Quesrion. A7sII or A7rII
Marco Tecno and 3 others reacted to Simon Shasha for a topic
Go the A7RII. I owned it, and though not owning the current A7SII, I owned the A7S - the BSI sensor in the A7RII produces an image that I believe is much superior to the original A7S, and everything I have seen from the A7SII. I find the colours of the A7RII are much more accurate, shadows much cleaner. You really don't need more than 12,800ISO (if not 6400ISO), which the A7RII does fine. Personally, I scrap a location if it needs more than 6400ISO (back in the day I'd scrap it if needed more than 1600ISO) - when ISO gets ridiculous, good chance one shouldn't even be shooting there in the first place.4 points -

Got some used stuff today. The two Voigtlanders are in absolute mint condition but very cheap. The camera was in good condition with the desirable brass patina. The lenses had two years warranty and the camera one + the regular Leica warranty for fabrication errors. I wanted the camera since I love editing Raw on my phone and I enjoy range finders. A happy accident is that Leica M adapts to Panasony and Fuji. And they of course cover the full s35 of my LS300. The build quality of the lenses are just like they usually are with Voigtlander, Excellent! Smooth, all metal and solid. Here are a few quick shots from my garden on the M8. They have had their contrast quickly corrected and one or two got some saturation and a vignette. So no grading. Also, I corrected the raw on my phone under harsh sunlight, drinking beer, so no master pieces 50mm 28mm3 points -

Hi guys, I have been using the A7R II and the RX100 IV for travel in Cuba, check my video if you want to see the result. So far I loved the RX100 for the slowmo (I filmed everything in 120fps with it) and the A7R II was good too. The IBIS is not great but better than nothing especially when you dont have an IS lens. No overheating problem (this is mostly a problem for people who record long times). The biggest problem that made me sell it is ergonomics (body and menus, ..). It is atrocious. Also I am very disappointed with the AF. Actually my 2 biggest challenges during my trip for video were focus and ergonomics shits of the A7R. Having to set everything all the time was a pain, and the AF was not satisfying. I had no time for manual focus for the type of shots I did so missed a lot of shots because of this. I did focus manually 25% of the time though but it was a pain too. The only solution for me is DPAF from Canon or A6300 AF (I did not try it). Rolling shutter is insane on the A7R. I used the 60p FHD mode sometimes and also the FF mode instead of crop mode sometimes without noticing a big difference. I used a Pilotfly H1+ that was ok. Used it only for the RX100. The good thing is the combo RX100/gimbal 120fps and the A7R II for DoF shots and 4k. Who has used this combo successfully? What do you think about the video? I feel horrible about how Vimeo destroyed it, the original file is SO clean on my screen... But I guess we are all in the same basket here.2 points

The DPreview tests back up everything Andrew has said here... Journalism is all about presenting information in a concise package. DPReview's article is plagued with positivity - if they're not positive they don't get advertising revenue or free cameras sent early. Andrews article simply points out and opens conversation regarding the less positive facts that are almost avoided by dpreview to best play political ball - brushing under the carpet hastily the fact that the 1dxii doesn't improve upon - infact based on the tests can;t even compete technically against a 4year old predecessor. I like the article because it's brought to light that from a stills point of view my investment in an A7Rii was a good one and from what I'm seeing here canon won't offer anything that will compete for at least a few years.2 points

That is a good but fairly expensive package. If you have no experience flying a drone I strongly suggest you get a DJI Phantom 3 Standard or 4K to practice with. those are $500-$650. Don't practice from a dead start with the X5R. My documentary team has an FAA licenced rotorcraft pilot to fly our fleet of three Phantom 3 Pros, although we may upgrade to the Inspire/X5R. It is not legally required but he's a helicopter pilot and has lots of drone experience. He is constantly reading, studying and practicing to optimize our chances when we get on site. He has a large tacklebox of repair parts and tools. Despite that experience, he has crashed several drones on various shooting sites. Most of those were not disastrous but several of them could have been.1 point

Canon 1D X Mark II high ISO and colour performance worse than predecessor
Pavel Mašek reacted to OliKMIA for a topic
DP Review is own by Amazon and they surely have a certain policy with the manufacturers. Yes they have the "think positive" attitude but they are honest and it's easy to read between the lines or see the sample by yourself. I can't say the same for a vast majority of blogs and other websites that puke advertorials all over the place to maintain their "preferred relation" by distributing constant 3 to 5 stars ratings. What I expect from a review is to show me all the bad and the ugly, not to sugar coat the reality. And I deeply thank you Andrew for doing that with Canon and all the other, Sony included. I myself do a little bit of review and testing in a different industry and it's very hard to resist the ambient corruption. It takes courage and that's not easy. The comfortable position is to get invited, paid and promoted by all the "partners" and this is what most reviewers and "journalists" do because they have to pay the bills at the end of the month and being the white knight quickly close all the doors and turn you into a black sheep in terms of PR. Canon 1D X Mark II high ISO and colour performance worse than predecessor
IronFilm reacted to Andrew Reid for a topic
Thank you. Indeed we must be realistic. DPReview always put an overtly positive 'spin' on things. It's the job of an independent blogger to add balance to any given set of facts. The facts: - No low light improvement over the 2012 model - Colour is more muted - Less detail in JPEGs at high ISOs - 4 years since the predecessor Dynamic range still behind Sony and most Nikon sensors. DPReview wrote this: "Like the EOS 80D there's a big improvement in the camera's dynamic range. Canon's move to a design using on-chip analog-to-digital conversion allows less noise to be added before the signal is converted into digital values" Which in my opinion is highly questionable. The way DPR tested the dynamic range relies on the sensor being ISO invariant - i.e., maximum dynamic range at base ISO, exposure achieved by underexposing by as much as 5 stops to protect the shadows. This technique completely changes the distribution of your histogram and kills tonality / skintones / colour, all 3. If you wanna shoot like that be my guest but it's not a viable technique if you want to maximise image quality. Canon didn't move to on-chip A/D conversion with the 1D X Mark II. The original 1D X has on chip A/D, so that's flat out wrong. "Big improvement" to dynamic range. By any measure it's not "big". So you can drink their cool aid and be happy, or you can be properly informed and less happy. Your choice. I know which option Jimmy would choose!1 point -
Of course it will. So does the 1Dx. The problem is not about being a bad camera, it's a about the micro leap in terms of improvements over the previous generation. 4 years for what ? A slightly bump in pixel, catching up in DR, same ISO, a few more FPS, better AF. It's not worth $6k for me.1 point

At least the dynamic range of the newest Canon flagship Camera is now up to the standard of the last year medium level competitor bodies. Ok great... Took 4 years for Canon to get there without anything else on the IQ side ? And we are talking about a $6k camera. In 1 or 2 years the Sony or Nikon entry level FF or even Crop will blow the 1DX that supposed to last until 2020. Of course I know that IQ is one of the features, along with AF, FPS, etc. but it's too little, to late and too expensive for me. I can't justify the spend $6k for a marginal improvement over a 4 years period. With that money I could: 1. buy the new A7R3 with the 24-70 2.8 G-Master. 2. buy the previous Canon generation camera, save a lot of money, loose a few feartures but have the same IQ1 point

You are so negative Andrew ! We should be happy with the 2012 camera price drop. On the bright side, the 6D/5Dmk3/1DC/X are becoming cheaper and cheaper after each Canon "new" release. Since Canon gets stuck on sensor/processing performance why paying 2016 premium price when we can get the same IQ with heavily discounted 2012 camera ? Thanks. I did a lot of movements in shot directly, but then for each shot I use speed ramps on FCPX. But the movements are real, from the camera, except for one or 2 zooming effects. It's all about playing with speed ramps at the right time during the right movement. No twixtor since I used 120fps and 60fps for slowmo I took 600 clips during the 2 weeks.1 point

Personally, I don't think it really makes much difference these days. Not sure I'd want to try and run Avid on an underpowered Macbook, but Premiere or FCPX will be fine with it. Granted, Premiere plays nicer with Nvidia/CUDA cards, and Apple only allow OpenCL AMD cards in their new Mac Pro (which FCPX is tuned for), but there's no reason why you couldn't/shouldn't run Premiere, or any NLE on a Mac. There are plenty of things that FCPX still can't do - like export an OMF, for example. There are things it is good at, but there are certain projects where I would avoid FCPX if I could. If it's the only thing you have - you've gotta work with it. The 'magnetic' or 'lack-of' timeline is both great and awful, depending on what you're doing and how you like to edit. Things that are quick in other NLEs can end up being much more difficult in FCPX. And vice versa. Simple things like fine adjustments to cross fades, or lengthening a clip that has a crossfade on it become more tedious and annoying.1 point

Mac OSX/ Editing Software - Poll
Zak Forsman reacted to Axel for a topic
FCP X on El Capitan. I must apologize in advance, because my postings often sound too enthusiastic when it comes to my NLE. I feel like I have to defend it when others complain that it's frustrating because of the magnetic timeline paradigm. I have been editing (mainly weddings) since 2002, and I know FCP up to FCS2 and Premiere up to CS5.5. Why FCP X? The simple answer: because I'm on a Mac. Imo it makes no sense to install Premiere on a Mac because it doesn't take full advantage of the OS and (with modern Macs) hardware. You could edit 4k video with a tiny MB with 1,1 GHz, 8 GB RAM and no dedicated graphic card using FCP X. Premiere now starts with proxy workflows as well (as I described here), and I think that's a good idea. When in FCP classic you had to always log (& capture/ & transfer), which meant you knew your footage in greater detail before you actually could start editing in the timeline. Whereas with FCP X you could start editing after import, it's not a wise thing to do. And many of those who are used to other NLEs and 'give FCP X a go' aren't wise, because they tend to skip this part. For instance, when I review freshly imported clips in the browser, I already synchronize external audio, uncheck the camera audio and mark all usable portions of clips with "f"(avorite). I then set up a smart collection with the following rules: Show synchronized clips, favorites and unused clips. Then I work from this smart collection. I don't see anything I don't want or need, and as I proceed my browser gets emptied because all used clips simply disappear. This of course is just the tip of the iceberg, not using custom tags and roles. Organizing many clips (like typically from a wedding) is a time-consuming nightmare in Premiere, and I can understand why people do that in the timeline instead of renaming, tagging or sorting things into folders. However, if I was to abandon Apple, I would go Adobe on Windows. Simply because I know it. I never touched Avid, so I can't tell. I assume it's good. We have that in common. I have always preferred JKL (even over the funky 'skimmer'), and I always learn and customize all shortcuts. Why? Because it's way faster than shoving the mouse. I type blind and just watch the image.1 point -

New Canon 1DX Mkii Footage
Zach Ashcraft reacted to DBounce for a topic
Don't know, but apparently the 1DC did not sell as much as Canon had hoped... Maybe because it was basically the same camera as the 1DX MkI but with a few more video features and a few less still camera feature and a huge price markup? In any case, the 1DX Mkii is the best of both worlds. And I for one do like both still and video features in my cameras, and the 1DX Mkii, while not perfect, does seem to check quite a few important boxes.1 point -
You have CS6 and I think Mercury Playback was only introduced on CS5. It probably got a lot more use via nVidia/CUDA than OpenCL/AMD, so maybe that accounts for the reliability issues you saw. Re ProRes, this helps performance due to eliminating the need for H264 decoding. Long-GOP encode/decode like H264 cannot be greatly accelerated by normal GPU methods so using Mercury hardware playback doesn't help that per se. However Mercury hardware playback makes a huge difference on effects. Since virtually all editing requires effects the net result is GPU acceleration makes a big improvement even though it doesn't accelerate encode/decode by itself. ClipWrap can either rewrap AVCHD which does not transcode but is faster to convert, or it can transcode which is slower to convert but will run faster on the editor. In your situation I would suggest transcoding. The tradeoff is ProRes takes about 8x the space of AVCHD and also requires more I/O for that lower-density data. However it greatly lowers the CPU consumption of editing and improves responsiveness. In general I would suggest moving from CS6 to some other editor, whether that is Premiere CC, FCPX, or Resolve. CS6 is really old, is not being maintained, and you will get better performance, reliability and features on any of those other editors.1 point

Start small... These things are tricky beasts and 1 lapse of concentration can see you in trouble.... The DJI stuff is clever, but you still need to take alot of care and attention. Get a 2nd hand phantom or something and really learn the thing, then see if you feel comfortable with a bigger rig. I know from experience moving too quickly onto a more powerful copter and getting in what is known as the toilet bowl... 1 droidworx drone and a bmpcc smashed to pieces on only our 3rd flight! Once you feel comfortable though... The inspire is a nice copter... Really nice... Not sure I would want an X5R on 4 blade copter though... With 6 blades,.you have a far better chance of landing if one goes wrong.1 point -
Drones. Which one?
Jonesy Jones reacted to joema for a topic
The 4K aspect is a good idea. While the importance of 4K is often over-stated, for aerial footage it makes a big difference. This might be due to the detailed nature of foliage and the wide-angle nature of the shots. Or maybe the lower-end 1080p drones just weren't delivering nearly that, making "4K" look disproportionately better (even when downscaled to 1080p). Even flying a lower-end drone like a DJI Phantom safely and effectively (from a cinematographic standpoint) requires a considerable amount of skill. All the time you take studying that, practicing, maintaining it, etc, is subtracted from your other pre-production time. For intermittent or infrequent needs I would tend to suggest just hiring one. If you want to develop a more self-sufficient capability, be prepared for the investment in study and time. Without considerable experience it is easy to crash an expensive drone. Also inquire locally about what your regulatory, registration and enforcement situation is. There are a lot of issues about "geofencing", temporary flight restrictions (TFRs), etc.1 point -

Unless you're flying an Alexa Mini and need that last bit of highlight detail (like in the Revenant or something) I think you'd be foolish not to go with the X5R. The smaller platform is more stable. Lots of price/performance there, too–I expect the image to be competitive with anything up to and included the Dragon–but with less flexibility in terms of lens changes. But if you need to buy a new A camera, too, and are already getting a Ronin MX for it, then maybe it becomes less obvious a choice. Also, the Osmo and Z axis would be amazing.1 point -

I think you've done a great job, but...I preferred the little sections in the middle where you weren't really trying to emulate the style of other videos like this. The wooshes and swoops kind of take me out of the action a little bit and I'm left thinking, does this fastly cut interwoven style work for your subject, Cuba? I don't know, I've never been, but the feeling I got from your actual shots was a more laid back lifestyle, people seemed to be taking their time, life looks more sanguine - could you capture that? Otherwise on an aesthetic level the colours are amazing and your movement is lovely. Well I made my decision and can't say I'm unhappy. Made a little noise torture test with Scarlet X, latest firmware, sensor newly calibrated. For those unfamiliar, ISO is set in post with raw, while the exposure meter gives a preview of what your post settings will achive, as well as bars for total noise and clipping so you can see how much lights you're getting into the thing. This is at effective ISO 25600 (12800 is max selection in Premiere, with 1-stop of FLUT push), shot at 10:1 compression (!) Here you see the noise unprocessed, then with Neat Video, then unprocessed again. watch it in 4K a couple of times to get a good idea. The image is far far brighter than real life, it's a little shadowy corner with a tiny amount of natural light. The joy of raw! As I test more I'm working out how best to use ISO to set where your dynamic range lives. In future I'd do all shots intended for high ISO at lowest compression just to get every bit of detail i can. I love that when it pans over to the leaflet you can read it all so clearly. Magic! I knew it would be good but this is just... silly. Don't worry though, I still love my Canons The camera is extremly heavy with an Anton Bauer battery on the back, and with a Redvolt the battery life is abysmal, plus the footage is big and the media are nauseatingly expensive, so it'll never be as convenient as a C100. But god damn, tis pretty. Can't argue with 16-bit colour even when you're attempting to destroy it... Neat Video 4.1 is a great update. It makes full use of powerful GPUs and has brilliant temporal settings that assist with low-frequency noise across time. Great stuff!1 point

Red One MX - Why I bought one
TheRenaissanceMan reacted to Ed_David for a topic
I second with Mattias decision for a red one mx . I own two of them, and three sony f35 - about to put up a test - f35 vs f3 vs red one mx vs a7s ii The Red One MX, Ebrahim, has a pretty good sensor. I also think of it as 12 stops. But has really good resolution. It also has the best looking skintone out of the bat in daylight than, in my eyes, the Red Dragon sensor. I think Shane Hurlbut did a comparison of how each optical low-pass filter affects skintones. I haven't done tests to see, but I notice that the motion on the red one mx feels better than the Epic MX - also David Fincher agrees with me and Mattias, he said he prefers the look of the Red One MX over the Epic - on his interview for AC about girl with the dragon tattoo. I used the BM4k and wasn't a fan of its highlight roll off - the CION doesn't look that appealing to me. The Red ONE MX is a workhorse. Mine has been going for over 2 years now after going thru some long, intense shoots. In -20 F weather in north Alaska. Also it has less fan noise issues than the Red Epic. It's compression is pretty good - it's clean and sharp and has nice motion. Red Customer support is HORRIBLE! If you break anything, even a SSD reader, they won't do anything but charge you. And reduser - a lot of them including the President are really mean to people on their boards. So they are a mixed bag. I still want to do a red one mx vs alexa mini vs fs7 vs f55 vs ursa 4.6k test vs c300 ii test if I ever have time or money - maybe someone else can do it.1 point
