  1. My first project with the GX80. Since size / weight does matter and securities are kinda picky, i had no choice but to leave my lovely Voigtländer 25 lens at home and put the Panasonic 20mm on it. I had mixed feelings especially I did not use this lens for a very long time but in the end, I am satisfied with the result. Grading was a breeze, skin tones need little to no adjustment and also this lens works quite well with the Tiffen Ultra Contrast Filter.

  2. I know, my purchases are getting out of hand. This time last year I couldn't dream of affording an XC10, no matter how much I wanted one. And then on my quest for my perfect camera and lenses, I acquired enough gear to resell for enough money to afford it this year... It's my own weird savings account. But now, I still have a bunch of lenses to sell and I still need a good interchangeable lens camera. I'll probably just get an Alexa next year... Seriously though, I am probably leaning towards the GX85 for my interchangeable lens camera, but I'm gonna wait and see what Canon releases at Photokina. One of my favorite things about my first outing with the XC10 for a couple hours yesterday was it reminded me of the good old days with Canon, so I'm intrigued to see what the new eos-m4 will bring, plus the rumored full frame mirrorless that Canon is supposed to release.

  3. @mercer Hey man, this is some beautiful footage, great feeling for light and shapes. Loving how you start and end with the tilt. Some great tones, some of the out of focus areas look like from a painting. Nice concept and effective use of tripod moves. Great job, not easy showing the beauty of foliage and trees. Some parts with the branches look again like from a painting of one of the greats of landscape painting like C.D.Friedrich. The girl is a woman and would spank Bobby´s tush if he would say "This is this and that is that".:) Hey man, I remember your musicvideo you did with FDs. You were another ambassador making me consider the FDs in combination with the G6. Was a good choice listening to you guys!:) cheers

  4. Whatever it is, I think the look is working against them - cartoony, bright colors - no it shouid be crappier looking - iphone-ish style - it's also lit too well - it should have been underexposed - more doc style man I should make my own found footage horror film

Yeah, it's definitely parfocal, so a crash zoom should work great. If you keep it at 5.6 and then attach a follow focus lever to the zoom ring, you can probably get some smooth zoom pulls. As far as IBIS, I have really shaky hands... I smoke too much and drink too much coffee, so my hands are all over the place and it was completely steady. I never used an Olympus, so I couldn't say for sure. One of the reasons why I wanted the XC10, is because I briefly had the Panny FZ300 and prior to the XC10, it was the funnest camera I ever owned, but unfortunately the IQ wasn't that great. Well that had the 5-Axis ibis in 1080p and the xc10 is just as good. I assume the 5-Axis in the fz300 1080p is the same as the 5-Axis in the GX85 4K, and from reading that thread, it seems they're comparable. I am going back out on Monday, so I will probably post some screen grabs or a small video by mid week.

  6. Very cool @PannySVHS I need to sit down and watch some tutorials, because every time I color I just go at it blind... Sometimes I think I literally have my eyes closed. Lol. i know what you mean about lenses. I've had a few mint lenses that I felt bad taking them out of their box. I've even bought duplicates sometimes. Yeah I noticed the FDs love greens. If you like cooler colors, you should give Minolta MCs a try. The 35mm f/1.8 is the most gorgeous lens I ever used. The bokeh is crazy creamy smooth. This was a couple years back with the 35mm 1.8 and maybe a couple shots with the 50mm 1.4 on my eos-m. The sound is horrible so don't leave the volume too high. BTW, you like that Hula Girl, don't you... What would Bobby say?

  7. Hallo NX World, the NX Booster it's coming soon! This is the Prototype Mark II. Marco do not worry, if I do not post my progress, is because I have a lot of work in my private life. Next week I start the test with Nx1 camera.

  8. Hallo video afficiandos! I recently read about @Inazuma´s and @John Matthews´ A3G3 for the GX80 and GX7 in the GX80 thread and @jase´ examples as well. I did some filming with this and another setting about three weeks ago. I´m kind of a Panny fan and have been enjoying the great value I´m getting out of my G6 I bought about a year ago. It was my first step into digital. So when I bought my Panny G6 last April due to bushman films and Andy Lee on Andrew´s forum, I had high expectations. I was exited about the nice HD footage the G6 let me shoot. Bought an editing machine with a 2nd generatoin I7 2600K- great value for starters one year ago. Now of the sudden I had this digi tech at my hands coming from SVHS-C camcorders when I was a teen. Just that Panasonic colors didn´t seem that awesome to me, rather just okay. Last fall I got my hands onto Davinci and a GTX970 and got myself started into the joys of messing around with video color. The G6 held a few surprises for me. I´m surprised by the color "hidden" in that 24mbps 24p codec and even the 28mbps for 50p. A friend of mine wanted me to test some slomo, if codec would hold up for 50p, if she could use Panny Slomo for a kind of a Ballhaus effect for her project. So there is no plotline here. All handheld, with a 28mm FD, WB at 7000K with A3G3 and some A3M9, harsh sun at 4-6pm. Some hoolahoop parts are shot in Extele and the closest framing is an additional larger percentage zoomed in with Davinci. So now I would like to share my share I got out of the Panasonic colors.

That's why I just bought a T2i and Nikkors. I'd thought about it since Andrew wrote abut Kendy Ty a couple of years ago, and upon rewatching his stuff, decided to get one. Also, I just like to experiment and try different cameras and lenses. I've never owned a Canon DSLR or Nikon lenses, so it's new and kind of exciting.

  10. I don't disagree with any of these comments. In fact, what you say is obvious on its face. My point was and still is whatever they are thinking it's not about making money. I think that is a serious mistake. It seems there's a HUGE part of the market they are totally snubbing. There are many who would be completely satisfied with the status quo of a model...most even. But for those, for instance, would like some added features for the C100 Mk II, but simply could never dream of owning a C300 mk II--and such people are likely to jump to Sony for want of a few simple features. I know what they've been thinking. In the light of their sales trajectory the past years what I wonder is why they keep thinking it.

  11. Freestyle scootering is a relative new sport so no shame there Thanks for the compliments! Yeah i think pretty much every camera made after (and) the 5d mark iii is good enough for most people, no needs to think that you need clinicly sharp NX1 4k to make an amazing video. Where the Sony A7 shines is with shallow dof stuff, like the 2016 setup video. It highlightes the awesomeness of the amazing full frame sensor and with the background being blured out you escape all the moire aliasing stuff.

  13. @PannySVHS Thanks for the kind words. That was the last video I did before I realized I knew absolutely nothing about "proper" video production. Sometimes I think it was better knowing nothing and trusting my gut, than the little I know now. "The girl is a woman and would spank Bobby´s tush if he would say "This is this and that is that".:)" HAHAHAHAHA!!!! "You... You." Man you are the best. Seriously, you have one of the best attitudes on this forum and are a laugh riot. I always look forward to your posts!!! As Matthew McConaughey said the last time we hung out shirtless... "Keep on keepin' on."

  14. I see DXOMark has reviewed the GX80 now - looks good to me http://www.dxomark.com/Reviews/Panasonic-Lumix-GX80-GX85-sensor-review-Diminutive-design similar DR to the APS-C sensor in my Nex 5n - which matches my qualitative views from the photos I've taken so far Bought a Hoya Pro ND16 filter the other day - what a difference it makes to the video quality I've seen a few complaints around various forums about the Dynamic Range on the GX80 in video - I'm surprised

  15. Im probably the only one on this forum that uses a Sony A7 to film videos, if you want to check out some samples you can watch my 5 latest videos https://www.youtube.com/user/4cfingers/videos I really like the camera with the headphone and mic jack, the 1080p 60 is decent and for me personally good enough for youtube. DR with portrait -3 contrast is similar to the 5d with -5 contrast. I shoot 50% stills and 50% and i think its a very versitile camera when using manual lenses, its easy to focus with the beautiful and sharp EVF. The A7r and A7 have nearly identical video performance.

  17. For me, down rezed 4k always turns out better 1080p than just shooting straight 1080p. But the 1080p is beautiful as a Ding an sich. Mostly, I just use it for slo-mo. Regarding C-log, there's some debate about the exposure issue, I shot C-log over exposing with iffy results, but Jem Schofield recommends shooting C-log with 18% grey at about 31 IRE, and white at 62 IRE. If you don't have a wave form to help you expose 18% grey, I'd recommend putting your Zebra at 70% and not letting your highlights in C-log go over that. You'll find your lowest exposure setting in Log will then be between 10 or 15% IRE. Too bad the XC10 doesn't at least have a histogram...waveform would be better. Jem Schofield discusses log exposure and reading a wave form in one of the video tutorial he does on the Canon C100 cinema camera. you can find it on youtube pretty easily. When I expose that way I always get better results so far. If you have a Ninja II, or some external monitor you can get a good idea of how to expose using a gray card by checking the monitor's waveform. C-log exposed correctly should show the exposed gray card at just over 30 IRE when you fill the cameras image with the gray card shot under the light you're going to be shooting in. If you get the gray card exposed correctly and then use a white card you'll see the white automatically shows exposure at just over 60 IRE. I find the XC10 censor just a bit bright. So when I shoot in TV mode I adjust the exposure compensation down about 1/2. I often grade C-log by hand with FCPX and Color finale--and get results that makes me happy with minimal angst. I'm sure others here with more experience will have more to say about exposing LOG. A wave form or histogram will give you some sense of what proper exposure that works for you is, and then you'll be off to the races. Hope this is helpful. PS: I just noted you're a regular here--so sorry for going over all kinds of stuff you, no doubt, know better than I. But it might just help someone else with the same questions but not the same level of skill.

  18. Exactly. This is almost totally a video camera with the courtesy of photos in a pinch. But once you load in some Canon Log footage to your NLE at 305mbps, see how robustly grades, how sharp and clean the Log image can be made, how beautiful the colors are, and how it sits well along side of the C300 mk II image---you feel fortunate you can get a camera for under 2k that will produce an image that grades and looks like that. I do lots of talking head educational videos, and skin tones and skin color is gorgeous, with beautiful detail without looking harsh. The outdoor video---for a person with skill it makes beautiful landscape shots and anything you want, and it's surprisingly good in lower light---and with a small amount of effort it creates beautiful DOF shots with beautiful Boca. The reason you can shoot 4k with these other cams is because their bit rates are cruddy, 8bit --that fall apart. The XC10 does all this high bit rate 422, etc, IN camera--no rig, nothing to schlep around. With the XC10 you'll be getting high quality footage while the rigged up people will be fiddling with equipment and not coming out with footage that can approximate the XC10. Rigs are a burden and an albatross. Why schlep them around--just to look "professional?" You'll never appreciate this camera by looking at some cursed piece of paper. For someone with a degree of skill, who loves beautiful color, and sharp clean imagery, this seems an ideal camera for all sorts of purposes. Highly underrated, especially by those who have never taken the time to really try it. Image and color and grading compared to Sony---the Sony doesn't can't even come up to the plate.

  19. I hadn't check your site here for a few months because of being busy with other things. Glad I did. Wow. What a great review. And only a few days ago I was wondering if anyone had done a comparison of the Sony RX and the XC10...and voila!!! In early May, after reading reviews and seeing video I decided to buy an XC10. To be brief, everything you mentioned just jumped right out at me. I own a C300 Mk II, and matching them in 4k Log is easy. I shoot Log almost all the time, and grading the XC10 yields a beautiful image in color and tone, which post-processing sharpening makes look even more amazing. This camera is everything you say it is---and more. And the more I shoot with it the more it knocks me out. Canon have a winner with this camera, and I suspect it will grow considerably in acceptance as more and more people overcome their biases and give it a fair try. This is being written post June firmware update--which, IMO, did only a marginal improvement of the sluggish auto-focus. And the camera still fixes on backgrounds in certain instances and no amount of coaxing will make it fix on the proper object-- even when you put it in MF and program one of the buttons for one-shot. But this happens only occasionally, and when it does the lighting is usually not the best. The loop combined with the joystick work great, and the loop gives added stabilization to hand held shooting. And did I say the image quality was beautiful--clean, and sharp and the Clog amazing??? At times I use a variable ND in combination with the internal ND---it gets pretty harsh under a bright Texas summer sun--and combining the filters on a very bright day works a treat. Often I end up "riding" the ND filter on the lens and the combined ND filters pretty much cover 99% of harsh outdoor exposure issues in bright sunlight. Add a couple more buttons, improve the AF and a few other tweaks and produce a second iteration and I"ll buy it in a heartbeat. I can't wait for the C300 mk ii firmware upgrade and Clog 3--which is supposed to be easier to grade and not as flat as Clog 2. I'm hoping Clog3 and the XC10 Clog will be easier to match than Clog 2. Andrew, thanks again for this great review. I plan to read over it several times to get all the the many points you made. Thanks for sharing your knowledge so generously.

Mitakon is the best focal reducer in this price range.....RJ LENS TURBO IS CRAP, if someone is deciding what to get avoid this RJ has blue cast all over the place. well I don't know what is the look you are going for...the first sets looks more cinematic to me, the second set is more videoish...

Took her out this morning and the manual zoom is so nice, you don't really miss the power zoom. With a quick flick of the wrist, you can go from 24-70mm. The focus ring is better than I thought it would be after hearing all the horror stories about it. It's decent on the long end to get some shallow depth. Apparently, it also function in auto mode, where you slightly turn the focus ring and then it automatically finishes the rack for you. Haven't tested it yet but it looked great on the videos I've seen.

Ah, the good old days...there's nothing like the smell of miniDV tape rolling at the end of a long day :-) I have been seriously thinking about the XC10 as well, in NZ I can get it for ~$1500 USD so very very tempting. While I love my lens collection, I think it would be refreshing to have something similar to a camcorder experience, that is 'self contained' and just works without various paraphernalia.

    Eos M question

On Ebay, EOSM bodies are selling for as low as US$135. That's a nice little inexpensive backup camera! In addition, it is very versatile in regards to lenses and adapters. I have a focal reducer, a tilt-swing adapter and a couple of adapters (one dummy Nikkor and one smart Canon EF). The ability to do tilt-swing on APS-C with full frame lenses in amazing, and the focal reducer effectively makes the APS-C a full frame sensor! If you just want to boost the h264 bitrate, you are probably better off going with ML, rather than TL. TL is older and probably less stable (although it seems that the most recent ML builds write odd colors to the Canon menus on the EOSM). Consider using TL for getting all-I frames in h264 (along with boosted bitrate), but you can compile ML to offer all-I frames on the EOSM.
