The 4K Fuji X-T2 is here

Now even FujiFilm (the brand for a hipster's purest photography) of all people have got an affordable 4K camera!!!! Says an awful lot when even FujiFilm is beating Canon in the filmmaking stakes.5 points -
Its not clipping. In fact its perfect. With any digital image you really need to expose as hot as possible without clipping. When you pull the exposure back down to normal...all the noise that would have been there gets crushed and goes away. You did everything right. Here is a video of what I would do. Even have a way to give it a "look" at the end if you want. You really nailed the shot actually. Looks great.4 points

There are lots of info and even videos on YouTube. But until the official announcement there is little point in posting them. The get taken down rather quickly But here, http://www.fujirumors.com/online-now-full-fujifilm-x-t2-presentation-specsimagesproduct-description/ I've loved everything I've seen from the X-Pro2. I think Andrew was spot on with his review. The colors are outstanding. I also feel that the general opinion that the X-Pro2 had a low DR is rather false. Play with the files and you will be amazed at all the info that lurks in the shadows. What kept me from it where three things. 1. Already have two Leica M Rangefinder's. 2. A tad much Moire. 3. I knew the X-T2 was coming. I'm not much for preorders but I might book this baby today.3 points -
I'm so thankful to this forum. Its a place where I can get honest amazing feedback and a place that is open to thinking outside the box. I am DP for a pretty high profile web doc in Mexico and we are going to some exotic locations next week. I asked your opinion on what to get and I went with my gut. I got a used 1D C and I am so stoked to finally own a camera again instead of renting stuff. My B Cam operator will be rocking the C100 and we will have an a7S II that is there specifically for slow motion and thats it. A-Cam 1D C. We have a sound guy who will be recording and booming everything separate so the crappy internal audio isn't a problem with the A Cam. Just more syncing in post for the editor Im bringing my CONTAX Zeiss primes and will be prioritizing those over the typical Canon zooms. I get so bored with docs I see on Netflix and on VICE and I realized its cause everyone uses the same boring Canon Zooms. There is nothing sexy about the 24-105. Of course its practical and if we are in a run n gun situation, I will pop it on. But lens character is just as important as the Camera! I am so excited to pair my vintage CONTAX Zeiss lenses with the 1D C sensor. I have a feeling its going to be gold. I shot a doc in Nicaragua two months ago with the GH4 and it was nice and I was surprised by the IQ of it...but the 1D C has some sort of mojo about it that I can't explain. I shot with one in Haiti about 3 years ago when it was way out of my price range and loved it. Im stoked to be able to use it and to own one. As soon as I get home I will be directing a medium sized budget music video that has VFX and very fun lighting. I will use the 1D C for that too. So in the next month, I will have two very different experiences with it. Im pumped. Sure it will take up a ton of storage on this trip...but I can buy 2 5TB drives on amazon for like $300. Like Andrew said on this forum a while back when he got his 1D C: "Yes I may still regret it but you only live once. I believe at it's current used price it's a bargain, bonafide Hollywood cam." Honestly...seeing that these two hollywood films were shot on it...sold me on the camera. Im looking forward to getting it and doing some tests soon! I have it overnighted so I should receive it Friday. Cheers!3 points

@Michael Coffee No disrespect, but I think we just have different tastes in what looks "awesome" or "right." IMO, these are reference snapshots at best, maybe a nice reminder of a day you spent together to remember a person's face... nothing striking in terms of the tech of the 7D & 70-200 and frankly they could have been shot with any camera or phone. In terms of video, ANY camera Canon is offering right now under 1 grand wouldn't be even in the same ball park as the GX80. They're just too light on features and IQ for 2016. Maybe the 5DM4 will be available at a decent price... we'll see, but I have my doubts.3 points

When the A6300 overheats at 10min it's total crap. When Fuji does it it's brilliant because it can be increased to 30min with a grip, nevermind the fact that one can be used on the A6300 for the same effect3 points -

I was very doubtful ref my commitment to M4/3s after the G6 - useability great - but photo quality - wasn't convinced with - just didn't like the output much, dull, seemingly not great DR, and files didn't seem to like much post-processing Lightroom GX80 was cheap enough to take a punt on - at a minimum would make a great video recorder But .. GX80 from initial tests seems much better photo wise vs my G6 - photo ouput seems very similar in IQ to my Nex 5n - and that is a VERY good thing - the sensor to me seems much much improved3 points

Nobody cares? Then you are nobody ;-) since you are the one who does not care. Anyway, you don't understand what I mean, and this is probably a limit of me (as a writer) and of you, as someone ignoring the capabilities of a great camera. It's not 'my precious'. It's an outstanding piece of hardware, well ahead of its time that, like many other tech goods, was underrated and surpassed in sales by way inferior products, due to ignorance (i.e. lack of knowledge) of potential buyers, like those thinking that this xt2 is something 'new and great'.2 points -
Owned the NX1, outside of the S zooms, the rest are mediocre, the pancakes are especially dreadful if you want to MF, no BB AF either - a basic staple of just about any decent camera including the most basic Canon Rebel from 2003. Fuji's lens selection is vastly superior - and its what attracts many shooters to the X-mount. Samsung's are a joke in comparison. Nobody shopping Fuji cares about a dead system with a limited lens selection. Fuji's ergos, exposure controls on the body, the MF clutch mechanism and actual aperture rings are miles better than the NX1. Let it go, its a Fuji discussion, nobody cares about your precious NX1.2 points

Well, since he is excited by xt2, and nx1 is better in almost every way, and has been out since nov 2014, my question was legit. And...calling lenses a weak point of nx, makes think you never tried them. Same for ergonomics...nx1 is miles better than any fuji there.2 points -

I also have high hopes for this camera but you never know if there is a deal breaker lurking somewhere around the corner, especially from a company that didn't give much thought to video side in the past. IMO it is better to be patient and wait for reviews and GH5 arrival, and then make a decision.2 points -

I think it makes a difference, if a manufacturer tells you, that the camera is good for 30min recording, and then (after 10, sometimes even less) minutes it overheats or if one tells you: "10 minutes, that's it" and you really get those 10 minutes everytime From what I have heard, Fuji did a lot to get the heat down. Those new batteries are one of the things. (A bigger heatpipe is another). What I have heard too: they are not opposed to add more video funcionality with firmware updates, if people really use the camera for video. 4K is not full sensor, it's a mild crop (something like 5K). That way they could get 24, 25 and 30p at the same crop and not have another crop for 30p. Furthermore it reduces rolling shutter (should be below 30ms, which still is a lot, but better than A6300 and some others)2 points -
It basically makes the battery grip essential for video shooting, so we should just perceive it as one item and add to the price accordingly.2 points

I find that the vast majority of people who pirate movies would never see the film otherwise. It's the reason I laugh when studios used to trumpet about how much money they "lost" to piracy, when in reality the actual amount lost would be a small fraction of it. I would be ecstatic if I made a film that was heavily pirated because in the end, people will have seen my material and might tell someone else about it. And more to your point, it's a very valid view point. The video game industry is the same. There are tons of old DOS games that would be lost forever if they weren't ripped and put up for free. Archival is important and nobody else is stepping up to the plate so...2 points -

@mercer @John Matthews @Michael Coffee etc.. I have shot with a plethora of cameras including Fuji's, Panasonics, Sony's, Nikons (crop and full frame). In terms of JPEG output, the Fuji and (extremely surprisingly) the Sony a6300 have for me been the most pleasing. But in terms of RAW, they're all as good as you ever need them to be. What matters more than anything is the scene and the lens. If you don't believe me you can look through my photos http://www.sebcastilho.com/people/ The images can be downloaded too and EXIF data is in tact. Theres stills from all the cameras Ive used there including some film cameras. What matters a lot too is ergonomics and in this regard I find mirrorless cameras to have a big advantage over DSLRs due to their live-view autofocus capability, allowing you to get angles that are very difficult with a DSLR. @sanveer The write up probably won't happen for at least a few weeks because I want to shoot and edit some videos first. But if you have any questions you can message me.2 points

I can never really get anything from test videos like these.. in this case they may say more about the camera than others, since fuji picture profiles were used sometimes and will be used by people who get it for video, and most other cameras need a lot of adjusting first.. but it's all so cheesy I have no idea if it looks good. Anyone know yet if the d500 has the d750's secret formula but in 4k? That would give me some more hope here, since I was also unimpressed by those tests1 point

how would you grade this?
a_reynolds reacted to DPC for a topic
Very quick grade in FCPX + https://www.fcpeffects.com/products/white-balance-plugin (which I like a lot). I would suggest using Paul Leeming's LUT http://www.leeminglutone.com/ and following his advice on exposure. This will correct the Panasonic oranges that are clearly seen in your footage. It looks pretty soft to me too.1 point -
G7 Internal Recording + HDMI out?
andy lee reacted to DevonChris for a topic
The OP was asking about the G7, however the GX8 manual also states that you cannot use LIve view at the same time as recording to an external recorder via HDMI, however I was surprised to find that LV does in fact work when recording out through the HDMI. There is no simultaneous recording internally though. Maybe this is a beneficial bug so don't tell Panasonic! I was also suprised to find that the Atomos recorder recorded the manual focus assist screen so if you magnify the image in the LV to focus accurately by double clicking the MF PIP box, the Atomos records the magnified image too. This is fantastic as you can zoom in and out just by enabling/disabling MF assist (by tapping) on the live view screen - instant close ups.1 point -

This camera stops recording after 10 minutes in 4K and 15 minutes in 1080p to prevent overheating? It seems this camera has the same weaknesses as the A6300: You can't use it for long continuous recordings and it will probably have the same bad rolling shutter if it does 6K to 4K oversampling (would surpise me if Fujifilm has improved RS where Sony couldn't). Although, even with those weaknesses it beats A6300 with much better ergonomics and lens selection. Wasn't the introduction price of the X-T1 $1299? $1599 seems a bit too pricey imo just like the A6300 which was also overpriced compared to A6000. GX80/85 seems to offer a lot more bang for the buck if you ask me.1 point -

Fuji's lenses are larger than m43 because they're covering a larger sensor, but certainly not expensive, the 16/1.4 is cheaper than the Panasonic 12/1.4, and the 56/1.2 is cheaper than the 42.5/1.2 and so on. Fuji has a few excellent pancakes and the 35/2 as well. The upcoming 23/2 will be another gem. Fuji holds regular sales which helps to keep used prices down.1 point -

Congrats on your 1DC. It's an awesome camera that is often overlooked. As for those two films, I believe only Knock Knock was shot on the 1DC. It doesn't matter though. The 1DC has produced spectacular imagery in many high-end productions for film and TV. Best of all, no one suspects that you have a 4K cinema camera in your little tourist camera bag!1 point

C300ii has dropped to $12K
IronFilm reacted to Oliver Daniel for a topic
In every one of my local rental houses in the UK... all of them have said the C300 II is never getting asked for. One of them even sold off their C300 II's. My primary rental house, Provision, said that they've had to buy more FS7's as it's BY FAR the most requested camera now. I feel more are going for the FS7 because of 4k60p and the much better slow motion options. Canon really missed the boat there with the C300 II. The massive price decrease of the C300 II isn't a coincidence. That said, I enjoy using the original C300. It's a very simple, no frills, always works kinda camera. It will be interesting to look at the used market for the C300 II in a year or so.1 point -
In my experience with the gf1 and gx7 on the stills side, I like the results with vintage lenses, and they have bags of character, and a "snap shot" smaller film format feel.. a real still guy could probably get amazing results, but when I had even a aspc Canon 50d for a while, even with a crappy old canon kit zoom and on full auto, the pics coming out of that thing blew away anything I have been able to get with the Panasonics! Again, I'm no stills expert, but it seems you have to be a pretty serious photo guy to pull amazing images out of the Panasonics.. love them for video, apart from the motion.. can work around the colour.. but for stills - I would almost reach for my el cheapo $100 Samsung Galaxy J1 phone! MFT stills always just seem congested within the frame somehow for me.. the can't touch even the aspc Canon's for my tastes! I love the look of medium format stills even more Tons of options for stills, built in intevalvometer.. good burst rates etc - all the stills features, but no where near the Canon's etc for me! Sure the Panasonic can take ok photos, but all the photo's that make me say wow, and look like you could reach into the frame have usually been on a 5d or medium format cam.. never really seen an MFT still that really wowed me! Again, I am not a huge stills shooter in any way, just my two cents worth GX7 with Minolta 28mm GF1 with Olympus 25 2.8 4/3 Samsung Galaxy J1 smartphone1 point

This. Slow motion is so critical for music videos and many docs. Plus having 4K is handy, useful future proofing too. Electronic variable ND filter can be a killer feature for run and gun docs. I'd get the Sony FS5. Plus Sony 18-105mm f4 + Sony 35mm f1.8 OS + Sony 50mm f1.8 OS + Sony 70-200mm f2.8 (or the f4 version if you want to save money and/or weight) + Tokina 11-20mm f2.8 (in Nikon F mount).1 point
