days of shooting. $80k for 8bit acquisition and a lens mount incapable of using real cinema lenses, or $82k for arriraw acquisition and the ability to use cooke s4's.. Nothing more annoying than consumer advertising techniques selling a dream to people that they'll be using a dslr to shoot these types of projects.
