No, it's because they're invested up to the eyeballs in Canon glass. Okay, fair enough. but just don't lie, man. Don't tell me its a competitive offering when it comes to video features. Don't try and tell me or anyone here that we don't need log and peaking at a $3500 price. Don't tell me the MJPEG codec is innovative. And certainly, don't tell me that crop is "welcomed" on piece of kit at this price point.3 points

The more i think about these specs the less excited I am.. 1.7x crop would be pretty bad, especially at 3800 euros.. having to transcode a 500mbps outdated codec also sounds like a PITA... no log or focus assist.. no 4K output.. pixel-binned 1080p.. really DPAF is the only good news here. I'll reserve my judgement until final specs are released but it ain't looking pretty..3 points

Storyboard/Previz
Liam and 2 others reacted to Oliver Daniel for a topic
With anything, the need to storyboard or previz depends on time and budget. A lot of the projects I do are in music, and 98% of the time, there's not enough budget to do it. So the way me and my team do it is to create mood boards (via something like Pinterest) for the scenes like for location, lighting camera movement, expressions, poses, master shots etc. Everyone can sort of visualise the tone and style we are going for. The commercial world is also spiralling in terms of budget. I was luck enough to win a tender for a national campaign, and although the budget was decent, we only really had time to draw up two frames from each scene, and juiced them up with mood boards. My style of filmmaking is generally more spontaneous, on-the-spot, "what looks best at the time" kinda thing. There's always a shot list, schedule and mood board - however there's always a lot of room to try something out and see where it goes. That happens a lot. Even on the most structured shoots. Mood boards can be difficult though when you have an idea in mind, and you can't quite find the right visual references to match your vision. if anyone else does mood boards, I'd love to hear your strategies in finding the correct visual material efficiently.3 points -

I think the point really is this... It is what it is. These are the specs Canon has decided on. Now it's up to us to decide if we want to buy one, or go a different route. You gotta love the free market. I, personally, would take this over an equivalently priced Sony any day of the week. The codec may be outdated but it's stable, has beautiful motion cadence, and requires less processing power. Sure you need more storage, but storage is cheap nowadays, so no biggie. I own a Canon XC10 and a Panasonic GX85. I love them both for different reasons and they both have a place in my tool box.2 points

Here at EOSHD forums we are a highly-specialized, niche segment of the market. We speak and critique from that perspective. I really don't care what the weekend warriors, vloggers, Japanese tourists and moonlighting wedding photographers do with their resources and purchasing decisions. I'm sure Canon will sell well. That's not what we're discussing. The question to debate is whether the 5Dmiv is a competent tool for this community and whether it delivers the performance and value that we would expect from a $3200-3800 body. Canon is free to turn up their noses at any segment they wish - yes, they will still sell to the hordes - but we are free to critique their merchandise and when we feel it's not up to par in the marketplace, free to state so. Just because they sell tons of cameras doesn't necessarily mean their cameras are adequate tools for sophisticated hybrid shooters. This is the perspective I'm critiquing them from. Sony is releasing products geared to what you call a "tiny tiny tiny minority" - now why do you think such a big company is focusing on such a "tiny" segment? I guess Sony is jsut stupid, right?2 points -
Luca can you show a bit more pictures of the actual product itself? We understand that they will probably not represent the final finish quallity of the product, but as a tech I enjoi the machining aspects and looks.2 points

I'm shooting a documentary wherein I'm trying to capture around 80% of the footage with a FD 1.2 55mm on a speedbooster. I think it looks great in an imperfect way. Typically I'm getting most of my shots @f2.8, which is pretty darn sharp with that lens. But, I've done some low light stuff where I open it to f2 or f1.4-ish, and the chroma aberration really starts to be noticeable. Which isn't all bad, depending. It's a "look" anyway. It's certainly nice being able to shoot low-light if needed. f1.2 on a speedbooster with 1600ISO captures a lot of light. I've even pushed to 3200ISO with useable results...depending on what you consider "useable." Here's the thing some people fail to take into consideration when it comes to IBIS bodies and m43 cameras: The cameras are very light. The lack of mass makes them prone to hand held jitters. But, once you adapt some hunking piece of glass and metal to the body, then the weight of the camera actually becomes beneficial for steadier handheld shots. My take is that the ergos are actually better for shooting video when old vintage glass is on the body.1 point

The a6300 doesn't overheat in 1080, has similar readouts to the 5d3 at 1080, has axis display, has built in EVF, has focus magnification and peaking without custom firmware, has very usable autofocus, has slow motion up to 120fps, has a log profile and does have a nice colour rendition. The a6300 is objectively good for run & gun, and really has a lot of advantages over the 5D3 for other stuff too.1 point

I think the best hope for Canon stills cameras to have the video features that everyone wants will be with their mirrorless line. Think about it, their consumer eos-m3 has focus peaking, but their flag ship full frame model does not... that has to tell you something. Canon's DSLR market is primarily for stills. With the rumored, but practically confirmed, release of a Canon FF mirrorless coming out in late Fall, I believe a lot of these desired features will be included in that camera.1 point -

lol quite obviously. we are talking top bill FF DSLR versus a consumer pocket camera without even a viewfinder. I'd never consider a A6300 over my 5D3 or even a 6D. Too many compromises on usage but fact remains that sony gives access to full readout APS-C 4K, zebra/peaking & S-Log3 for $1K. Add a speedbooster and it's FF 4K! And of course native FF 4K with clean 4K HDMI output, EVF, SLOG, IBIS etc.. for $3K on the A7S2. Sony offers all this, even though they also have a pricey FS cinema cam line. So my point is simply that Canon could include a few of these goodies on their 3.800 euro flagship 5D4. But no dice. Also, sorry for beating a dead horse here but 1.7x crop is just a real bummer. I buy a Full Frame for a Full Frame look/experience. It becomes even more important with 4K where you'd like the possibility of a jump-in crop in full HD timeline. Well now on the 5D4, my 35mm 1.4 L becomes a 60mm native in 4K.. and my widest 24mm L becomes a 40mm.. that just makes me cringe..1 point -

with anamorphic adapters you want to have taking lens front element not to be too large, the shorter distance from the rear element of adapter to the front glass of the lens the better for the image, I believe Nikkor 50mm f1.8 has 52mm front thread, it is a great, cheap pancake lens and i would recommend it to have if you plan to use anamorphic adapters1 point -
Yeah, the personal side of me gets a little annoyed that they don't include all of the above, but the business side of me doesn't blame them. It's market segmentation. The real issue is that Canon has way too many camera models and too many benchmarks for each line. But if you look at their models and the features they include in each respective camera, their company strategy is pretty evident. And it seems to be working for them... But honestly, how exactly is it poor customer service? If you are a customer who purchased a camera based on the specs presented at the time of purchase, how can you complain it doesn't have more than offered? And you have to be a customer to receive service. Three quarters of the people who complain about Canon on these forums are trolls and not actual customers.1 point

What about Sony not putting a touchscreen on the A7rII or a6300? Or only offering 8-bit 4:2:0 internal? Or not using UHS-II? Or not allowing users to assign a custom button for FF/APS-c mode or formatting a card? Or not resetting all video file numbers to 0000 with a card swap, so if you use three cards you have three files numbered 0001, 0002 and so on? I have a number of other gripes about my A7rII, but that's for another thread. Many Sony complaints fall into your line of code bitch slap logic, they fix bugs (sometimes), but I'd hardly call them responsive to customers demands. The grass isn't always greener.1 point

Rudy Giuliani, former respected mayor of New York, says he knows Trump well and he'll be a positive for the people. 16500 border patrol agents endorse Trump. President Obama and Hillary are not the founders of Isis, read about this terrorist group....and the conclusion is ISIS is there because George Bush lying to the American people decided to remove Saddam Husein from power, and guess what? bush is A REPUBLICAN, THE SAME AS TRUMP. once again trump saying lies all over the place. Here's a differing view as to your Isis statement......http://www.blackagendareport.com/obama_clinton_created_isis it is funny that trump talk too much about veterans when he is a draft dodger...that means he was called to serve in Vietnam, but his father paid a doctor to get a medical diagnostic saying trump has foot problems and other things and avoid the war, ....so how come his health is 100% (according to him) now when he is 70 years old, and when he was 20 his health was very bad...sure. Yes Trump wants to support Veterans better than the support they receive - good idea? Boxing great Ali was against the Vietnam war and avoided. Maybe the war should have not been fought? Interesting Bill Clinton didn't end up in the war either. http://www.nytimes.com/2016/08/02/us/politics/donald-trump-draft-record.html?_r=0 can you believe someone talking about A TAX PLAN....WHEN HE DOES NOT WANT TO SHOW HIS TAX RETURN? TRUMP IS A DEMAGOGUE he promise he alone will fix all the problems....can you believe it?...but until today he has SHOWED NO PLANS OR HOW HE WILL ACCOMPLISH ANYTHING All politicians make promises. Promises need to be followed through. Will be interesting. He is complaining American companies sent jobs abroad....why he didn't move jobs from his owns companies from china to EEUU as an example to other companies? To be competitive that is the reality due to the current situation? A lot of Americans out of work due to businesses having left the country in the past decade. can you trust someone who attack a golden mother? trump did it, he is the worst candidate ever, check all the lies he said in this interview...it is funny and sad that so many people believe him It is very sad the son died. Interesting and surprising article on the father. http://www.rense.com/general96/khanshar.htm I'm only presenting a differing point of view. Nothing more and nothing less. Doesn't change the fact that it's poor customer service. You're right, people should expect Canon to not pander to their lobbying. Live with Canon's shoddy response or shift loyalties to another company. Canon's ecosystem is keeping customers around but the more they continue to underwhelm and the more that competing companies innovate and address peoples needs, it's inevitable they're going to see some attrition over time. But let's admit it, to not add a line of code to provide peaking and zebras is just a bitch-slap to the face.1 point

You have obviously never used these cameras. When in capable hands they can be more than just capable tools. GH4 is far more operator-friendly than a 5Dmiii. a6300 works well when used in the right way. Overheats, yes, but the results are stunning. In all seriousness, do you work for Canon? The specs are underwhelming, the codec is a prehistoric albatross and the crop is certainly not welcomed.1 point

Ian Edward Weir reacted to Hans Punk for a topic
Tito's calculator is a handy tool to work things out. http://www.tferradans.com/blog/?p=8615 Where there is less info on vignette with a 1.75x lens, treat it as 1.5x stretch, but allow a little wiggle room in the numbers (round up a little to be safe). I'm my experience, 1.75x lenses can often be regarded as a 1.5x stretch, as most medium/close focus distance scenarios (non infinity) will always yield less of the stretch ratio from the lens...as all Anamorphic stretch ratios are measured at the infinity point. Definitive answers on taking lens vignette or performance can depend on many things...often the way to find a good pairing is to test out for yourself. Also a taking lens' coverage may be slightly flexible if you are able to shoot 4:3 or 3:2 aspect in camera...or if you plan to shoot 16:9 aspect and post crop.1 point -

Adapterrings of different brands with the same mount defiate enough to make mounting of one brand of a lens on one and the same speedbooster a frustrating experience. Let alone mount different brands of lenses with their repsective adapterrings one and the same speedbooster. In my experiene you should not use one speedbooster for severall mounts. I tried for my C/Y lenseses, Yashinon 45-135 and nikkors with a ef-mft speedbooster. In the end none of the lenses would reach infinity or stay parfocal. Once I found out the Yashinon is "parfocal" with a slight modified speedbooster, I kept the glass in the speedbooster fixed in that position. I then adjusted the C/Y lenses so they would reach infinity ...which is a relative easy job with C/Y lenses. I'am pretty sure that if I mount those adjusted C/Y lenses on a dedicated C/Y speedbooster they would be way off. For my nikkon glass I bought a n/g-m4/3 speedbooster. Nothing a rough wetstone or iron vilings can't get rid off. I think I removed around 5mm from the metal tongue (aluminum) of my 20-35mm nikkor and it mounted just fine with adapter ring on the ef speedbooster.1 point

Not sure what gains a refresh will bring, the new 10bit screen calibrates beautifully and the thing is so damn fast, plus Late 2015 moved to Skylake. Apple seems to be moving toward USB 3.0, I prefer a slew of ports over a breakout box. Refurbs save about 15%, I bought used off Ebay and saved a little more, plus shipping was free and no tax - my machine was almost 30% off new price. Mine was only used for a couple months, so right now 33 months remain on the applecare warranty. Full spec on mine is 4.0ghz, 1tb SSD, 32gb ram, 395x video card with 4gb vram, it trounced my 6-core 3.5ghz with dual AMD500 video cards, 256gb SSD and 32gb ram. But the new iMac have the updated SSD's and I've read that larger SSD's are faster than the smaller ones. Its a powerhouse machine. My main gripe with the 2014's was the fan noise when pushed hard. That's the reason I went with the trashcan - its so quiet. I've only one the new one for a couple weeks, but I've yet to hear any noise from it at all. Side note, the built in speakers sound surprisingly good, lots of bass with the sound reflecting off the desk. My studio monitors and headphones sound better, but they should.1 point -

He took approximately $250 each from Timotheus and Tomas, and $340 from myself for the item. Long story short, he got away without paying anyone their money back. He eventually sent the rangefinder to Tim and Tom, which turned out to be a test type (that had unusual thread sizes" that wouldn't work on most DSLR's as the original does. We got scammed. Just a friendly reminder that even "trusted" members can still be criminals trying to rip you off. Apple quietly made a few upgrades to the Late 2015 iMac retina update, most notably the screen is now 10-bit and the SSD's are PCI-e 3.0 - which makes them ridiculously fast. I haven't been let down at all, don't know what the hell your warped analogy is supposed to mean. Canon had the first 4k DSLR, they have the best video/live view AF, and they now have the first 4k/60p DSLR. Plus they have the best Native lens lineup and shooting ergonomics nailed, something Sony really needs to revise with future a7 bodies. If you're looking for a hybrid body, the 5d4 spec looks really good. As always I'll reserve judgment until actual samples are available. I guess if people on this board keep saying Canon doesn't innovate and the image sucks, one day it might actually be true.1 point

For the MJPEG haters, which one you would pick (codec only)?: Canon 4k DCI 4:2:2 500 Mbits All-I 8 bit Canon XC10 XF-AVC 4k UHD 4:2:2 300 Mbits All-I 8 bit Sony A7 series XAVC S 4k UHD 4:2:0 100 Mbits 8 bit Panasonic GH4 4k UHD 4:2:0 100 Mbits LGOP 8 bit Nikon 4k UHD 4:2:0 144 Mbits 8 bit Today there is no DSLR with a perfect solution in term of codec. Best would be the XF-AVC but right now it needs a fan that is a no go on wheatear sealed body. As you can see they are all compromises and I personally would pick the MJPEG over the competition 4:2:0 formats and low bitrate any day. To the ones that say that Canon do not innovate, today the 1Dx II is the only DSLR form factor camera that can shoot in 4k DCI 60fps 4:2:2. Of course a 5Ds with a 4k full frame sensor with 4k DCI 60fps 4:2:2 500 Mbits XF-AVC with CLOG, Zebra, Peeking etc,. would be the dream but it will not happen. But there is no excuse for no LOG and no Zebra and Peeking.1 point

I dont give a crap about specs. I care about how it preforms. Just look at the Sony A7sii, a6300 and GH4. Great specs but suck ass compared to a 5Dmkiii. A Red Scarlet, Sony FS5 or FS7 all have great specs but cant touch the image from a D16, R1MX or what have you. IMO of course. Another image that I think kills the GH4, Sony Ax etc is the 8-Bit 4:2:2 from the XC10. So if the 5Dmkiv has the same codec but on a large sensor... winner. Side Note: Don't you just love how some when asked to show examples of how good a camera is send you a chart or a number instead of an actual image... Got to love the internet.1 point -
Since when did 4k60p become a must have on a DSLR!? This spec chasing will just go on and on and on. Is that the same Canon that ALREADY have a 4K60p camera (1DX-II)? I do kinda get his point though. There's always people that are going to complain that equipment is too expensive for them. Ok, we get it. He can't buy the 16-50mm f/2-2.8 S lens and 400 USD is a stretch too. What I don't understand is... if that's not your ballpark... then don't look at it and complain about it. That's unproductive. And what I also get is that stuff just costs money, from a designing and engineering perspective. If you want something that's brand new and any good, there's probably some money involved to make it. That's just how it works. Complaining about something that's already fairly priced might be regarded disrespectful to the ones making 'em, although I wouldn't really go as far as saying it's disrespectful to the art in any way, except from the fact that everybody is dealing with the fact something is a certain price and they either sacrifice somethings to get the funds or just forget about it already. I love cars, especially the fast and exotic ones. Yet you won't see me complain that a McLaren is too expensive. Or even the Audi RS5. If it's not in my ballpark, I'll just have to look at other stuff that gets me from A to B. Can't afford a car, like... any car? Look at public transport! Can't do that either? Take a bike or go on foot! I mean... you want a cheap f/1.4? Get a 25mm APS-C covering C-mount lens from AliExpress/eBay or something already. Or a nice vintage piece of quality glass. Sure I agree. Budget forces perspective, a new way of thinking and resourcefulness. But you've got to explore that. You can't just sit around moping. Be creative with what you've got on focus your energy on the right things. That's all.1 point

There's a point where the image is good enough, and at that point other factors come into play, such as 60p and DPAF. Like many have said there's no point in slightly more DR if you missed the shot. To each their own. But I much prefer the ability to easily nail focus to a negligible difference in picture quality at the extremes. Out of focus shots are immediately apparent, and effect the ability to tell your story. Slow motion 4k is a powerful story enhancing tool. A slight increase in detail in the shadows is not going to impact the story to any great extent. It's really that simple.1 point
