Samsung NX Speed Booster
SMGJohn and 7 others reacted to lucabutera for a topic
Thanks everyone for support. I would like to clarify that I have not started working on NXL adapter to make money. I decided to invest my time and my money for the love of NX1 camera. I am a ex user of the Canon 5D mkII, 5D mkIII, Black Magic C 4K, Sony a7s (waste camera, always crash with metabones smart adapter). The only thing I missed in this camera was the FF look that could not give me the aps-c sensor. I recommend this adapter videomakers, photographers who like to shoot in manual control, and have a large park full frame lenses and photographers who use the camera for artistic photos of portraits or landscapes. Responding to Pavel, the camera with NXL adapter, shoots at ISO 800 as ISO 1600 without NXL adapter, so even for the night is very indicated. Do not recommend to buy this adapter to those sports photographer because she would not have any benefit. Surely you will be better than me to find strengths and weaknesses of this adapter, and only you will know to use it according to your needs. It certainly is not perfect and certainly in the future, with your suggestions, I can improve it. Now I'm ready, I'm happy to announce that, I am preparing the website for a Kickstarter, where you can order the NXL adapter. P.S. Meanwhile I enjoy the Olympics on TV tonight!8 points -

Looking forward to buy this baby so much, belive me I wanted this damn thing since I ever looked at the NX1 I almost did not even buy it because Metabones did not have any adapters for it but the specs pushed me. I honestly never seen a camera system receive so much community support as the NX1 imao. Those greedy peckers at Samsung ought to see how much people love their cameras and stop making their damn Galaxy S-infinitiv and make more Smart cameras, Samsung should have made an adapter themselves, I do not understand the reasoning not to, if they did more people would have bought the damn thing. Seems counter-productive to me to relay on third party manufacturers to do it for you5 points -

PayPal ___________ So this scam is stupid because the money doesn't go into her account. Also I typed the subject line into google, and 4 other people had the same email - via rolexes, etc. The poor scam artist could have at least modified a few words! The better scam I almost got hit on years ago is on a macbook pro I sold - he sent the paypal, and he gave an address. fedex noticed that address was an abandoned area of town, and the only reason I got the laptop back is that he was at lunch when he was supposed to be there to grab the computer. So they steal the computer, then they report to paypal they never got the computer and then , they have the computer for free. ___ The above guy was lazy. Anyway, in the internet age, there aren't burgulars anymore or pickpockets - there are online scammers. Imagine if someone came to your house and stole $1500 from your place. you would freak out. how is this different? I don't want to reference anything that went down on this forum, but this got me thinking because the person who did the fraud said he would refund money but he hasn't and he probably won't because he's involved in many, many camera scams. He probably has at least 10 going at all times. He probably also has some hook up in the USA and preys on people like my wife - with his knowledge of cameras too, he can be a pretty convincing buyer. Anyway, the internet sucks. People scam people on it a lot. Because there is no face to face communication. A person doesn't know what it feels like to get robbed of $1500 online because they never see that person. No one knows how it all feels. Anyway I really wish Andrew Reid would jump into this. i feel like we all have PTSD from the event. I know I probably encouraged some of it. But I still feel horrible especially now that I know that one of the scam victims still hasn't gotten his money back.3 points

I decided to signup and become a member just so i can personally combat this silliness. You're actually suggesting that he feel bad because he bought a camera, saw it go down by 3k, and decided to take advantage of a return policy that a huge company has in place in order to make the most money for themsevles? Do you think Adorama has that return policy because they're a bunch of sweethearts, or because it ultimately improves their bottom line and gets more people to impulse buy? Now that i've got that out of the way, i just bought the 1dc. Anyone have any thoughts on C-Log vs no C-Log shooting? To my eye, i think i agree with Abraham Joffe, that not using C-Log and just dialing down the contrast achieves the best look. Admittedly, i'm a novice shooter.3 points -
@sandro I created a small tool that shows a button with black background and white text at given position and size that enables one to have on screen "button" for REC or SHUTTER or whatever. You could use it as it is as a "black screen" (just set the text to " " and position to 0 0 and size to 720 480) and to start the time lapse. I do it often to preserve the battery (AMOLED uses almost nothing for black screen). To remove it from screen just press and hold it for 5+ seconds. I also made a separate tool for time lapse that can have black screen as well as black screen with small red frame counter (useful). It can also make short videos instead of photos (let's say 10s video every 2 minutes, etc).2 points

Thanks! honestly, i never use a ND filter ever and just bump up the shutter. i dont feel experienced enough to handle ND *and* MF at the same time - my subjects are not giving me the time I would need for such a proper composition. Yet that would also not represent the way I use my gear - since I see it more as a tool that should help me capture what i see within an instant - thats also the reason why i just set my GX80 to Aperture Priority with custom set WB and let the camera take care of the rest, with some exposure compensation sometimes of course. and yes, i only shoot 1080p/50. I love the 4k image, but I love slowmo even more than it. Still, i am amazed what kind of quality Panasonic manages to pack into just 27mbit..2 points

From Adorama: "We believe that in order to have the best possible online shopping experience, our customers should be 100% satisfied with their purchase. So, if you're not happy with your purchase for any reason, just go through our easy self-service return process." I wasn't 100% satisfied because within that 30 day window the price of the camera went down $3000. That's reason enough according to them to be able to return it. They ran tests on it and responded to me that everything was fine and they clearly saw my usage of it. They still issued the refund. I don't feel like this was a wrong thing at all. Nothing in their return policy does it say "if used on paid work returns aren't allowed". If anything I would think that that's the best way to decide if your "100% satisfied". To use it in paid work environments since that's the way you're gonna be using it if you decide to keep it. Hahahaha!2 points

Come on people, give the guy a brake! Let him finish his personal project, and then we can propose improvements or be critical in ergonomics and IQ. In any way, Luca invests his personal time and money, and it is truly admirable what he has achieved so far (something that even metabones didn't touch). I believe that AFTER the product is finished there are a lot of experimenting and testing to check the real possibilities and improvements of the adapter. I hope someone will take it from there and add electronics, even if it takes a while arduino board on a box somewhere!2 points

It looks like it since the price went up. I think someone over at bmcuser mentioned it isn't compatible with Wooden Camera's speedbooster foot, although Smallrig has their own support for Speedboosters. Not an issue for me yet since I'm using native lenses. I e-mailed WoodenCamera after seeing they revised their Micro cage and was offered a brief explanation for the change and a 15% for the new cage but declined. I intimated having seen their gear in person and was impressed with the build quality, to which their prices certainly reflect that; I get they're competing in a niche market and aren't selling them on the shelves at Walmart, however, based on the poor fit with their initial cage, I explained I don't think I'll be purchasing anymore WC gear in the foreseeable future. The quiet revision coupled with no means for the initial buyers of the first cage to purchase maybe an upgraded sideplate(Based on the pictures it looks like they removed one row of mounting holes to free up more space on the control side), left a poor impression in my mind. Thanks again to Zak and others who submitted ideas during the design phase.1 point

The one I had was a totally different rating. I'm seeing the same quality of 1dc going for $3999 now online on B&H and eBay. And yes. You are right. I came out on top with what a rental vs return would have been. But how is that wrong again? I am baffled that this argument is still going on? I followed all the rules of purchase and return. How does a rental fee have anything to do with it? I wasn't satisfied with my purchase. If the price drop didn't happen within my 30 day window I wouldn't have returned it.1 point

Just try to google it http://petapixel.com/2013/01/14/metabones-announces-revolutionary-adaptor-makes-ff-lenses-faster-and-wider/ It is similar to your EF to NX adapter but there is optical element that change crop factor from x1.5 to (I believe) x1.1, and you got more light to sensor and shallower depth of field. There is no electronics to control aperture now. Communication between lens and body is different story/project...1 point -

I think if you buy it again at the 5K price from Adorama then it's totally fine. I kinda see both sides of this. If everyone just bought a camera and returned it after a shoot, there'd be businesses closing, companies not innovating due to lack of resources, and no rental houses.1 point -
Actually...If I bought it new then it would be non refundable. Used doesn't state that its non refundable... For the record....I love to stick it to the man. But I haven't done that here. I followed every rule and did literally nothing wrong here. According to their own return policy, by me simply being dissatisfied (price drop) is all that is needed for a valid refund. That is all. I didn't loose $3000. More like $1,000 in the used market. Thats still pretty sucky! Hence my dissatisfaction.1 point

Maybe dumb and little off-topic note: It would be nice to have conversion (something like dumb extension tube) from NX mount to Sony E mount. That would make possible to use this Luca's Speedbooster someday also with Sony cameras and make it future proof. I think it would be also benefit for Luca: Maybe some Sony users would like idea of SB for mutliple mounts. I would not think about it if Samsung would not end to produce NX cameras... sadly my NX1 will not work forever :-(1 point -

Well let's see - had he bought a NEW one I certainly could see that - but he bought a used one for $5k a month ago. It's not a $3k hit by any stretch, and B&H (and Adorama) both show their used 1dc's as "unreturnable". Unless there are $2k used 1dc's out there, I highly doubt he took a 3k hit. But, clearly none of you work on the business sales side of things - what did Adorama do wrong here? They sold him a product; he used it for professionally and mentioned several times how much he loved it. We all make gambles buying used gear as far as price. Just because you can doesn't mean you should. But, we all have our own set of principles. Carry on... So it's ok because they're a huge company? You sound like a typical Democrat. To reiterate - they didn't see any usage because he only took video, which doesn't register on the shutter count. B. No $5k hit; he bought used. C. Adorama sold him a good working camera that he took out of the country twice and got paid to use for free. If this is fine by you to "stick it to the man" then that's fine. I just don't do things like this, big company or small.1 point

We must live on different planets Dave - I've bought and returned $1000 used cameras from B&H after using them for maybe 75 clicks and felt extremely guilty about returning them. Not take a $5k camera on two international trips and then openly discuss returning it to Adorama on a popular website. Clearly doing paid work and then returning the gear used is a dick move IMO, but then to mention the details in a public forum is even worse. But what do I know.1 point

Agree. I am keen for any other info and still have to check this forum :-) - still have to think how it would work with my Canon 50mm 1.4 and 135mm f2. We should realize that NX1 will become almost fullframe (we still do not know exact crop factor but I think it is around x1.1) also in terms of noise levels - eg. what I know it will be like comparing 5DmkIII on ISO 1600 and NX1 on ISO 800 (there will be more light on sensor so you can use lower ISO with same aperture). So with fast lenses NX 1 should be on pair or better than FF cameras. Another example - is same situation where you now have to you ISO 1600 you should be fine with ISO 800 (same example for ISO 3200/1600, etc.). Quite important also for video when you can hardly use ISO 3200. https://***URL removed***/reviews/image-comparison/fullscreen?attr18=daylight&attr13_0=canon_eos5dmkiii&attr13_1=samsung_nx1&attr15_0=raw&attr15_1=raw&attr16_0=1600&attr16_1=800&normalization=full&widget=13&x=0.3153082706766917&y=0.48173803526448361 point -
Petition for Samsung NX1 hack

Strange, I almost always shoot slightly underexposed at -2/3 of a stop and I never suffer clipped blacks unless contrast is extreme like shooting with the sun in the frame. If by converting to 16-235 you mean adjusting the output levels slider in "Fast Colour Correcter" then I find that this does not work, and it's about time Adobe fixed it so that it recognises the 0-255 correctly. I solved this issue by moving my editing to Davinci Resolve 12.5 the colour grading is much better IMHO and of course it's free, the only down side is that the free version does not support H.265 but it's worth it to me to convert the clips first to Pro-Res. In Premiere try this instead: Import your clip in to the timeline: add this effect (it MUST be this one) Video Effects: Color Correction: Brightness & Contrast : set contrast to -15 and brightness in the range of -3 to 0. This will bring it to near enough the same level as you would get if you were to capture a still from a movie in camera and then load that still into Premiere. Try the Premiere fix above and I'll be very surprised if you don't start seeing some shadow detail instead of clipped blacks. Cheers.1 point -
As a taxpayer, I think the government has bigger things to worry about than digital piracy, any policing of this is a waste of time and government resources and any lawmaker that spends a second worrying about it - at least here in the U.S. - is usually bought and paid for by entertainment industry lobbyists. The endless extension of copyright laws is a perfect example. Any proposal to create an organization to police a medium of free speech seems incredibly overreaching, Nazi and Communist comparisons are appropriate. And no matter what, it still wouldn't stop piracy.1 point

I don't want government having any type of power of anything someone can do on a website or software. They would be able to shut you down on anything (they) seem is illegal. They could shut down this site because gear is being sold and they're not getting taxes from it. I just know government shouldn't have to much power over anything plain and simple.1 point -
Maybe so. Yet... they did jeopardize the A6300's reliability. Even if you're doing some small production, there's going to be a time and patience/willingness constraint. If you're working with people at some point they're going to be sick of your 'ow, wait, there goes the camera again, great performance you guys, but we'll have to reshoot this'. And some moments are exactly that: 'moments', and you might not get a 2nd chance to relive it. That's why you probably can't have your camera fail on you all of a sudden, prompting warnings or just shut down. Add the rolling shutter and Sony colors you'll have to struggle with... even with the solid 4K and respectable lowlight performance, are you really so easy to forgive it? Are you going out of your way, by flipping out the screen, opening the battery compartment and even mounting a fan to make it work for you? Why would you do that to yourself? That borders masochism. Does the end justify the means? For me, I like to be in control. I like to shoot at my chosen focal length, focus distance, f-stop, shutterspeed, ISO and white balance. I certainly don't let the camera decide when to start and when to call it a day. When it's critical to get the shot, you gotta be able to trust your camera to handle it. If it can quit on you at any given time, that's just no bueno. But that's just my two cents. I wanted to love and get the A6300, but ultimately I just couldn't.1 point

One speed booster for all lenses! Are you happy?1 point -
The EF mount that can then also be adapted to Nikon is a wonderful idea, in my opinion the best of both worlds really (that way I don't have to switch out all my FF rokinon EF glass for Nikon!) So @lucabutera what's your current thinking on a production-run of these babies? Is some sort of crowd funding campaign necessary in order to scale up production and secure orders? Every camera (especially with the well under $5K range) has its own little set of niggles. Even the famous and expensive 1D C has ***HEAPS*** of niggles. Even an Arri Alexa has some niggles, that is why they brought out the Amira and then the Alexa Mini. But with an external battery pack (or a pocket full of batteries... I've got 13! So I can go with either option, just internal or external as well) you can go for ages and ages. I did this a couple of weekends ago inside at a Motorsport Expo, using the BMPCC as a quick and dirty run and gun camera on a monopod shooting to Rec709 ProRes LT (as there would be a lot of footage, none of which I'd be editing). This shows you can even happily use a BMPCC for one of its most unconventional uses: run and gun! If I was doing this outdoors I'd have added a monitor (I've got a Feelworld FW759 now, but hopefully I'll get a nice little 5" or smaller one to add to it instead). The total size and weight would still be smaller than what a naked 1D C would be! And more functional. (1D C monitoring features are shit) GoPros have been around for many years longer than a BMPCC, for a long time they were the ONLY option. That is why they were used. GoPros would still be used now for their low cost , their widespread availability, waterproofness, extreme small size, and ease of use. But for when image quality really matters, productions will always be now reaching for a BMPCC/BMMCC over a GoPro. In many many cases 4K is not **NEEDED***. 4K is not needed for nearly all of my work. As AaronChicago just mentioned only a few comments before yours, he is really only using his URSA Mini 4.6K as FHD ProRes HQ and not 4K as that is all that is required for his needs. So yes, would be lovely if the BMPCC had 4K! But it absolutely does not have to be a deal breaker requirement for many of us. As for 60p.... that is solved, we have the BMMCC if a person must have that. Needs an external recorder however... if BMD had included that inside the design then it would be a lot bigger and no longer Micro, plus the price would leap up. This is however something I'd like to see! Could likely be sub $3K? With a URSA Micro (even a bit smaller than URSA Mini! But please please add internal NDs) design with a 1" (or 4/3") sensor doing 4K that gets recorded internal. NAB 2017? To ship in 2018! Haha I dunno, they would sell a **SHITLOAD** of Canon Rebel series DSLRs (and 60D/70D DSLRs too, only one step up) to people who never buy anything more than the kit lens it came with. Maaaybe a 50mm f1.8 and/or a walk around superzoom as well. The people who buy L series glass from Canon are a tiny proportion of that. But yes, if you excluded Rebel DSLR buyers from these figures, then I could agree with you. 5Dmk4 and 5D C having two very different sensors? Doesn't seem like a Canon thing to do! This seems unlikely to me.1 point -
I have posted this the other day but its relevent here on this thread and some of you may have missed it so here it is again: I use Fresnels most of the time Arri originals and recently I bought a whole bunch of Chinese Arri copy fresnels off ebay for the feature film I just did , I needed to light 3 sets simultaniously and leave the lighting up for weeks at a time (I had 25 fresnels up at once on 3 sets) ,I like Fresnels as you can use them as a hard light or add some f1 Diffussion and use them as a soft light, you cant do that with Kino Flos they are soft all the time , so for me Fresnels are the way I light most of the time , the exception is lighting Women .. where a soft light is more beautiful , so sometimes if I need a very soft look , I use Kinos then or LED tube lights I have made - basically LED Kinos not tube Kinos , The Chinese Fresnels are just as good as the real Arri ones I was amazed , once you have a good globe/bulb in them like Osram - there is nothing in it , I bought 150s 300s 650s and 1K Pups and they are all superb , they worked 40 days for 12 hrs a day no issues . so check these out they are great http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Fresnel-Tungsten-Spotlight-150W-Lighting-Studio-camera-Video-/331687239451?hash=item4d3a199f1b:g:x8AAAOSw-zxWoXQS http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Pro-1000W-Movie-Fresnel-Tungsten-SpotLight-Studio-Camera-Video-/252322910892?hash=item3abf9e12ac:g:lP8AAOSwAuNW6hii http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/On-Sales-UK-Fresnel-Tungsten-Spotlight-300W-Lighting-Studio-camera-Video-/252134887278?hash=item3ab4690f6e:g:0k0AAOSwqYBWp0Dk http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Pro-Studio-650W-Tungsten-Spot-light-Dimmer-globe-Compatible-arri-bulb-/231722293457?hash=item35f3b998d1:g:0nUAAOSwKtlWp0A4 they are all amazing prices , I do recomend these lamps . 300w Fresnels in action on the movie Pandora with diffusion and gels on the front - standard stuff for me1 point
