This is a non-scientific but comprehensive comparison of 1DC and 1DX II video quality. The 1DX II was kindly provided by Toronto based photographer Paul O'Neil We tested sharpness/resolution as well as dynamic range and noise performance. Two cameras were setup side by side and kept the same exposure and white balance, videos were recorded at the same time to avoid lighting variance. Lenses were both Canon 24-70 f2.8L II, at f5.6 for optimal performance. For sharpness/resolution comparison, we used neutral profile with 0, -4, -2, 0 setting. Please view the following images using the FULL SIZE option. Test scene: Results: 1DC and 1DX II have the same sharpness in HD 24/25/30p (same sensor readout). In 50/60p, 1DX II is sharper (better sensor readout) and it kept the same sharpness at 100/120p. Super 35 mode on 1DC remains the sharpest and most detailed 1080p of all modes. Two cameras have the same sharpness in 4K. Test scenes: Results: in neutral profile with -4 contrast, 1DC and 1DX II have about the same amount of DR, however 1DX II is nosier in the shadow (more chroma noise). 1DC in C-Log gives more detail in the highlight. Other observation: with the same white balance setting, 1DX II colour seems slightly warmer and a tad desaturated than 1DC in neutral profile. Conclusion: 1DX II is a camera with advanced video capabilities (HD 120p, 4K 60p, DPAF), 1DC still deserves its "C" badge for the very detailed Super 35mm HD and higher DR C-Log. I would rather not take sides. I support what both of you are working on and at this point they are quite different mods that appeal to different peoples needs. Vasile is working on a lean and clean mod with only a few features(right now its just bit-rate) and Kinoseed is working on squeezing as much as possible out of these two amazing cameras (witch to date has been amazing what he has been able to get out of them). Having said that It doesn't really matter what bill gates stole from Steve jobs or what Steve stole from bill gates they both have two different products for two different demographics. Besides I would hope that if someone comes up with a better way of doing something or something super useful the other would use it as well. You guys are both publishing as open source don't forget. Full disclosure, All I really care about at this time is the bit-rate hack so I am leaning towards vasile's stripped down mod at this point in time but I really like what kinoseed is doing as well. As stated above my preference would be a world were everyone could get along and work together to exchanging ideas, even if they are working on separate projects/mods. unfortunately I know that is not really the world we live in .

I guess some clarifications are in order. NX-KS works with the new fw versions (1.12 / 1.41) for both cameras, and sets the bitrates as before, with one addition of 400Mbps for time-lapses. @MountneerMan, vasile was never really part of NX-KS, from the very start I did uses his mod, but very soon after Otto made "poker" I started using that, which allowed for faster loading, and higher stable bitrates. Vasile, even tough apparently he obfuscated the bitrates and had to be "hacked" to be used with "poker" was given full credit. Lets say that "falling out" is put mildly as there was never a "functioning team", often resulting him demanding of proof for this or that, like when I posted a very high-bit video, he demanded that I show him jump-table for a hack or give him credit for the video that I made, as "apparently I modified the bitrates using his spreadsheet" ... and so forth. Lets say the constant slander was almost a harassment. When the new FW showed up, I gave him the new addresses, but the values were suspect, and after waiting a week for him to produce the new bitrates (as I suspected were different) he just said "they are the same" while apparently he's been working on his "mod". Well something didn't add up as the values from Samsung did not match Vasiles. So I redid his hack, and found he had miscalculated the values 4 bits out of 8 bytes, (which was not critical in the end, but gave different values) maybe it was not from his calculations, but error from his obfuscation - no idea, didn't really care to check his work that much. I can't speak of his new "mod", as I have not checked it, and don't intend to. But since he didn't contribute anything for the latest NX-KS mod, and only made sure his work can't be really used as opensource, was enough to let him go and do his own thing, although teaming with Otto was great. That about sums it up. : ) But of course I had to say Otto has my full respect! He is the one that made it all possible.

You may want to wait some more unless you want to test again later on. After I get back the burner camera from repairs I will try to put together an even smaller mod, which should have less resource consumption (read: memory) than what I have out now. And I also intend to break the bluetooth dependency but this is not news. In general you should keep an eye on work in progress and on work finished or abandoned. The best place for requests is (AFAIAC) to add to this on github.

As much as I dislike the KS and Vasile breakup, you can't deny that competition is the single greatest driver of innovation (e.g., space race, microchips, mobile phone technology, etc..) Teamwork is overrated KS + Vasile 4ever

Yeah I agree, the Roki 12mm f2 is awesome, and for me, it's the obvious choice for an ultra-wide on NX cameras. It's very small and lightweight, and of course it's f2! I used to own the 10-18mm, loved it, but had to sell it for the same reasons as Ricardo, as sadly it's just unusable with fly-by-wire adapted. I also briefly owned the sigma 10-20mm, which I bought to replace the canon, it was fine, but too slow for my needs. The rokinon 12mm f2 is both very sharp and very fast! Awesome for steadicam stuff (including low light) and astrophotography as well. For me the extra stop was more useful than the zoom and 1 millimeter more width of the tokina 11-16 (the rokinon is also cheaper.) If all you care about is the widest glass you can possibly get, there is also the Sigma 8-16mm, which I believe is the widest rectilinear glass ever made for crop cameras. I've never used it, but it's fairly pricey and I have heard it's not the sharpest lens. You never know though!

A fair chunk of this new LUMIX video footage I've seen online seems to be shot by photography enthusiasts that might be, umm... let's just say technically challenged when it comes to finessing motion pictures. The old power plant footage is good to my eye, however. At any rate, I've certainly seen user error, bad shutter speeds -- and even lousy vimeo playback, which could be an issue. I suppose this should be expected. Not too many film pros are clamoring to get their hand on a new $700 camera like the GX85 and create videos that they would then screen online. You often get the dudes that like playing with new toys, not necessarily the ones that'll take their time to understand how to creatively maximize the motion picture aesthetic. That said, many people do seem to have a more discerning eye than me in regards to motion cadence. Maybe there is something about it that you don't like. Perhaps even a 24fps rate makes you uncomfortable? The best bet is to get ahold of actual camera files and see what you think using them in your NLE. Myself? I like using a 0° shutter with 24p. A good dose of motion blur and the traditional film frame rate is a "flaw" I actually sorta like. Not typical, but I prefer certain imperfections in my image. Anything to take the edge off the clinical quality of digital and lean it towards an analog feel.

As someone who has yet to install the hacks...it would be nice for Andrew to install them and spotlight these developments with a proper article. You can find tons of information / reviews of the ML hacks for Cannon...all of this for the NX1 is found on two forums. Since I also purchased Andrew's NX1 guide, I think that should be updated with at least a summary of the possibilities that are now possible and how that can lead to a better image.

I think Tokina 11-16mm F2.8 may be good solution for you. It's a s35 lens and you can use the Nikon version, adapt it to Samsung with aperture control.

Just to update those of you who are not on dpreview but there has been a falling out between Kino Seed (primary contributor of NX-KS) and vasile (the original bitrate hack creator). They are now producing separate hacks. Vasile has a hack that has a UI, auto install and uninstall and works on both the new versions of NX1 and NX500. He is going to work on a new way of implementing the hack so it does not need BT to work and should speed up the hack. You can find his hack here. There are a few UI bugs but things are looking really good so far. I believe NX-KS now has a bitrate hack as well for the NX500 but not for the NX1 yet. He has also implemented a bunch of other neat hacks such as zoom exposure and stuff. None of these other hacks are really useful to me but others on dpreview are loving them. P.S. I liked it better when we had one hack not two and its hard to tell if this is going to be a good thing or not but I am not in a position to complain.... I got my high bitrate

At NAB Atomos announced that they would release HDR-update for Ninja Blade, Shogun, Ninja Assassin and Shogun Studio in May 2016, not that it will be real HDR, but any upgrade possible is very appreciated by those who like me use it on every day of filming. So it's the 31st of May and we have yet to get any information about the update although the front page of their website state that they all support HDR. Did I miss the update? I can't find it anywhere on the website. I don't want to blame Atomos as I appreciate this very much, I just want some information about the update and I don't think I am alone in this.

Here is some new footage that I found from the upcoming Canon 1DX Mkii. This camera is shaping up to be very interesting. Next week is going to be fun... That's when the new Canon 1DX Mkii will start shipping. Curious to hear everyone's feedback.

Just wondering if anybody else here shoots 24fps with shutter speed set at 1/40? and what is your opinions on the NX1s I find using 1/50 looks far too choppy, I remember noam kroll saying the gh3 was kind of famous for this also.always looked best at 1/40. it would seem to fit with what we have already seen samsung do with this camera. adding rediculous sharpening and noise reduction, and even when you think you have turned it off or lowered it, you in-fact have not. It seems their aim was to have a deceiving image that looked cleaner and sharper than any other camer on the market. A good example is the attached video at 58 seconds, compared to the 5d in the rest of the video. the nx1 just has such a video movement feel at 1/50.

I notice that the ground glass makes as a buffer high and low lights, such as expanding the dynamic range, as well as having other image structure, that gives me the feeling more 3D Pop, regardless of the depth of field is most evident .

Hi, Tupp Yes, you can make "Swing / Tilt / Shift" movement, thanks to the OmegaViwe head, but the image circles I use lenses are tight and do not spare much image to play

Good to know that the Rokinon 12mm is a good lens. I was looking at the Cine version in micro 4/3 for my BMMCC.

Rolling shutter is about 50% of 1DC.

quick test with gx80 comparing it to gh2 on a gimbal. Of course it cannot replace a gimbl, but i wanted to test the limits.

Not going to defend my own work (beyond what I wrote above) since I will be accused I am partial to it and that I would twist things to defend it. Please look it over yourself on github and make your own opinion. And/or ask someone else to do it for you or help you do it. I will let my work posted on github advocate my position.

You can sync dual system audio using Genlock timecode and/or with a slate. I don't know how you'd monitor your internal audio either, unless maybe you use an external monitor or recorder with a headphone jack. Realistically, unmonitorable line-level audio is little more than a good cue/scratch track.

ProRes being edit friendly is key to the Alexa's success on the high end. Look at Sony and Red quickly trying to catch up. If you bring in an assistant editor to transcode footage and it takes an extra day to transcode it all, that's $400 at least to hire an ae. Pretty quickly the difference in price between an Amira an F55 become irrelevant. With the Red this is an even slower process.

My mistake, Sanveer is correct. The video was tagged with GX80/GX85 tags but was not shot using the camera. It was tagged because their next project will be shot completely using the GX80/GX85.

For Linux I highly recommend kdenlive. It's easily the best free NLE I've seen, it handles my gh3 footage no problem. I know there are better proprietary options, but you might be surprised at how capable kdenlive is.

Hey Michael, thanks for checking out! Bought a 20mm 2.8 from Canon two days ago. Gonna see how that one works out.

In the description it says that he voluntarily did not correct the images.. go figure! Quite the charming video, though, and lovely playing. Some shots are quite detailed and sharp (though less than what I've seen from the GX80/85 until now), others are just a blurry mess (like the one at 3:04). What gives? How would you compare the gx80's sharpness and detail in 4k video against your GH4? Is it better, worse or same? And now a quick question for those who already have this camera: is grading with the natural profile that much of a far cry from the CineLike? Cause I read this camera doesn't have a Cine profile, and I was wondering whether this can prove or not a real dealbreaker for someone who wants to shoot some good video too, although using it mainly as stills camera. I have reserved a GX80 from Amazon.de (btw, if you're interested, lowest GX80 prices in Europe, as far as I've seen) and it's bound to ship next month, but I'm still researching like crazy, even though I've already read a lot on this camera and I'm 95% sure of wanting to do that DSLR-> Mirrorless (m43) jump, especially with this camera, which looks to be a pretty good piece of equipment all around. Also, great article, this also made me discover Zoo Quest! Great stuff. And since this is my first post here, hello everyone.

give the crew a $60k budget to shoot, and a $20k budget to pay for the edit/post for a promo video for the nex5n and the results would be just as awe inspiring. The level of production value on this video makes it impossible to judge the camera because in real instances with these budgets they'd just add another $2k for the rental of an Alexa Mini for the couple of days of shooting. $80k for 8bit acquisition and a lens mount incapable of using real cinema lenses, or $82k for arriraw acquisition and the ability to use cooke s4's.. Nothing more annoying than consumer advertising techniques selling a dream to people that they'll be using a dslr to shoot these types of projects.
