Come on people, give the guy a brake! Let him finish his personal project, and then we can propose improvements or be critical in ergonomics and IQ. In any way, Luca invests his personal time and money, and it is truly admirable what he has achieved so far (something that even metabones didn't touch). I believe that AFTER the product is finished there are a lot of experimenting and testing to check the real possibilities and improvements of the adapter. I hope someone will take it from there and add electronics, even if it takes a while arduino board on a box somewhere!7 points

Samsung NX Speed Booster
SMGJohn and 4 others reacted to lucabutera for a topic
Thanks everyone for support. I would like to clarify that I have not started working on NXL adapter to make money. I decided to invest my time and my money for the love of NX1 camera. I am a ex user of the Canon 5D mkII, 5D mkIII, Black Magic C 4K, Sony a7s (waste camera, always crash with metabones smart adapter). The only thing I missed in this camera was the FF look that could not give me the aps-c sensor. I recommend this adapter videomakers, photographers who like to shoot in manual control, and have a large park full frame lenses and photographers who use the camera for artistic photos of portraits or landscapes. Responding to Pavel, the camera with NXL adapter, shoots at ISO 800 as ISO 1600 without NXL adapter, so even for the night is very indicated. Do not recommend to buy this adapter to those sports photographer because she would not have any benefit. Surely you will be better than me to find strengths and weaknesses of this adapter, and only you will know to use it according to your needs. It certainly is not perfect and certainly in the future, with your suggestions, I can improve it. Now I'm ready, I'm happy to announce that, I am preparing the website for a Kickstarter, where you can order the NXL adapter. P.S. Meanwhile I enjoy the Olympics on TV tonight!5 points -
A tiny sensor benefits from small lenses. That make 'em a compact and lightweight solution. Depth of field is also greater. This makes them an ideal match for aerial videography. And shooting aerial stuff, you'll probably won't even touch ISO6400 and the sorts. Being compact additionally makes them great to cram into tight spots. Furthermore, just for people who'd like to travel light and literally don't want their gear to weigh them down, you can travel around with your camera and a bunch of lenses and you'll hardly notice it's with you. Try that with a 5DmkIII and some lenses. Plus, the battery life on the GH4 is genius (and did we mention it doesn't overheat?). You might consider something else... actual cinema cameras are actually no real good in lowlight either. Prime example of course as well the Blackmagic range, that coincidentally sport cameras using the same MFT mount. You're basically using stuff at ISO800 and light for it. It's when you can't, or don't want to (maybe you're just lazy) light your scene, that you just pick-up something out of the A7-line up for example. Which comes as no surpise, as people have been doing that since the first A7s (which I also think people go for because they're secretly bokehwhores and fullframe makes it easier to creme the hell out of that background). You buy an A7SII or A7RII? Good for you. Now you're buying a multithousands costing set-up and having to feed it a 35mm image circle, those lenses are going to be huge compared to the M43 stuff. The entry into M43, even flagship models, is much more doable and lenses are compact and overall quite affordable. Plus, the flexibility to adapt a multitude of different lenses, including C-mount. Sure you can use an A7-series body in S35 mode. But where's the sense in that? APS-C wise... the A6300 has been mentioned tons of times, but need to get a grip on their reliability. I'll buy one as soon as they're as good to shoot with as they seem on paper. But I just can't be bothered with the hassle that's involved right now. Samsung NX1 is cool, but isn't exactly better in lowlight than the GH4. Canon has yet to come out with something attractive APS-C wise, what I'm concerned and Nikon has the cool D5300 and D5500, but then you're restricted to 1080p60 max and that flippin' mirror annoys the hell out of me. Also, you're missing out on all the treats associated with mirrorless cameras like focus peaking and the sorts. In the range currently the X-T2 is your best bet right now, if you can dig their system and philosophy. About not bringing out the GH5? People know the 4/3" limitations already, they've possibly been shooting one since the GH2 and have collected quite the range of glass for the system in meanwhile. Yet, with every new generation there's increased performance, but also improved ergonomics, better processing now for example would allow for these more or less experimental features like an anamorphic mode, to be used to its fullest with de-stretching and everything. I think the G7 and GX80/GX85 have significantly improved on noise levels and general quality video, yet, as we've established, there's nothing really as production friendly like the GH4, that has all the pro-level features. Not bringing out a GH5 yet, thát is what would drive people away, the frustation that a G7/GX85/80 is performing better, but isn't as much as a production tool like the GH4. Plus, it's all good and fun that they're collaborating on making organic sensors a thing. But I bet that's far from being ready for prime time. And with everything new, it will have child diseases that need to be worked out for the launch. Unlike Sony, they're actually trying to give you something you can rely on... M43 not your thing? You should've come up with that a long time ago. There's things it is and there's things it isn't (and won't be).5 points

Guys, no offense but could we get back to topic please which is the GX80? we have bmmc topics, we have the "5 reasons why i will get the gh5" topic by andrew reid, etc. it starts to get annoying that every thread here on the last couple of pages gets derailed into offtopic - which is a pitty, because the offtopic stuff is most often valuable enough to start dedicated posts (which i encourage you to create, so that others will participate!) yet i would like to receive email notifications about ontopic related stuff4 points

Agree. I am keen for any other info and still have to check this forum :-) - still have to think how it would work with my Canon 50mm 1.4 and 135mm f2. We should realize that NX1 will become almost fullframe (we still do not know exact crop factor but I think it is around x1.1) also in terms of noise levels - eg. what I know it will be like comparing 5DmkIII on ISO 1600 and NX1 on ISO 800 (there will be more light on sensor so you can use lower ISO with same aperture). So with fast lenses NX 1 should be on pair or better than FF cameras. Another example - is same situation where you now have to you ISO 1600 you should be fine with ISO 800 (same example for ISO 3200/1600, etc.). Quite important also for video when you can hardly use ISO 3200. https://***URL removed***/reviews/image-comparison/fullscreen?attr18=daylight&attr13_0=canon_eos5dmkiii&attr13_1=samsung_nx1&attr15_0=raw&attr15_1=raw&attr16_0=1600&attr16_1=800&normalization=full&widget=13&x=0.3153082706766917&y=0.48173803526448364 points -

We must live on different planets Dave - I've bought and returned $1000 used cameras from B&H after using them for maybe 75 clicks and felt extremely guilty about returning them. Not take a $5k camera on two international trips and then openly discuss returning it to Adorama on a popular website. Clearly doing paid work and then returning the gear used is a dick move IMO, but then to mention the details in a public forum is even worse. But what do I know.2 points

I owned the 1dc. The 108060 is softer than the 5d3's 1080p24/30. It looks like upscaled 720p to me. So you took the camera on two international trips and used it extensively and still returned it for a full refund?2 points

After some more real world tests i have changed from -5/-5/-5/-5 to -5/-5/0/-5. i like the sharpness more at 0 while having noise reduction still at -5 so that it adds more often this subtle panasonic grain while turning off filmconvert grain completely. currently i am playing with standard vs. natural with otherwise same settings as mentioned above. my current findings are that they look very similar on first sight, yet on second sight, the natural settings has more details in the shadows and less saturated reds. I still have to find out whether i like that and give natural a try for my next shot.2 points

It is quite a hefty price, but if I can use my vintage Soviet lenses on my NX1, yes baby, worth it for me. I have a bunch but I cannot use them because of the crop factor, they are quite soft when you crop. Originally bought for the Sony A7s which turned out to be utterly junk, only good thing about that camera was the sensitivity, no idea why anyone even likes it or gave it such a good review. If the smart adapter ever sees light, we can finally use cheaper lenses for NX1, I always wanted a really wide zoom one with 2.8 aperture, but there are none for the Samsung NX1, I have to buy 3 Lenses! Just to get those winder angles than 16mm, ridicules! Even GH4 has a super wide zoom. But thanks to Lucabutera, I can invest in more vintage lenses and even if my Samsung NX1 fails one day, I can just buy a much better camera if that hopefully exists in the foreseeable future and still use my lenses! Profit! Old lenses are really shit with crop factor because they are not as sharp and you always loose that delicious wider range they have, Soviet lenses have really funny distortions which also gets lost when you have a crop. But, thanks to Lucabutera, I can enjoy using them now, definitely picking this one up with my Norwegian OIL money.2 points -

After much work and many sleepless nights, I have almost finished my work and I think I have brought the lens NXL to the point of being sold to the public. I thought if the test this week will be positive to produce it with Canon EF mount dumb to which you can add a Nikon adapter with iris aperture control. At this stage it allows to mount all Nikon and Canon lenses, in the future I will continue to work to enable the electronic control of the lenses.1 point -
My Review of the Zhiyun Crane 3-Axis Gimbal
Flynn reacted to Mattias Burling for a topic
Ok, a review unit dropped in my mail today. But first let me say this: I know diddely squat about gimbals. I really don't pay any attention to them. In my work world a gimbal shot is like a drone shot or under water, in other words, something special that you use for a purpose and then you rent or borrow the gear + crew that are good at it. In my hobby and youtube world Im far to in love with proper camera shakes that I dont want to get rid of them. Of my +200 youtube clips 0 are done with a gimbal and maybe 2 clips in total have stabilization in post. Moving on. With that little disclaimer out of the way, I will know share my experience with this thing and be as honest as I can. And also do the best I can to give it an honest chance and learn how to use it. Even though I, at this time, dont feel any need to have one of these. Would be even more fun then if I turn out to really like using it. And YOU can contribute with questions that you want me to find out and that can be used in a review, since I dont really know what people want to know. First Impression It comes in a normal box, all the specs and such is written in english. So is the manual. Rather surprising is the nice and sturdy "pellicase" that all the stuff is well secured and foamed in. I have roll of T-Max in a stand develop so I might not be able to do more than look at it today. Also my BMPCC isn't here today and I think my GM1 is to light. The general feel is that its well made. It feels sturdy, all the joints are smooth, mostly metal and the plastic also feels nice. Here is some info: Weight without battery: 950g Payload Minimum: 350g Maximum: 1200g Battery run-time: 6-12h 360 degrees on Tilt, Roll and Pan. It can apparently feel every 0.02 degree change interval (what ever that is). Claim to be the first handheld gimbal with CCI (camera control interface) to control focus and shutter. Tool-less. Can be controlled via smartphone. First with three 32-bit MCUs running parallel at 4k hertz, "The number is far beyond reach of any other gimbal" (sounds pretty cool I guess, a bit nerdy but cool ) Lastly some other long paragraph about degrees ad milliseconds... sounds swell. Thats it, need to rinse my film. Will update as soon as I have it running and maybe a test shot.1 point -
Kowa Anamorphic-35 1.75x Inflight :)
Ian Edward Weir reacted to victorshoots for a topic
Hey everyone, I've been watching these forums for years and contemplating when to jump on a anamorphic solution. I think my "patience" might have paid off as I just acquired this beauty of a lens that is just a BEAST of glass. From the little I could find about it online it seems to be one of the highest quality optics around made for 35mm film projectors on airlines back in the day. Currently it is still on its way to me so i'm hoping it arrives without any damage. Once it gets here i'm thinking of getting a Core DNA from Rectilux to make it a viable single focus solution. Any core dna useres out there that can vouch for it's quality? Might need to do some machining though to get the Core DNA to fit from what i've been told. Anyone on here have one of these bad boys that can shed some light on working with this setup feel free to share would love to know more about this lens! Will post actual pics when it arrives! Was able to find one for sale on ebay currently but feel lucky I found another source hah...how rare are these really? http://www.ebay.com/itm/Kowa-Anamorphic-35-1-75x-Lens-/282114577816?hash=item41af56d598:g:y8YAAOSwIgNXmI1D1 point -

From Adorama: "We believe that in order to have the best possible online shopping experience, our customers should be 100% satisfied with their purchase. So, if you're not happy with your purchase for any reason, just go through our easy self-service return process." I wasn't 100% satisfied because within that 30 day window the price of the camera went down $3000. That's reason enough according to them to be able to return it. They ran tests on it and responded to me that everything was fine and they clearly saw my usage of it. They still issued the refund. I don't feel like this was a wrong thing at all. Nothing in their return policy does it say "if used on paid work returns aren't allowed". If anything I would think that that's the best way to decide if your "100% satisfied". To use it in paid work environments since that's the way you're gonna be using it if you decide to keep it. Hahahaha!1 point

Yes, but it's a hack: Canon is still selling 2009's video codec in their DSLR, just to be sure you buy the C line for filmmaking. My father has both 5D MKII and 5D MKIII for photos. I hacked them to try ML, but I would not use them for other then personal/repeatable gigs, since they are not reliable with ML loaded. Also: the menus and all the GUI of ML s not that great. Nothing to say about the quality, but until Canon will not decide to produce their cameras with that features it will be not really usable for paid gigs where time is a factor. I prefer to use my Lumix (GH4 and G7, GH4 never in V-Log, I made some tests also in ProRes 10 bit with video assist and I prefer to use them with Andy's "Natural" profile) and the little awesome BM Micro Cinema when I have more time between the shots. The Micro or the Pocket are way more reliable if you need RAW or Log. Of course, my opinion1 point

We're currently on vacation in Thailand and I got the A6300 to overheat for the first time. 29°C and cloudy, shot maybe 10 clips with 15-30 sec each in addition to ~ 50 pictures and it went into cool down warning. Was quite surprised as it wasn't that warm outside. I would agree that the camera is a bad choice if reliability is of any importance. I didn't install the latest firmware yet but it only mentions overheating during picture shooting so who knows if it'd even help.1 point

Hey Guys, First of all thanks a lot for making this happen. It really matters to know someone is still helping the beautiful community around NX1. Just wanted to ask, what were the in camera settings based on which the profile was done? profile, other setting, the more the merrier. Cheers1 point -
Yup! 'better processing now for example would allow for these more or less experimental features like an anamorphic mode, to be used to its fullest'. Same goes for V-Log. They didn't bring out the GH4 anticipating they were going to release V-Log for it. The platform wasn't ready for it, but they gave it a shot. Building a camera from the ground up knowing it should be able to handle V-Log, that must turn into a huge improvement. And indeed it would be nice to see V-Log and CineLike-profiles on the rest of the range. But I think it's a deliberate choice not to give it to the lower range, call it 'Canon segmentation' if you will... you want cinematic range features? You buy the cinematic range cameras.1 point
-
I guess the fact that Panasonic was out of Pro Video for a while (years), makes their Codes still something to be worked on. The VLog, IMHO, needs atleast more 2-3 iterations. I am saying this, because the Panasonic GH4 has 12.8 stops of Dynamic Range in RAW Photo at base ISO, while Cinelike D has 10.9 Stops, and the VLog has probably 11.5 stops. The Sony A7S, on the other hand, has about 14.2 Stops of Dynamic Range in RAW photo, and about 14.1 Stops in SLog2. Which outlines how badly the VLog needs to be worked on seriously. In my opinion, the next GH Camera (and All Panasonic Cameras, to be honest) need a Very Good VLog, that pulls in Atleast 12.5 Stops of Dynanic Range at the Maximum, and 11.5 Stops, in the Minimum. And VLog profiles should be on All Panasonic Cameras, regardless of the price. The GH5 can have the top-end version, and it can be a $199 paid firmware, if it makes Panasonic happy. But, all Panasonic Cameras should have VLog.1 point

The price is totally fair, IMO. As already said, though, I won't be buying a dumb speedbooster (or a dumb adapter, btw). What I'd really want, and I'd be ready to spend 300-350€ on it (if well built and decently fast), is a SMART ADAPTER (non speedbooster) for canon glass, so to be able to use a 300-400mm lens for my NX1 and use it with af, aperture and ois.1 point -
