Honestly - I never thought the NX1 hack would get this far! I can remember long ago, when we were all but children playing in the garden, back when Kidzrevil first posted this challenge.... At the rate some of the folks here are carving deeper into the guts, I wouldn't be all that surprised if one day someone DID find a way to get a RAW video feed out of these kittens of ours. In the meantime it sure seems to be a resounding success even just in it's first couple of months, with the increased bit-rates cleaning up some of the problem areas in just the way I expected it would. Kudos to all involved. Now if only Otto or someone else could write a sub-script that would prevent me from pointing my NX1 at bad subject material...7 points

BlackMagic Micro Cinema Update?
Ed Andrews and 5 others reacted to mercer for a topic
So, I had my first full day with the micro and... Wow it really is a fun camera. It is a little cumbersome using a small rig and the buttons are hard to push but the image is just amazing. It seems like you can underexpose, overexpose or nail the exposure and you have a lot to work with in post. And the colors... Nice. Obviously not the most amazing images in the world, but for a first time out with it... I am pleased.6 points -

Yeah it's too easy to get locked into that "grass is greener" game… although I have to say I shoot an A7sII at work most days and for me it's not all it's cracked up to be, ergonomics are horrible, everyone knows about the menus, battery life way worse than nx, bloody awful screen… it just feels soulless. For me the nx1 is basically the perfect camera ergonomically. So comfortable to hold and easy to shoot with. The only thing the sony's really have going is the low light and of course it's a little bit easier to achieve shallow dof, but to be honest with fast glass I pretty much never have to go above 1600, ever. Who actually NEEDS 25,000+?! And why are they only filming in pitch black caves?! I do love (and frequently use) the NX1 for stills as well, but lately I've been batting around the idea of picking up a full frame just to utilize all my FF lenses the way they're meant to be used… which means mirrorless over dslr, to adapt all that glass, so I've looked at used A7r prices, but then it sucks to buy a camera that sucks for video, just in case, so then… gah… round and round it goes.4 points

Where can I get a New NX1?

I'm not so much for ff cameras. I mean, ok, they are cool, but I still prefer a high end apsc to a mid-end ff. Of course 1dx mk2 is incredible, but imo nx1 is better than most ff under 3000$.4 points -

I think it is ironic that these jokes about the Nazis and MF are actually true. The famous Arriflex 35 that became a standard film industry camera after WWII originated in Nazi Germany. It was the first 35mm motion picture camera to allow for reflex focusing. So, yes, when it comes to motion picture cameras, the Nazis perfected manual focusing. Still, I prefer the precise control of MF for hand-held documentaries, even if it makes me a bit of a camera "Nazi." Here is an example of the 1DC in a documentary setting that shows the value of manual focusing for stylistic effect:2 points

Yeah this pulling the bitrate from the hack to support the newest firmware is not good, splitting an already small community up in to two groups2 points

5D mk4 Spec

It seems 4K is guaranteed by the trusted sources. Lack of Clog is pretty much guaranteed too, but other nice profiles will be available. TBH I've shot c-log in anger once in the years I've had C100s and that was with external recorder, as long as there's as something like VisionColor it'll have nice options. The biggest issue is the lack of usability software, like peaking and zebras and so on. If it doesn't have these basics, it'll be a pretty poor choice for many video situations. Buying it because you hope Magic Lantern will hack it is not good for anyone. It tells Canon it's fine to not bother adding essential features and it leaves the purchaser with a half functioning camera and fingers crossed. Canon apologists are becoming a bit like Apple fanboys, who throw themselves on the altar everytime they're given a kick in the nuts and tell everyone how "it's actually a good thing it has no ports and has half the power of a PC and cost me twice as much". I can hear it now "I actually like not having peakeing, I can work hard to focus, I don't need proper video controls, this frees my creativity to think about the image". You're not fooling anyone, theoretical strawman fanboy I just invented. Buying a camera is not the time to turn the other, already rather sore, cheek.2 points -

Yesterday by mistake I pushed the record button on my camera while having a drink on a terrace in Tokyo (28c here). The camera was on the table and 30 minutes later when I took the camera I was wandering why it was "hot"... have been recording for a good half hour by mistake!! So to answer your question, it can do FOR sure record 30 minutes without any problems and this despite being under Tokyo's sun!2 points

The camera which Panasonic can't decide what to call (GX80 in Europe, GX85 in the US and GX7 Mark II in Japan!) really excites me. It's the first time that anyone has put 5 axis in-body stabilisation in a 4K camera which exceeds the performance of the stunningly good Olympus 5 axis system. It's not quite as effective as a gimbal for sweeping handheld movement, but that pain-in-the-ass tripod you can certainly dispense with now, along with that Olympus 1080p mush too!! GRAB A CUP OF TEA, PUT DOWN YOUR F***ING IPHONE AND READ THE LONG ARTICLE!!1 point

I don't exactly understand why anyone would even want to use a hack that doesn't increase the bit rate and image quality.1 point

On a side note...if you are shooting handheld or you know you will want to re-time in post, it is a good idea to dial up your shutter speed to reduce or eliminate motion blur as much as possible. That way, any optical-flow algorithm - be it Twixtor or whatever will have crisp frames to do a more accurate analysis and frame interpolation from. I do this all the time for handheld shots where i know i want to re-time to slow motion. I can then add motion blur back into the plate (if I need to add any) with RSMB - Reel Smart motion blur - plugin for AE.1 point

Can someone do me a huge quick Twixtor favor?
kaylee reacted to BrorSvensson for a topic
i've done comparison with all the big options for optical flow/twixtor effects. From what i could in tell this is the list i got, the things i judged was how smooth the clip got, how the background acted behind the subject and the amount of artefacts. 1. Da vinci Resolve 2. Twixtor 3. Fcpx 4. after effects timewarp 5. Sony vegas (unusable) One thing to add is if you like to add the effect which i use sometime were you have a clip of lets say a skateboarder jumping and you want do have a super slow motion clip of it just floating in the air for a couple of seconds and you slow the clip down to 2-3% i found that the built in FCPX optical flow worked the best, both twixtor and da vinci have a hard time making up that many frames and i found that i got some stuttering.1 point -

BlackMagic Micro Cinema Update?
John Emery reacted to mercer for a topic
@John Emery I just spent the morning messing with the files in FCPX/Color Finale and FilmConvert... And the latitude is simply astonishing. I can now see what all the hype is about 10bit color and high DR. I was planning on keeping my G7 for more run and gun applications, but the IQ with the micro is so next level... I may just sell the G7. And I think once I rig this a little more efficiently, the micro could be a fine run and gun camera, in it's own right.1 point -

Matte Box Recommendations?
Ed Andrews reacted to Chris Bernard for a topic
Ed, if you are in London I'd check out Shoot35. Very decent Mattebox for the money. I had their original one and a smaller one they sadly don't make any more. Bright Tangerine looks like the one to beat today. If I could do it over I'd get a box that supports 4 x 5.65. I've found it really hard to find the 4 x 4 filters I'd like to use in the used market. Some filters like the Tiffen Indie IR ND line only seem to be available in the 4 x 5.65 range. https://www.shoot35.com/1 point -

28mm lenses with long focus throw? Usability of combined wideangle adapter

There is more than one person doing the hacks, and the person in charge of creating a great package of them decided to drop the bitrate hacks and memory hacks by Vasile to update to newest firmware. The latest hack package DOES NOT WORK on 1.4 only on 1.41. Meaning that if I want all the features I have to deal with two different hacks on one camera that each require different firmware to run. NOT an ideal.1 point

BlackMagic Micro Cinema Update?

I really dig the noise of the Micro, and every day I like this cam a bit more. I was decided on the 4.6K Mini, and was just holding back because of the magenta issues... but I must say I'm in no hurry right now. And if I don't see something that trueIy blows me away from the Mini soon, I think I'm getting a 2nd Micro/speedbooster instead.1 point -

28mm lenses with long focus throw? Usability of combined wideangle adapter
PannySVHS reacted to Justin Bacle for a topic
I just checked the focus throw on the minolta, and well, it is very small (between 90° and 120°). But strangely enough, I had never any problem focusing on this lens. (Although, at 28mm and f/3,5 , everything is pretty much in focus)1 point -
Hello everybody, I own an NX1 and I was thinking if it were possible to implement some Custom Cropmarks and black bars in the Mod, like in Magic Lantern. If I remember well, in early versions of the original fw there were no lines or cropmarks, so maybe comparing new ones with that ones we can find the way. They would be veeeery useful to frame correctly for a cinemascope look, or to avoid shooting on the "safe area" - In case we have to stabilize footage in post. What do you think? Is it possible? Thank You1 point

Custom Cropmarks in the MOD?
MonGe El GenioMusical reacted to SMGJohn for a topic
I know the Blackmagic Video Assist got them, I would save up for one because its kind of future proof, the 1080p screen is very cheap for all the good features it gives you, it also lets you load a LUT so you wont have to do the conversion in post, its already done in the recorder inside the screen and edit ready in your SD card. It also feels more premium than its competitors which frankly, got good features but lacks everywhere else specially battery life. Powering a SSD requires considerably more power than powering a tiny SD card.1 point -

Marco Tecno reacted to SMGJohn for a topic
You also forgot that the A7 Mark II series overheats when shooting UHD/4k and 120fps. I know some with A7sII because they love astrophotography, they work fine in winter, but when the summer comes they start overheating specially under heavy workload, its either the camera overheats or the battery runs out. Its a killer feature if you ask me, I worked on some productions were I do not even have time to think I just gotta be ready to run with the camera in my hand to the other location perhaps its just poor production crew but imagine if my camera ran out of all my batteries or it started overheating, bad business for all of us.1 point -
BlackMagic Micro Cinema Update?

Last week I was in Berlin at Tom Antos' workshop, we used the Ursa Mini 4K. Beautiful camera, great images, but I thought it was ready to shoot with, whereas there are a lot of things to rig before shooting. So I'm more then happy to have the Micro Cinema, that for sure it is not comfortable like a GH4 or a A7s, but at the end it is small enough to work with I still have to become familiar with its menu and buttons, but I love the images Micro returns.1 point -

Canon 1DX-II vs. 1DC - Which one would you buy?
BenEricson reacted to independent for a topic
That's exactly the problem, which you're contributing to. Some jobs are incredibly hard - if not impossible - if you underestimate the difficulty of focusing unrehearsed movement. Speaking of newcomers, it would be a disservice to any novices to claim that you can "pull focus on the run" with "just practice." Because you can read minds and anticipate whichever way your subject will go? Amazing. So all this time, filmmakers have been using tape measures, focus marks, blocking, assistant cameramen, specific monitors for confirming focus.... When all they needed was practice? Trust me, you're being the dick here, because here in New York City we'd tell you straight up you're full of shit. Even the best dedicated focus pullers in the industry miss some shots for live events and documentary work because it's spontaneous movement, you can be shooting at a wide spot under practical lighting, etc. And they're amazing at a tough job, and they earn their keep. It's a lot more respectful to recognize that these cameras are all tools, many of which have their limitations, but to know them and make informed decisions.1 point -
Yeah I used to own the A7s I also used the GH4 but the tiny sensor almost gave me tumour in low light, great camera otherwise you just need light, a lot of it. A7s is, lets just say............ A good photo low light camera, but not so much for video...... 1080p and horrid rolling shutter with terrible menus and God awful ergonomics even worse than the A7sII/A7rII In a way the NX1 is the perfect camera, its got the perfect body, its got all the tech inside we just needed to unlock the goodies in video mode. Photos are a class of its own too, only Nikon beats it in APS-C size when it comes to photography. I wish the rumour of Nikon buying Samsung camera line was true, I would pay my left leg for a Nikon NX2 with that great video features and mirrorless Samsung sensor tech with a Nikon mount.1 point

Compact camera for run&gun filmmaking
JazzBox reacted to fuzzynormal for a topic
After using 5axis stabilization for a year and a half now, I gotta say I'm somewhat reliant on it. The ability to shoot clean stable shots without a tripod is wonderful. Also, drifting and creating small dolly shots is easy and fun. I'd love to get a GX7markII, but really need the audio input for a documentary series I'm doing. (Not enough time in post production to record then sync hours upon hours of outboard broll audio) so I'm sticking with my EM5II for now. If you don't require that sort of audio, Pany's new cam with 5axis would be my ideal; also, manual lenses with a speedbooster. Got my hands on the camera yesterday. The stabilizer is on par, if not a touch better, than Oly's1 point -

Bigger formtas are totally useless, specially medium format. Don't buy any lenses for it, its totally crap, expensive and complicated. Largeformat cameras are only sold to rich people and fashion photographers who need to appear professional with big cameras. The obvious differences you can see in comparisons between different formats are only in our minds.1 point
