  1. Micro body and features, but with the 2.5K sensor, would be my ideal right now.

  2. An APS-C sized pocket would be amazing. Smallish form factor with tiltable screen, better battery and speed-boostable to FF... just imagine .

  3. Hi folks, I wanted to let the EOSHD community know that my first feature is screening as part of the Urbanworld Film Festival in New York in two weeks. Some of you may live in the city so I’d love to meet you there, or at least let you know it’s happening. While I had been familiar with the site earlier, I became a regular EOSHD reader in the months immediately after we wrapped production. I also started reading Reduser, BMCuser, and DVXuser at that same time, but a year later this is the only of those that I check every day. I think there’s a great mix here of people looking to improve their grasp of technique, and those looking to improve their ideas about creativity itself. That’s why I’ve read and commented so consistently. On a technical/gearhead note, we shot principally on the RED Camera, but used the Canon C500 (+Odyssey recorder) for night exteriors, and had some b-roll and pickups shot on the GH4. One scene was even shot on an iPhone, but it was supposed to look like it. Here’s an article in No Film School about the film from a couple weeks ago. In any case, the New York premiere of my first feature is a big moment in my life and filmmaking career and I’d love to share it with whatever members of this community are able to attend. Here’s a link to the screening info and the trailer is below. Thanks!

    NEW Zeiss Cine Zoom

I know that this is probably a great lens with a good price for a cinema zoom, but for a similar price those new Angenieux zooms seem like a much better proposition.

  6. If Panasomic pushes the boundaries with the GH5, it's because they have no other choice but to. They relinquished their #3 spot in mirrorless market share to Canon last year. They need to either be bold, or make microwaves.

    GH3 vs G7

No contest, get the G7 over the GH3. I'd even prefer the G6 in most cases over a GH3, and in fact that is what I did.... I purchased a G6 rather than a GH3.

  8. I just got the Zhiyun Crane and am definitely impressed. It worked perfectly with my 70D + 10-18 IS. But I tried pushing the 1200g limits and was disappointed. My 70D + Sigma 18-35/1.8 Art = 755g + 811g = 1566g. If I'm extremely careful, it hangs in there and can pan, but walking with it just about always introduces the slight fast up & down bounce that someone else mentioned they got with the Sigma 50/1.4 Art. This was the same with and without the lens support. I will be trying other lenses on it. But I might not find the right one-handed low-light narrow-depth-of-field Dual pixel AF smooth gimbal setup until I get the Sigma 35/1.4 Art (150g lighter and 1.2" shorter) and/or the EOS M5 (only 455g, but you need the 110g EF to EF-M adapter). Unfortunately even when I can get a GH5 someday it won't lighten things up, considering the weights of GH4 + Metabones Speedbooster Ultra (569g + 172g = 741g). Sure would be nice to have a little beefier version of the Crane available since I'm not planning to step up to the bulky and imposing Shining, but for some people I can see the Shining (4kg limit) would be the answer. I'm still curious if the Crane would be any better with the 26650 batteries (and where to get them?).

    GH3 vs G7

Go for the g7. You can get one new for less than a second hand gh3. Shoot 4k and down sample to 1080 and you will get a beautiful image. Plus it's smaller and lighter, AND it has peaking. All you lose is a headphone jack and weather sealing really

  10. His speech pattern and body language changed when confronted about the lack of C-log, it clearly suggests elevated stress and anxiety, which implies that he didn't know the actual reason behind the lack of C-log, and he was making up an explanation on the fly in front of the camera.

    Who made this lens?

This 46/2x lens is my favorite size for FF camera. Suitable to add 77mm filter thread for the biggest filters I owned. I think they are identical. But coating colors are different. Which brand was original? Zeiss Ikon? Möller?

  15. they are trying to fix it via a firmware update. It is non uniform affecting the right side and corners more than the center. The magenta varies by lens, focal length and f stop so it is not easy to grade out. I would expect this will make it difficult to fix via firmware but I cant say. It can be minimal or quite severe and I have heard of people having to rma 3 cameras before getting an acceptable one so in my opinion it is a big issue. There are not many alternatives though. Sony fs5 or fs7 maybe? Or perhaps an older red camera, these are all assuming you are wanting a raw shooting camera.

  16. Where did you hear that the NX1 looks similar to RED cameras. I am not saying it isn't true I have just not hear this.

  17. Amazing tech. The reason why Canon can't give us anything in their DSLR is because they have to protect their cine line. Here is the catch. There cine line is full of shit spec wise so to protect shit specs you have to release even shitier specs. Panasonic brings 4K 120fps RAW to their cine line. So no matter how amazing the GH5 will be they won't impact the lines above. This is half a joke but not so far from the truth I am afraid.. https://***URL not allowed***/panasonic-announces-varicam-pure-with-uncompressed-4k-120-fps/

    GH3 vs G7

I have both camera's. I shoot mainly weddings and I own a GH3, a G6 and a G7. My collegue uses the GH4. Which camera is 'better'? Well, in terms of IQ the G7 has the edge simply because of the 4k mode. In 1080p mode, they are (all) pretty similar though. Maybe a slight edge to the G7 in low light being a bit less noisy at ISO 1600 and above. Nothing striking. Just make sure you never have to go higher than that. But there are many more factors which make a camera good or bad. The GH3 is still my main cam. Why? - Much longer battery life then G6 / G7 - The abillity to use an EXTERNAL MONITOR (G6 / G7 cannot) - Body handling - Headphone jack (G6 / G7 do not have it) For me, these are of the upmost important. As well as reliability. The GH3 has not let me down once since I've got it over 3 years ago. Never overheats and never fucks up. *knocks on wood And the image actually still strikes me every time I use it. Yes, it is time for something new and maybe the GH5 will be it. But until then, this is my A-cam. Here is an example of what it can do

  19. Gopro suckled at margins with only small incremental changes as long as they could, someone like Xiaomi now has the power to crush them. The only thing that could potentially save Gopro is their name/marketing hype... are they Apple? That is the 1,000,000 dollar question (my instincts tell me they are not).
    1 point
  20. Absolutely. Along with an Attached LCD Screen, along excellent touch functionality and menu. And arguably better sound (they are apparently also working on different mics for the Yi 4k).
    1 point
  21. Simple economics says GoPro is done if they don't make some kind of change. Why would people buy a GoPro when they could buy the Yi 4k for about half? If word gets around well enough (and with smaller products like this it usually does) GoPro will be having a very hard time this sector. DJI should also be worried I think.

  22. Picking up ProTune was the best thing GoPro did. But that is more in the realm of professional work, and most of those features are wasted on people who don't want too much work in post (except movie makers). Also, when they picked up ProTune, people (arguably) weren't using them too much foe grading. They should have had better low light and battery life along with other things. And STABILIZATION. Also, GoPro prices have been the biggest cause of its Financial Downfall. I don't want to give you the figures, you can check any source that seems reasonable. GoPro is seriously down.

  23. GoPro is far from being "ahead".

  24. I think it would be a genius move for Canon to include raw video in the M5. If they're truly having technical difficulties implementing 4K into their smaller cameras due to heat dissipation, the inclusion of 1080p Raw would put them in a different category and nobody would care if it had 4K. But they would never do it because they don't think outside the box, they are run by bean counters (as all the major camera manufacturers are) But with their "history with ML" you'd think it would be pretty simple for them to implement such a feature.

  25. Nail in the coffin? GoPro is still light years ahead of the competition. Protune, Cineform, flat profiles, global shutter...they had this years before people ever heard of Log. You can shoot 4K Protune flat and export to 1080p 4:4:4 right inside GoPro studio.

  27. Haha yeah, looking to pick up a pocket for about 600.. I had a 50d for a while, but sold it on before I could fully check out the RAW - only had a slow cf card. I was also considering a 5D mk2, just love tiny cameras too much though! What would be really cool is a pocket with stabilization and dpaf - an eos m5 could almost be this camera.. some amazing cameras out there for under 1k
    1 point
  28. Are you gonna go with the Pocket? If I ever find a new one for $600 or less, I will probably buy one. The Raw image is just undeniable. For now I'm enjoying 50D Raw with Canon colors.

  30. I'd be happy with s16 and mft for 1k, and use the metabones speedbooster - after working with some BM 2.5k footage, I've decided to get a Blackmagic and forget about the Panasonics and Canons etc! An EF mount would be a great option though, for sure..

  31. Nice write-up. I just bought an X-T2 (in a small shop in Venice where I am shooting and holidaying!) We'll see what it can do here, as it's a pretty photogenic place, quite demanding on dynamic range with all the narrow walkways and bright sun. I find Pro Neg Std does seem to lift the shadows nicely and sharpness all the way down + using 180 degree shutter helps with cinematic motion candence. The footage out there so far hasn't been very impressive as not many people are buying it for video.... yet? The only annoyance I have so far is that they removed the video record button and to switch between video & stills mode is now on the drive lever, which is an awkward bastard of a dial to say the least - not sure what they were thinking ergonomically with that one!! You cannot assign video to a funtion button or enter video mode in the blink of an eye. It takes a fiddle with the lever and an accidental turn of the ISO wheel...hmm. Am shooting via a passive Canon EF adapter at the moment, don't have my NDs or Fuji glass with me but at night I'll be shooting wide open at 1/50 anyway. What this thing offers over the Samsung NX1 appears to be a few advantages - - Fuji glass - Not discontinued - Better at high ISOs - Better EVF - Smaller - Speed Booster compatible (although a third party one is in the making for NX I've yet to see what the performance is like) That last point is very important as it turns the X-T1's 1.74x crop factor to 1.23x - similar to the Canon 1D C, with a huge range of full frame glass - A Mount, Nikon, Contax Zeiss, Canon FD, etc. So if we consider the X-T2 as a near-full frame A7R II replacement with the colour science and ergonomics fixed, for half the price, I think it's looking like a front runner. I'm off to shoot and find out!

  37. Of course you are right about "M" mode with a variable ND but I think "S" mode and a fixed ND is useful for run & gun type shooting. BTW, every cam I have owned displayed the auto iso value when shooting in any mode be it video or stills ... only Panasonic doesn't

  39. Kino, thank you for posting these fine examples of images from the C500. I think the color pallet coming from this camera is wonderful, the 2K those last three spots were shot in was WOW! Knowing you need some great glass to focus the image on that sensor to get the WOW, I wonder what new options there are that won't be twice as much as the C500 + Odyssey? And a big thank you Jimmy, that Man Beast was beautiful, I had seen a behind the scenes on the making of that when the C500 first came out, along with Steve Poster's, Rhythm of Life (stunning in 4K) I'm shooting now with a Sony F3, along with a Zeiss ZF kit of primes, along with a Nikon 35-70 and a Nikon 80-200. I love the image i'm getting with this kit, but want to up the game and capabilities next year. Broatch

  40. Well, I imagine many cameras don't display auto ISO levels when recording video in S or A mode; and, you're right they probably should do it. But honestly, S and A modes are foreign to me now in video mode and I think most people are routinely in M mode with ND filters or stepless aperture lenses for minor exposure adjustments. In all the photography-related modes auto ISO is displayed on the GX80.

  41. No, for the same reason there is no ML in the 1DC. There is no firmware. The 1DC needs to be sent in for firmware updates. You need to do some seriously illegal stuff to get it

  43. Just returned from another Festival, this time i brought my new Olympus 17mm 1.8 - what a nice lens! The manual focus is really nice and not snappy like the one of the Olympus 12mm f2.0. Also works very fine with the Tiffen Ultra Contrast, screencap (1080/50):

Americans, on the other hand, democratically crib so uniformly. I love their reviews. This review was so clumsy, disorganised and cribby, it was hilarious. Never mind that the product got completely ignored.

  46. which version 4k or 4.6k? Both record raw video btw. Both suffer from fpn especially the 4k. You have to light well and cannot go over 400 ISO with fpn on the 4k, 4.6k is better and can be used at 800 ISO and maybe 1600 ISO but fpn might start to show. The 4.6k is suffering from magenta cast issues and neither has a olpf so moire and aliasing could be an issue. Note these comments are anecdotal since I have personally used neither.

  47. This is so tedious. It's incredibly ignorant to keep on saying "off the shelf sensor". To keep on re-iterating this means zero understanding of what it actually takes to make an image, especially so if you want to brag about being an academic in screen culture. Olympus cameras are highly praised for their look, yet they use "off the shelf" Panasonic or Sony sensors. Somehow they're renowned for their look, because of the whole image processing pipeline, even though they use the same sensors used in many of the G series panny cameras. Olympus don't have a patent on their "look" though. So same sensors, totally different imaging outcomes, none of which are patented. They do highly customise their sensors, and there are lot's of ways you can do so...the CFA for example... Leica are the same, they have also used "off the shelf" sensors in the past and somehow they too are praised for their look, and also, surprise surprise, have no patent for their look, and yet, it's the very reason many buy them. I thought you'd have wised up by now, but you keep digging in on the ASICS and sensor design. Here's a clue. ASIC's have nothing to do with the sensor design. You assumed so because of Land's comment, but then you couldn't explain why some cameras don't seem to have ASIC's. I've challenged you and you haven't answered. According to Land and you for quoting him, the prerequisite for a cinematic camera maker is designing your own sensor AND ASICs and yet you can't account for Canon, Arriflex or Blackmagic... what do you think they're using if there isn't an ASIC ? How is the ASIC linked to sensor design ? In what way is using an ASIC making the sensor design more credible ? What do other camera manufactures use if they aren't using ASICs ? ASIC's run the camera, not the sensor.... ASIC's aren't related to sensor deisgn any more or less than FPGAs are. You still haven't brought up the alternative yet because you don't know. Go google FPGA. You posting history is entirely relevant when your credibility is at issue. Your backflipping contradictory posts are just as insightful as when you first posted them. And yeah, it's pretty normal for companies not to protect their IP using patents which require them to publish in detail the IP itself. I'm pretty sure RED will have a patent on RedCode, but not your precious ASICs. JB
