  3. Correct. Those adapters are super cheap too. I already bought all of mine in anticipation of receiving my NX-L. I got a C/Y to EF, Nikon to EF, and M42 to EF, don't think I spent more than $30 for all three. Of course there's still no way to control the aperture of any lens electronically, since it's a dumb adapter, there are no electronics. Hence the need to raise money to try and develop one that does have this feature in the future.

  4. They're so clever at Panasonic and Olympus... At each iteration of the flagship model I hope I'll only need one, but every time I can see a good reason to buy both.

  5. The XC10's ISO performance - especially in HD mode - is very good for a 1" sensor. Compared to a GH4 in 4K (not too big a size difference: 2.9x vs 2.4x crop) it is noticeably better. The thing is that it's pointless making such comparisons as the XC10 has a fixed lens with an aperture that gets slow at standard and long focal lengths. So although you can do noise comparisons at equal ISO's, the interchangeable lens cameras are always going to do better with half-fast glass (let alone a speed booster). As I said before I find myself ramping the ISO right up in only moderately dim situations unless it's a wide shot. Although noise performance is good at high ISO's, the situations in which you have to ramp it up are way more frequent. It's a fantastic camera - I really love it for it's ergonomics, ease of use (with a few niggles that I've found perfectly good workarounds for), unsurpassed shot-grabbing ability, incredible stabilization and beautiful image quality. But there's no doubt it's put to best use in decent light. However it's basically an evolution of a classic camcorder and compared to most of those it does superbly in low light. Again it's a fantastic companion for the C100. The compliment each other very well. The C100's strengths are low light and shallow depth of field (where 4K is less important). The XC10 is great for deep, detailed DoF (4K), timelapse and as a small, inconspicuous all-in-one shot grabber (incredible IS and well implemented automatic modes). If you want both in one camera you pay a hefty price (money, size and weight) for a C300MkII.

  6. hey guys, please find below my first serious attempt of shooting with samsung nx1. It's just a travel film but i wanted to be more like a manifesto for the people in Nepal that stood straight before a cruel fate. Did my best to put the edit together and to grade the footage the way i saw it. Comments are much welcome :

  7. Yup, I'd go in debt for that camera. They won't do it though. I mean, I have to assume that we aren't the first people to think about this, someone at Canon must've mentioned it... Hell... Renaissance mentioned something similar right when the XC10 was released. I would think a quarter of micro budget/indie filmmakers would own this combo.

  8. Luca, this is great project! Although I will not contribute in buying NXL it for now since I do not have other systems lenses other than old Minolta one. But I will try to donate once in a while to keep it moving. By the way you should give more options other then 3 Euros contibution. Hopefully you will rise enough money to make intelligent adapter.

  13. Thought it would be cool to have a place to discuss and share thoughts about this particular gem. I just recently acquired one, and have done some primitive testing with it on an a7s/helios-44m. Will share when I have something more than my backyard. In the meantime I have some questions: Have anyone tried it with (FF) wider than 50mm? Would it work with like a 40mm/45mm pancake? How does it perform with the SLR Magic Rangefinder? I can't seem to find proper focus closer than around 1,4m - is there a workaround I am missing? Thanks in advance!

Dogma 95 consolidated the hype. Brecht's Verfremdungseffekt / V-effekt can mirror that. But, the fact is the suspension of disbelief requires to make the editing transparent. That is, if you're willing to sell "your reality" as real.

  15. Preview footage looks interesting. A little over-sharpened, maybe. The colors are interesting. They remind me of the NX1, in that they're simultaneously somewhat muted and a a tad too much. That US price is just silly, though. This thing ticks a lot of the right boxes, but only at the initial launch price; cost being equal, I'd rather have a G7 or GX85 any day of the week.

  22. The real "deal" would be an intelligent "canon lens to NX body" adapter (non speedbooster), with a good AF speed, for a price comparable to that of Metabones (which is 399$, about 350€). I'd buy one at day ZERO. Of course, the choice of having an intelligent speedbooster for canon lenses at a higher price would also be welcome, but I wouldn't probably buy it, since I'm more a still shooter after all, and the APS-c crop is nice for the kind of lenses I'd like to use on my NX1 (mainly 300mm and up).

How do you figure? The 4.6K has a native ISO of 800, and enough DR to push that 2+ stops. True, but remember that codec also ties in to low light performance. A thicker 10-bit codec will mean smoother, less compressed shadows, which means better-looking night scenes.

  24. I agree with you on this. 1DXII footage is glorious! I wouldn't mind going in on Canon if it wasn't for that price tag. $6000 USD. I could get 2 A7RIIs with that money, or one and some amazing lenses. If they had a version without the stills capabilities but all of that video goodies for half the price, I would consider it. But that would have been the 5DIV before it got announced. This is exactly the pain I'm feeling. Glad to hear I am not alone with this

  25. If video AF only works in P mode, its not amazing, its unusable - or more to the point, its horseshit. I'm skeptical on a number of features, need to wait for real testers to get past the Sony hype. There's a video of the 12fps burst that clogs after a couple seconds just shooting jpeg's, which means the buffer/write speed really sucks. I loved watching the guy squirm in the Cinema5d video, he clearly didn't want to talk about the shitty video AF. Live view AF is supposed to be an advantage of the SLT, after all these years I find it amazing that Sony and its vast engineering resources hasn't been able to figure out how to make it fully functional. Some say its the BionzX can't keep up, its been around for a few years too, if that's the bottleneck it needs to be replaced ASAP. This camera feels just as half-assed as the original a99, just a bunch of pieces from other cameras cobbled together. UHS-II isn't anything new since its been spec'd on other cameras for a couple years now. If this camera is supposed to be the A-mount flagship for the next four years, it should have it. The d500's write speeds will completely crush this with some pretty amazing write speeds. You would think Sony would introduce faster hardware with the flagship, but that's just not the case. Its not even out yet and its already slow/outdated. People love to bash Canon here, but dual pixel works really well, and it works all the time. Canon also understands the benefit of a touchscreen to pull focus, something else Sony can't seem to figure out. Outside of A-mount users that want a new sensor, this camera is shaping up to be as much of a dud as the original a99.

  31. The EM1ii probably won't be as good as dpaf but then again, can Canon offer 6.5 stops of stabilization? The af looks to be vastly improved, and given the stabilization with the new 12-100, I'd probably be willing to make do.

  32. I'll send you the shirt of moire if you like So I ended up fixing it in a hilarious way. I tried in photoshop and in premiere, I used several techniques that I've used before but it none of them really cut the mustard. So I found a frame that was slightly out of focus (no moire) and animated that over the chap. He was pretty stationary, it mostly works :D
    1 point
  33. Nah, that picture is actual moire. The thing your eyes see through folded mosquito nets etc is different. Very few cameras are moire free. Speaking of Panasonic, the lx100 is very clean. Its a shame I moved to the countryside so I dont get to test new cameras at the Building of Moire without taking my car.

Yeah, but switching between boom and lav can be a little tricky as they could sound different. But is better to have the option than not have the option. Indeed quite a few productions will have everyone lav'd up plus a couple of boom ops! But sadly sound is often treated badly, so while camera + G&E might have 3, 4, 6, 8+ people... the poor sound department has one person who is booming and recording it at once!

  35. The faster focus is a pretty important update. It was much too slow before and led to missing loads of shots. The low light improvement (HD only) is important too as ISO is the only tool you have in dim situations with the XC10. I regularly max it out when shooting at the longer end. I'd say it's an essential update. I wish they'd port the shutter angle option and waveform etc that the XC15 got over to the XC10 with a new update. No shutter angle always seems like a very weird thing for such a video oriented camera. It would also take all the pain away from calculating timelapse shutter as the XC10 only does TL as 2x, 4x, 10x, etc. Talking of which, time lapse on the XC10 doesn't get talked about much but it's a fantastic aspect of the camera. Auto-generated, high bitrate, 4K 4:2:2 TL videos with a built in ND and C-Log! Unless you're a proper timelapse nut and want to shoot RAW stills, the XC10 has to be one of the best in-camera time lapse options out there, particularly if you're wanting a painless and not-data-heavy workflow. The small sensor is much less of a disadvantage for TL too, due to generally wanting deep DOF and long shutter speeds letting plenty of light to the sensor (I haven't tried it at night mind you). I'm shooting time lapse more than ever before with this camera.

Depending on your role I would suggest finding a dedicated sound guy/gal in your area. There's such a night and day difference in quality when they can focus solely on that mic placement. If you're just setting up a mic for an interview then that's a different story.

  38. Nice post, @Cinegain. Very true. It's very tough in this consumer world where we are all gearheads-cum-filmmakers not to get pushed and pulled by marketing at every turn (especially these last 5 crazy years), researching until our eyes are bleeding, when we could be jotting down some ideas for a short film or practising our lighting/camera work/grading etc. instead. I am constantly having to slap myself out of it, remind myself to stay on target, and ask myself these questions when I've been scrolling and refreshing all day and working out how I can possibly afford something: - What's my long term goal with this work? - Will this time/money spent on researching/changing gear help my long term goal? Now, if you are just here for fun and have no money problems then hell, enjoy the ride! If you are like me, making a small living with my work and trying to carve as much time as possible for speculative, creative work then I have to keep a keen eye on my time/money. Therefore, getting around to the OP. @dvcrn, I would suggest stick to your Canon for now, especially if DPAF either gives you great enjoyment or helps you achieve the results you want the fastest. There is nothing comparable to this tech yet. However, given you mentioned the EM5II, I think medium term you should keep your eyes on the EM1 Mark II, because you know full well someone will do a comparison (probably against the 80D specifically) regarding autofocus. If you like what you see, then in your position I would be super tempted to hop fully into the Olympus world and have 2 cameras that hopefully play well together in terms of colour/usability/lenses if two camera setup is useful to you. Top priorities for me when choosing cameras 5 years ago when I started my business were small, reliable cameras with lots of features so it's been GH series all the way. They've never let me down, incredible battery life and I can adapt pretty much any lens on the planet on them meaning I can prioritise investment in lenses. Also, I know Panasonic are really in touch with users so the upgrade path has been fantastic! This has given me more confidence to invest in m43 lenses and suitable rigging for these size cameras and have really enjoyed the progress through GH2-3-4 and undoubtedly 5. I feel sorry for Canon users who really love the DSLR form factor and have invested in loads of Canon glass. DPAF aside, they have not been looked after well from my perspective.

Am I the only one who preferred the GH1 and GH2 to when the GH3 gave us that 'serious' body? Slimmer, smaller, more fun, more nimble controls, no daft rear wheel that you can't do full turns off because the rubber of the rear grip doesn't drop away next to it I also prefer the original A7S to the A7R II / A7S II. Again, slimmer, more nimble controls, less complexity, less soulless and more shiny!

I completely fail to see this. A GH4 is vastly preferable to use than a Canon DSLR. Strongly suspect that the massive majority of preferences for Canon's so called "ergonomics" is just to the *huge* number of ex (or current) Canon shooters, thus saying "ergonomics" is just a code word for "familiar". There is nothing truly great about Canon's DSLR ergonomics for filming with, it is just "what we are used to" (personally I'd rather take a Nikon for stills!).

Exactly but you forgot some A7 series has the FF and noise control GH5 the recording specs.. canon the ergonomics.. We need Olympus stab, GH5 video specs (4k60fps and 10b422), Canon colours and DPAF and ergonomics, with an A7R2 sensor and with canon lenses. Now imagine that camera ? Fully stabilized with amazing AF, amazing sensor for stills, great DoF, great everything actually. now one needs two lens system and two cameras to get 95% of this.

If it is only 2.2x vs 2x crop, I don't see much point in being able to switch between the two. But if it has a 20MP sensor, then a pixel-to-pixel 4K crop would be a significantly higher than 2.2x final crop? Which could be worthwhile, as if it then makes your lenses a wider range of focal lengths. Handy for events for instance! If I want do shoot 4K from the back of the room and need a little bit of extra reach. 100% agree! Ideally it would have full size HDMI + full size SDI But even mini HDMI + mini SDI together would be nice. Doubt any sort of SDI would happen... but even so, double outputs would be very nice! Maybe full size HDMI + mini SDI? You could have full size HDMI going out to your external recorder, plus your EVF hooked up to the mini SDI with a LUT applied (ha, if the GH5 can have LUT support! :-D ). In such cases a GH4/G7 with a fast lens will still be sufficient. We're not talking about a national level brand here! But a garage band doing a live performance, a GH4/G7 is totally fine for that. If you can't do that then: 1) you're having unrealistic expectations for a zero budget (or a few hundred bucks, same same thing) production which doesn't have to be perfectly 100% clean 2) you're not using an appropriately fast lens / focal reducer 3) you're not picking the right shots / angles for the edit Yes I would like the GH4 a stop or two faster in lowlight, but would I trade that for the higher price and limitations of a Sony? Nope, but at least that option does exist if you want to go Sony instead! Should Panasonic focus on this aspect first next above everything else? Nope, small things like crop aspect ratio markers or 4K 10bit 422 @ 60fps, or 4K DCI 24fps raw onto CFast / XQD cards, or full size HDMI, or movable EVF, keeping a low price, built in ND filters, multi aspect ratio sensor, etc etc etc.... all matter more than pushing the lowlight performance even further.

  48. @Andrew Reid NX1 (NX mount) is seeing a prototype of a speedbooster with a 1.1 crop in effect. You can find the project in your sticky NX1 topic. One of your forum members is developing this piece of tech. Btw, beautifl article. quote: "When the sensor is physically already smaller than full frame, any further crop employed in 4K is added to that base crop (for example 1.5x for the APS-C Fuji X-T2 plus a further 1.17x crop in UHD 4K)." Would you like to add a sentence to your article about the simple math of calculating the resulting crop out of sensor crop and additional 4K crop? For instance for Fuji XT2: 1.5 APC-crop * 1.17 additonal 4K crop = 1.75 total crop for 4K That way the simple math would be explicitely written done for every seeking soul. cheers

I've gotten that weird ghosting before, but I haven't noticed it since I've updated to the newest firmware, though I haven't been shooting a lot of 4k lately. I do notice weird black dots over the image that looks like dirt. I think it shows up at higher iso's but haven't spent the time to test it yet. Here are a few still frame c-log shots. These are all ungraded straight out of the camera, just exported via resolve.
