good responses here i would say it totally depends on what youre doing... what are you producing? a doc? a kubrick-like feature? even though im a fine artist, im literally working on a 14 foot drawing right now, i came kicking and screaming to the crushing realization that to make my first feature the way i want, i have to storyboard every shot. that epiphany came some time ago, and im a lot more knowledgable now, so the very idea that i even though it was optional is laughable today, its ironic. but thats for me the SIMPLEST storyboards can be amazingly useful, a quick sketch that anyone can do can show lens choice, character movement, camera movement, etc. hell, look at this guy these suck and his films have worked out ok

  3. @jase since VNDs aren't actual NDs, but 2 polarizer you can get some funky effects now and then. Most VNDs continue to rotate past maximum where that dreaded X pattern occurs when you're in no man's land until you return back to minimum. This is why I only use VNDs that have the hard stops on either end.

    Canon XC10 4K camcorder

I've gotten that weird ghosting before, but I haven't noticed it since I've updated to the newest firmware, though I haven't been shooting a lot of 4k lately. I do notice weird black dots over the image that looks like dirt. I think it shows up at higher iso's but haven't spent the time to test it yet. Here are a few still frame c-log shots. These are all ungraded straight out of the camera, just exported via resolve.

  6. You where talking about processors, where are those facts? Roumered specs won't do, I want the facts you have. A7rii... No thanks, had both the a7sii and a6300. Had to return one and sell the other. Their codecs aren't up to standards in 2016. And that's just one of the many problems they have imo.

That is interesting that you have such good things to say. I think this sort of posting should be encouraged instead of the usual bitchy comments made on forums. If someone from Rode did get wind of this they would be quite chuffed and it would inspire them to continue their level of care.

  9. This discussion is an example of how complicated a simple thing. The speed booster increases the amount of image that is acquired by the sensor, consequently the sensor receive more light, increasing the brightness of the image of about a stop. Everything else is relative to the type of camera you use, make a technical discourse is useless, for each shot you have to set the elements in order to get the best. A light increase is positive and always helps, rather a worsening of light is always negative. In practice, if with your samsung nx you use a lens that has a maximum f1.4 aperture, you can use it at f2.0, getting the same light you had without the speed booster, but with better picture quality (in addition to other known benefits). Please if you want to continue this debate (already thoroughly discussed in the Internet), open another topic, please.

Narrative commercials are pretty much guaranteed to need storyboards. You have to plan out each second and make sure the angles/scenes are shot in the allotted time. I think they're really helpful in all of types of film other than documentary. If the director wants to take the time to do it then it's really beneficial.

When I first got into professional filmmaking I went on shoots with other professionals to learn how they worked. The shoots that were well planned, with detailed shot lists, storyboards, pre-rehearsals, table-reads, fully blocked and rehearsed, etc., always went much smoother and the crew were much happier, resulting in much better products than shoots that winged it or were otherwise not well prepared. My day job which funds my film projects is software engineering (I currently only shoot for our own internal projects, currently working full time to develop Cosmic Flow). The same patterns apply to creating software: planning, testing ('rehearsing'), iterating (re-rewriting the script/shots after rehearsing/table-reading/testing) is critical for a smooth production. When working with teams, sometimes folks don't want to do the 'hard/not-very-fun' work of planning, testing, and iterating. My last few projects didn't have as much planning as I would like and the results weren't as good as we need (even live interviews can use good planning). Since I have to operate the camera, handle sound and lighting, and do the editing, I take steps to make my life easier for the final edit. Our current shoots in production are much better planned and the results are also much better. There's an idea in software called the "lazy programmer". This actually means the opposite of what it says: the programmer spends a great deal of time and effort planning, designing, and iterating so that after the software is developed, their life will be much easier moving forward as it will be more reliable, easier to use, and easier to maintain. Thus the extra up front effort vastly reduces effort and headaches down the line (there is a balance- too much planning is counter-productive). The same pattern applies to any form of product creation, especially film.

  14. So, I had my first go with the GX85... awesome little camera... well worth what I paid for it. I have to adjust Saturation a little. On my monitor, the levels look fine, but when I watch it on one of my TVs, it is definitely over-saturated. I am going to try lowering my in camera saturation a tick or two. For this video, the in camera settings were... Contrast -5, Sharpness -5, Noise Reduction -5, Saturation -2. I'm going to try -3 and -5 next. I used FilmConvert for correction/grading. And the music is by Kevin McLeod.

  15. Not sure what gains a refresh will bring, the new 10bit screen calibrates beautifully and the thing is so damn fast, plus Late 2015 moved to Skylake. Apple seems to be moving toward USB 3.0, I prefer a slew of ports over a breakout box. Refurbs save about 15%, I bought used off Ebay and saved a little more, plus shipping was free and no tax - my machine was almost 30% off new price. Mine was only used for a couple months, so right now 33 months remain on the applecare warranty. Full spec on mine is 4.0ghz, 1tb SSD, 32gb ram, 395x video card with 4gb vram, it trounced my 6-core 3.5ghz with dual AMD500 video cards, 256gb SSD and 32gb ram. But the new iMac have the updated SSD's and I've read that larger SSD's are faster than the smaller ones. Its a powerhouse machine. My main gripe with the 2014's was the fan noise when pushed hard. That's the reason I went with the trashcan - its so quiet. I've only one the new one for a couple weeks, but I've yet to hear any noise from it at all. Side note, the built in speakers sound surprisingly good, lots of bass with the sound reflecting off the desk. My studio monitors and headphones sound better, but they should.

  16. I was waiting for the new iMac/s to be released & now i'm not so sure - might be cheaper to get a refurbished one? Thanks for those speed test results, really interesting. The whole FCPX hating was complete rubbish, as FCP7 was worlds ahead of PP & the only reason people stuck with it was because of AE - the rest was a shambles. Hats off to Adobe for running a great negative campaign against FCPX, but those of us who went with it & stayed got the updates, which were always coming, and that have made it one of the most logical, fast & bug free editing programs out there. The redesign of Motion was also a welcome surprise. Just hope they don't go the subscription route, but if they do i'd still pay them over Adobe - who really need to rebuild PP & fast, if they want to stay relevant!?

  18. They just don't push themselves to be that innovative, to have the best specs on the market... they just lower the bar rather than overreaching. So in the end, what they do set out to do, they do it pretty well and leave the user with a happy experience. That's also why people keep recommending newbies Canon and don't change systems. I kinda get that. Sony cameras aren't the most chill ones to work with. The Micro Four Thirds system might not have the performance and look you're after. With the APS-C options there's always something that feels missing/isn't quite there yet. I mean, a 5DmkIV wouldn't really work great for me, but if you're into fullframe stills and no fuzz video... are already rocking a bunch of Canon gear and like the seemingly hassle free process of getting results, then this probably makes sense.

  19. i would personally go with the canon eos one, you can mount nikon, contax c/y, olympus om, m42 ,pentax k and of course use canon eos with electronic connnections on the speedbooster.

  20. Apple quietly made a few upgrades to the Late 2015 iMac retina update, most notably the screen is now 10-bit and the SSD's are PCI-e 3.0 - which makes them ridiculously fast. I tested one side by side with my 6-core mac pro and the iMac smoked it. So I sold the trashcan and bought a loaded iMac, 1tb SSD, 32gb ram and the 395x card. How fast? Check this out.

  21. For this reason and the fact I also shoot with multiple bodies in use, I also have multiple focal reducers, that in the form of both the Metabones Nikon - M43 XL and the ZY Optics/Zhongyi/Mitakon Lens Turbo II EF - M43. From the earlier days the R.J. Lens Turbo Nikon - M43 and dedicated FD - M43 too, but in some problematic situations you might end up with light bouncing around causing some blue/magenta spots to appear in your image. And I did have problems (that got solved by excellent customer service) with the FD glass, where the construction didn't really allow for it to survive the shipment and the optic elements came loose and started to scratch up. So... for the ease of use and operation I've got the Metabones XL Nikon version. I don't really need the fancy electronic bits on the Canon adapter that drive up the price anyways, although it does allow a more flexbile mounting option, like you've mentioned. That's my reasoning for the 0.64x XL adapter in Nikon mount (aperture control as well). If you're fine with something around 0.71x, I think you could just pick up a ZY Optics/Zhongyi/Mitakon Lens Turbo. Probably the best value out there. Latest versions are actually pretty solid. R.J. Lens Turbo... he was one of the first to come out with a solid alternative, but lately I haven't seen anybody raving about it since new options have appeared. There's the Kipon BAVeyes which as mentioned before is a cooperation with IB/E Optics (BAV, Bavaria, Bayern, Germany, the guys behind Handevision). From a Japanese test report they seemed to be very soft in the corners and filled with purple fringing more so than the others. I'd say besides the rebranded/brandless cheap focal reducers on eBay and such, those would be the last to consider. One other option that's part of something different comes from Aputure. They now have that DEC Lensregain of course that looks to be interesting. I do sometimes just throw K&F (Kent & Faith) Concept adapters in front, like on the Canon mount a C/Y to EOS. Though for Minolta and Pentax for example I only have adapters to M43, so I couldn't really tell you. Best to go over at http://kentfaith.com/product-172.html perhaps and/or check eBay for such listings. They usually tell you if the adapter will do infinity focus or requires and is equipped with a corrective lens. I believe someone (Andy Lee?) once mentioned that if you look closely the Leica R Metabones can be had for a good deal and is a flexbile means of adapting other mounts. But I haven't done the math on that/am not sure about adapters. -- Ah, that table by Bror (below) made me 2nd guess this. That was ancient talk and actually the other way around; it was when we were still hoping for something flexible and he suggested butchering (for reduced flange distance) the Leica R mount to increase mounting options.

  22. I read somewhere that you can use a thin MD to ef (no glass) adapter to a focal reducer and it works. Never tried it myself though. I think M42 will mount to MD too. Again no first hand knowledge.

  26. For the MJPEG haters, which one you would pick (codec only)?: Canon 4k DCI 4:2:2 500 Mbits All-I 8 bit Canon XC10 XF-AVC 4k UHD 4:2:2 300 Mbits All-I 8 bit Sony A7 series XAVC S 4k UHD 4:2:0 100 Mbits 8 bit Panasonic GH4 4k UHD 4:2:0 100 Mbits LGOP 8 bit Nikon 4k UHD 4:2:0 144 Mbits 8 bit Today there is no DSLR with a perfect solution in term of codec. Best would be the XF-AVC but right now it needs a fan that is a no go on wheatear sealed body. As you can see they are all compromises and I personally would pick the MJPEG over the competition 4:2:0 formats and low bitrate any day. To the ones that say that Canon do not innovate, today the 1Dx II is the only DSLR form factor camera that can shoot in 4k DCI 60fps 4:2:2. Of course a 5Ds with a 4k full frame sensor with 4k DCI 60fps 4:2:2 500 Mbits XF-AVC with CLOG, Zebra, Peeking etc,. would be the dream but it will not happen. But there is no excuse for no LOG and no Zebra and Peeking.

  27. Please link to the facts you have. Im not a Canon fan. I don't own any Canon products. I only have Sony and Panasonic. But I say, specs don't mean jack. A 5 year old 5Dmkii produces way better looking images than any Panasony and with more features. Canon are still outselling Panasony with their 5 year old camera. At a very high price as well. But I guess all the people buing them are just "blind" or what ever... Jealousy comes to mind here... Your just mad because you failed

  33. Its pretty funny reading all the comments trashing a camera before a second of footage has been released. Judging by what we've seen with the 1dxII, if the image is similar it will be very, very good. If only Ebrahim were here to write a 5,000 word essay on Canon's colors. The 5d3 is over four years old and still a top seller, someone must be using it. 5d2's are even regularly used in broadcast productions. All this gnashing over specs is just measurbating. Dual pixel AF and Canon's native lens selection makes this a very interesting camera for me - and I'm pretty heavily invested in the A7rII and lots of Sony glass. Looking forward to samples and full details of the spec. Does anyone get better scoops than Digicame-Info? They seem to be the ones that all the rumor sites feed off, kudos to them for having insiders everywhere.

  34. Canon almost always have boring specs... They get slated by bloggers, the forums are rife with laughter and scorn. Then the footage comes out and people do a double take. You only need to look to the blog owner here, a self confessed tech/spec head, to see this... He has the 1DC, C500 and XC10. All were mocked and generally considered underwhelming yet the image draws people in. Canon are mugs if they don't put in c-log though... If it doesn't have c-log or ML... count me out.

  38. So far it's just rumors but still boring specs. Knowing the Canon trend to cripple its DSLR I'm not very optimistic. First it's only 4k30p, then the huge deal breaker of MJPEG with massive file size and need to transcode. It's like Canon can't ignore 4k anymore but wants us to feel the pain of using it. We can probably also forget about peaking and zebra. LOG i don't know but the 1DX doesn't have it. And is that going to be cropped ? What about aliasing and 4K quality, is that going to be like the usual Canon 1080 that looks like 720 ? Last we have DPAF, that's great but if the image sucks and the video features are non existent, the benefit is very small. Looks like I'm going to keep my current camera and wait for the next Sony or GH line.... Conclusion: after holding it for as long as possible, Canon is finally jumping in the 4K train but in the worst possible way with weird specs that are going to be severely outdated in a few month by the upcoming competition that will to give us 4K60 and 6K30 soon. In 3 or 4 years I can't even imagine how theses ridiculous specs will look like...

PayPal ___________ So this scam is stupid because the money doesn't go into her account. Also I typed the subject line into google, and 4 other people had the same email - via rolexes, etc. The poor scam artist could have at least modified a few words! The better scam I almost got hit on years ago is on a macbook pro I sold - he sent the paypal, and he gave an address. fedex noticed that address was an abandoned area of town, and the only reason I got the laptop back is that he was at lunch when he was supposed to be there to grab the computer. So they steal the computer, then they report to paypal they never got the computer and then , they have the computer for free. ___ The above guy was lazy. Anyway, in the internet age, there aren't burgulars anymore or pickpockets - there are online scammers. Imagine if someone came to your house and stole $1500 from your place. you would freak out. how is this different? I don't want to reference anything that went down on this forum, but this got me thinking because the person who did the fraud said he would refund money but he hasn't and he probably won't because he's involved in many, many camera scams. He probably has at least 10 going at all times. He probably also has some hook up in the USA and preys on people like my wife - with his knowledge of cameras too, he can be a pretty convincing buyer. Anyway, the internet sucks. People scam people on it a lot. Because there is no face to face communication. A person doesn't know what it feels like to get robbed of $1500 online because they never see that person. No one knows how it all feels. Anyway I really wish Andrew Reid would jump into this. i feel like we all have PTSD from the event. I know I probably encouraged some of it. But I still feel horrible especially now that I know that one of the scam victims still hasn't gotten his money back.

It being a big company has all sorts of bearing on it because you're not screwing anyone over, and therefore shouldn't feel bad about it. Do you not understand that this situation is highly unusual, and unworthy of your puritanical rants on what you think is right? A camera had a GIANT price reduction during his 30 day grace period - that a big company benefits from. Adorama, or any other big company, MAKES MONEY on their 30 return policy via customer satisfaction and impulse buying. The situations like Dave's are rare, but this is a situation where the customer gets the benefit of that policy. This has no bearing on the separate issue of people buying cameras only to use them and return them, that's a totally different situation where there is an INTENT to take advantage, there was no intent here. It's a 30 day CUSTOMER SATISFACTION POLICY. Dave wasn't satisfied with it's value within 30 days, it doesn't matter why.

JB One thing that's not well know is that there IS a difference in the construction of the IS between the various bodies (some are magentic and fully float) The EM5II is the most advanced of all the current bodies :-) JB

The one I had was a totally different rating. I'm seeing the same quality of 1dc going for $3999 now online on B&H and eBay. And yes. You are right. I came out on top with what a rental vs return would have been. But how is that wrong again? I am baffled that this argument is still going on? I followed all the rules of purchase and return. How does a rental fee have anything to do with it? I wasn't satisfied with my purchase. If the price drop didn't happen within my 30 day window I wouldn't have returned it.

Film companies dont relase any hi res stuff until after the film is released , So look at the lighting grade composition low light levels etc etc but remember these are lo res saved for web pictures you are seeing not UHD 4K uncompressed frame grabs. there is no micoblocking on the actual footage I shot . I shot most of the movie at 800 iso f2.5 I lit the sets for that stop and ISO , I did shoot some scenes at 640 and 400 maybe 20% of the movie but most was at 800 iso the G7 is very clean and usable at 800iso PS the entire film is shot at night there are no daylight scenes in the movie
