  1. I have the NX1, mainly I shoot weddings, corporate stuff, and small commercials. The Sigma 18-35 lives on my camera, absolutely stellar lens. When I need wider, the Rokinon 12mm f/2 is very small, very light, and very sharp. Mid range, I'm in love with the Zeiss/Contax 50mm f1.7, which has a certain je ne sais quoi that renders things so, so beautifully. Long end, the Rokinon 85mm T1.5 gives that jaw-dropping, ultra-shallow look, awesome for narrative stuff too. As far as vintage lenses go, I'm not sure why some posters above have said the NX1 has a "problem" with them. 95% of the time I use the lenses mentioned above, but once I get my hands on one of those new dream-come-true NX-L speedboosters Lucubutera has been cooking up, I'll be using my full frame vintage glass much more. I own the Nikkor 28mm f2.8 AIS, gorgeous, extremely sharp lens. Minolta Rokkor 40mm f2 looks great, Zeiss Jena 35mm f/2.4 is on point, Canon FD 50mm 1.4 looks great, Tokina 24-70 f/2.6-2.8 has a very distinct, vintage glow to it with the NX sensor... let's see, what else... Ah yes, the above-mentioned Helios-44 is awesome, 58mm is kind of interesting focal length to play around with, and that signature swirly bokeh is super cool. I can go all day, I've got way too many lenses, I'm afraid it's a bit of an addiction at this point. But the take-away is, there is an absolute wealth of great, affordable glass to be had for the NX1 (or any mirrorless camera for that matter) that can fit a wide variety of looks you might be after, whether it be the ultra-contrasty/ultra-sharp modern look, low-con vintage haze and dreaminess, vintage swirly bokeh... There's not really any "right or wrong" answers, it just comes down to the look you're after, and how much you're willing to spend to get it.

  2. Wrong, technically ef-s lenses are only made by canon, they have a longer plastic bit at the end. Third party lenses like the Sigma's mentioned above will go on any full frame EF camera just fine , even if they're only designed to cover aps-c, they still feature the regular EF lens mount.

    Canon XC15

Well looking at the differences between the XA30 and XA35, which are part of the XC10's camcorder group, I wouldn't be surprised if the XC15 only adds HD/SDI output for news broadcasters and maybe some type of XLR input or add-on pack. You would think if it was a new lens, dual pixel focus (which would imply a new sensor?) then it would be an XC20 based on the XA ranges naming history.

  5. I also have GH4 and compared to 7D raw I notice a big difference in motion as well. I'm not sure exactly what it is, but all I can say is it looks kind of fake and electronic (if that makes any sense), like using a super high frame and shutter rate and then playing at 100% speed.

Dual-pixel focus would be the only thing (at the moment, anyway) that that would make me consider an upgrade.

  7. I'm not sure what you're saying here. Do you believe Super 35 is similar to what is commonly referred to as Full Frame- like a 5D? The sensor in a Super 35 camera like the Arri Alexa, at least as I understand it, is almost identical to APS-C in terms of field of view. I simply mentioned those focal lengths because I figured you and other folks would find it interesting, the focal lengths that other DPs tend to find most useful.

  8. @Flynn Jeez I have to agree with you. Just impartially reading this thread ...and FilmMan...sounds like he has a bit of humor about things, but Damphouse and TigerBengal are more or less rolling out the insults and sound hateful and a bit unhinged ...capsLock paragraphs etc...calling Trump "Führer" etc...All right for some tho I guess. Funny thing that Hillary just stated that she will destroy any conservative website that puts forward views that she doesn't approve of.. Her direct quote "They dont have a right to exist" does that make her a "Facist" I wonder? I guess not (according to some)... But if Trump had said it...it would be "HILTLER", "NAZI", Führer, Clown ETC... makes you wonder. Cheers

NX 500 as a cinema camera

A lot of the best nx1 shooters here like raised blacks, which can look great, but isn't for everyone. Could be the sharpening you're seeing that you don't like. This guy's most recent four videos (maybe more) were shot on the nx1, and I love the skintones and colors he achieves - https://vimeo.com/timmyturntable Probably have to do your own experimenting with LUTs, camera settings, and grading workflow. Maybe vintage lenses or a pro mist filter could help you

  11. When I shot that video portrait of the leather artisan I had an H1 on a small tripod a few feet away from my subject. It still recorded the background air conditioner noise but not as much. A lavalier would have been better. I find the in camera microphone is acceptable for ambient sound or if the subject is close by in a quiet room. So for home video like birthday party in my house it was quite adequate. Outside or if the subject is far away an external recording system is obviously better. I have try attaching the H1 to the hot shoe directly but I pick up a lot of handling noise of the camera. I am planning to buy a RODE videomicro, which has a shock mount , to attach to the hotshoe and feed that to the H1.

  12. I think the mythical "motion cadence", separated from rolling shutter, is down to how different codecs and cameras compress motion and how that affects motion blur. Pretty much without exception people pick RAW cameras as ones that have best motion cadence - because there's no compression or artifacting affecting the motion. Then after that come the cameras that do Prores or other flavours of high bitrate codecs, and dead last are the ones that compress the image to ludicrous degrees with interframe codecs such as Sony cameras or GH4. The best motion comes from a camera with a fast sensor readout and high bitrate compression or RAW. Imho that's all the magic there is to it.

  17. No. I'm talking about the away motion is rendered. I'm not talking about RS, but about a very subtle jitter. It occurs also when panning or when fast objects pass across the frame. But I'm not talking about RS. it's more like there would be a drop frame, but less evident.

    Sony A7SII colors suck!!!

Have you understand what is SLOG, and for what is it used for? If not, than you should not shoot in to log profile because you'll have problems like now. Here's some walkthrough what is slog: http://www.xdcam-user.com/2011/01/understanding-gamma-cinegamma-hypergamma-and-s-log/ http://www.newsshooter.com/2011/09/22/sonys-s-log-for-dummies-matt-allard-explains-how-it-works-with-his-pmw-f3/

    Sony A7SII colors suck!!!

If you expose slog2 incorrectly you will have major problems trying to grade it. It requires a specific technique, different to what you may be used to using a more conventional profile, especially if you are unable to preview using a LUT while shooting.

How come that the rest of us get nice colours with Sony ? Else you can try some of the other picture profiles first and see how that works for you.

  22. Maybe it's subjective. I used a gh4 and a gx80/85 and the motion feels different to me there is some kind of a subtle jitter at 24 and 25 fps. Never tried at 30fps. But the way it renders motions is different and in my opinion not so good.
    1 point
  23. Agreed. Panasonic not bad motion though. What the hell? It is 24 or 25 frames per second anyway! That's mere subjective BS.

DPAF and the pimpy touch focus pulls along with 5-axis. A faster lens with less reach would be welcome - something like a 24-105 f/1.8-2.8, or even something a wider like the Nikon DL's 18-50. XC15 instead of XC10mkII makes me think its a second XC camera to sell alongside the XC10, not a replacement.

  25. Codec's are like wine. MJPEG 8-bit 422 it's old and heavy. But it gives good motion and color. In my opinion, and solely based on the few cameras I used, Sony has bad colours and Panasonic has bad motion. I don't mind it being heavy and old if it delivers.

  26. Yeah, moire is still a problem unfortunately. Not nearly as bad as the pocket or BMCC. I'm hoping that Mosaic Engineering will release an OLPF for the 4.6K.

  27. As @Geoff CB asked... What camera are you using? I understand it's an aps-c sensor, but the specific camera, or camera line could mean the world of difference as to which lenses will work with your camera. There are already some great suggestions, so I will add Pentax-M lenses, very inexpensive with some of the best mechanics around. The focus rings on Pentax lenses are just a dream. With that I'll also suggest Pentax's older lenses the Super Takumar. They also have that Pentax, buttery smooth focus ring. The 35mm f2 is a gorgeous lens but I believe that one is radioactive. If you would accept slower, and cheaper, the 35mm f3.5 is a stunning lens. Most people would rather have that slower lens because the IQ is just simply gorgeous. Then for your 50, there's the 1.4 (radioactive) or jump up to a 55mm and you can get the 1.8 or f2 models... Both beautiful lenses and both dirt cheap on the used market. And then I think they have an 85mm 1.9 which will be teetering on your higher price range, they sell for about $200 USD. I am not sure if they are radioactive but I think I noticed some yellow glass when I just had a quick look on eBay, so they probably are... Of course, as you probably already know, you would have to grind up the glass elements and eat the dust for there to be a medical concern.

  28. 1) What camera are you using? If you don't mind the focus direction get Nikon Ai-s lenses, they work on everything. If you have mirrorless, a Canon FD set can be had for very cheap. Everything else is outside your price range.

  29. as an extra alternative lens for occasional use I would consider a Helios 44 (there are various versions) which is awesome for portraits. f2.0 (but you must stop down to get it sharp so think of it as a 2.8 or 3.5 lens, but with the option to push it if you really must have that extra bokeh), 55mm focal range, less saturated compared to other lenses but if you shoot RAW photos no problem, if you shoot video just dial up the saturation a bit. The benefit of this lens is the unique and beautiful bokeh. These are some of the most mass produced lenses ever made and therefore cost very little on eBay. Available on various mounts with a cheap adapter- maybe $30-40 total?

  30. Why don't you import them into Resolve and turn on proxy's?
    1 point
  31. @Flynn We are on the same page Flynn , I couldn't understand why the others where giving me a hard time about my focal length selection while your post showed they are the most popular. But BTT please. I don't know why this again developed to a sensor size discussion. I really think people like to talk about it, even if everybody understood it already.

  32. What's interesting is that they've introduced the "fine detail" picture style, which uses (or seems to use) a better debayering algorithm than their standard one. If you look at 5D Mark 3 JPEGs at 100% the per-pixel detail is poor... same as the video detail at 100%. That's one reason both perform much better in raw, but it's less noticeable in stills because by that point you're pushing the lens's resolving limits. Anyhow, there are definitely reasons to go with another brand, particularly if you need 4k in a small camera. But I think Canon's thinking is if you're a working professional you can easily afford a $10k-$30k investment in your camera system.

    Movie "Hillary's America"

Damphousse, "your" (because I show an alternative point of view, he becomes mine. He is sexy. Haven't you seen the statues?) " Fuhrer" (the isolated word Führer is usually avoided in political contexts, due to its intimate connection with Nazi institutions and with Hitler personally. Of course you new that?) "your sh-tty $2 video from being copied in China." China's going to copy my movie? "Take a break from the Marvel movies" (no more Spider Man in tights?) "magically boost your movie production career" "delusional thing" No delusion here. I only sleep with sexy actresses to get to the top. With reference to jobs, I was pointing out an area which isn't fair practice by the Chinese. It potentially could lead to some jobs to the USA - not saying it would. Note: "copy movies, ELECTRONICS and SOFTWARE" You may wish to educate yourself and read this report as a reference. http://www.ipcommission.org/report/ip_commission_report_052213.pdf My advice? Get a good well written screenplay, some lights, some audio equipment, and whatever camera you own (Sony, Canon, Nikon, Panny, BM, etc) and make your masterpiece. Left field has become the bat boy and the umpire has become the pitcher. Don't try deciphering, as you should take your advice. Who is residing at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave will have zero effect on how much your film grosses So Trump or Hillary will have zero effect on how much my film grosses? $hit, $hit, $hit. I need Jessica Jones. LOL. My bowling ball is not as sharp as yours. Cheers. **************************Of course you KNEW that? (instead of "new" - don't want to confuse you)

  39. Hi, I have a Canon 550d/T2i + Sigma 18-35 1.8 which was too heavy/big for my purpose (my trips, concerts, hiking and some events) so I got the GX85 with 12-32 kit lens + Lumix 20mm 1.7 pancake (+ Tiffen Ultra Contrast 3, thanks @Jase) now I can hang the camera in my shoulder without noticing it (I am soooo happy!!) I am new to filmmaking. I've been on vacations in NYC and took the time to learn how to use the camera (trial and error), I read ALL the post in this topic (took me a while!) and learned a lot from you (color grading, filmconvert, luts, A3G3, White balance, downscale 4k, 25/50 vs 30/60 fps, flickering, iDynamic...) Thank you a lot to everyone. Still I need to learn so much and I have so many questions. - Do you guys know if Andrew Reid is going to have another GX85 review soon? - Is there going to be a shooters guide for the GX85? do you think the GH4 guide will work for me? - Is there any other guide/tutorial you would recommend (GX85 / filmmaking)? Thanks!

  40. It seems to GX80 is a kind of breakthrough. I have never seen so much videos of high technical quality here in the forum. We already had great affordable stabilization ( like on the OMDs ) or great 4K quality ( like on the LX100), but this time all comes in a lovely affordable package.

  41. " ....he wants laws followed, what's best for people including LGBQ, etc?" What the hell does that even mean? Follow the law would mean follow the law. Trump has stated publicly that he would appoint a justice that would overturn their right to marry, would overturn Roe vs. Wade if he could. How the hell does that benefit women and LGBT people? "He is complaining American companies sent jobs abroad....why he didn't move jobs from his owns companies from china to EEUU as an example to other companies? To be competitive that is the reality due to the current situation? A lot of Americans out of work due to businesses having left the country in the past decade. " So when it came to getting ahead while being in charge of an american company he used foreign workers to cut cost. But because he will be president he will put the country first and force U.S. companies to keep jobs here. SURE. How is he going to do that?

  42. I'm shooting a documentary wherein I'm trying to capture around 80% of the footage with a FD 1.2 55mm on a speedbooster. I think it looks great in an imperfect way. Typically I'm getting most of my shots @f2.8, which is pretty darn sharp with that lens. But, I've done some low light stuff where I open it to f2 or f1.4-ish, and the chroma aberration really starts to be noticeable. Which isn't all bad, depending. It's a "look" anyway. It's certainly nice being able to shoot low-light if needed. f1.2 on a speedbooster with 1600ISO captures a lot of light. I've even pushed to 3200ISO with useable results...depending on what you consider "useable." Here's the thing some people fail to take into consideration when it comes to IBIS bodies and m43 cameras: The cameras are very light. The lack of mass makes them prone to hand held jitters. But, once you adapt some hunking piece of glass and metal to the body, then the weight of the camera actually becomes beneficial for steadier handheld shots. My take is that the ergos are actually better for shooting video when old vintage glass is on the body.

  46. I also had an excellent experience with Rode's customer support a couple years back. The elastic broke on my Videomic pro and I needed a replacement. I emailed the company to see if they sold the part and instead they just shipped me a baggie with several replacements (that were more robust than the orignals), for free. I'll definitely continue buying their products - and already have.

    Rode microphones

I had a tripod tip over several years ago and my original VideoMic took the brunt of the impact. I emailed Rode to see how much the replacement parts would be, and how to order, and they sent out what I needed, for free, and it got to me in two days! I was very happy, but figured I just caught a CSR in an unusually good mood. Then I broke a foot on one of my VMP's a couple years ago, and they had the same exact response! Really great service, and I've yet to find a 3.5mm on-cam mic that comes close to the VMP. Whenever I get around to going wireless, the RodeLink is at the top of my list.

  48. Time ! thats why , shooting multi cam saves time and money and lets you get alot more setups done per day , I had 6 x G7's rigged up on Gini Rigs that I custom made , I had 2 rigs with Nikon 80-200mm lenses, 2 with Nikon 28-70mm lenses and one with a Nikon 20-35mm lens the sixth G7 was used on steady rigs and dolly tracks and sliders with various different lenses , all cameras had Metabones XL speedboosters on them to give me a Super 35mm field of view on the lenses , most set ups I would run 3 cameras , a close up, a mid and a wide , the actors loved it as we could do long takes 3 min passes at times and pick off head shots, mids and wides all in one performance . Some set ups I did run 6 cameras at once as we had some complex special FX shots with prosthetic heads and blood and gore etc . Multi cam is the way to go , we shot the movie in 44 days , and if we had done it traditionally with just 1 camera it would have taken maybe 60 days plus . So multi cam saved us alot of time and money , the Panasonic G7s all performened amazing no issues at all and we shot 12 hr days every day , the rigs and camera and lenses got Battle Tested to the limit and all worked beyond my expectations , The G7 is an amazing camera its very very good in low light much better than the GH4 as it has a newer better sensor , I could not have shot this movie without the G7 it let me shoot 3 or 4 stops under for most of the movie , I like that low light Gordon Willis - "Prince of Darkness" look so the G7 let me push that to the limit with no noise and fizz at all in the blacks , its very very good!!
