  1. Shot this on the red one mx - The Red One MX - dynamic range is not there, but it has a look, some kind of unique look - not like film, not like the alexa, but it's own look - older but its there - something nice, kind of like the what's that camera from China - the Kinefiniti shot with red zoom lensses - 18-50 + 50=150 plus ultra contrast 1 - man that flares nicely. ultra con gives such amazing flares - where have you been my whole life. So screw new cameras, get an old used camera and mess around with it. shot at 640 ISO, 4.5k , and that's it 11 stops dynamic range, 10 stops? who knows, who cares. it works - it doesn't overheat. it doesn't shoot slo motion unless you crop it but the motion cadence feels right, not like a videogame like the dragon or weapon or slimer new camera they have. find its weaknesses, find its strengths and shoot some stuff. don't be afraid to go into the past and be made fun of, and who cares, just work with your camera as best as you can, and make mistakes constantly and try to get better. lord knows how i screwed this one up, i should have done more wideshots and had more variety of poses of people

  2. Looks great David! Promoting hate, however, causes suffering. Hating someone is like taking poison and expecting to hurt the other person. The only person hurt is the hater, mentally and physically: stress hormones damage healthy tissue, reduce immune function, etc. Additionally, look at all the information about what is going on, from both sides, and from other countries around the world if you'd like to get a better understanding of what is really happening. Do you want to be a leader helping to heal yourself, your community, and the planet, or do you want to be a slave-pawn in someone else's selfish game? We need to focus on loving ourselves, those around us, and everyone else around the planet, and holding those accountable who are promoting division and hate, replacing them with more enlightened leaders.

  3. The official Canon intro video does demo and talk about this feature specifically as great "for vloggers" with no mention of selfies. Im a C100 and XC10 owner extremely bored of hearing the video-shooting minority complain about the quality of video on Canon's stills cameras. Most people think it's Canon being money grabbing and pushing users to the more expensive Cinema line to get decent video. However the more benign explanation is that it's always been part of Canons ethos to honour existing customers by not making their purchases obsolete every 5 minutes (*cough* Sony *cough*). As you say, stills is their focus outside of the pro video segment. HOWEVER - I do think the graduation of the M camera line to semi-pro with the M5 presents a problem for Canon. Because mirrorless is by nature far more of a hybrid 50/50 stills/video beast. DSLRs fundamentally make pretty awful video cameras, but with mirrorless the form factor etc is pretty much just as good for video as stills (hence the success of the A7S and GH4 and the apparent discontinuation of the 1DC). The line Canon have clearly drawn between DSLRs and their cinema line makes sense, but to omit good video from a true hybrid mirrorless is like Victornox selling Swiss Army Knives that have one side full of sharp high quality tools and the other side full of blunt Chinese knock-off blades. Or like manufacturing a tandem bike frame with no second seat on the back. It doesn't make any sense. The M5 is big news because it means Canon are clearly phasing in quality mirrorless cameras, which has been a big question mark over their heads. But "phasing in" is the key phrase here. They are still market leaders so they have no need to hurry. A big part of the reason they are market leaders is the brand loyalty and respect they command, which comes in part from not ditching existing customers for the sake of winning the latest and greatest spec war.

  4. Exactly. But coming back to the Fuji topic. Fuji and Olympus have something in common. Olympus has such a great stabilisation system. Everybody said, "If they could do proper video." Fuji has such great colours, "If they could do proper video". Now, Fuji did a huge step into the right direction. To me, this is good enough, because I also need very good stills. Of course, I would also be interested in slow motion, but every camera has it's downsides. For instance, I wouldn't shoot stills with an URSA mini.

  5. Love the film. We should also note that Ed is only listed as the DP, which implies that he neither wrote the script nor came up with the hashtag, so maybe we should confine our comments to his cracking camera work.

  6. Great piece. The hashtag, I agree, is a bit awkward. Trump is capitalized in the hashtag. My first interpretation was Trump as a noun using Yoda grammar (verb in the wrong place). The video doesn't ever use Trump as a verb. The refrain that is constantly repeated is "we believe". A good slogan is one that is clear and not open to misunderstanding. I can just imagine Trump followers calling his opponents haters because of the hashtag.

Well you could always get a Canon. Some of the cheaper ones even come with the Kendy Ty function button, which I understand is better than 4K and Magic Lantern combined.

  9. Ty, You may have better luck posting your questions on reduser.net - there are numerous LTO users (a must for raw workflow backup and archiving) and a handful of Hackintosh users. I gave up on Hackintosh many moons ago due to lack of 3rd party driver support and instability caused by OSX software updates. I have been using the HP LTO5 drive you are considering on a 2013 Mac Pro with BRU software (http://www.tolisgroup.com/) with great success! LTFS never worked for me - too slow for large directories and somewhat unreliable. If I were you, I would start with Windows and explore LTFS and see if it meets your needs. Best of luck, Marco

  10. Interesting question. I think some of the replies have missed the point a little. The OP has already decided to shoot his interviews on video so discussing VR or 3D is a little like saying why don't you write a stage play or a book. They are different mediums and the OP is interested in e source material being available for 2D video. VR and 3D will be a thing at some point in the future but there is no point second guessing such infant technologies. FWIW I think you should either shoot on film as per Bioskop, or shoot on something 4K and create a master in the highest quality, most common codec you can. Which is probably Prores, right? Stuff disappears digitally when it is stored on niche hardware or with a niche codec that becomes quickly obselete so go with something popular and make new masters each time this changes. Good luck!

  11. are you saying Ed's video was promoting hating Trump? that's ridiculous. the video only promotes love, and the hashtag reads to me more like "Trump hates, and we have risen above him". the high road rarely involves violence. and Trump definitely hates. not that we should talk any more about politics ever. beautiful work, Ed! I thought I'd heard that camera has 13 stops?

  12. crappy shit. overpriced and shitty video spec. Same thing with good 4K and CLOG would have been a monster. Maybe with the FF version coming soon we will have better luck. Oh wait... it will have 5DIV sensor and same video specs AKA no CLOG and awful crop. Thanks but no. Let's see now Sony A9 and nikon mirrorless... 2017 here we come

  13. If you only need 1080p and aren't a fan of mu43, the Nikon D750 is the obvious choice. High DR, 1080/60p, nice colors, very little RS, robust system, and great handling.

  14. In this piece it means both ways. This is more clear when you study all the content from both sides. The unconscious mind doesn't do well with negatives. A better form is #wepromotelove and leave out the other party, which is unfortunately a negative implication in today's politics.

    EOSHD C-LOG

I finally go to take this beast out into the wild. I'm most amazed with the autofocus capabilities, coupled with the EOSHD.com C-LOG picture profile. I ran the cam on my DJI Ronin-m with a 50mm at F1.2... Just for this, I may consider adding the mkIV to my bag. If the DR was just a little bit better, I'd be completely sold. Cam Settings - 1080/60p - EOS HD CLOG Picture Profile - 125 Shutter - F1.2 - Tiffen Variable ND Filter - DJI Ronin-M - Graded with FCPX Color Finale + EOS HD Cine Lut

  17. Nice write-up. I just bought an X-T2 (in a small shop in Venice where I am shooting and holidaying!) We'll see what it can do here, as it's a pretty photogenic place, quite demanding on dynamic range with all the narrow walkways and bright sun. I find Pro Neg Std does seem to lift the shadows nicely and sharpness all the way down + using 180 degree shutter helps with cinematic motion candence. The footage out there so far hasn't been very impressive as not many people are buying it for video.... yet? The only annoyance I have so far is that they removed the video record button and to switch between video & stills mode is now on the drive lever, which is an awkward bastard of a dial to say the least - not sure what they were thinking ergonomically with that one!! You cannot assign video to a funtion button or enter video mode in the blink of an eye. It takes a fiddle with the lever and an accidental turn of the ISO wheel...hmm. Am shooting via a passive Canon EF adapter at the moment, don't have my NDs or Fuji glass with me but at night I'll be shooting wide open at 1/50 anyway. What this thing offers over the Samsung NX1 appears to be a few advantages - - Fuji glass - Not discontinued - Better at high ISOs - Better EVF - Smaller - Speed Booster compatible (although a third party one is in the making for NX I've yet to see what the performance is like) That last point is very important as it turns the X-T1's 1.74x crop factor to 1.23x - similar to the Canon 1D C, with a huge range of full frame glass - A Mount, Nikon, Contax Zeiss, Canon FD, etc. So if we consider the X-T2 as a near-full frame A7R II replacement with the colour science and ergonomics fixed, for half the price, I think it's looking like a front runner. I'm off to shoot and find out!

  19. Full press release leaked An extract: the FZ2500. This camera utilizes the same 20.1MP 1" MOS sensor as the LX10, but optimizes video performance with the inclusion of DCI 4K video recording and a true 24 fps frame rate, in addition to more conventional UHD 4K and Full HD recording modes. Also benefitting videographers, this camera includes Panasonic's CINELIKE D and CINELIKE V picture profiles for better grading capabilities, and V-Log L can be added via an optional upgrade. Additionally, high bit rate recording up to 200 Mbps is supported in both MP4 and MOV formats; video can be output over HDMI with a 4:2:2 10-bit signal; there is no recording duration limit; and a built-in ND filter can be used for enhanced control over exposure settings while recording

I'm wanting nothing larger than 5 inch screen and have been checking out ikan VL35, VL5e (is Portkeys the same but different buttons?) Or perhaps BMs very own VA or Lilliput Q5. Be good to know what others are using or any thoughts.

  27. As of today they dont do it. There is no such license. You can apply for approval by Sony to make lenses for it. No one can see into the future but it doesn't look to bright if you want to make an E-mount camera Mft on the other hand is good to go. The third party mft lenses that are also made for M-mount and E-mount cover APSC/s35 with no vignette on m4/3 APS-C.

    "No-budget" Video

I bought a Panasonic G7, got a good price from a friend. The meaning of "no-budget" was that I really don't have a set amount of funds set aside to dedicate to this, just trying to get into a better video camera at the lowest price possible. I picked up a Zhongyi Nikon Lens Turbo too so that I can adapt some of my Nikon. All-in, I'm at about $350, and I still have my D7000. I'll keep details coming once I get the camera. Also, for all of the D5500 suggestions -- my roommate currently owns one, so I'll be borrowing his as needed (was totally unaware that he owned one, I thought it was a D5200 for the longest time, but he doesn't shoot much at all, so I barely ever see it.)

  33. Idk, when I was using my Micro, the most fun I had with the camera was using c-mount lenses. Fujinon TV lenses are often compared to Super Speeds for pennies on the dollar... I mean those suckers are sharp lenses. I have an old set of Cosmicar lenses that added just the right character. The Bell + Howell Angenieux lenses are gorgeous and pair beautifully with the Pocket and Micro, as do the Kern Paillards. They really give you the ability to use fast lenses without a speedbooster/lens combo monstrosity on BM's smaller cams. I'm selling my Micro and hoping to eventually pick up a Pocket and I will only view the camera as the S16 cam it is... So only native M43 lenses with OIS (when I want to go handheld) and S16 glass/TV lenses for everything else... probably in c-mount. Sorry, I know this wasn't exactly the discussion you were having, but I don't think c-mounts are that obscure an option for a lot of BM users.

Did a revisit on my grading of the clips easier in this tread. I did not clip the highlights and was wondering if the colour information still was in the clips. By not using any LUT only grading, but now used the vector based grading in Colour Finale (the last clips), I was able to recover more then in versjon 1. I not sure at all if we get any more dynamic range using the clog picture style vs the standard - too me it looks the same. So when using clog or similar may only help if you want to adjust to another camera - as it may be easier to get the same look, or if one want a special look it may pay off to use the logs. (as you reduce the sharpening and saturation.)

  41. I heard a rumour from a trusted source, who I just made up this minute, that the Panasonic GH5 will also have a "Hollywood Mode". What this means it that by turning on "Hollywood Mode", the sensor organically triples in image performance and whatever you are shooting looks like a Hollywood film instantly. The only issue with this mode is that it's in a buffer mode that records half a second per clip, and the file is 500GB in 4k. So by stitching together a 2 second clip, it would be 2TB. Sadly, the final output is limited to 4:2:0 8bit - so it requires a lot of skill to get Hollywood Mode right. Also Sony will announce their Sony A7F camera alongside their lineup. The "F" stands for "fire". What this means is that you can shoot video in 6k, and the camera takes advantage of the heat generated by6k recording using Stacked CMOS Ignition Sensor technology. This uses the heat to ignite some flames in front of the sensor, and the inner chrome finish on the mount reflects gorgeous light leaks between the back element and the sensor. Another trusted source who is very unreliable said Canon will release a groundbreaking huge surprise with the 5DC-M. The camera is a full frame mirrorless camera for the Cinema EOS range, targeted at previous 5D and 1DC video shooters. The camera records in 4k 10 bit 4:2:2 up to 60fps, and HD up to 180fps in the XF codec. The camera can shoot in full framed Super 35mm in all modes. It also has DPAF, 5-axis in-camera stabilisation, Clog3 and 14 stops of dynamic range, as well as a new improved HDR mode. The unique class-leading features in the new 5DC-M include a now removable touchscreen back LCD which connects to the camera wirelessly, and videographers can use DPAF in very creative ways by using the LCD remotely for gimbals, jibs, sliders and handheld work when the operator is using the EVF. The camera will also come with an XC15 style XLR attachment that sits on the hotshoe. Another incredible feature is an open source software platform to unlock further features out of the camera, like raw video, Magic Lantern style. This is so users can customise the power of the camera to their liking - a massive step up from Canon's often conservative approach. This could mean 4k/60p raw! Before getting excited, the price is steep at $14500 for the body and it will never be available to buy. Ever.

    New Camera advice

The best hybrid camera is either the a7rII (if you're more serious into photos) or a7sII, in the full frame realm. If you're looking for crop, I'm a lover of the NX1, as many of you may know, never tried many aps-c that can deliver such a good video and pictures.

  43. (Berlin, September 15): Panasonic today announced that the new GH5 will be completely wireless - no headphone jack or mic jack. A spokesman said "We consulted Swedish video and audio experts, and they all agreed that analog audio ports were a thing of the past. They thought wireless micing was the way to go. Since they know more than anyone about these issues, we at Panasonic decided, given the go-ahead by Apple, to save money and space on the camera with this initiative." Panasonic will also be coming out with a new line of wireless mics that will have rechargeable batteries. Battery life was not available at this time. Industry enthusiasts who devote a lot of time to on-line forums welcomed this advance.

  45. Finally arrived from Park Cameras today after they kept inexplicably delaying its dispatch! I've sold all my other cameras now except the Nikon D5500 so can't do any direct comparisons but the rolling shutter at 4k definitely looks better than it did on the a6300 Some quirks I've found so far: Dynamic Range and Noise Reduction options are locked to defaults in video mode. When in manual focus mode, can autofocus using the AF-L button before recording but not during. Can't set a custom whitebalance in movie mode (as in, the mode where you point the camera at a white/grey object). No bitrate options. All recordings are at 100mbps. That's it for now. Looking forward to doing some shooting with this camera!

    "No-budget" Video

Rochester NY, no way! I live here too! You an RIT student? I started shooting with a GH2 myself and I use a GH4 now. I use the GH2 as a b-cam occasionally but would consider selling to you in your price range, send me a PM. It was my first camera and I made a ton of films with it. I'd recommend mirrorless myself because you aren't tied to a lens mount, and your existing glass will transfer. Many great cheap lens options out there too in older mounts.

  48. This is a typical filmmaking story: no time, have to hurry up and of course no budget ? This is a story about the shoot of our music video and about the mistakes, which you should avoid. The band: 3 people + me (also the director of the shoot) The crew: 1 DP, 3 assistants The lights: 5500K thungsten studio lights + Small Aputure Amaran portable LED light The camera: Lumix GH4, Mitakon Lens turbo Lenses: Soligor 1.33x anamorphic adapter, Pentax SMC 50mm f1.7, Tamron 17-50mm f2.8, Canon EFS 18-55mm, Canon 85mm f1.8, Gear: Shoulder rig, Fotga DP500II follow focus, manfrotto 550 tripod + fluid head, 2m home made camera slider The pre production started one month before the shoot. I did everything myself: I wrote the script, made the storyboard, wrote the shotlist, etc. I tought that I am fully prepared, but I wasn’t since the whole video was shot at night with a very limited ligthning setup. I did not have the time to try out what are the best settings for the GH4, but will get back to this later. A month before the shoot I sold my AGFA 1.5x anamorphot, which was a very-very big mistake. I missed two great anamorphic lens deals on ebay so 5 days before the shoot I was without anamorphic gear which was one of the keys to the videos feel. Just few days before the shoot, an EOSHD forum member offered me a 1.33x Soligor and I took it. It arrived 2 days before the shoot, so I quickly checked the fastest aperture I can use, than I had to realize: there is no way I can shoot every scene with anamorphic lens attachment. I have my GH4 for 6 months now, before it I was shooting on 5D MKII & t3i. When I got the Lumix I automatically set my PP to James Millers (i really like his work and trusted his settings). After shooting on several live events it performed great, it was easy to color correct and the image was pleasing. Too bad I didn’t read Noam Kroll’s article on GH4 PP settings before the MV shoot. I screwed up, and I did the worst thing that a videographer can do: I trusted my cameras LCD screen, not my knowledge and instinct. I was reminding myself, but we just simply did not have the time to figure out the best settings. Never trust your camera’s screen (but you already know that). The location was nice a huge house with a garden. The first 1,5 hour went to packing and setting the stuff up, than 3 hours was the filming of the band with a very easy 2 light setup + 2m dolly. We thought that it would be great if the band is sitting while playing, but to make sure we’ve got everything, we shot the band in a standing position as well. And we did good, I ended up using just that one shot, because the sitting did not work as expexted. When we moved outside I switched the anamorphot for a Pentax SMC 50mm f1.7, I shot it wide open, than I cropped the footage. I think I was shooting at base, 400 ISO. On the screen it looked okay, in fact blacks were crashed and the image was underexposed, which caused me a lot of noise. This is why an external monitor is handy. The story part was filmed in 3 hours. There were 15scenes/34 perfect shots I had to make, the first 5 shots already took one hour of filming. We were getting really stressed that we can’t finish the shoot that evening. This stress caused a lot of trouble, we did not had the time to figure out the best lightning, we forgot to double check the camera’s settings so I filmed the half of the evening with wrong shutter speed which caused me a lot of flicker, bad ISO settings, and we didn’t even had the time to check the filmed clip to verify if the focus was pulled badly or not. During the post production I found out that some of the scenes are really blury, so I decided to go back, ask the actress once again, and reshoot some of the scenes. But I did not have my crew then, and I sold my soligor meanwhile, so a small Aputure LED was my main light, and i used a Tamron 17-50 f2.8 lens to reproduce the soligors 24mm anamorphic feel. I feel sorry that I did not tried to shoot it with a 2x anamorphic lens, that would give it better depth and flavour. This all caused me a lot of trouble in post production. After cutting the video I had to spend a lot of time in after effects to remove the flicker. Grading was like hell, the picture was absolutely orange, we forgot to set the white balance, so I tried to grade it with Resolve, but the XML does not went through properly because there were too many interpreted footage (from 60 to 24fps), etc. Than I tried to make it happen with speedgrade but after messing with the clips I stayed with Lumetri colors. Every clip is graded with lumetri, well it took me around 10 days to adjust each clips settings, and it’s still far from perfect. Than came another issue: the noise. I tried to reduce it with denoiser, which helped me a lot, but it made my premiere really, really slow. Anyway, here’s the result, it's not perfect but I did my best to make something watchable from it And here’s a cut to show the difference between unprocessed and post-processed footage. What do you think guys? Cheers! Alex
