  1. Agreed, the bitrate is by far the most important improvement. From my point of view, there is only one thing that I would really happy to get, that is an improvement in low light performance.

  2. Amira is like a lighter, simpler Alexa. Amira is just a beautiful, even the 200fps looks amazing from it, and you can get upscaled 4k that looks better than some native 4K. here's an unused shot from a shoot on Amira. This is 1080p i beleive 200fps 422HQ in log. Try it out! This link will work in about an hour. https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/9922139/A002C001_160503_R4SJ.mov You can move colour all over the place, the latitude is incredible. It's pretty heavy though so not suitable for everything, but in pure image terms I'd give it the number-one spot.

  3. Im excited to buy an mark ii when the mark Iv drops. I know a lot of people who skipped the upgrade to the mark iii because of the not to big changes. I think the mark ii will hit <500$ mark.

  4. I feel the same way 180mbps I only need as well. Thanks again everyone. Loving my NX1 on 1.40 with bitrate hack

  5. If you want to make it easy, put whatever you got on f8, shoot wide, manual focus, and have fun. Technical considerations are all well and good, but if you're having a blast just grabbing cool shots and the vibe on set (or when documenting stuff) is loose and fun, that's a heck of a lot more important than anything else. Don't get in your own way when filming!

  6. agreed DPStewart, for me personally, I dont care about any of the additions, bit rate is the only thing I care about so far as I have an NX1. I am still yet to try it, as my camera is currently travelling with my brother. but looking forward to giving it a go when I get it back! keep up the good work all involved, ..and I think most following the progress of the hack know where credit is due where the credit is due.

  7. I don't exactly understand why anyone would even want to use a hack that doesn't increase the bit rate and image quality.

  8. On a side note...if you are shooting handheld or you know you will want to re-time in post, it is a good idea to dial up your shutter speed to reduce or eliminate motion blur as much as possible. That way, any optical-flow algorithm - be it Twixtor or whatever will have crisp frames to do a more accurate analysis and frame interpolation from. I do this all the time for handheld shots where i know i want to re-time to slow motion. I can then add motion blur back into the plate (if I need to add any) with RSMB - Reel Smart motion blur - plugin for AE.

  9. I spoke via chat with a panasonic sales agent and she told me the gx85 outputs 4k 10bit 422 to an external recorder. Wow!

  10. Finally got mine through. I've done a few blind test shots with some old Angeniuex glass and the picture quality is superb. It's going to be a shitter to rig properly though...

  11. i goggled "music video" and this came up. director is some guy named paul thomas anderson. doesnt seem to match your formula. first time director maybe? clearly not a "pro"

  12. Just curious. Maybe I've been watching too many test videos with the cheap(er) cameras. Of course the specs can't really say how the colors and organic feel are still the best out there. Is the Alexa still everyone's dream camera vs f65, RED Dragon, BM4.6k, Bolex, c300ii etc? Anyone have footage or experience to share to say either way? Obviously a for fun topic, not like looking at a purchase

  13. I shot a small narrative (I won't call it a "short") mixing all 1.33x anamorphic adapters with various taking lenses. The goal was to test out if all that talk of "this adapter is good, this one is bad", to see if we can actually notice the difference between lenses when there's a story being told. I included both well lit and low light shots to evaluate performance with different apertures. The camera used was Kinefinity's Kinemini 4k, and I shot it all raw for more flexibility in post. Taking lenses were all Russian, from 28 up to 135mm. The blog post has a cheat chart with all the data for each shot. Can you tell when this or that lens is being used? Is there anything in particular that bugs you? Do you think this test makes the difference between 1.33x adapters easier to notice? Lenses used were Century Optics WS-13, Panasonic LA7200, Isco 16:9 Video Attachment I, SLR Magic Anamorphot 1.33x-50, Century Optics 16:9 (the small one). http://www.tferradans.com/blog/?p=8333 There's more info on the blog post above, but if you're feeling lazy, here's the video.

  14. I found it easier to shoot public if you wear an uniform or look like a tourist, I dunno why but people just automatically just ignore you. You occasionally get children coming up to you though who wants to be on television, after a while its gets VERY annoying but its not like you can yell at them in the public.

  15. Amazing, I wish I had the balls like you to just film public like that, I tried but maybe there is still some shyness inside of me. That and everytime you pull a big camera in the public in such a small city as I live, people instantly look weird at you. What is your secret?

  16. Oh bloody hell. Now you've got me interested in ML 5D mk II. I've never used it for raw video. Kind of like the idea of using an "old dinosaur", adds to it in some emotional way. The manufacturers have skipped making 1080p near perfect in favour of brittle, highly compressed 4K images. What we are getting is insanely high resolution images with poor compression artefacts - when what we need is lovely 1080p with thick, chunky images. Ive got other raw cameras on my radar, and maybe this 5D II for fun!

  17. Alexa is king, Alexa Mini is queen...Amira is the prince. VariCam is probably one or two generations away from entering the castle with it's sword drawn...but King Arri will probably put stop to that revolting nonsense. F65 is a Knight at the round table If the big boys stopped waving their resolution and iso performance stats around - and instead worried more about colour rendition and simply a 'nice looking image', then Arri would have a contender. As it is however - nobody understands what a filmic image should be, or how crews are meant to work around a camera - quite like Arri does.

  18. It's still king in my opinion. I"m blown away at how close the UM46K can get though. I think if you pick up any of those cameras you listed, you are good to go.

  19. I'll never understand that when a new tool is released to make life easier, there's a weird backlash. So what if people have been making due without it for years? If it makes life easier and makes the practice of what you're doing (in this case, pulling focus) more consistent and reliable, why not embrace it? It's just a tool. Don't use it if you don't want to or feel like you don't need to, but when manufacturers give us more options and open up more creative possibilities, it should always be celebrated IMO.

  22. Had the chance to get one with 49k clicks for 650€, with grip, batteries and 4 8GB CF cards, regret not taking it, have been lurking ebay ever since to try and get something like that, if I find one at 500€ I'll jump on it right away.

  23. Well, on a 64gb card, Prores HQ gives med 40 min and RAW 3:1 gives me 36 min. I don't really change shutter speed, I set it for 172 or 180 depending on 24/25 fps. And when i shoot raw i don't really fiddle with that either, gust go between 5400 for daylight and 3200 for artificial light. I bought the video assist because it was real cheap, but i do miss waveform and false color a lot! Buying the Gratical eye soon for that but then there's the battery issue where the setup goes more "traditional handheld" which i prefer anyway. Are you talking about the shots in the club? I didn't do much, exposed and pointed the camera, you know;)

  28. i've done comparison with all the big options for optical flow/twixtor effects. From what i could in tell this is the list i got, the things i judged was how smooth the clip got, how the background acted behind the subject and the amount of artefacts. 1. Da vinci Resolve 2. Twixtor 3. Fcpx 4. after effects timewarp 5. Sony vegas (unusable) One thing to add is if you like to add the effect which i use sometime were you have a clip of lets say a skateboarder jumping and you want do have a super slow motion clip of it just floating in the air for a couple of seconds and you slow the clip down to 2-3% i found that the built in FCPX optical flow worked the best, both twixtor and da vinci have a hard time making up that many frames and i found that i got some stuttering.

  30. @John Emery I just spent the morning messing with the files in FCPX/Color Finale and FilmConvert... And the latitude is simply astonishing. I can now see what all the hype is about 10bit color and high DR. I was planning on keeping my G7 for more run and gun applications, but the IQ with the micro is so next level... I may just sell the G7. And I think once I rig this a little more efficiently, the micro could be a fine run and gun camera, in it's own right.

  31. All handheld, 5 axis IS and warp stabilizer in PP. [From his comments on Vimeo in french: EmericPRO3 days ago Merci Cyril !

  33. Last week I was in Berlin at Tom Antos' workshop, we used the Ursa Mini 4K. Beautiful camera, great images, but I thought it was ready to shoot with, whereas there are a lot of things to rig before shooting. So I'm more then happy to have the Micro Cinema, that for sure it is not comfortable like a GH4 or a A7s, but at the end it is small enough to work with I still have to become familiar with its menu and buttons, but I love the images Micro returns.

  34. Have you tried the Leeming One LUT for both CineD and Vlog...$23 for both and comes with settings for each profile and detailed explanation on exposure settings, zebras and ETTR...amazing difference and skin tones are the best out of the camera IMO...essentially rec709 Luts...gets you to a really good grading point...excellent value and you may seriously reconsider your upgrade!...GH4 with CineD and Leeming One...sorry...a bit off topic, but....

  35. i now use resolve as my main Nle instead of adobe premiere/after effects and i find the built in "twixtor" to be just as good if not better than the AE version.

  38. Léon A.K.A 'The Professional' is not only my favourite Action film, but probably my favourite film all round. Young Luc Besson at his finest, drawing upon his real life admirations from an illegally young girl...add guns, Portman, Reno and a crazy ass Oldman performance all in glorious Anamorphic, you have a winner right there.

  40. In the commercial sense of the term, well no, this video is not a "music video" - something which is made to sell records, concert tickets, merchandise and generally promote the brand of the artist. I assume this video was not made for that function. For the purpose that it's made though - the filmmaker can call it whatever he wants. A short film, vacation video, visual poetry, video journal, experiment, music video, whatever. Does it really matter? I was more interested in the shots accompanied by the music track. I enjoyed watching both in unison. It's a music video to him whether we like it or not. And he did very well.

  41. I for one enjoy hearing people try to assign what is and isn't art. Makes it easy to weed out whose opinion I should care about.

  42. No one else has said it, so I will... This is NOT a music video. It is a series of random clips with some background music. And the two are not the same. Frankly, it looks more like vacation footage.
