DPReview BANS links to EOSHD!!
Amazeballs and 11 others reacted to Andrew Reid for a topic
I am just a guy with an independent voice in the world of camera reviews without hundreds of cozy ties to people from the manufacturers, without ads splattered all over the screen, without sponsors on my every video, yet still I find EOSHD mired in a world of cut throat rivalry. Only very occasionally like in the beginning with DPReview have I been given a leg up in this industry and even then it only takes one person like Barney to massacre that relationship too. The other blogs like NoFilmSchool, Cinema5D and NewsShooter spend 10's maybe even 100's of thousands of dollars trying to punt my homebrew EOSHD site into oblivion and I just find the whole thing utterly distasteful. Rather than offering a new talent an opportunity they instead I am treated like just another commercial rival to be beaten. In the end it is up to you guys to choose. The managed platform of platitudes and advertorial, or the honest opinions and educational books of an artist/filmmaker. May the best guy win.12 points -

Unfortunately I fell out with their 2 main guys, over disagreements with the direction their editorial was taking. I guess this is the result but it's still a nasty thing to do to their own forum users. I don't care so much about myself. But why punish their own readers and limit their knowledge of external resources? It is a shame as I have met some of the DPR team in person and count them as friends - Lars and Richard in particular. Lars used to live in Berlin! There's a bit more to the story as well... I began to be frustrated at every turn at how hard it was to get my articles past their main editor Barney and something else happened, something deeply disturbing, that I will not go into detail about.8 points -

Such an underrated camera... Ergonomics of a Canon or Nikon without the 1970's mirror SHIT Smallest 4K file sizes on the planet but the highest quality compression..... THANK YOU H.265 YOU ARE THE FUTURE IT IS JUST NOBODY ELSE KNOWS IT!!!! Ultra clean and noiseless ISO 800, acceptable 1600, falls off a cliff after that but who cares? So does a RED Epic! Great battery life, great EVF... heck it has an EVF... Unlike my 1D C!! Guess which was cheapest! Articulated screen but still feels like it is built like a tank and I had mine out in the pouring rain.... didn't pose an issue. Weather sealed yet articulated screen.... Canon take note. Just look at the images... lovely! Great colour and detail The S lenses... some of the best Super 35mm this side of PL cinema $30k stuff. It is a goth of a camera It is discontinued Nobody cares about it but the ones in the know... The GX85 has fantastic colour... Just the right balance between natural 'scientifically correct colour' and memory colour.4 points -

Where have I heard all this before....? Oh that's right, after every single camera Canon has released. Same complaints. And all the prior times cameras that where so so hated like the 5Dmkiii, C300, C100, 1DC and XC10 all ended up being loved in the end. Why is that, what was it that made all the hate go away....? Oh that's right, people actually used it instead of looking at numbers and charts. No I'm not a fanboy, don't own a canon and won't buy the 5Div. But I know the story. Same thing with the XC10. It was almost only the fact that it got so much hate that interested me enough to buy it. I was the first to give it a positive review, since I had actually used it. And man did I had to sit through pissed of comments. The reason I think history will repeat itself is that its Canon. People always glance at a spec paper and think they automatically have the whole picture. They think a huge company and market leader like Canon would just put something together and not think it through very very very very very veeeery thoroughly. My money is on they knowing exactly what they are doing. And I don't think we are going to see thread after thread about bad color, fpn, over heating, etc. Personally I might get an mkiii again when they drop. I prepared a bit by buying an even older member of their top prosumer line. So yes, by tomorrow I own a Canon and therefore by forum law I will be a Fanboy-sheep-idiot-uneducated-noob. Basically anything accept someone who likes the camera, because the specs makes that impossible...3 points -

Dude, I love your mission statement from the frontpage's 'about'-section: That kinda continues in a philosophy that 'nobody should be blocked from participating in a community where they can learn and showcase their talent as a cinematographer or filmmaker due to a difference in opinion, skill level or approach to filmmaking'. You've also allowed and welcomed everyone who was willing to add somekind of positive contribution to the site. I remember even one guy losing his cool and asked to please be banned already, yet you didn't seem to really see the point in that, but did as he asked and told him to come back should he have a change of heart (which he did). That's what I like about this place, just somewhere where free spirits can come together and share knowledge and opinions, without everyone having to follow strict directions and having to be on the same page. DPReview is a very practical site, but I wouldn't really want to 'hang out' there, sorta speak. I like opinions. I like your blog (I might not agree with everything you always say, but then again, why have an opinionated blog and open forum if there's nothing to discuss) or YouTube channels like TheCameraStoreTV with Jordan and Chris or DigitalREV with Kai and Lok. Because, unboxings and going through the specs is something everyone can do. I can't stand CNET reviews. I need someone to get down to the nitty gritty and not sugarcoat things. What is it really all about? What do you think? I don't go over to other sites much, other than the rumor channels, because they don't understand fun, creativity and community that much. I feel pretty much at home here. You've created a nice atmosphere for people to speak their minds freely. I thank you for it and hope it continues on like that.3 points

Sign me up for the Gh5 even if IBIS is all they bring to the table. Right now with my current gear - Gh4 and Olympus 7-14, Panasonic 12-35 and 35 - 100 - and the venerable Voigtlander 25 - Sliders, steadicams, panasonic's AMAZING native codec (it really is under rated) and the turbo editing speed of FCPX .. -I reckon i could be QUICKLY creating great content for the next 5 years without any need of an update. Its nice to have too many stories to tell, a ton of forward bookings from clients and no new gear acquisition syndrome!3 points -
What a joke! Here it is anounced: http://www.canonrumors.com/canon-announces-the-eos-5d-mark-iv-dslr/ This is extraordinary, their press release is completely video oriented. They say that they listen to the video customer and brought the best video specs. how funny that is... Yet no C-LOG, nor word on crop, prehistoric codec while they put a real one in the XC10. They take us for pigeons so pigeons can go and get it but I will pass! Very sad to see those confirmed specs.3 points

Luke... I have to say THANK YOU for posting CLEAR and true statements about the 5Dmk4... It seems EVERYONE is blindly hating on this camera because it doesn't do a FF 4K@120 video, take photos, brush your teeth, comb your hair, and take out your trash. There is never going to be a PERFECT camera let alone one for under $2999. And if ANYONE thinking a GH5 is going to be a stellar STILLS camera has got to be kidding themselves. Canon has made no bones about the fact that the 5Dmk4 is a STILLs camera first and foremost with really good basic video features which are MORE than useable in capable hands. I also find it VERY interesting the people who crap on canon the most never want to show their own demo reel of work.... just my two cents... thanks Luke and keep hope alive!! Let the bashing begin P.S. Im very interesting in see how the Fuji X-T2 does for 4K even though it's a dreaded 1.7 crop I always liked Fuji Colors and its a pretty nice priced option.2 points -

100% Agree with you Andrew. I discovered the first footage of the NX1 through your video in Portugal if I recall correctly. Now I'm filming a documentary about handicapped kids in Ukraine with the NX1. This morning we filmed in a swimming pool using an underwater sleeve and it was great. This camera sustained rain, snow, and some falls. We already have over 2TB of footage (using hacked NX1 with 120 to 140Mbs bitrate) and almost shot everything with the 16-50S lens. This thing is so amazing. I keep looking for something better and considered many times changing but after renting a FS5 + Shogun and a BMD Urasa mini, I am keeping my NX1. It just seems the only 4K camera (not talking about Red or Arri) out there that actually resolves a resolution of 4K. Everything else (especially Sony) seems like FullHD + to me. Now it's disconnected... and it sucks. (also we are using a Lensbaby 56mm macro velvet which is an NX mount lens. Beautiful crazy footage coming out of it ! Very interesting alternative to the 60mm macro Samsung)2 points -

You're right, people aren't seeing the whole picture. They're seeing an extremely cropped picture. It's fine if you like the XC10 and if you like the 5DIV and they fulfill your needs. But seriously it's 2016 and yes I need the ability to change lenses and yes I need at least APS-C and yes it's reasonable to expect this in a $3500 dollar camera body. The fact that Canon are performing acrobatics to protect their cinema line while the competition leaves them in the dust is infuriating to everyone with huge Canon glass investment. Canon bodies have their strengths with color and reliability, but it doesn't matter how great this camera ends up being in the real world, the crop is simply a deal breaker.2 points -

Yeah it is over. What a shame the 5D Mark II never got a proper sequel to excite video users. It was such a remarkable moment in filmmaking tools. A democracy in the making. Unfortunately Canon's marketing and margins killed the dream almost as soon as it started. Cinema EOS is all about extracting massive margins. The photography stuff has peaked, it is all down hill in terms of sales from now on in the age of the smartphone. I am happy in the hybrid video/stills niche as we have plenty to look forward to from the other manufacturers...... So maybe it is time to get over the hurt of the past 5 years and move on.2 points -

Aside from the 1D C their C-line can't do decent stills. I want both in one camera. GH5 it is then! It's not the crop by itself which is the issue, it is the mismatch between the lens mount and the sensor crop size. On a Micro Four Thirds camera the lenses are designed to fit the 2x crop sensor. And the lack of mirror means special optical designs like the Metabones Speed Booster XL are possible, effectively giving you a 1.3x crop of your full frame Canon lenses instead of 2x. So I don't even consider the GH4 as a 2x crop camera. The 5D Mark IV is a 1.74x crop camera and stuck with it. You pay that much money for a full frame camera, you expect it to shoot full frame.... no? You expect it to have LOG as well!!2 points -
They really only have like, one edge in the market and that's the "Canon" color thing imo. Because honestly if we're going to continue making 8-bit banding machines in 2016 for video work, (Who'd have thought we'd point one of these things at the sky) - Everybody else is killing them on features. They're just pushing their C-line. If you want C-log from Canon, you'll get it at a ridiculous price.2 points

What really baffled me here with the 5DMKIV, 1DX MKII and MJPEG, is that the XC10 (Like it or hate it) is a 2000 USD Camera with an inferior Image processor (Digic 5) but comes with a more "modern" codec : XF-AVC 4.2.2 Codec 8Bit internal and 10 external and Canon Log. If they could have done that on a Digic5 IP, why can't they do that on a new Digic6+ IP??!?!?2 points -

It is not done because of hack - you just have to change video out in menu from NTSC to PAL. Than you will have 100 fps instead of 120 fps.100fps can easily manage 180Mbps - it did not see any issue so far. I will se later if it is completely OK. Yes, it is not so slow as 120fps but becuase of compression I will probably prefer it ... yes - there is still aliasing but no compression artefacts.2 points -
Petition for Samsung NX1 hack
cisco150 and one other reacted to Pavel Mašek for a topic
Yes,60p can produce nice image only below ISO 400, 120p only below ISO 200 and 4k below ISO 1600. I saw unedited clip from A6300 with ISO 3200 and it was quite noisy but noise grain was finer and detailed (filmic?) and not blockier as it is on NX1. But in general according dpreview - NX1 is little less noiser than is A6300 in photo mode... I have tried also hack v5.3 with killall and still had dropped frames with bitrate 100Mbps. Finally my solution is switch to 100 frames (1/4 slowmo 25fps) and then I can use very high bitrate (180Mbps!) without any dropped frames. I shoot in 4K30p so it would be problematic to have 25p clip in the project - to make 120 frames (1/4 slowmo 30fps) I simply make clip faster (20%) or use Twixtor for conversion from 25fps to 30fps. It is worth to do it as 180Mbps 100p image is very nice and without any compression artefacts.2 points -
The biggest issue with life is that there is no structures, no resolution, no ending. There is no order. It's a mass of complete randomness, where being good or bad does not matter. Some times you get caught, some times you don't. Just an endless mess, floating in space, a turtle's hallucination. Vs film - a good film - it takes you on an emotional complex journey - a window into characters that are interconnected and with emotions and ideas that matter. It all matters in there. A good film can be better than life itself, just like a good book, a good video game - an experience that elevates you to another place. With the scam chapter on this camera nerd site not closed - it will never be closed. It will continue forever. There will never be a resolution. The scam artist will not learn his lesson and become a good human being. Life is strangly unwritten and messy and frustrating and we're all just floating around in it. Never to know what we should have done better.1 point

I'd guess it was about 80°F and no, no cover; I did have the screen articulated out for the tests. I just got the camera around the time that the newest firmware came out a few weeks ago, and though the firmware notes only mention fixing overheating in still photos, I saw a bunch of people on a DPReview forum claiming to see improvement in video recording (while some claimed to see none). So I decided to do a test myself, though I have no experience with the previous firmwares so I can't really say if there is an improvement or not, but both tests gave me right around 30minutes, which like I said, for me, is more than I'll probably ever need.1 point -

As someone who preordered the X-T2 the minute preorders opened, and then cancelled that same preorder in order to buy a used A6300, I have to say I think you're way too hard on the A6300. Yes, the ergonomics are weak compared to the beauty that Fuji is, but it's still a pretty amazing camera, one of the best Sony has made, including its FE line. The X-T2's omission of 120fps and the A6300's inclusion of it was a big factor in my change of plans, as was the fact that it was half the price. From my tests I get 30minutes of 4k before overheating happens, and I've never in my life records for that long in one sitting; I know tons of people do, but I don't and probably never will. And from what I've read from reviews, rolling shutter is the same between both cameras. Not trying to knock the X-T2 in any way, I wish I could have both, but to say the A6300 is anything less than great is hard to swallow.1 point -
Yeah, exactly why it's no use mentioning or having hopes for them. The only plus side is that the 1D C has come down in price... which is still a traditional style camera without all the modern mirrorless bells and whistles and gives you a bitchy workflow. Though yeah, the results speak for themselves. But unless it has a 'C'-badge you can kinda forget about it. And with the increasingly capable competition and Canon upping security protocols trying to block exploits, I also think people will find better things to do than trying to hack another Canon. I want something up from the GH4, yet not spend the kind of money that would set me back an A7RII/A7SII set-up with fullframe covering lenses or having to go up to the league of Sony FS5 and Kinefinity Terra with all the add-ons. I just want to spend like 1799~2499,- and be done with it. Have my ideal camera that does it all. Something in between the things we've already seen the GH4, GX80, NX1, A6300 and D5500 do. How hard can that be? Sure there's Blackmagic which kinda tries to bridge the gap, but since the BMPCC I haven't really seen a camera that could be used as casual as the GH4. Also, shooting/light conditions have to be near perfect shooting with those. I get it, it's a 'cinema camera', but that doesn't mean I only want to shoot on well lit sets...1 point

1.33x Shootout - INTRUDER
tellure reacted to Tito Ferradans for a topic
I shot a small narrative (I won't call it a "short") mixing all 1.33x anamorphic adapters with various taking lenses. The goal was to test out if all that talk of "this adapter is good, this one is bad", to see if we can actually notice the difference between lenses when there's a story being told. I included both well lit and low light shots to evaluate performance with different apertures. The camera used was Kinefinity's Kinemini 4k, and I shot it all raw for more flexibility in post. Taking lenses were all Russian, from 28 up to 135mm. The blog post has a cheat chart with all the data for each shot. Can you tell when this or that lens is being used? Is there anything in particular that bugs you? Do you think this test makes the difference between 1.33x adapters easier to notice? Lenses used were Century Optics WS-13, Panasonic LA7200, Isco 16:9 Video Attachment I, SLR Magic Anamorphot 1.33x-50, Century Optics 16:9 (the small one). http://www.tferradans.com/blog/?p=8333 There's more info on the blog post above, but if you're feeling lazy, here's the video.1 point
